Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

I tried to pick up a MPT guide at GS and one cashier told my cashier to override the cost to make it retail price.

Found kingdom hearts 358/2 & Bowser's Inside Story at BB and picked up with no problems.

Fallout goty scanned at full price today at best buy.

Got a couple gs:
Metriod prime trilogy
Super smash bros melee
Gta iv the lost and damned

Fallout GOTY softcover is still full price. If it's the hardcover, and you really want it, pay full price for it now.
Pretty sure Shrike is referring to Star Ocean Last Hope International (only PS3 Star Ocean I am aware of).
Did this guide drop? A bestbuy I was at today had 3

I like how NorAM is giving 25 cents for it though.

Well, bad news for me :( The 1 GS that I could always count on got a new DM who now destroys all guides when they penny. Looks like BB is my only source now...

Hmmm, where exactly? I know I saw some, but I only see Buy it now prices on ebay. And Buy it now doesn't equal what people will actually pay.

Maybe not, but ebay's completed history with prices ranging from $35-$145 that successfully sold is pretty good proof to me.

At my local mall yesterday, I came across a Dead to Rights: Retribution, and an Army of Two: 40th Day(which I was denied back in the Winter), and was given both. I just asked about them, and the Manager said no one pulled them, so they must be yours.

I wonder if they transferred the DM from around here to the area you're talking about, since the DM around here is pretty strict most times.

Found a Mario & Luigi guide at a BB I haven't been to in over a year, brought it up to be bought with a lemonade (it was fucking HOT out) and the guy tried to manually raise the price on me, saying "the machine is wrong" and "youi can't have it for the lower price". I told him I didn't want it after that and just bought the damn drink.

I'm on hold with corproate now to complain about his lying and attitude he had during the purchase.
I support Visc, if only for his mashup of Katamari and MegaLegoMen servbots.
FTFY, and it looks like I'm getting a gift card out of this now.

...

Give me some credit.

MegaLegoMen is my name for Servbots. I am all about Megaman Legends, and don't think I don't roll a full Servbot team in MvC2 just to be annoying.

Oh really? Hmm, I think I'm going to have to purchase MvC2 again for either ps3 or 360 then to challenge you to a BATTLE OF THE SERVBOTS!

I tried the same Gamestop today that I found the Dead To Rights guides on the front shelf that should've been pulled. Someone had put the DTR guides back out on the spinning rack this time.

So I sheepishly went up to the manager on duty, explained that I had told them about them the other day, but someone put them back out. He then goes in the back and gives me a Bioshock 2 softcover with a penny sticker on it saying this is your lucky day then AND gives me one of the DTR guides.:D

My luck continued though....

I went to the other GS I nabbed a Bioshock 2 guide from last week and I took a look on the two spinning racks there. I figured after I found the Bioshock 2 guide there last week they probably went through and pulled any stragglers. WRONG.

I found(in order that I pulled them off the rack)the following:

Mass Effect 2 LE(sealed)
GTA: Chinatown Wars(PSP)
Uncharted 2(mangled to hell on the bottom of the front cover, big rip at the top of the spine and other damage, stashed behind other guides on the rack)

I was shocked as shit when I saw the ME 2 LE, even more shocked when I saw that old GTA guide on the rack and while I despise how beat to hell it is I'll still use the Uncharted 2 guide.

Then I tried the other GS in the area, but they're super diligent about pulling guides and the guy working there even remarked that 'his bosses got sick of people asking for the penny guides' and 'I play by the rules'. To which I added that if 'my friend' were there he would've been a smartass and said 'you play by the rules for your $7.25 an hour and no room for advancement'. So serious about his minimum wage job.

Oh and BTW, I know some folks were talking bout the Star Ocean International guide and not being able to find it. But every GS in my area has 2-3 of them on the spinning racks, but most are in shit condition.
FTFY, and it looks like I'm getting a gift card out of this now.
I don't know how you guys get GCs out of BB customer service. I had a manager take a game in the back room, tear off the price sticker, lie to me and tell me that I must have been mistaken about the price (even though I could see the white under the yellow areas of the sticker that was ripped off the top), and they still said to me "Well the manager said they did not remove the sticker, so we have to believe him." :bomb:

Edit: And the worst part, the call auto disconnected after 48 minutes and then the manager would not talk to me. It old him the phone disconnected and he walked away so left the phone off the hook and walked out of the store.
I found a FF12 CE guide for $15 at a local Gamestop. God knows how long that was sitting there....
At least 3-4 of my local Gamestop stores had 10-12 or more of these things sitting in there since the game's release. They even had about 8-10 of them lined up in such a way under a high shelf on an accessories shelving unit that they made a makeshift fourth shelf at the bottom out of those just those guides alone.

