Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread XI

Status
Not open for further replies.
First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

Reduced Price Guide Discussion Thread(KEEP ALL DISCUSSION NOT RELATED TO GUIDE DROPS HERE!!!):

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169252

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinaevere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?
A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.
Guide trade thread is -----------> THAT way. Quick. I think I saw El Hoardo heading that way as well.;)

Long story short, the price drop that takes the guides to a penny is universal.....unless an employee does an override. Read on for the rest of the things that could happen.;)

It's a 50/50 chance that the employee will just scan the guides, ask for your payment and get your on your way with your guide purchase OR they may call a manager over who may either allow the sale OR deny it OR tell you you can have them for cover price.

It's a crapshoot.

At Gamestop they can press a few buttons to override the penny price and take them back to cover price, so keep an eye on the credit/gift card kiosk thing with the pad you sign. If they haven't disabled it the price will come up on there when they scan it, which will give you some room if you choose to argue over cover price versus the price it comes up in the system.
He's asking if when a guide drops at Best Buy, it also drops at GS, etc.
Uh yeah, you are not going to find any LE's anywhere in the south east area of the beltway, not because of pulls though. I got them all, sorry. Oh for future reference they are all on my way home after work and I know all the back roads to avoid the horrendous beltway traffic.

For the record:
Springfield only had 1 opened Zelda LE , 1 sealed ME 2 LE, NO ACII LE, 2 Star Ocean International
Landmark had 2 sealed ME 2 LE

IO, if you rally want the LE's and near Baileys during lunch or after work I just can give you them if you want, PM me.
Ah-ha! The Best Buy cashiers were quite impressed with your finds! It's nice to hear that Springfield didn't pre-pull for once... normally they're really good about it, in my experience.
Finally got in on this after missing the drop earlier this month!

Peninsula/Bay Area, California
Milpitas: got about half the guides on the list, including Assassins Creed 2 LE, I was told that somebody came by in the morning and bought a HUGE stack of guides, there was still plenty when I left at 11am

San Jose (Curtner Ave): found a White Knight Chronicles, Zelda CE, and Nier as well as others

San Jose (Santana Row): Nothing left, was probably pulled

Mountain View: God of War III, Prince of Persia, Zelda CE (several left), Nier

Palo Alto: Everything was pulled, other than 3 copies of Warcraft Dungeon Companion III (so I bought 1)

San Carlos: Didn't even bother checking, even though this store is less than a mile from my house!

Didn't see Borderlands, Just Cause 2, Mass Effect 2 LE, MGS: Peace, or Star Ocean at any of these stores, though the only one I wanted badly was the Star Ocean. I might try Sunnyvale, but I doubt they have anything there. Thanks so much to the OP for posting this, I should have hid the good stuff but didn't expect two Best Buy drops in the same month!
I want to thank you and any other CAG that hit that up before me. I found the last remaining ones of a decent stack of guides I was looking for. That was good form. Not sure how you missed Just Cause 2. There were 4 when I got there and there are 3 now as of closing (Curtner).

They pre-pulled a couple days earlier I think, they had around 5 of each LE's about 3 days ago, but it seems those were the only ones they pre-pulled. Either that or someone (employees/customers) knew of the drop and just hid the LE's.

Same thing with the Alan Wake/Bioshock 2/GoW 3 LE's in the previous drop, no LE's @ Springfield, plenty of the others though but no LE's.
He's asking if when a guide drops at Best Buy, it also drops at GS, etc.
:lol: Oops. But again I say :lol:. Fixed my post to reflect this. But geez, one store chain is NOT connected to another(save for Kmart/Sears), so NO...guides will not drop at ALL stores at the same time.

I guess I need to put this in the OP, not that anyone ever reads the motherfucker.

Found some guides, finally. Got 2x Nier, 2x White Knight Chronicles, 1 Assassins Creed 2 LE (there's about 6 left), a Splinter Cell Conviction (1 left), and Lego Indiana Jones (last one). Going back tomorrow to get more if they're still left.

Checked a second one, they pulled everything already. Managed to find some basmati rice in the World Market nearby though.

Thank you once again to those who broke the news of this drop. I greatly appreciate it.

I ended up getting everything from today's drop except "The Sims 3: Ambitions."

I got multiples of everything except Assassin's Creed II LE, World of Warcraft, and GOW Collection. Wow, I realize how much I made out like a bandit when it's easier to explain what I DIDN'T get, haha.

I'm seriously going to set up a trading thread soon, because none of these are going to eBay, Half, etc.. They will find their ways to CAGs. Hopefully I can find the time to set up the trading thread over Thanksgiving Break, but it will more than likely be over Christmas break. It sucks finishing up my BA degree full time and working full time.

I made out pretty well at 2 stores today, but the 3rd one turned my down. I was getting really ballsy because I brought up a huge stack of guides all at once. I wouldn't have done this, but they were closing in 10 minutes, so I was getting as much as I could carry before they closed. The manager guy freaked out and went to the back of the store and came back and explained to me how "We have to send these back to the vendors."

