Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out
On a playing note. Does anyone find it hard to play looking at your hands?

I look at the fretboard when I am trying to memorize a new rift or scale. Once I memorize it and just stare off into space it becomes easy. Then I miss a note and look at my hand to make sure I am pressing the right frets. Automatically my hand goes retarded. I am guessing my fingers know where to go. Then while I look I think they should be positined differently. Then my fingers try to go where they are suposed to go my eyes tell them differently and I f up with fret buzz and putting my fingers on wrong strings or tripping them on a sting.

Very frustrating and strange. Usually watching what your doing helps you do it better. Must be that muscle memory thing. Sad to think my fingers are smarter than me at playing guitar.
Just depends on what I'm playing... Almost EVERY great guitarist that I've ever watched still watches his fingers during solos. For the most part, I still do, too. Although some songs, I know so well that I don't need to look at all, other than to get my fingers down to the right fret at first. The rest is just muscle memory. "High N Dry " and "In Bloom" are like that for me.

Got to love those bestbuy people. Called in to see if they had any fenders on clearance. Apparently they thought I was trying to order a car part.

I still look at the board when I am shifting postion. Really need to play ducks more but it is far from my favorite mini game.
Once, I just called the store and shot the shit with the guy to figure out what they had (Jaguar). The next time, I called the other store and talked to the guy about what they had. The guitar that I bought, he told me about (It was not on the web) (Amer. Tele). The last one, it was on the web clearance, but I figured it was wrong. He had to search for it when I got there (60's tele).

If you know what stores have guitars, the sales people are the best resource. They should be able to tell you what the good deals are.

Of course, there is one other store that I haven't gone to and every time I call them, they're like monkeys fucking a football. They literally did not know what a Fender was when I called last time - and this was the guy working the music store. No wonder BB is going out of business.
Is there a way to find out which bestbuys around you have the music stores? I know the one that is closest to me doesn't. Most of the others are over 80 miles away from me.
Crazed you're driving me nuts with those PRO guitars. You're gonna turn me into a reseller:lol:

There was one store near me that still had one and just got back with it (thanks for the heads-up). I actually wanted it to try RB's pro mode.

But don't think I can justify opening it with those crazy resale prices. I've never sold anything this big before so have no idea how much shipping&insurance would be. Argh, this is tough and sooo tempting
RB's pro mode is awful. Keep the thing boxed and resell it. I got one for a steal locally from a guy who won one in a contest - apparently he sits around and enters contests for random stuff all day and didn't really know what he had. It's a bad guitar, and RB's pro mode is infuriating after playing Rocksmith. You know how in Rocksmith you can choose to play a chord in a few different ways, or change up fingerings to fit your style? Not so in RB Pro. And the awful part is that sometimes their tab is so awful and their fingerings are completely wrong, but guess what? That's how you have to play it, since the sensors are under the fretboard and not based on sound.

Go to bestbuy's career page andsearch for keyword 'music'. It will bring up the locations with music sections.
Go to bestbuy's career page andsearch for keyword 'music'. It will bring up the locations with music sections.
Might be easier to just use the online store locator and check Musical Instrument Clearance.

If there's more than 20 items on clearance, it most likely has the MI department. I've noticed that my local stores with the MI dept have at least 80 items on clearance. And the stores without the MI dept only have about 5 items on clearance
Don't think i've ever seen a BBY with a dedicated music section - at most half an aisle with some keyboards and stuff.
I had walked in stores that had one and never knew it. It was kind of hidden in the back of the store.

A lot of people must not know, since the '60's Classic Strat I bought had a ship date on the box of 12/2008... That's a long time to sit on a shelf.
Anyone happen to know when trading this in to Amazon whether or not they expect the cable to be included with your trade-in submission?

I already own the original version but my cable is getting kinda spotty.
I'd like buy the Guitar and Bass version from Amazon, keep the cable, and trade back just the game.

Anyone tried this ?

Any help would be appreciated.
So answering myself definitively here, this worked just fine.

I bought the PS3 Guitar and Bass retail box from Amazon for $37.99 while simultaneously submitting a 'Good Condition' Trade-In request at $30.00.

Received the shipment, pocketed the cable, threw away the box and sent them back the sealed game.
Trade-In was accepted, leaving a net price of $7.99 to get myself a new cable.

New DLC next Tuesday... Looks like the classic rock pack that was leaked a while back.

Guess Who - American Woman
Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild
Cheap Trick - Surrender

The dating on the bb guitars is not unusual, the jag, strat, and squier bass I ended up with are all from 2008 too, and the Pete wentz basses still around are 07 or 08. Pretty sure most of the Gibson and schecter stuff is the same if I bothered to check them. The vast majority of their stuff sadly never sold from the time they opened the instruments section.

