Patch Notes / How to Update (Last update 6/10/2014) - http://retron5.in/?src=98f13708210194c475687be6106a3b84

I've included the text from the pre-order era of this OP in spoilers for reference.
UPDATE 5/27/14: It's real this time. Hyperkin's June 6 release date is happening. Many mom and pop stores that have received their units have started selling them already, and many people who have ordered from Amazon (myself included) are reporting getting emails from Amazon notifying them that their orders qualify for release day delivery and are updating estimated delivery status to June 6th, no longer showing the "we need more time" placeholder. It's worth noting that so far only people who have ordered the grey unit from Amazon are receiving order updates (which coincides with Hyperkin reporting on their facebook page that they had shipped Amazon's grey preorder units, but Amazon had yet to place an order for the black units). All consoles that have been shown off online by reviewers, people who have been able to buy them before the street date, or Hyperkin themselves have all been grey consoles to this point. No word on black consoles. Another note: Chris Gallizzi of Hyperkin responded to an inquiry about Newegg orders by saying that he is not aware of any issues with Newegg's preorders, and they should be good to go for the launch.

UPDATE 5/22/14: Just one day after IGN and Polygon reported that Hyperkin would begin shipping units to retailers on May 22 (today as of this writing), Hyperkin essentially confirmed that. They have announced that the launch date for the long overdue RetroN 5 is June 6th, 2014. In a much quieter fashion (just by responding to a random person's comment) they confirmed this would be for North America only and that the console would launch in the UK in September. There is also one more small hitch. The rumor that the first batch of units would be only for mom/pop B&M retailers and that NO units from this batch would go to Amazon or Newegg has been gaining some serious steam. While Hyperkin has been responding to a decent amount of comments on their facebook page from excited fans, they continue to ignore questions about when Amazon orders will ship. So it seems those of us who preordered on Amazon still don't have a solid release date. Fulfillment could happen any time between June 6th through September or beyond.

UPDATE 5/21/14: IGN today reported that the RetroN 5 would begin shipping out on May 22 (tomorrow, as of this writing)! This coincides with Chris Gazzilli, Hyperkin's project manager, posting a picture on his facebook page of a massive shipping container full of RetroN 5 units. Ladies and Gentlemen, it seems hell may have just frozen over.

UPDATE 5/13/14: Hyperkin has listed the RetroN 5, and it's controllers, on their company wholesale store for authorized retailers to buy. The console (both colors) and controllers (both colors) are listed as sold out. I'm not sure if they were in stock and sold out quickly, or if they haven't been made available yet. Regardless, it's good news that the system is listed for the first time ever. Additionally, reviewers such as GameSpot and several youtube reviewers have received their review units, which appear to be retail units. The RetroN 5 seems to finally be around the corner. We'll see, but things look promising right now. One thing to note: the listing for the console on Hyperkin's wholesale page indicates that each wholesale box contains six units. If this is the case, it would seem to debunk the previous report of the console being shipped in quantities of four per retailer.

UPDATE 4/25/14: While this hasn't technically been confirmed by Hyperkin, I take it as fact. It's worth remembering that NOTHING has been officially confirmed by Hyperkin. Hyperkin has remained silent until unofficially confirming almost all known info in random interviews with various youtubers and forum members. Therefor, again, I take this as fact:

I spoke to Hyperkin today.

Here are the "unofficial" details.

The "end of May" release is a "soft" release. Meaning they really are waiting for the next batch due in the summer for the official real release. Amazon is NOT getting any of the units released at the end of May. Each retailer is only getting 4 units. Retail on the unit is $139.99 and $39.99 for the additional controller. The reasons for the price increase are both cosmetic and technical but if it works as it should then it should be a great retro system.

