Patch Notes / How to Update (Last update 6/10/2014) - http://retron5.in/?src=98f13708210194c475687be6106a3b84

I've included the text from the pre-order era of this OP in spoilers for reference.
UPDATE 5/27/14: It's real this time. Hyperkin's June 6 release date is happening. Many mom and pop stores that have received their units have started selling them already, and many people who have ordered from Amazon (myself included) are reporting getting emails from Amazon notifying them that their orders qualify for release day delivery and are updating estimated delivery status to June 6th, no longer showing the "we need more time" placeholder. It's worth noting that so far only people who have ordered the grey unit from Amazon are receiving order updates (which coincides with Hyperkin reporting on their facebook page that they had shipped Amazon's grey preorder units, but Amazon had yet to place an order for the black units). All consoles that have been shown off online by reviewers, people who have been able to buy them before the street date, or Hyperkin themselves have all been grey consoles to this point. No word on black consoles. Another note: Chris Gallizzi of Hyperkin responded to an inquiry about Newegg orders by saying that he is not aware of any issues with Newegg's preorders, and they should be good to go for the launch.

UPDATE 5/22/14: Just one day after IGN and Polygon reported that Hyperkin would begin shipping units to retailers on May 22 (today as of this writing), Hyperkin essentially confirmed that. They have announced that the launch date for the long overdue RetroN 5 is June 6th, 2014. In a much quieter fashion (just by responding to a random person's comment) they confirmed this would be for North America only and that the console would launch in the UK in September. There is also one more small hitch. The rumor that the first batch of units would be only for mom/pop B&M retailers and that NO units from this batch would go to Amazon or Newegg has been gaining some serious steam. While Hyperkin has been responding to a decent amount of comments on their facebook page from excited fans, they continue to ignore questions about when Amazon orders will ship. So it seems those of us who preordered on Amazon still don't have a solid release date. Fulfillment could happen any time between June 6th through September or beyond.

UPDATE 5/21/14: IGN today reported that the RetroN 5 would begin shipping out on May 22 (tomorrow, as of this writing)! This coincides with Chris Gazzilli, Hyperkin's project manager, posting a picture on his facebook page of a massive shipping container full of RetroN 5 units. Ladies and Gentlemen, it seems hell may have just frozen over.

UPDATE 5/13/14: Hyperkin has listed the RetroN 5, and it's controllers, on their company wholesale store for authorized retailers to buy. The console (both colors) and controllers (both colors) are listed as sold out. I'm not sure if they were in stock and sold out quickly, or if they haven't been made available yet. Regardless, it's good news that the system is listed for the first time ever. Additionally, reviewers such as GameSpot and several youtube reviewers have received their review units, which appear to be retail units. The RetroN 5 seems to finally be around the corner. We'll see, but things look promising right now. One thing to note: the listing for the console on Hyperkin's wholesale page indicates that each wholesale box contains six units. If this is the case, it would seem to debunk the previous report of the console being shipped in quantities of four per retailer.

UPDATE 4/25/14: While this hasn't technically been confirmed by Hyperkin, I take it as fact. It's worth remembering that NOTHING has been officially confirmed by Hyperkin. Hyperkin has remained silent until unofficially confirming almost all known info in random interviews with various youtubers and forum members. Therefor, again, I take this as fact:

I spoke to Hyperkin today.

Here are the "unofficial" details.

The "end of May" release is a "soft" release. Meaning they really are waiting for the next batch due in the summer for the official real release. Amazon is NOT getting any of the units released at the end of May. Each retailer is only getting 4 units. Retail on the unit is $139.99 and $39.99 for the additional controller. The reasons for the price increase are both cosmetic and technical but if it works as it should then it should be a great retro system.