It's a very overprinted 'Collector's Edition' with ALOT of copies left out there in the wild unfortunately.

Is it worth $15 in store credit to hold onto? I'm leanings towards yes...the strange thing is that I just got the regular guide off eBay.

Honestly, I could probably fill about 4-5 orders for the Star Ocean International guide at MSRP+shipping right now. Each of my local GS stores has at LEAST two of them in stock for $19.99 each.

I picked one up at my local BB, which had guides at 20% off.

I did notice one thing that they did with their guides that's a good idea gone horribly wrong. The main issue cashiers have with scanning guides at purchase is that they scan the ISBN barcode and not the UPC barcode, so they can never get it to scan.

Said BB blacked out over the ISBN barcode with a black Sharpie marker for just about all the guides I saw on one rack. :bomb: So, yes, they make a permanent disfiguring mark on game guides, mainly because people can't figure out the difference between the ISBN barcode and the UPC barcode.

However, I did find some other of the Star Ocean: TLH I guides that had a yellow sticker over the ISBN barcode. That, thankfully, was removable, and that makes 100% more sense than blacking out the ISBN barcode with a black Sharpie marker.
Virtually every guide I've ever bought at BB had sharpie on the UPC.
wow. I'm not doubting you. I'm just shaking my head at how utterly stupid that is.
Is the manager at your BB mentally retarded?

Every BB i've gone to just puts the yellow sticker over the code that's not to be scanned.
I would have to say that you're right on that thought.

The Halo 3 ODST guide I picked up at the same time last night had a black Sharpie marker over the ISBN barcode..... though it was only on the plastic outer wrap over the guide, as it was sealed.

I can see the reason for the yellow sticker, though that's not a permanent mark on the guide. I'd rather that they just cover up the barcode with something at the time of purchase, not mark up the guide.

Unfortunately some of their cashiers are too stupid to figure it out themselves. Two barcodes and one doesn't scan? Oh noes! Gotta call a manager over.

I've seen the yellow sticker(really just one of their price stickers left blank)method and on the one inFamous guide I have on my TL it has a slash/gouge down into the ISBN barcode rather than just being blacked out with a marker.

Some of the BB price stickers either take off a layer of the guide's cover or leave a layer of the sticker when peeling them off, depending on how long they've been on there, which is just as bad.

Stopped by Gamestop to pick up a copy of Persona 3 PSP and decided to check the guide rack for giggles. Found a Super Smash Bros. Brawl on one of the lower racks to my surprise. When I went to check out, the cashier told me how guides penny out all the time, including newer stuff like the Mass Effect 2 CE, which some guy grabbed both copies of last week.

Yeeeeaaaaah, that guy definitely wasn't me. :whistle2:\"

:lol:I'm still shocked I found a CE guide still on the shelf nearly a week later.

I got a kick outta the people at HWV though saying how 'some guy came in buying up all the cases' when it was me.;)

Picked up my first penny guides today from the closest best buy (about 70 miles away)
Got Bowser's Inside Story, Saboteur, FFCC, and Army of Two. They only had one copy of each but the lady who checked me out was very nice about it, albeit a bit surprised. This is awesome!

I always use a slightly damp tooth brush and a small amount of water to remover sharpie on game cartridges and the front of discs. You can usually completely remove it that way without too much trouble. I dont buy game guides so I'm not familiar, but I imagine you may be able to do the same if it there is a glossy protection and the barcode is on that part providing you are very careful and wipe it off quickly before the little bit of water has a chance to work through the gloss and into the actual paper.

Unforgivable! The ISBN barcode is the best part!

:nottalking:

They use the stickers here, but I couldn't give a rat's rear if they mark a tiny square on the back cover that I never look at anyway. I guess I'm not that anal about guide condition (or reselling/trading).

I remember back when Target used to take a hole punch to their "collectible" action figure cardbacks, to deter hoarding and reselling. Now that was a boneheaded move (though they had good intentions). LOL

I picked up Bioshock 2 and Mario & Luigi at GS. I was pretty sure that I would be denied because the girl at the counter had denied me before. I guess she let it go since I was picking up my 360 slim pre-order. They had another Bioshock 2 guide but it was beat to hell.
