Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out
Thanks for the help.

Also, just to save money..(cheapassgamer..) could I use the strap from my guitar hero guitar? It looked really similar to the one you linked
Only if you want a reason to buy a new guitar. Seriously. One guy on the RS FB page already had his strap come off and cracked the neck of his guitar. There ain't no fixin' that - at least not for a starter guitar.

Also, for the small cost, strap locks are your friend. They're cheap and will probably save your axe at some point.

Also, if you find you really like RS, Aurora strings has a set of strings now that are the same colors as the RS strings in the game. They're 18 bucks a set, but they should last a good while. Auroras are good strings.

As for picks, I use Dunlop Tortex picks in .96mm or .73mm. That's a good thickness for playing electric. Guys that shred like Dimebag use some heavy picks. They have never felt comfortable to me. A pack of a dozen run about 2 bucks.

I'd love to take advantage of this but I'm guessing that the "no substitutions" rule applies to a left-handed model, right? Same reason I've never picked up the guitar in the first place. Grr...

Don't know. Didn't think to ask about switching to a lefty model. I had asked about choosing an upgraded model. Try calling BB and ask.

But as an alternative, think about the XMT model. May require a bit more legwork but maybe you can get a left-handed model that way.

And to torpedo my own deal, I did a quick look on Guiter Center's site. Found the XMT on sale for the same 99.99 and they have a $20 off coupon(listed on front page of site) "JUMPSTART". But the coupon code expires today, so act fast for that offer. You could end up getting that guitar for $80 then go to BB for the game and use an @gamer coupon to get it for $60

ORLY? Nice. I might have to jump on it today then. I have Amazon credit but $80 cash is better than $100 credit. My only hesitation is I gotta move soon and I don't want to lug this.

edit: shipping is $10 whether you ship to store or to your address. weird.

Free shipping though for orders over 99 so add some accessories. Coupon's also good instore so you could just make a trip if you were gonna do ship to store anyway

Yeah...you don't want to do that man. The strap for GH guitars are meant for that and only that due to being small and made out of lightweight plastic. The strap ends of that strap are extremely cheap and will not hold the weight of any real guitar...not for long at least. The strap buttons and weight of a real guitar will stretch out the slots and your new guitar will be on the floor with a chipped/cracked body....or worse...a cracked neck/headstock.

Stick with the Dunlop strap. It my appear the same to you, but when you have it in your hands you will not only see, but feel the differences.

And as crazedracgerguy mentioned, strap locks are the best way to prevent accidental drops. I use the Dunlop dual design...

http://www.amazon.com/Dunlop-Design...=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0002CZW3G

I don't think you'll need them for now, but if you end up sticking with the guitar long-term and begin investing in more expensive high-end guitars in the future...they will become essential.

added a $15 strap and $6 of picks. thanks for the tip. The guitar isn't available in store so I just ordered it. Came out to about $107 after taxes.

@smiley - thanks for the tip on the Dean Vendetta. i better be playing like Jeff Beck within a year or I'm blaming you. :D

And if you aren't already, then your future also consists of mutating into a slim white dude with poor taste in curtains.

Went to 2 different Best Buys today and neither had the Guitar in stock nor a bundle with it, aside from the normal Rocksmith bundles. Both stores barely even carried guitars. I think I saw 3 at one, and couldnt see any at the other smaller store. Ended up just buying the game without guitar and used the $20 Gamer coupon. Ill look around for a cheap and decent guitar

Hey Smiley, I know you mentioned setup is pretty important with these guitars and was wondering if you knew whether Bestbuy or Guitar Center would do the setup free of charge with the new purchase.

Good to hear it worked out. The deal has me thinking of jumping in as well. Even did some test orders and could get the XMT, strap, strings & picks for a total of $110 after tax and free shipping.

Co-op mode alone is tempting me to pull the trigger, well that and a bunch of friends and family that want in as well. Motivation is always better when there's someone else there to push you.

Did you ask someone in the music dept? Because the store I hit up didn't have a display model of the guitar. They didn't even have copies of the game out on the floor. The clerk brought the guitar out from the back and opened upthe box to show it to me. He then had to go look for the game in another backroom

Another PSA: need an alternative place to get Rocksmith game cheap, then look up the Toys R Us thread about the $20 giftcard with any game purchase of $59.99+

I couldn't possibly imagine Best Buy having guitar techs on hand, so I'm going to confidently say no.