Thanks for the idea I am going to go check it out. Are there any good sites to get everything you would need like sheilded wires and switches. I know stew mac sells good tools. I want to do a split coil mod to a guitar I am going to get and want to get everything ready to go.
I would say your best bet is to buy a prewired harness unless you just want to do it yourself. I recommend Martin Six String Custom. High quality stuff, and great customer service. They aslo sell just the parts and you put it together. There are a few other sites like that if you want them.

warpedsoul

Thanks for that site wire looks cheap enough. Definitely want to wire it myself. Want to try and build myself a guitar this summer or at least veneer and refinish a guitar or two. The cost of the look I want is far beyond what I want to play. Not like refinishing is hard just need the right tools and good place to do it in.

www.guitarelectronics.com/category/wiring_resources_guitar_wiring_diagrams/

Lots of great setups here just need to get the right parts together. Hoping the pickups in my new guitar have four conductors. It has split coil built in but I am not sure if that requires the pickup to have four leads.
Alright, what would you choose?
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects...itar-project-by-j-backlund-design-guita/posts

I would've gone with the metallic red, white pickguard and rosewood fretboard. But the green with tort pickguard is looking better, even if it isn't a true sea foam green. It just seems to fit the whole vibe of the guitar
While those guitars don't really do anything for me, i would have gone purple
still trying to look for a cheap cable.
my local retailer (non-US) sells the game+cable for about 57USD
Was gonna say try Toysrus.com, but their int'l shipping price kicks the price up close to 57.

Amazon has the PC retail version for $38. Don't know if you'll get'em to ship it to you
For people who like funky-designed guitars or backing Kickstarter projects, here's a cool looking guitar:

Interesting, but all it does is make me wanna build my own instead of buy:)

And speaking of Kickstarter, saw this post over on the HC forums.

"Call Keviin this tuesday and you can still get in on the deal, but don't wait! We place the final order this friday. after that you'll have to get one from your local Dealer"
So looks like they're gonna let the "slackers" piggy-back on the initial order;)

So Rocksmith froze on me tonight. When I logged back in I got an in game message that some downloadable content is no longer available and any part of the game requiring it would be inaccessible. I don't have a tone of dlc so I looked for my holiday songs & they're missing. Anybody hear that this would happen or have it happen to them?

Wow, someone's trying ta be ALL Harmonix-like;)
New DLC Day!!!

Haven't noticed but my console isn't on the webz right now. Switched ISP's and haven't updated the connection for it.

Did try the Holiday Song link in the OP and dead-ends. Wonder if they pulled it because Chapla left

I can't find anything when googling about the holiday songs being pulled except that they were available as of last month on pc.

Anyhow, newegg has the Realtone cable for $21.99. Not as cheap as some of the bundles even, but if you can't find it at Walmart or Sears this might be good for someone.

Talked about the DBZ Imperial sometime last year. But just noticed that the flame-maple top models got dropped down some more.

The FM top models in Cherryburst or Honey burst are now $339.99 each. And the page for each also advertises the DBZ hardshell case for $39.99, when bought together.
Cherryburst http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/DBZ-IMFM-CSB-Electric-Guitar.html
Honeyburst http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/DBZ-IMFM-HB-Electric-Guitar.html
So, $380 gets the package for either of those two models.

They still have the black and gold-top models at $289.99 and you can buy the case for 60; so $350 each for these two models

EDIT: ok, found the original post here with vids

Apparently the Guitar+Bass version of the game is $29.99 in next week's Best Buy ad. Damn good price, especially since the bass DLC alone is $30 retail value.

Well I've stumbled in here due to BB having this on sale for cheap next week. Had a question before buying, though:

My wife bought me a cheap guitar off of Amazon years ago (like $130 and it came with a little amp and whatnot). When I went to go play it, it just never sounded right. Multiple tuners told it was in tune, but everything I played sounded "off". My buddy who is pretty knowledgeable about such things said the action was probably off and he tried to fix it, but he couldn't get anywhere with it. He just chocked it up to being a cheapy. My question is, will the sound still sound off when I play Rocksmith? I get the impression that it just sort of detects the notes that you are playing and outputs its own sound. If that's the case I will totally pick this up. But if it sounds funky, I'd rather not waste the money.

If your guitar sounds off, it could be the intonation. You may need to adjust the bridge saddles as well. However, if you've tried everything and it still doesn't sound "right", you're not going to enjoy playing Rocksmith. Rocksmith will output whatever your guitar "sounds like". So if a particular note on your guitar is too flat, Rocksmith will output it's own "sound" but the sound will also be flat and it will record it as incorrect hit. So unless you don't care about scores, etc. It's not going to be fun. You'll have a ton of missed notes and it won't be an enjoyable experience. If your guitar sounds good in real life, your Rocksmith experience will be much better.

The game outputs the sound of your guitar with the appropriate effect pedals for whichever song you're playing. So it should sound fine, unless the guitar is just giving off a bunch of screeches.