I was very polite and said I understand and thank you. I didn't care as much because I already had all the guides I wanted for myself. But this store had more dropped guides than I've ever seen. They had 3 ACII LE, 4 Mass Effect 2 LE, many many Zelda LE, and soooooo many copies of every single other drop and lots of copies from the last drop. I took one of each and 2 ACII and 2 Mass Effect 2s. It's no wonder I got shot down. I just kind of dislike being lied to because I know the guides are going in that giant dumpster in the back of the store instead of being "sent back to the vendors." It would be awesome if they went to gamers instead.

Sorry for ranting, but it feels good to get it off my chest. Overall I made out very well today so I shouldn't have anything to complain about at all. Thanks again to those who helped keep CAG informed once again.

I'm getting so many trade requests now that it will behoove me to hit up the really good stores again tomorrow, just to keep stuff "in stock" :p Plus there were a few that I didn't get any of in the first place.

fuck. Where did the list of guide SKU's and stock locator link that was in the thread yesterday go?!?!?!? I wanted to check some other guides to make sure it's not gonna be a total waste of a trip before I even bother.

I just went back 4-5 pages(50 posts per page) and skimmed every page and no sign of the link/SKU's.:bomb:
If Visc is a good guy shipping them at cost, then I commend him.

I just hate hearing about people grabbing 50+ guides cause "they're gonna pull them anyway so I grabbed what I could." I don't think i have 50 guides with no duplicates.

So lame. Just leave em there and maybe someone else can get lucky. 1 cent is still much cheaper than the $3-4 to ship media mail for heavy guides. guide thrones are not coo.
Who the hell still ships Media Mail? I got sick of it sometimes taking upwards of two weeks for stuff to get delivered Media so I've been sending almost any stuff I send out either first class or Priority flat rate anymore.

As for grabbing everything because it's gonna be dumpstered anyway, that's why I used to do it. Actually in the beginning it was cuz I was gonna attempt to 'grab all dem shitz to eBay or sell at the flea market for $1-3 each', but then I realized how slow these things move and all the fees I'd be paying for a piddily return and changed my mind.;)
My BBs open in about an hour and a half. Hope there's still stuff to get.
I'm sure you will! It sucks for some of the people who had pulls, but what I found interesting about this one, is all the stores who pulled earlier in the year and on 10/4, did not pull this time. It's as if the employees were like "didn't we just do this like a few weeks ago? eff it, I'm lazy." And amazingly, I checked out in front of a manager at 2 stores yesterday and they even said it was an awesome deal. One lady said I was smart for 'being onto them' and 'if you wait long enough you can just about get any guide for a penny' I was really shocked!

I got a bunch of stuff from the last drop and was able to help out some people here because of it. Really hoping for a similar outcome.

I wish my store was one of the few that clearance'd the Tatsunoko fightsticks. Been wanting one of those for a long time.

So are the guides marked in store as being 1 cent, or do you simply need to know which ones to grab? I've never tried getting guides before but think I'll swing by today and see what happens.

For those of you who live in the DFW area, North Irving had 2 ME2's left and 3 Iron Man 2's and Flowermound had 2 ME2's. Seems like all I could find yesterday were ME2's :(

Thanks. I guess with there being 50 posts per page on my settings I must've missed it since I didn't see every link to a page and what not that went whizzing by when I was scrolling down.

Now to check for the ones I really want to try nabbing. If I get too few hits I may forgo the guide run and just hope whatever leftovers are still there whenever I get back up by there again.

It's kind of sad that I've gone from being excited bout a drop and wanting to run out first thing we hear about it to going 'ahhh fuck it if I find something whenever I get there, so be it, but if not then who cares'.

Then again I did alot of GDS(grab dem shitz) for a loooong time, so I guess maybe I wore out my welcome and that's some reason as to why they pull religiously most times anymore.
They're not marked. You have to know which.
Thank you. I'll check out the SKUs that were posted. Don't some of these guides come with posters? That's the main reason I'd get them.

Most of the LEs, and some of the regular ones, have some sort of extra stuff in them. At $0.01, you're not really losing much anyway.

Best of luck to you.

GR, MI update for yesterday...

Alpine - None... It looked like they had been pulled, but I am not positive since usually they reorder the racks so it doesn't look completelly blank and there were gaps ahoy (of course I guess that happens when the only guides left are RDR, Halo Reach and ODST, Medal of Honor, some Pokemon, and Dead Rising).
EDIT: Upon second thought I did pick up an Alpha Protocol and Iron Man 2 from this location.

Grandville Rivertown - Grabbed 2 Dante's Inferno, 2 Assassin's Creed II LE, and 2 Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks... Left about 5 LoZ:ST. I am not sure if this location had pulled and missed some or if they just got hit by El Hoardo. I got lucky and found the AC II LE guides on an endcap of a checkout. This BB usually pulls, so you can imagine my surprise when I went to the checkout and played my usual line of, "I heard that these got clearanced out..." and the young very cute girl working the register responded with, "Yep, they should be a penny."

