Returning items to Best Buy when RZ cert was used

At Best Buy, what happens when you return an item that you used a Reward Zone certificate to help pay for? Does the credit simply "disappear" or is it actually credited back to your RZ account?

From my past exprience it would come back after a few days. I would actually use this to my advantage to extend the life of a certificate that was due to expire but there was nothing I wanted.