But, curious if you happen to have switched out the strings on the guitar. Even cheapy guitars will sound ok with a fresh set of strings. That is, if there's nothing messed up with the electronics of the guitar;).

Other thing that could be wrong is the Intonation. It'll sound wrong when playing fretted notes, even if it's in tune when playing open strings. Pretty straight-forward adjustment to make and plenty of vids you could google.

mpaullin

That might be a problem. The game tries to match the sound your guitar makes to a library of sound files to get an idea of what you are playing.

Not sure what you mean by funky. Intonation is off? If you check it with a tuner at with an open string and again at the 12th fret on the same string the notes need to match. That might be your problem but a tech would have picked up on that right away.

If you don't have a tuner here is a perfect one for the price you can't beat it.

For a little more this one comes with a mic for tuning

www.amazon.com/Snark-Instrument-Cli...F8&qid=1359662269&sr=8-2&keywords=snark+tuner

Both are great and have built in metronomes. Although its a flashing heart symbol so it doesn't make a sound to go by ear.

Hey CAG's, im pretty excited about getting this, but I'm wondering If I buy a PC version of the game that was before the bass expansion do I still get the bass expansion?

PC version was released with the bass expansion. So you'll be good

The old version (guitar only) was originally a 360/ps3 joint. But you can still buy the bass expansion as DLC this version

Thanks for the input everybody. I will try those suggestions and see what I can't figure out. My buddy just plays guitar a lot, so I wouldn't call him a tech. I'm sure if I was at all knowledgeable about music I could describe what was "off" about the sound. Nothing electrical or anything like that... just like the notes aren't correct... so yeah, it might be intonation. Never tried using the tuner on anything but open notes, though (I have an electric one that I find to be pretty intuitive, so I should be good to go there).

This seems to be the best price I am likely to find this game for, so I will probably just go for it. I also have an acoustic that works wonderfully. If worse comes to worse I could get a pickup for it, but I'd prefer to save the extra $40 or whatever.

Sorry got you post mixed up with another one i was reading. Its probably your intonation then. If its off your fretted notes all the way across that string will sound out sharp or flat. So it would sound what I would call off. That shouldn't be a problem for a cheapie guitar. The main things you would have problems outside of bad solder joints would be poorly dressed frets and loose tuners. So if your not getting a bunch of fret buzz with a reasonable amount of relief in the neck and she stays in tune well you should be good to go.

To setup you intonation

1 pluck you open e and tune it to perfect pitch
2 pluck again at the 12 fret
3a if it comes out sharp move your bridge saddle away from the neck and go back to step one
3b if it comes out flat move the saddle towards the neck and go back to step one

If your intonation is off enough to pick it up by ear the game will probally not pick up you notes very well. I have this problem with songs played in drop d. The game says I am in tune. Once the song starts I have to drop the tuning down and restart the song a few times to make sure it is right. To much of a hassle for me so I mostly ignore those songs.

Thanks again for the tips. First and foremost I ordered myself a new set of strings since they haven't been changed in years. Will go from there. Gonna pick up the game either way, though. Too good a deal to pass up.

Here is my newest addition

IMG_20130130_125230_zps926a0d15.jpg

Love the 25" scale. Got smaller hands so it is not such a stretch on the lower frets. Hopefully some 10s on there will give me some string tension back. Split coil on it is nice. Not a strat but got to save something to pick up this christmass. Doubt I will get a ps4 so hopefully rocksmith 2 will get announced soon.

Okay, here's an update on my progress. I put new strings on my guitar, got it tuned, and bought the game. I played for a few hours yesterday and everything seems to be okay except for my E string. When I play, the game says the string is in tune and recognizes open notes. When I go to play a fretted note, however, it tells me that I am not playing the right one. I've been mostly testing "Go with the Flow". It tells me to play the fifth fret, I do, but it says I am playing the sixth. If I play the fourth, it is recognized as the fifth and accepts it.

Based on the feedback on here, it looks like my intonation is off on that string, right? Specifically, my notes are sharp, so I should be moving the bridge saddle away from the neck, right? Well I went through several iterations of moving it a little bit, retuning, and still getting the same problem. Finally, I tightened it to the point where it doesn't look like it will go anymore. But I'm still having the same problem (fifth fret recognized as sixth). Anyone have any tips for me fixing this? Thanks in advance!

Well... One RB Squier gone, 1 to go. Why is it SO hard for me to actually get motivated to get rid of this last one? I so want to get the MIDI adapter and try out Pro Mode... Especially since I know this is the last RB Squier in 3 states :) Maybe. I really am trying to keep it sealed until Bandfuse comes out, just to see if I like it (and the promised DLC) better than Rocksmith or what's available in Rock band. It helps that my Fender buying frenzy seems to be over due to lack of available options ;)