Guitar Center yes, but I'm not sure if all advertise it. Just ask the salesperson that will tend to you. Also, if you buy the stuff at the shop, you will be surprised at what you can sometimes get for free by just saying this...

"So...if I buy this guitar right now, is there something you could possibly do to sweeten the deal for a beginner?"

Those magic words can usually score you a few free things...like strings, picks, and even a strap. It's worked for me over the years and I should know...since 19, I was employed at almost every local guitar/music store in my area. I learned a lot (not just about guitar hardware/etc.)...but especially what we, as retailers, could give customers off the top (up to instant 10% off price and/or include free perks like a grab bag of free strings, picks, other accessories) if they only asked. It was a little secret amongst those in the know.

Then again, it's been a few years since then, and with the economy the way it is now, I can't guarantee any free extra perks.

But you should be good with at least a free setup at minimum to make sure the neck is straight and the guitar is intonated properly with little to no fret buzzing. Don't forget...just ask!

Thanks Smiley. Definitely good to know. Wonder how receprtive they would be to someone who orders online and ships to store?

I actually called the only local GC store after seeing Confus' post that they didn't have the guitar in stock and they told me the same thing. Would have been nice to get hands on. But they were willing to start the order process and he also told me about the promo deal. He even tried to force free shipping but the system denied it.

Smiley, any recommendations for an electric acoustic guitar? On the cheaper/beginner side of the spectrum? I really want to get this game but want to play acoustic.

One of my personal favorite acoustic/electric guitar manufacturers is Seagull, but they usually go for $400 and up, so I guess those are out of the question. ;)

My first advice though would be to stick with a cutaway body design for easy access to the upper frets. Also, you'll be hard-pressed to find good ones for less than $200, give or take. But within this price, there are a few good/great a/e guitars available with a cutaway design.

The Ibanez V Series V70CE Dreadnought Cutaway is nice with mahogany neck, back, and sides with a spruce top.

Or Guitar Center:

There's also Applause (by Ovation, a reputable company) that make good stuff for the price. Like the Applause AE128 Super Shallow A/E. It has a really comfortable roundback design made of composite with a spruce top. The neck on this thing is thin, so it will make it easier to play for a beginner....especially compared to more tradition dreadnought guitars. But the tone will be somewhat lacking I assume due to the utilization of the composite material to construct the roundback design, as well as its shallow depth. I also expect the resonance to be affected a bit too. I can't say for sure on this particular model, but I have experienced this from some other low-mid range priced composite roundbacks I've played in the past. But it might not be something you notice, at least as a beginner.

Here's a link with other a/e's $200 and under. But IMO, the Ibazez I listed seems like a solid buy. But like anything...do your research before you buy. If you decide to get one and narrow it down, I'll be glad to help if you need more advice.

Did you ask someone in the music dept? Because the store I hit up didn't have a display model of the guitar. They didn't even have copies of the game out on the floor. The clerk brought the guitar out from the back and opened upthe box to show it to me. He then had to go look for the game in another backroom
yes, i asked. the stores selection was very limited and they never even heard of the deal. When i showed them the link they told me it was Online only...which obviously they had no clu what they were talking about since it says the guitar is In Store Only.

whatever. i'm sure i can get a decent guitar for a decent price.

Wish I had known about the $20 coupon before I bought the game last week! Oh well...still having fun with the 80's Washburn G-10V that I haven't played for years! I have noticed some lag, and the compensation doesn't seem to help that much. I had read that using HDMI audio can make it worse, but I'm using toslink so idk...may try going analog to see if there's any improvement.

ALSO, if you have a cool GameStop around that you frequent, it is worth noting that they still have the pre-order codes in their computer for RS (so that they can print them in case someone lost theirs or something)... My goos GS had NO issue printing me a code for the 2 preorder songs (Free Bird - Skynyrd and BodySnatchers - Radiohead)... More importantly, for those of you that may be buying a guitar, they can also print the OTHER preorder bonus - which was a $25 coupon off a guitar at Guitar Center - combined with any sales that GC runs (they usually do big sales at ALL holidays), you could get a good guitar that you can actually try out in store for pretty cheap.

