Reduced Price Guides-Discussion Thread

I am truly sorry for those who didn't score today. There are still old penny guides at my BB and CC from last year when I started this in November. I am now disappointed I left half of it for others, seeing as how they will likely be pulled by BB tomorrow morning, and now I won't be able to share the loot.

Finally found a bunch, with extras of most but I got shut down on my second trip to the register per the manager's direction so now I am afraid I burned out this particular store. Oh well. At least I got almost all of what I was looking for.
The 2/2 Price Drop is Officially Dead...

I was at a Best Buy that I had visited twice earlier today and had good finds. I was returning to pick up the FF guides for CAGs, and everything had been pulled from the list. I asked one of the CSRs working if they had any of the Fable II LE Guides and she said that they had received a notice from corporate at about 3 PM EST that all guides on the list should be pulled immediately and sent to a corporate warehouse. The girl said that it was a memo that came from corporate via the DM.

It looks like the only way you are going to have a chance in hell at getting one is if they somehow forgot one and even then it more than likely won't work. I had hid one earlier and when I tried to purchase it a memo came up saying that the item couldn't be sold.
You are wrong, sir. I picked up a stack of 19 guides that I had hidden at 7:00 tonight at one store and then got 8 at another at around 7:30. There is no memo. If you have guides hidden, go pick them up.

Wow, I was feeling bad about my haul until I read the last few pages of this thread. We seem to be in another massive crackdown. Never fear, though - BB seems to do this every year-year and a half, but they've always gotten lax again after a drop or two.

Anyway, the Colonial Heights BB that has been so good to me in the past was a wasteland, with depressing gaps in their massive guide sections everywhere. They had an absolute ton of guides, a rolling rack filled top to bottom. They were all gone...

...except for Final Fantasy XII! Well, and Mass Effect, which isn't as strange. I've been watching this particular FFXII guide for a long time now. It's been the only copy they've had for more than a year, and has floated around the store during the many reconfigurations. Why it (and the lone ME guide) weren't pulled is anyone's guess. Pretty sure it wasn't a hoarder, though - I got to the store just after opening. I actually took a couple of my coworkers with me, one of whom was excited at the (admittedly slim) possibility of finding a Tales of Vesperia guide. We all came away pretty disappointed, but at least I found what I did.

After work, I went to the new BB on Laburnum, across from the White Oak shopping center. I had better luck there - all the guides I scouted yesterday were still there. I found a couple Fracture, Wario Land, Sonic Chronicles, SW Clone Wars, and Spider-Man Web of Shadows. Not great, but it was a brand new store with a very small guide section, so I was lucky to get what I did.

The Mechanicsville and Glen Allen BB's that had a lot of guides yesterday were cleaned out today, as was the West Broad BB. That leaves the Midlothian and Hull Street BB's, but I doubt things were any different there.
If you had guides hidden, then there could still be a memo.
I think you misunderstood. I bought the guides I had hidden at 7:00 with no problems. No memo came up on the computer. Granted, the memo could be regional, but it is not something that will happen everywhere. I was seeing posts from people who were saying that they had hid guides and wouldn't pick them up because of this memo rumor. I'm merely telling them to go an try because they have about a 90% chance of success (just follow all the helpful hints on this thread: go to a female cashier and pick up your guides sometime between 4 - 7 as high schoolers will be working at that time). They only times I've ever had trouble were with male cashiers in the morning (most likely college grads, drop-outs, or current college students) who take their job much more seriously than the high-schoolers who work the evening shift. I say go to a female cashier because less of them will be in tune with what is happening in the video game department. Not trying to be sexist, there, there's probably five guys for every girl that is in the know about video games.

Now that I'm done finding a place to put all the guides I got today I figured I'd post my haul. You're all probably going to accuse me of hoarding because of the amount of guides I got (mainly the 6 Fire Emblems), but in my defense when I hid the guides I had left about 3 - 4 of each guide up on the shelf at three different BBs. All the other CAGs in the area had just as much of a chance to get the guides as I did.

My guides:
Too Human x1
Sonic Chronicles x1
Star Wars Clone Wars x1
Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals x1
Spider-Man Web of Shadows x1
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles RoF x4
Final Fantasy IV x3
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 x5
Final Fantasy XII x1
Soul Calibur IV LE x1
Fable II LE x1
Mass Effect LE x1
Spore LE x1
Lost Odyssey x2
Dragon Quest IV x3
Fire Emblem x6
Tales of Vesperia x2
Battlefield: Bad Company x1

I'm not looking to trade just yet, so don't send any PMs. Need to see what my friends want and what I'll be keeping for my personal collection.
Is 70 really a lot though? There were 40 or so guides in the drop, so that would only be 2 of each.
Seventy is a lot. It usually won't be one-two of each because generally few stores actually have every guide on teh drop list. I wound up with around 20, and only a handful were for myself and my brother. The rest are for trade/selling at cag.

