Can anyone recommend a decent region-free DVD player? Preferably one with HDMI or component outputs. I have some German DVDs and I'd much rather watch them on my TV than on my computer.

You can't go wrong with a Philips 5990 or 5992 (i think the 5992 replaced the 5990 but is the same model). Not only does it play region free but you have the ability to play back media like avi, mpeg (movies that are Dl'd) on it via usb. It does have hdmi inputs.

It's kind of weird for DVD players, but usually the cheaper, third-party brands can be region unlocked with simple button presses from their remotes or even flashed via USB or CDRW.

Some of the expensive brand names can do it, but the chances of "modding" them are lower compared to the cheaper brands.

Website has an endless list of DVD player models and the steps to changing their region codes.

Also, if you have a DVD burner and DVD Shrink, why don't you convert and rip your R2 DVD's into R0 DVDs and play them then on any DVD player, albeit a slightly lower quality?