@rbarba4 - at GC, you may get a cursory setup - I think GC charges $40 for a full run over by a tech... But I would say try it out first. If you get some insane buzzing on frets or the guitar is not sounding right below the 12th fret, you can do some of that stuff from Youtube videos (raising/lowering the bridge, fixing the intonation). Until you get serious about playing, don't really worry too much about that. Most guitars are close right out of the box... At GC, they probably have done at least a little noodling. They don;t want you to pick up an axe and have it sound like shit - especially for parents that come to get something for their kid to try out, so most all of them have at least been adjusted a little.

Smiley - if you disagree, let me know. That's just what I had always found to be true and had always been told...

Analog should help out GREATLY. Anything else lags like a bitch.

Yup...this is pretty much true for any guitar shop really. But at GC, some may slip through the cracks, especially during their Holiday sales when products are moving fast and new stuff is being placed on the floor at a quicker pace than normal.

Also, for non-Holiday times, even if a guitar is setup fine out of the box from the factory or tweaked in-store...the longer it sits in a store outside a case, the more likely it will need to be re-setup again to to varying temperature changes over time. Things like heat, cold, humidity levels...all cause the wood of a guitar to expand/contract. So the longer a guitar has been exposed to this, depending on the degree of temp. changes....it can require anything from minor tweaks to a complete re-setup.

Very nice axe Pooky! I love Satch too BTW!

Here's my most recent baby...ESP LTD EC-1000 Deluxe...and I love it so much! Wasn't a surprise for those who know I'm a Hulk and Green Lantern fan. ;) The locking bridge and tuners are a couple of my favorite things about it...and the EMG pups. But mainly, it's simply orgasmic to play! I bought it when they were released (and since, this color is difficult to find new) but got a really good deal through an insider hookup for about $600.

http://www.sheltonsguitars.com/2008/2-28-08/esp-ltd-ec-1000-green-02-28--08.html

Since it's been a few years, I've been thinking about buying another guitar. I might get another ESP (yes, I've become a bit of an ESP fanboy), but I'm also thinking about a Dean. I've played a bunch of Dean's but have yet to buy one.

Once again, I appreciate all the advice. Really nice being able to get this info from other CAGs

Thanks Crazedracer. my initial thought was that if there wasn't any visible damage it should be fine. That's my noob logic and I stand by it:lol:.

But figured it wouldn't hurt to ask so I went down to the BB where I bought it and spoke with the same guy who helped me. Turns out Bestbuy does perform setup service but charge regardless of it being a new purchase. It is company policy. Guy was kinda ashamed of that policy. He did tell me though that the guitar should be fine as he didn't see anything wrong that day. But if I notice problems to bring it in. Out of curiosity, I called another BB and asked the same thing. He told me the same thing but also said to just bring it in and he'll give it a once over since he doesn't agree with BB's policy

Does this game work with electric acoustics? I have an acoustic that can plug into an amp, so can I use it with this game?
Does this game work with electric acoustics? I have an acoustic that can plug into an amp, so can I use it with this game?
Ubi Officially says that you can, but it may introduce feedback that you would not get through an electric. If you watch the videos, though, I saw a girl play one of the songs at 100% on an A/E guitar and it was fine...

I tried one Best Buy in NYC last night, and though they had the Rocksmith bundle, they couldn't fulfill the deal because they interpreted the ad to say that you had to buy the guitar and game separately. YMMV, depending on the store, but I'd double check that your Best Buy has a musical instrument section first to increase your chances that they'll fulfill the deal.

If you haven't bought a guitar yet then i would suggest waiting till black friday. I can't imagine guitar center or some other major retailer not having a great deal within our price range and play level. Probably pickup a more complete package with amp, straps, and case.

Sucks to hear that they wouldn't accomodate a deal since they didn't have the guitar in stock

Technically the deal is suppose to be buy the standalone guitar and the game. It's basically a bundle that BB put together. Though there was a CAG who had success getting an override on the official RS guitar bundle.

But there's been some good advice given about alternatives to the BB deal. Just requires a bit more leg work. Good luck
A question to anyone who bought the game. I have a teenager interested in learning to play guitar, is this game worth it?
To early for me to say as I haven't put in enough time, but I am digging my time with it. No regrets yet.

But did have issues today with fret buzz, so spent time searching for possible causes and some safe fixes. Raised the bridge a little and it eliminated most of it except for buzz on the first string. Gonna adjust it a little more tomorrow to see if I can eliminate it completely. If that doesn't do it then I'll be taking it to a tech

And can anyone recommend a good place to get guitar cables at a cheap price. Want to hook up an extension cable that has a right-angle M plug to a straight F plug . Figure its the best way to eliminate stress on the pack-in cable

Just saw guitar centers black friday. They have rocksmith for 59.99 and you get 25 in credit towards a guitar 99 or more.