If they are like me and use one/ keep one pristine
You keep more than one of each guide? Wow. I'll be the first to admit that I downsized considerably when I moved down here from my old house, but even so, I can't imagine keeping multiples of each guide. As it is, I go through my old guides every so often and ask, "do i really need this?" "will I ever use this?" or "will i ever play this game again?" The pulled guides then either go to my tradelist or salvation army/good will, and I make room for new guides.

Ubii, how'd you do? Were you looking for anything in particular?

I got a ridiculous haul at the last 2 stores i went to. I walked out with over 50 guides total, inc. several Spore LE and Madden LE. I have tons of dups. Will post them to a trade thread when I have time.

I'm so sad... I arrived at 6:45 tonight and strolled around, noticing the huge gaps between guides. Behind the counter, and unavailable for sale per the cashier, were:

DQIV x5
Soul Calibur IV LE x5
Madden LE x Who Cares
FFA2 x1
FFCC x3
...and many more.

I only found one stray Lost Odyssey guide behind a GoW2 LE guide, and one Tales of Vesperia at Gamestop.

I finally managed to get Tales of Vesperia at 1 store. They have 2 and I just took both of them since I saw that there is shopping cart full of the pennied guides, which I assume the CSR is already start to pull the guides and haven't finish yet. I went to the same routine, cashier ask the manager and he's OK with it. I grabbed a few more of the LEs for my friend and extra.

This drops (2xGS+BB) are the best since I managed to picked all that I want. Thanks all.

Ubii, how'd you do? Were you looking for anything in particular?
I got what I wanted. I wanted a BiA: HH, BF: BC and Mercs 2. Those were the only ones I really cared about. I also got NG2 and a couple others. Was about to get a good score at one BB, but the stupid cashier called the manager and he shot me down. In total, I got about 10 guides total. I'm satisfied. I don't need 70 guides to feel like I really scored.

Thanks for asking!
When trying to use the store locator you will get a page titled "Session Expired" click back on your browser and try again and it will work!

Please note that if your store has 0-2 copies left of something that it may be grayed (sp?) out with the store locator as if your store doesn't have it in stock. With this being said this may not be perfect but should hopefully give you an idea of if your store is behind on pulling the guides
Please also note that other things could go wrong like guides being pulled from the shelves but not taken out of the inventory or Best Buy marking certain items marked as not being eligible for pick up so it could be grayed out (even if they have 3+ on hand or just plain out any other dirty trick they could use to thwart us friendly devil customers :D Sorry for anyone that has no luck when the site says they have guide(s) in stock I guess I should have mentioned from the get go that this isn't 100% perfect but could be of some help for CAGs looking to get in on guides late and what stores might still have penny guides out. Dam it the system works it's the employees that are broken that would be messing things up if it's inaccurate :D

A near-miss today at BB (after my bullseye this morning).
Decided to try my luck and went in around 4:30 to get some more of the less-desirable guides I had left earlier. As luck would have it, I ended up being helped by the same girl as before, who told me I couldn't buy the guides; I acted perplexed, and she ran off to find a manager.
Found some other blue shirt, who then ran off himself; he came back and said basically this: "Normally you can't buy so many of these, but since you don't know that we'll let you this time".
So I asked if he meant the duplicates (I had no problem with returning those). But he said no, that they weren't supposed to sell more than a couple of the pennied guides. I thought this odd; if you don't want to sell them, pull them, especially after I walked out this morning with 15 of em. I asked the girl about it all, and she confirmed the story of the store returning the guides for a refund.

So, I DID get all my guides (shoulda grabbed some more Spores!), but am worried that it will get harder in the future. Only things giving me solace are the facts that normally, a drop is really rather small, so it doesn't register like this one did, and I don't know that any manager actually saw me. In a few months time, when they have a new drop, I can probably walk in forgetting all about the 'rule'.