Our 4 are already taken with pre-orders. If you know any stores locally that are getting units, and you want one for end of May, then i suggest you contact them and put money down. Keep in mind that each store is getting 4 units only for the soft launch.
UPDATE 4/17/14: Hyperkin has increased the price of the RetroN 5, saying "north of $100, between $129.99 and $149.99". Alll pre-orders from Amazon should be honored via their pre-order price guarantee. I believe Newegg has the same guarantee, I am not sure about Stone Age Gamer or 8 Bit Classics. Think Geek still hasn't opened pre-orders on the unit, instead offering a link to be signed up for email notifications as to when it will be available. Also on the Amazon front, they have sold out or pre-orders. Furthermore, it is more likely you'll learn the ETA from Amazon, Newegg, or whoever you ordered it from. Hyperkin has gone on record of saying they will never again announce a hard release date for anything.

UPDATE 4/12/14: After Hyperkin denied the console was delayed again and vigoruosuly shoved the month of April up everyone's ass for half a year, today they delayed the vaporware console yet again. At the Midwest Gaming Classic, they did their annual presentation. They ignored the planned April 2014 release, but finally somebody in the crowd asked about it. The Hyperkin rep said it was releasing in "30 days, guaranteed". This is not the first time they used the word "guaranteed", last time was about April so this doesn't mean jack shit. So maybe it'll randomly show up at people's houses at the end of may, maybe it wont, and maybe my ass will fly out of my ass.

Retron 5 Delay History:
-Summer 2013 (which they continued to say after summer was over, claiming they meant "Indian Summer" or "California Summer"....i'm not making this up)
-December 10 2013
-Quarter 1 2014
-Quarter 2 2014
-First two weeks of April
-April 2014, guaranteed
-Gauranteed within 30-40 days of April 12, 2014
-June 6 2014

DELAYED. ANY UPDATES FROM HYPERKIN WILL COME ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE: https://www.facebook.com/HyperkinGames

UPDATE: In a recent interview, Hyperkin confirmed that the initial batch of units WILL NOT BE ENOUGH to meet day ome demand. Also confirmed was the ability for the system to act as a multitap. Example: in a four player SNES game, two players could use snes controlles, one player could use the retron controller, and one player could use a genesis controller. Interview can be found here.

Pre-order at Amazon (SOLD OUT)
Pre-order at Newegg: Black (SOLD OUT) or Grey (SOLD OUT)
Pre-order at Stone Age Gamer (DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, RELEASE DAY DELIVERY NOT PROMISED)
Pre-order at 8 Bit Classics (DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, RELEASE DAY DELIVERY NOT PROMISED)

UPDATE: Hyperkin claims that they opened up some packaged retail units and discovered some units had faulty pins. because of this, the Retron 5 has been delayed. No new release date has been announced, although Hyperkin has stated the unit will release in 2014 and that they are aiming for Q1. This is the Retron 5's third delay.

EDIT: Preorders are sold out at Amazon and Newegg.

Retron5 pre-orders have finally (about damn time) opened.

For those of you who have been following this console, you know it's quite highly anticipated and looks to be far better than any clone system released before.

For those unfamiliar, here's a little info:

  • It's one system that plays games for the following systems: NES, SNES, Genesis, Mega Drive, Famicom, Super Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance.
  • Two controller ports for each console will be built in with the system. It will also come with one wireless universal controller.
  • Outputs in HDMI and upscales for HDTVs. Early impressions and videos of this have been extremley postive. From the website: "The RetroN 5 will up convert the video signal to show clearer and cleaner images, with vibrant colors on an HDTV with a resolution output of up to 720p through the use of shaders. You will also be able to select the aspect ratio in our GUI, from the standard 4:3 to the HD ratio of 16:9."
  • Features a user interface (dashboard. Somewhat similar of the PS3 interface in appearance, in my opinion).
  • Features save states. From the website: "Most games did not allow for you to freely save your games. The RetroN 5 will allow you to save their games at any point during gameplay, and will feature an autosave feature upon shutdown. You will be able to load your saves at anytime during gameplay."
  • Button reassignment supported. From the website: "Users will be able to program the controller to assign buttons to their preference. In turn, the RetroN 5 will save these custom layouts, so that users will not have to constantly reconfigure the button configuration. This feature will also be available to people wanting to remap their buttons on their original controllers."
  • 100% game cartridge compatibility, without lag.
  • Sega Power Base Converter compatible, allowing Sega Master System games to be played.
More information is here. It may be a bit dated since this was from back when they first announced the console, but I figured it was the best site to link since it also featured some screenshots as well. http://hyperkin.com/blog/2013/03/retron-5-details-revealed-from-the-midwest-gaming-classic/ There is also plenty of info on Hyperkin's facebook page.