Anyone know if these deals are online I dont even have a store in my state.

how long is the pack in cable? I still haven't gotten my guitar yet.
I think it's about 9 feet...
thats long enough i think. I was worried it was something ridiculous like 3 feet.
how long is the pack in cable? I still haven't gotten my guitar yet.
Confoo, did you have the guitar shipped to store? I put in an order on the last day of the GC sale and it arrived at the store on Friday. Really surprised by the speed of shipping

Ubisoft says it is about 11 ft, but I'm finding it to be a bit short for where I would rather be standing while playing. If I only use the real-tone cable, then I'm standing about 4 ft from the tv, so I don't put any tension on the cable.

I haven't found the extension cable I wanted so I'm going with the alternative of using a USB extension cable and am waiting to receive a 1/4"right angle plug adapter

And as for Guitar Center, I want to relay some info I got from my local store. I was in there yesterday and speaking with the clerk how I just started in on Rocksmith. Let him know about Best Buy's deal and he told me that while they wouldn't match the deal exactly, they would put together a similar package deal.

So you may want to try going to GC before the BB sale expires and seeing what they can put together for you. Obviously YMMV on the total package. It probably depends on how much the store manager hates losing business to BB;)

EDIT: Hey Smiley thanks for the recommendation on the Dunlop strap. Damn that thing is tough. I had a simple ErnieBall strap I picked up a couple years ago to use on a GH controller. And while it was solid, it feels like a toy in comparison to the Dunlop

This game is really good for making you practice, but I think it would be hard to pick up with zero guitar training. You probably want some lessons + rocksmith
One the recomendations in here I should get a medium pick. Would that be something like a .80mm size?
Yeah that's one medium size. IIRC medium size picks range from somewhere around .70 to .85

Man, it's gonna suck when this deal dies only because all the advice is gonna get buried

Since there have been mods around in the thread, I think we can convince them to move it to it's own thread. Or integrate it with a Rocksmith thread, if one already exists.

I've been lurking for the better part of the last few weeks here and have gotten some great ideas for which guitar I'm going to look at when I do pick one up. Thanks to all here who have helped with that effort.

Some more questions

Guessing this will be a no. Does the game at all use sheet music in any way? Would like to play more than they got on disk by (i think its what they are) tab books.

But i think that is the part Yo Mama was refering to about needing actual gutar lessons.

Think this thread did well everywhere i look the dean Vendetta got sold out and isnt on sale. Anyone know if that 20 off coupon at guitar center is common. Really wished i check the page sooner and mised out on the sale price and the coupon.

Haven't come across anything like sheet music in the game. And from reading the Rocksmith forums, I don't think it is in the game. Plus they don't refer to the name of the music note, but rather the string and the fret.

Guitar center currently has a Veterans Day sale of $30 off on a 199 purchase. Maybe try calling the online store to see if they would put together a bundle comparable to the BB deal. Never know until you try

And it does seem like the XMT price did go up to 140 or sold out. But if you're ok with metallic blue, Amazon still has that model at $99

That and it has the same exact price and description as this one minus the strap and cord in the picture.

http://www.amazon.com/Dean-Vendetta...al-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1321261190&sr=1-25

http://www.amazon.com/Dean-Vendetta...GM/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1321261190&sr=1-32

Sorry about all the posts here. But i figure all the stuff found will help people looking to get into the game. See if i can get all this stuff in a cleaner post in another section to keep it from being buried here.

Hey Smiley, don't know if you still check the thread but what do you think of the Epiphone SG junior?
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphon...c-Guitar-106503261-i1819178.gc?esid=sg+junior
I have another friend who wants in on RS but she doesn't like the LP jr or XMT. She wants to keep the cost low and found the SG jr in yellow for $129

Near as I can tell it looks similar to the LP jr equipment. But is it comparable as a beginner's guitar? Only review I have found is on the Gibson forums, epiphone subforum, and they seem to consider it pretty good for the price

Looks like I'm now the Rocksmith expert in my circle. Talk about the blind leading the blind:whee:

Another PSA: guitar center has a new sale going; save 10 on a purchase of 49 or more. Valid until 11/20 and good instore or online. good time to get all those accessories you didn't know you'd want;)