Our 4 are already taken with pre-orders. If you know any stores locally that are getting units, and you want one for end of May, then i suggest you contact them and put money down. Keep in mind that each store is getting 4 units only for the soft launch.
UPDATE 4/17/14: Hyperkin has increased the price of the RetroN 5, saying "north of $100, between $129.99 and $149.99". Alll pre-orders from Amazon should be honored via their pre-order price guarantee. I believe Newegg has the same guarantee, I am not sure about Stone Age Gamer or 8 Bit Classics. Think Geek still hasn't opened pre-orders on the unit, instead offering a link to be signed up for email notifications as to when it will be available. Also on the Amazon front, they have sold out or pre-orders. Furthermore, it is more likely you'll learn the ETA from Amazon, Newegg, or whoever you ordered it from. Hyperkin has gone on record of saying they will never again announce a hard release date for anything.

UPDATE 4/12/14: After Hyperkin denied the console was delayed again and vigoruosuly shoved the month of April up everyone's ass for half a year, today they delayed the vaporware console yet again. At the Midwest Gaming Classic, they did their annual presentation. They ignored the planned April 2014 release, but finally somebody in the crowd asked about it. The Hyperkin rep said it was releasing in "30 days, guaranteed". This is not the first time they used the word "guaranteed", last time was about April so this doesn't mean jack shit. So maybe it'll randomly show up at people's houses at the end of may, maybe it wont, and maybe my ass will fly out of my ass.

Retron 5 Delay History:
-Summer 2013 (which they continued to say after summer was over, claiming they meant "Indian Summer" or "California Summer"....i'm not making this up)
-December 10 2013
-Quarter 1 2014
-Quarter 2 2014
-First two weeks of April
-April 2014, guaranteed
-Gauranteed within 30-40 days of April 12, 2014
-June 6 2014

DELAYED. ANY UPDATES FROM HYPERKIN WILL COME ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE: https://www.facebook.com/HyperkinGames

UPDATE: In a recent interview, Hyperkin confirmed that the initial batch of units WILL NOT BE ENOUGH to meet day ome demand. Also confirmed was the ability for the system to act as a multitap. Example: in a four player SNES game, two players could use snes controlles, one player could use the retron controller, and one player could use a genesis controller. Interview can be found here.

Pre-order at Amazon (SOLD OUT)
Pre-order at Newegg: Black (SOLD OUT) or Grey (SOLD OUT)
Pre-order at Stone Age Gamer (DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, RELEASE DAY DELIVERY NOT PROMISED)
Pre-order at 8 Bit Classics (DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, RELEASE DAY DELIVERY NOT PROMISED)

UPDATE: Hyperkin claims that they opened up some packaged retail units and discovered some units had faulty pins. because of this, the Retron 5 has been delayed. No new release date has been announced, although Hyperkin has stated the unit will release in 2014 and that they are aiming for Q1. This is the Retron 5's third delay.

EDIT: Preorders are sold out at Amazon and Newegg.

Retron5 pre-orders have finally (about damn time) opened.

For those of you who have been following this console, you know it's quite highly anticipated and looks to be far better than any clone system released before.

For those unfamiliar, here's a little info:

  • It's one system that plays games for the following systems: NES, SNES, Genesis, Mega Drive, Famicom, Super Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance.
  • Two controller ports for each console will be built in with the system. It will also come with one wireless universal controller.
  • Outputs in HDMI and upscales for HDTVs. Early impressions and videos of this have been extremley postive. From the website: "The RetroN 5 will up convert the video signal to show clearer and cleaner images, with vibrant colors on an HDTV with a resolution output of up to 720p through the use of shaders. You will also be able to select the aspect ratio in our GUI, from the standard 4:3 to the HD ratio of 16:9."
  • Features a user interface (dashboard. Somewhat similar of the PS3 interface in appearance, in my opinion).
  • Features save states. From the website: "Most games did not allow for you to freely save your games. The RetroN 5 will allow you to save their games at any point during gameplay, and will feature an autosave feature upon shutdown. You will be able to load your saves at anytime during gameplay."
  • Button reassignment supported. From the website: "Users will be able to program the controller to assign buttons to their preference. In turn, the RetroN 5 will save these custom layouts, so that users will not have to constantly reconfigure the button configuration. This feature will also be available to people wanting to remap their buttons on their original controllers."
  • 100% game cartridge compatibility, without lag.
  • Sega Power Base Converter compatible, allowing Sega Master System games to be played.
More information is here. It may be a bit dated since this was from back when they first announced the console, but I figured it was the best site to link since it also featured some screenshots as well. http://hyperkin.com/blog/2013/03/retron-5-details-revealed-from-the-midwest-gaming-classic/ There is also plenty of info on Hyperkin's facebook page.