I've been looking forward to this for a long time, and i'm extremley excited that pre-orders are finally open. For one console that not only plays all of these console's games, but upscales them and features save states (either to the cartridge (if supported) or the console itself)...this seems like a great deal. And if you've been following the hype for the console, there is a good chance it could end up selling out. Hyperkin isn't a huge company and this thing has a TON of pre-release demand (just check out the comments on the facebook page). I like the look of the black one a bit better, because it seems to be the traditional console color nowadays. But I opted for the grey model because the black console and controller seem like they'd be fingerprint magnets.

Preorder either color here at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-RetroN-Gaming-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B00DZIX3CQ/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1378958043&sr=8-13&keywords=retron+5 or here at Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=retron%205&N=-1&isNodeId=1&RandomID=65244712392254220130925161655

Here are pictures of the two consoles, since the pictures on Amazon aren't that great:

Thanks to everyone for keeping this thread alive.  I've been secretly reading it to get updates of how the system is and when it came out.  I finally got my black retron 5 a couple of weeks ago and after the first day the power didn't work.  I went back to the game store where I got it and it turns out that the AC adapter didn't work anymore.  They gave me a new one and I went back to playing my retron.

I decided to give it a more thorough test run and now it seems as if the 1st NES controller port does not work.  I'm going to have to go back to the store and exchange it but I will be sure to test out all the ports in the store before I leave.

It sucks because when the Retron 5 works, it's awesome.  But all these hardware issues out of the box gets me a little worried.  I'm just glad the store I got it from has a 30 Day Warranty on the system.

So my gray unit upon reconnection and power on decided to short out and blow out all my HDMI ports... I have no idea what the hell happened but I'm super pissed. I'm going to try fixing the TV but I guess I'll have to reach out to Hyperkin about the Retron.

Damn these things sound like they may be cursed.  I know it is only the vocal minority voicing issues, (since other peoples' are working) but it does give me pause about picking one up. Especially if it could possibly destroy my TV!

It's possible my NES controller port does not work as well. I chalked it up to my controller being dead but I have no other way to test the controller.

My gray unit had been working fine for weeks and then this happened. The black one seems to be working fine but now I have no idea if it is a ticking time bomb or not. Really bummed it happened when it did. Gotta go the whole week without any of my consoles (unless I move them to another room) since there is no way I'll have the time or energy to try and fix the TV after work. I guess it's a good thing it's a shorter week. I may just buy the capacitors on my way home sometime this week and crack the TV open Thursday or Friday.

Also, taking suggestions for replacements if anyone knows of a good inexpensive 42 inch plus TV. I posted about it in the deal requests forum but I probably won't see much of a response.

I can get a 50" Changhong on Newegg for $450 ($380 after rebate). I've been told that they are a new manufacturer that produces much higher quality products than what they charge for. Think Vizio just a couple years ago or LG before that. My brother (who is the components manager at my local Fry's) told me a lot of the guys he works with swear by Changhong so I may just go that route. He told me the price seemed a little high when I showed it to him on Newegg last night though, maybe they are slowly increasing their pricing as they become more known.

I got a response from Hyperkin and they were gravely concerned and said that this particular issue had never happened before. I'm hoping that it's a fluke cause that could be a major malfunction if it blows up TVs and it happens to the wrong person. I'm not going to raise a huge stink about it as long as Hyperkin is willing to work with me and get my Retron fixed. If I can fix it myself for $10 I'm not going to give them too much flak about it. I feel dirty thinking I should consider asking them to replace the TV. I could see maybe having them pay for/chip in to fix it but I'm not looking to take advantage of them. For all I know it was something else that took them both out.