D'oh! I really wish I had known about the drop earlier in the day. My hotel is 1/4 mile from the Springfield store and I was there all morning. I could have easily gotten over there. Oh well... Instead I went to Target to see if they had any good clearance drops (there was nothing).

But they must have pulled the guides later in the day, anyway, because they didn't even have a single UFC or PoP Forgotten Sands, or any other single crappy guide left at 6pm.

And yeah, I might take you up on that offer ;). I'll be here all week.

Sorry for the dumb question, but is the the regular Mass Effect 2 guide still $20? I just went to BB to pick-up Rock Band 3, swung by the guides rack. Grabbed the regular ME2 guide (which had yellow stickers over part of the upc on the back), it rang up for $20. Is there something special you have to tell someone to gets these to ring-up for .01, or do they just ring-up on their own for .01? Thanks for any clarification on this. Or, perhaps the regular ME2 guide is still $20.

When I bring the guides up the cashier, I immediately tell them that I heard these guides were on clearance. That usually prepares them enough to accept the $0.01 price that pops up.

Yeah, the regular ME2 guide is still regular priced, it's the LE one that is $0.01. I haven't been able to track down a ME2 LE guide yet, either.

It ain't brain surgery, tell them they are on clearance and old (almost the truth). The story fits the price. I've walked out with 35+ guides on multiple occasions from multiple stores.

Went to Eugene OR store yesterday and found over a dozen guides from the last two drops. Brought them to checkout but the manager denied the sale. Sad!

Can't imagine you guys were able to check out few dozen guides without any incidence or resistance. Either you stores don't care or this particular store has a bitch.

No problem, I figure there's a lot of other CAGs in the Bay Area, and so I don't hoard the guides. I must have mixed up Just Cause 2 with some other guide, and I think I may have missed COD: MW2 as well! That's ok, I'm happy with getting most of the guides on the list.

I should go back to some stores where they prepulled the guides..maybe I'll get lucky and someone else put them back out :p

That's a shame. I got some guides today and when they rang up as a penny they brought in an older employee and he said, "Oh wow, that's awesome! Why not just go and get the rest of them? We're probably gonna throw them away anyway."

I got two extra Zelda LE guides from my BB that I want to trade for other LE guides like Mass Effect 2 and Alan Wake. I went to two different BB and one pulled their guides the other did not

Checked yesterday and yes it is still at $20.

SCORE!! My closest BB store still had a bunch of the guides, including multiple ME 2 LE's, multiple God Of War III's and a lone LOZ: ST LE with some of the plastic ripped off it.

But the best part....I found two SEALED copies of the Just Cause 2 guide, which they never had on the shelf when I was there prior.:whee:

I also picked up the :ps3:GTA Complete Collection(GTA IV and GTA Episodes in one package) while I was there which will now allow me to sell my standalone versions.:D

Found 3 copies of ME2 LE at the most hated BB. Left two on the shelf, didn't want to draw too much attention, so I also pre-ordered Kinect. The most hated BB is the Geneva/Batavia, IL store on Randall Rd.

Damn, it seems like every BB that I go to has a ton of Zelda Spirit Tracks LE guides and AC2 LE's, but not a single ME2 LE guide...

I'm headed to the other BB store in my area in a bit, since I've had an amazing run of luck today between the guides, my thrift store haul and finding a :ps3:Bioshock 2 LE for $17.48 at Target.

Hopefully I find the few guides I'm missing from this drop and the last one at the other BB store, but I'm not getting my hopes up too much on that. But I do remember they had a shitton of LOZ: ST LE's.;)

Got MW2, GoW, Bioshock, and Uncharted. The guy at the register was pretty lame but I went to customer service and they cleared it up.

Now the important part is if they no longer have dropped guides out there. They have about 70 percent of the most recent drop. Wish I coulda found an Alan Wake though

But the best part....I found two SEALED copies of the Just Cause 2 guide, which they never had on the shelf when I was there prior.:whee:

Congrats on this find, but having purchased this guide a few months ago, it's not the greatest. Yes, it's worth more than .01, but not by much. JC2 is a really great game, with a ton to do and find. The guide isn't too bad with the main story missions (20% of total completion), but it's really poorly organized for finding items and just about everything else.

The author, Christine Brown (or some simliar sounding name) is really a poor game guide author. You need to read a few editorials on her work on Amazon.

Stopped by the Brown Deer Rd store in Fox Point, WI. Not sure when they pulled, but I found a couple stragglers, but nothing special: Iron Man 2, Nintendo DS Pocket Guide, Red Steel 2. None of which I want, but picked up (there was only 1 each of those 3) so I didn't leave empty handed from 2 stores.

Wish I was back home in Portland, OR. 4 stores every Monday when there was a drop.