I've been looking forward to this for a long time, and i'm extremley excited that pre-orders are finally open. For one console that not only plays all of these console's games, but upscales them and features save states (either to the cartridge (if supported) or the console itself)...this seems like a great deal. And if you've been following the hype for the console, there is a good chance it could end up selling out. Hyperkin isn't a huge company and this thing has a TON of pre-release demand (just check out the comments on the facebook page). I like the look of the black one a bit better, because it seems to be the traditional console color nowadays. But I opted for the grey model because the black console and controller seem like they'd be fingerprint magnets.

Preorder either color here at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-RetroN-Gaming-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B00DZIX3CQ/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1378958043&sr=8-13&keywords=retron+5 or here at Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=retron%205&N=-1&isNodeId=1&RandomID=65244712392254220130925161655

Here are pictures of the two consoles, since the pictures on Amazon aren't that great:

Not sure if this is an issue due to Retron 5 dumping the ROM from carts before play, but I'm wondering if certain carts w/ different program versions/PCB variants like Super Mario RPG or some of the unlicensed NES games (ie. ColorDreams, AGCI) would possibly need OS patches to boot certain revisions of the game since the checksums would be or possibly be different from the checksums of game versions they actually tested/retron 5 recognizes out-of-the-box.

I'm assuming that's one of the issues they're talking about when it comes to furthering game compatibility via ongoing Retron5 OS updates?

He mentioned specifically they got Super Mario RPG to work.
Yes, I've seen Hyperkin's footage of Super Mario RPG working, but what I'm asking is did they test all three game revisions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2? I only ask this after reading about how the v1.0 game board is the only version of the game that seems to work with other/previous clone systems such as the SupaBoy and Retron 3, while 1.1 requires doing a game swap and is iffy at best, and 1.2 just doesn't work.

Hmm well, I'll leave it at that as my post is off topic. Mea Culpa :ziplip:

They should all work, I also hope stuff like Earthbound and Castlevania 3 works.

Can you turn off the "Rom Dumping" bs?

figure this would be a good place to ask since a lot of retro game players are here.. anyone know an adapter i can use to go from VGA to DVI or HDMI or something? I have one of those VGA/Svideo bricks for my dreamcast but would like to hook the VGA out port to either a DVI or HDMI input in one of my extra tv's/monitors. THe older tv with the VGA port is going to my niece. Im not really finding anything online other than converter boxes

The increase in some SNES prices is crazy. I bought Pocky and Rocky for $16 back in 2010. $90 now. Should have bought the sequel then as well, considering that goes for 100+.

And on that note, I am very sad I also didn't pick up Earthbound when it used to be ~$60.

Fortunately Earthbound is on the Wii U Virtual Console store, so there are other ways to play that one.

Unfortunately almost all 16-bit titles have risen in price substantially over the past couple of years.  Retro gaming has steadily been gaining popularity thanks to YouTube Let's Plays, a surge in retro styled indie games, and hype around devices like this.

eBay pricing is all over the place. A local shop had Pocky & Rocky for $40 a few weeks ago and I snagged Earthbound for $110 a couple months back. Find your buy price and wait it out. It works for me and my collection has steadily grown over the past few years without getting too crazy on cost.