Changhong is not new, they've been around for a while in China. And Vizio never made their own panels, they used LG/Sharp/Sony panels but Changhong makes their own.

Not dissing the company, but just saying there are reasons why they're cheap.

Ok, a quick update.  I just tested out another NES controller n NES port 1 and it works fine.  It's just weird that the NES controller that didn't work, works on the NES controller port 2.

Also, for those that have the Retron 5, does your game indicator lights remain on even after you power off the system?  I don't recall what it should be like since my AC adapter died on Day 1.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably buy the 55" one. Reviews seem positive enough. 4K doesn't do much yet since nothing really supports it (XB1/PS4 don't even do 4K) but it's a good price for a TV of that size I think. Will poke around a bit more and see if I can find anything better. The Retron doesn't do 4K either so it wouldn't be beneficial to use it with a 4K TV.

I had already dismissed the 4K aspect since I have nothing to support it, but if the overall quality of the TV is bad I should probably just skip it. I'm thinking I should probably go with the TV my brother suggested. If his associates that live and breath tech approve it must be worth it.

At the moment, the only real use for 4K screens is to use them as gigantic computer monitors. A PC can provide content for that resolution. But most modern media formats don't. And the difference between 1080p and 4K is going to be even harder to detect than between 720p and 1080p. (especially on movies) The 4K resolution is only going to be useful for computers and obscenely large screens. (80+ inches)

I'm still having trouble activating the cheats.  The only game I can get the cheats to work is Alien 3 for SNES.  Can somebody help me as to what I'm doing wrong?

Should be just drag and drop the folder/file structure to your SD card. I think it would be SD Card > Retron > Cheats > codes-nes.xml (and the others)

Do you have cheats version 1.1? That's what is up on their site.

Yeah I did it when the last firmware went up last week or so. I don't understand how Alien 3 works but no other games including SNES ones don't

The only games I've used cheats on are contra hard corps and killer instinct.

But I did notice that I'd get an error saying the Cheats file wasn't present. I tried a different SD card and it worked fine even though both cards had the same files added to them.

When you added cheats to your copy of Contra Hard Corps do you get a red screen? I've updated my cheats to the newest version and when I try to add cheats to any genesis games I have I always get a red screen and have to load a save state for the cheats to take effect.

Reading this I tested my NES controller again and it still does not work on slot 1 but does on slot 2. Slot 2 also seems to be have a tighter connection while slot 1 is not as secure but it's still holding the controller just fine.

I guess I need to go out and buy another controller and see if it's just dead or mine won't work for whatever reason.

Are both controllers the same model? The one I have is NES-004

Any MN CAGs looking for this: the Games N Go in Brooklyn Park has 4-5 black Retron 5s in stock for $139.95 each.  One in the window and three-four on the shelf above the SNES games.

I bought another controller today and neither work in the first slot. I sent an email to Hyperkin today about an exchange....hopefully the new one is perfect.

Edit: I'm now getting a non-stop loading screen that just keeps doing the retron 5 animation. Anyone know exactly how the console factory reset works?

Came here to mention that ThinkGeek has a disclaimer on their Retron5 page disallowing the use of any promo codes (they're currently running the code "MERICA" for 20% off "anything") before any other CAGs waste their time like I did today.
This code from retailmenot.com worked to knock off $10 though.. But mine didn't get free shipping. I wonder why?

Follow this link to factory reset it. I used it for my defective one. Pretty straight forward. You can PM me if you have questions

EDIT: This seems to only reset the software on the system. you will need to go back through and update it afterword.

Could've swore before RetroN 5 was released, the MSRP was $100? But anytime I see this in stock anywhere it's $130-$150. I was curious is retail still $100, and retailers are just jacking up price due to stock issues?

I was hoping to purchase it from Amazon, cause hopefully they will still charge the MSRP, and with all these problems I hear of the console, Amazon is simple when it comes to exchanges/warranty.