So, the guides! I'll include them all, since I am so damn proud of my double hauls!
Ninja Gaiden 2 x3
Soul Caliber IV LE x2
Pokemon Diamond Pearl Pokedex (an older guide drop? The new one was a POCKET Pokedex right?)
Lost Odyssey (with a slight rip in the lower corner)
Wario Land Shake It!
Assassin's Creed
Spiderman Web of Shadows
Mass Effect
Mass Effect LE
Fire Emblem x2
Dragon Quest IV
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles x2
Final Fantasy IV
Spore LE Bundle
Star Wars Clone Wars
Fracture
Sonic Chronicles x2
Spectrobes
Hellboy
Battlefield BC
Brothers in Arms
Too Human

and the icing on the cake...
MADDEN 09 LE!!!!1 OMGs

Wish I had gone for more of the Soul Cal LE's; I think one more was left but it looks like they'll be pulling them for good now. Really want that Fable II LE, but it was nowhere to be found - looks like I'll finally be making a tradelist tomorrow!

I'm glad i stashed 2 Fable 2 LE"s behind some boxes because the other 10+ copies were gone. They had no problems selling them even though they knew they were supposed to be destroyed.

I actually had the employee call and ask the manager if they could sell the guides that were supposed to be pulled and he said if they were on the shelf yes.

Hitting up 2 more today out of curiosity.

Man if even Best Buy is pulling guides, I don't know where to buy them anymore.
Instead of sending them to be disposed, why don't these stores do the right thing, by supporting the local library and donating all of those guides? In this economic climate, a lot more people depend on these public institutions, and we've got to support them.

As it's been mentioned before, the publisher wants them to do a 'recall' (apparently throw them away), and then they reimburse the store. Don't know if the store could claim that kind of reimbursement with a charitable donation.

And everyone that is up in arms about BB pulling the guides, thinking it's the end of an era: it's not. How soon you all forget that Vahn gave us a list TWO DAYS before the drop, meaning BB had that list first. They were just better prepared. I believe we'll see smaller drops go unnoticed again soon.

I went back to my BB to see what was left and it was picked clean. I'm guessing they pulled them. I'm glad I got there right as they opened yesterday. I think next time I'll pick up more of the good guides to trade with others. I left some for other people, but I imagine they just pulled them sometime after I left.

The thing is, if I ran my own business and I had inventory that just wasn't selling and the suppliers said they'd give me a credit that could go towards newer product that might sell but ONLY if I agreed to pull and destroy the old product, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

So, I can understand why we've run into such argumentative clerks and managers, since I'm sure that if their profit margin drops too significantly the chain may choose to close that store and put even MORE people in this shitty economy out of work.

Mind you, I have little to no compassion for the Gamestop people, since I've almost always been treated like crap by many of them.

Spent a quarter and picked up 25 or so guides yesterday. Went to 4 different Best Buys (although the last one pulled them or someone else hit it clean). No Fable LEs, but got mostly everything else.

So what's the cheapest way to ship a manual(s) to someone else? I know I'm not gonna have a use for most of the ones that I picked up.

I had my best haul so far. Out of the 4 BB that I checked, only one had pulled their guides.

Picked up:

Fable 2 LE x5
Lost Odyssey x3
Fire Emblem x2
FF: Crystal Chronicles x2
XBox 360 Achievements
Viva Pinata: TiP
Mercs 2
Sonic Chronicles
Battlefield: BC
SWCL: Lighsaber Duels
Warioland: Shake It!
Dragon Quest IV
Civ Rev
Mass Effect LE
Mass Effect
Too Human
Spiderman: WoS
Final Fantasy IV
God of War: CoO
Fracture

The first BB that I checked had a ton of guides. That's where I found the Fable 2 and Lost Odyssey guides (still left 3 F2 and 2 LO behind). I actually went back for the multiples of F2 and LO after the guy at the register told me that I should buy them all and sell them for a dollar. The 2nd BB that I had checked had a Tales of Vesperia and Ninja Gaiden 2 but when I got there they were gone. When I was paying the girl at the register jokingly said that she hated it when a customer's total came out to 8 cents. That got the attention of her co-worker. He asked to see which guides I was taking so he would know what was left. I'm pretty sure he got the ToV and NG2 guides.

The 3rd BB that I checked pulled their guides leaving only 10 DMC4 out. The last BB I went to had very little but atleast I found the FE and FF:CC guides. The girl at the register just smiled at me when she saw the total. It's pretty cool that the BBs in my area have no problem selling penny guides. I have never needed approval from a manager.

I'll be putting up my extras in the Guide Trading thread. I'll try to hook up as many CAGs as I can.

Anyone pick up any spare Lost odyssey, mass effect le, sould calibur 4 le, tales of vesperia or fable 2 le? CML or PM me if so please. Both my best buys pulled everything for the first time ever...