I know what you mean. I've been hunting for a copy of Metal Warriors, Demon's Crest and Wild Guns and they're way too expensive. I've gone to a few retro stores hoping to find one at a decent price but no luck. I wouldn't mind buying a nicely made repro of these games if they were decently priced.

You're after the same goodness as I am. I managed to pick up Metal Warriors a few months ago (it really is an EXCELLENT game btw), and Demon's Crest is #1 on my hit list still but I refuse to pay more than ~$70 (I've seen it as low as in the $50s). I haven't been actively looking for Wild Guns but it will be on my list after I snag Demon's Crest and Ogre Battle.

Fortunately, I have managed to acquire the majority of the really good carts for SNES/NES over the past couple of years so I'm more than ready to go whenever this thing actually launches.

I feel horrible that to cover food bills in college I had to sell off some of my SNES games.. Turtles 4 and Secret of Mana....

I've been looking for Metal Warriors for years, thanks to a recommendation from Cheapy D. But I've never managed to see it in the wild. And I avoid EBay these days. At this point it is apparently quite expensive. That game in particular is very rare, and the actual supply is quite scarce. So there is a valid reason for it's exceptional price. Also, it was one of the earlier LucasArts games released on consoles.

anyone who buys this is dumb. If you're not using a modded original Xbox for your retro gaming needs I don't know what you're doing.

Demon's Crest. I remember picking up that game in 1995 for like $20-$30 new at Software Etc at the mall. Didn't know shit about it except that it looked decent and was cheap. That game was very frustrating though and I regret the purchase.

Yeah, I really regret not spending more time on my collection the last 3 years. As soon as I got to college, I just couldn't bring any of the classics with me, so forgot about collecting. Focused on other things. With the Retron (hopefully) right around the corner, though, I have finally picked up my old list of titles to buy and am going to start chipping away...

Bought Kirby Super Star and Super Ninja Boy for SNES yesterday. Haven't played Super Star in maybe 14 years. Really excited for that one.

I love Metal Warriors too; it's such a fantastic game. It's always way too expensive to pick up a copy.

I couldn't call myself a CAG if I paid top dollar for it. :)

Have you ever played Gargoyle's Quest II on NES? This is a sequel to that. Gargoyle's Quest II is one of the best games on NES. I expect nothing but awesome from Demon's Crest.

I know a lot of people are saying they wish they bought this NES/SNES game in the last few years because prices have climbed. I wish I had bought more of those games when I was younger and they were new in stores. One place I lucked out was when stores like Best Buy were dumping Earthbound because it wasn't selling and it was a huge box just taking up space. I hadn't ever heard of it and it was cheap so I bought a copy. I went home and played it and liked it a lot. For whatever reason, since it was so cheap, I decided to buy another copy. How much did it cost, you ask? Best Buy was selling them for...$6.00. Yeah, you can hate me now. ;-)

If I had known how much they would be worth, I would have bought every copy they had on the shelf. They probably had at least ten copies. That would have been sweet. I would have went around to all the Best Buys by me. Who knows, I might never had to work again.

I played one of them on NES very briefly and barely remember. I just found Demon's Crest to be an above average game with nothing special, but was frustrating gameplay/difficulty. That said, it is pretty. I'm just warning some that it may not be what they're hoping for.

No point, already have a pc in the same room. I'd have to upgrade the fan and hard drive to make it usable anyway.

Even then Xbox lacks native 240p to look 100% if moved to an SDTV.

I would really hope that anyone willing to shell out the $70-100+ a cart goes for knows what they are buying (btw there is only one Gargoyle's Quest on NES the first game was on Game Boy ;) ). That being said feel free to scare off as many potential buyers as possible so the value drops and I can scoop it up for a more reasonable price.

I did something similar with Saturn games. My local TRU was having a clearance sale for Saturn games years ago. Bought 3 copies each of Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force 3, and Dragon Force. I think they were $10 a piece, but I can't remember. I was too young to even think about flipping back then, but they were so cheap, I was there with family and we bought a bunch of games.