Edit: Looks like the company Hyperkin decided to jack up the price from $99--->$140.

Price index to $139.99 after the second delay. Amazon honored the pre-order prices, but any new sales are at the new msrp.

Ahh thanks, yep I'm going to pass on it, price too steep for a retro console but plagued with manufacturing/poor build quality, and had a buddy who said warrenty for his RetroN5 was a nightmare. Cool idea though

Not that the manufacturer's word is worth anything at all, but I'm pretty sure I recall that during one of their many many apologies/rebuttals they said the price may come back down in the distant future, again FWTW.

Thanks for the link

and I got this reply from Hyperkin today about the controller. I wish I would have got this reply first instead of another person telling me my NES slot is dead or I wouldn't have tried to update my console yet.

From Hyperkin

"We have received several complaints today about the controller issue with the 1.4 system update and looking to resolve this as soon as possible. Our product development team is currently working on version 1.5 software update that will eliminate this controller bug, and we'll announce that over facebook (www.facebook.com/hyperkingames) as soon as it's out."

Edit: My Retron 5 is back in working condition. Sadly before the update and after my NES port 1 was not working but I will wait for this next patch to see if it does fix my issue.

Jesus. Seems like there are so many issues with this thing. I think I might abandon ship before my investment takes a turn for the worse.

I will say the issue I had with my console not working was because I used the pin hole in the back of the console. I explained that my port was dead to the Hyperkin Tech facebook and he said odds are my slot is dead but from what I gather they or he didn't have direct contact with the people making the updates so I figured well fuck it I have to send it back anyways so I'll try the pin hole....that just broke my console so I had to do a system format and after that my console is back to normal and everything on it works 100% except that damn NES controller port 1. If 1.5 does indeed fix it I will have no complaints and the console will be a solid investment....hell even if the slot never works it's still a solid console. My one worry is if I have to pay to ship it back to them and the console I get has the same issue or some other issue I would then I have to pay to ship it back again...and that worries me.

But I'll wait for patch 1.5 and hopefully I don't have to worry about all that.

All these issues are crazy. I haven't had one single problem with mine and I play it almost every day. In fact I have spent more time on the the retron the past 3 weeks than my PS4. Guess I have just been lucky.

I wouldn't focus too heavily on the issues that people have been having. Mine has been perfectly fine. Waiting a bit may help in terms of getting "better units" or a price drop. Buuuuuut I guess we are all CAG's at the end of the day, right? lol

So far, my Retron 5 (grey) has been rocking smoothly both software and hardware. I guess I'm lucky my system arrived from Amazon only missing one of the screws that hold down the SNES connector to the motherboard, but SNES games seem to insert crooked-ly when inserted into the slot. Anyone else experience this?

My Retron has been good (so far). All ports work. Had to run and pick up a Genesis controller and game, though haha. I have been mainly playing through Dragon Warrior Monsters on the GBC. May actually get all the monsters in this run. Fast-forward and save states sure make everything easier.

My black Retron 5 has been working flawlessly. When I got my PS4 at launch, I read all the problems people were having but mine from Amazon works perfectly to this day. I guess I am really lucky or people who have problems with units are more likely to share it than people who have working systems.

To get the GENESIS cheats working, do I need to update again.. or did people just suddenly get them working.
I am up to date to the June 10th patch, since the site isn't loading I can't tell if there are more.

It's a combination of that as well as many consumers are dumb dumbs and have a hard time trouble shooting basic things. Not pointing fingers at anyone in particular---but that's just been my experience. In the PS4 thread there was someone who swore up and down that he had a bad HDMI port---until he realized he had it plugged into HDMI 2 and had the TV on HDMI 1

I think the big difference for me as to why I haven't picked up a Retron 5 yet as opposed to buying a PS4 at launch is because I already have all of the original consoles (and I have them hooked up to my tv). I want a Retron 5 for the HDMI input, but at this point it would probably be better for me to just wait until they fix the issues with the next revision.