Is there some sort of competition going on in the Guide Trading thread? It seems like the same users are posting their trade lists one after the other in some sort of way of outdoing the previous. Some of them are posting and re-posting their trade list a number of times in a single day.

I know, it's getting really annoying. Mine got buried three pages back in two days. It seems like a lot of new people are trying to trade things from just this drop. I don't think they realize the guide list is supposed to only be bumped occassionaly. I guess they just really want to get seen.

There should be a limit. Like, 1 post a day. It's like a game of leap frog. Person A posts, then person B posts, then person C posts, then person A posts again, etc. etc. And we're talking multiple times a day. It's like they are all competing with each other, or something.
Does anyone know if Blockbuster pennies out guides?
I believe we got a report one time saying someone found the guide to Mario Kart Wii for a penny at BBV. Good luck finding one though.

I got one of those at BBV for .01. They don't seem to have any rhyme or reason for their drops. They still have 2 or 3 Beyond Good and Evil guides on the shelf (I check them every time I am in there).

Pretty sure the rules state you can "bump" your own trade thread 3x max a day? (or is it 5x?). In any case, this would be similar situation.

Hey guys, I came across a few guides at a used bookstore today and was going to check here to see if anyone knew if any of them were rare or not before I purchased them...here's the list:
Hey guys, I came across a few guides at a used bookstore today and was going to check here to see if anyone knew if any of them were rare or not before I purchased them...here's the list:

Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy 12
Dirge of Cerberus: FF XII
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
Pokemon Yellow
Mario And Luigi Partners in Time
Shining Force EXA
Dragon Ball Z Legacy of Goku II
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3
Yu Gi Oh Destiny Board Traveler
Yu Gi Oh Nightmare Troubadour
Pariah
Super Mario Advance
Star Wars Rogue Squadron II
Crysis
Mario Advance 4
Naruto Uzumaki
FF IX might be worth it. Older RPG guides usually are. FFXII just pennied at Best Buy, so I wouldn't pay much for that.

FF IX will likely net you around $20 - $30 bucks depending upon the condition it is in. None of the others are particularly rare. You can always conduct your own research over at ebay.com

Just type in the games name followed by the word guide and then select completed listings from the left side after you search. You can see what guides are worth from that.

I had a good experience at Gamestop last night. I noticed immediately that they had a bunch of the recently pennied out guides, so I bring up 5 of them. The employee commented on the amount of guides I was getting and I mentioned he would see why when he scanned them. Then he asked if I was a member of "that site that lists all the penny guides." I acknowledged I was. So if you're a fellow CAG and you're reading this, thanks a bunch!

I ended up getting (all titles purposely picked up because they were not available at Best Buy):

Far Cry 2
Rise of the Argonauts
Command and Conquer Red Alert 3
Sonic Unleashed
Naruto: The Broken Bond

I figure this is the best place to ask.. but do any of you happen to know if the Lego Batman or Lego Indy guides have been pennied at CC? I saw a few while checking out their clearance today. The guides were marked 50% off but at $20 retail, that's still way too much.

I don't believe penny guides exist at CC anymore since the liquidation team came in and marked up all the prices on everything.

I just figured they might since I saw a few other CAGs post in the CC thread that they were able to get penny guides. Or maybe I misunderstood... since I don't really know much about penny guides.

Penny guides still exist, although they are all from the older drops. There will not be any new penny drops. All guides that were not previously pennied are still full price.

EDIT 2-21-09: Don't want to have two posts in a row here.

Had an amazing experience flipping guides yesterday. I traded a stack of about 10 worthless penny guides (Crysis, Codes & Cheats, Mario Party 8, Zelda Phantom Hourglass Softcover, Hellgate London, Army of Two, Rock Band, Metroid Prime 3, God of War II, and Soul Calibur IV LE minus CD) for seven rare (or semi-rare) guides:

Nintendo Power Zelda Collector's Edition Guide
Prima Fire Emblem (GBA) Guide
Golden Sun/The Lost Age Double Guide
Final Fantasy IV Advance (Nintendo Power) Guide
Prima Zelda: A Link to the Past Guide
Nintendo Power Zelda: Minish Cap Guide
Versus Books Zelda Ocarina of Time Guide

Totally worth it. I'll be flipping some more penny guides there soon.

Don't bother calling. Look for the guide. If it isn't out, I guess you could ask, but they probably wouldn't have it anyway.

thanks SDC.

Don't expect me to sell it to you for a buck or two since the Wii version with a white cover is not pennied. No one has confirmed it as pennied and I have personally checked when I got the majority of my pennied ones. I bought it at full price at 14.99.