Rumors are popping up on Hyperkin`s Facebook page that the price in the Retron 5 has increased. People are leaving comments about some video that says so.

I'm glad I have that $76 price locked in on Amazon. Probably be a good idea to screenshot your orders in case they try to cancel and 're-list.

Believe it or not, I was also warned about this very same matter a few weeks back by someone that has some kind of business deal setup with Hyperkin, but they said they were not at liberty to disclose the price. Self-fulfilling or unbridled truth? You be the judge.

Makes that $76 preorder price so much CAG'ier (price of games, not included.)! Thanks mitch079 for sharing that youtube video!

Would other retailers like Newegg/Stoneage raise price? I dont see them taking a loss (Amazon will prob take the loss thats why they closed preorders now to adjust).

Any retailer will raise the price accordingly to the new MSRP. However, Amazon and Newegg (don't know about Stoneage) have pricing guarantees so if you have a preorder in already at the $100 or less that's the price you will pay. Now they could in theory cancel the preorders which would be a dirty way to get around their guarantees, which Newegg has been known to do (if memory serves they have cancelled people's preorders that go over one year), but I don't see that necessarily happening here. We know this product exists and that it is going to be released (eventually..) so it's hard for the retailers to justify cancelling preorders on the notion the system will never release.

That sucks that they're raising the price on this. If it wasn't because I have this preordered at Amazon with the price drop I sure as hell would not be buying at $139 which the video interview is suggesting. They should've kept their mouth shut until they had everything set in stone. I'm thinking all the delays and the decision to redesign the console to have the Master System Power Base Converter fit cost them a chunk of change and they want to make up for that loss. Good luck to them but this has been a PR disaster and hope they learn from their mistakes.

If I didn't want to spend $100 on this without real world reviews and experiences, which is why I cancelled my pre-order, there's zero chance of me spending $139 in the future.

Amazon would have to honor the $100 price so that's obvious as to why they are stopping the pre-orders ATM, and will reflect a new price once orders still to get furfilled.

$139 is way too much for something with so much promise and has yet to deliver. The system isn't even out yet for pete's sake.

Could this be some kind of ploy to get those on the fence to jump on it based on a rumor?  Sounds like a good plan, until they dispel the notion of the rumor of a price increase, in which case they will get lots of cancellations.  I've been following this thread for sometime in hopes of getting reviews from those who bought it.  Looks like the release keeps getting pushed back.  Did anyone see this thing in action at PAX East this past weekend??  Wondering if they just stuck a shell over an NES console or if they actually showed it play all 9 formats to the crowd.

I can't help but wonder if the price hike is simply due to them seeing the demand. I know I'm entering the "conspiracy theory" zone here and yes, the delayed release might suggest added costs... but I don't get why they would wait so long to announce or suggest a price increase.

Hmm I've yet to see or demo this thing in person, but is it just me or in pretty much every live demo video posted on youtube, they always stick to showing off games from one system: usually either nes or snes?

While I could see a sham like this happening in the earlier Silicon Valley days, it seems far fetched to think their handful of demo units actually contain an original NES, SNES, or Genesis motherboard w/ tons of soldered wires bridging the system board contacts to a vertical facing aftermarket 72pin hahahaha.

What combination of platforms/games has anyone seen witnessed being played at public events such as PaxEast? This conspiracy could be debunked by an eyewitness or finding a live video of their demo units playing an NES, SNES, Genesis, and GBA all in the same session lol.

EDIT: Conspiracy that Retron 5 demo units actually containing NES/SNES/Genesis/etc. motherboards debunked.

Here is a video I watched this morning. It is playing a SNES cart, and then they switch to a SEGA cart on the fly.

That's kinda why I asked about it for anyone who went to PAX. Wonder if any demo consisted of multiple platforms.
