Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

Well, prove it then... pick me up a '72 surf green pawn shop and ship it over at cost:whistle2:| Pretty Please:pray::lol:
If it gets down to $300, shipping to you would be pretty manageable. I'd do it for you. 2 of my 3 stores still have 1.
So I went in to a local music store to look for a Smashing Pumpkins tab book only to find the store in complete disarray. They were moving or remodeling I guess. The guy said he couldn't look any stock up but to have a look myself and directed me to the "tab section", a giant set of piles all along one wall. They were having a sale so I figured I'd have a go at it. I didn't find what I was looking for but came away with a massive haul none the less. The sale was $3/lb, which I thought sounded both weird and expensive. But when all was said and done I walked out with 19 books for $48 +tax; about $2.50 a book and at a total savings of 87% off cover price. I wish I had time to keep looking for more. I have found tab to be much more difficult than Rocksmith but now I have so much to choose from. Btw, still looking for a Smashing Pumpkins tab book if anyone has one they are looking to get rid of. eBay and amazon are too expensive.

Here's my haul. All brand new
Dangs I wish I could have found that many books over at my BB. I am  over some of those, and would love to take a peek at the one from Satriani. Saw him at G3 twice and solo twice, and it was freaking awesome.

It bears reminding that this weekend is "The List" events at Guitar Center - basically, they collect all the "1 left", discontinued colors, too much stock, etc. and blow it out on a list... You have to go to the store to get your list. In recent years, there hasn't been the same kind of deals. In past years, I got an American Highway 1 Strat for $349, an Ovation A/E that was 299 the day before for $89.xx and some other stuff at crazy discounts. If you happen to be near a GC, it might be worth checking...
I took the plunge with the Black!
Last few lists sucked for me. Don't know if I should kill a morning and go or wait to see if there's any good chatter on the inturwebz
Returned the Line 6 HD500 to my local store. Tones were great, but I figured I could justify the HD300 better price wise... Walked in on a whim yesterday and the had the HD500 I had brought back out on the shelf as an open box for about 60 bucks less. Went from a $367 purchase to a $302 purchase. I bought the damn thing back :)
Do you use this much? Would you recommend it?
Do you use this much? Would you recommend it?
Haven't played with it again... From all the videos I've seen and all that I've read, the unit is amazing, BUT you have to make your own tones. The stock tones are not exactly awe inspiring... There are literally thousand of videos, though, that show you how to program tones. Everything from AC/DC to Coldplay, people have tones for songs and artists. Nice thing is, the HD500 can plug into just about anything and it goes quite nicely straight to a PA system, if you're playing live.
Link to the Epiphone Les Paul Special for $89 mentioned above:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphon...tric-Guitar-107274870-i2101227.gc?icid=400248
Too bad the yellow isn't included in the sale, it's the coolest looking of the three.
FYI, another site mentioned that their local GC was selling the Yellow model at the same $89 price. Obviously this is super YMMV as the store would hafta have it in stock. Did a quick search in my area & the closest store with stock was over 400miles away.

And here's a vid to give you an idea of what this guitars all about.
Glad to see this thread getting some interest again.

Not saying its as good as the hd500 but here is a nice programmable pedal. As a added bonus if you got amott's bloodstorm guitar from amazon last year. You can get his signature pedal to go with it. Same thing as the $200 zoom 2.1 pedal for $74.

www.avalive.com/Zoom/G21MA/169009/productDetail.php
I have this same pedal, except it the 2.1DM. Same exact pedal but with megadeth presets. It's fantastic and you can go online and switch out the presets for another set. For example if you bought this Amott pedal, but would rather have the mustaine presets, they can just be switched when you hook it to your pc. Fantastic for the price

Thanks! Decided to get one since I don't have any effects pedals and had been looking for one at a good price. Read several reviews of this one and they were all pretty good. I was about to buy this from Amazon since it was only $7 $ more and I could use some credit I had, but then I realized I'd be paying another $8 or so in taxes, so ended up going with avalive for $74, free ship and (hopefully) no tax. I did get that deal on the $300 MA Bloodstorm guitar so I figured why not ;)

Can you provide a good site for getting the other signature presets, as well as other presets?

Walked in to a WalMart on my way to a call this morning and found the Rocksmith Bass + Guitar sitting in front of the 19.99 price tag for the old RS... I was still deciding if I would force the issue or not when the hipster kid in white skinny pants and big glasses asked me if I needed help, sounding exasperated to talk to me. I said I'd like to get a game from the case. He says "Ummmmmmm... What game? It's not like I can read your mind." Yes, I made him call a manager and adjust the price. Hipster bitch. How you like my 19.99 Rocksmith???? :)

Oh, BTW... 2 things...

1. Has everyone bought plenty of MS points from the coupon sale to buy more DLC????

2. ToymachineSH, who runs Riff Repeater, found a picture from a photographer that was thanking the Rocksmith 2014 team for the photo shoot... So it looks like Bandfuse is going to come out to some competition from the Rocksmith sequel... More to come, I'm sure.

There WAS a thread on the UBI forums, but it got taken down.
Guess it hit a little too close to the mark:lol:

Can't wait for them to make the official announcement @ E3. Really wanna know how they'll handle the transition to the new release. Also curious 'bout the "2014" moniker. Are they gonna EA-ify it?

Just bought Rocksmith and waiting on my guitars...a Squier Classic Vibe 60s in Candy Apple Red. Also purchased a Squier Classic Vibe 50s in Lake Placid Blue. Going to see which is nicer to my ear and to play and sell the other. :)

Nice choices for starter guitars. You'll get plenty of use out of whichever you choose. The Classic Vibe series is nice.

Thanks! Actually the seller for the CV60 flaked but I found someone selling a Squier VM for $100 so I snatched it. I'm about to put some new D'Addario strings on it and set it up.

Also, I bought Rocksmith on Amazon for Steam and was looking for the cable. Found out Gamestop was selling it for PS3 for @ $29.99 (and the cable alone is $27+ on Amazon so I figured why the hell not get it for PS3 too for $2 more). Anyway, they gave me the Guitar and Bass version for $29.99 when that version is still $59.99 on their site! Nice!

Also waiting on my Fender Mustang I amp to come in.

OK guys, I just recently started playing this game and have some questions.

I'm playing a song and then it throws in a new type of note (ex. chords) that I haven't previously played. Is the only way to learn these from the techniques section? Because even then they aren't in the order that they are first introduced in the songs from the main journey.

During the techniques section besides pausing the game at the end of the section and hitting restart, is there a faster way to restart it but still save your score? I hate that if I restart that section it then wants to tune and then load the video and go over everything again. I just want it to save my score but yet repeat the section right away.

What is the best way to progress with the emphasis on learning? It seems like when I hit "Continue Journey" it keeps trying to introduce me to new stuff (without telling me what it is) and it is too advanced. Yet, it will then sometimes say "want to lower the score for the event?" and I will accidentally press A thinking I am just restarting. That is a big pet peeve because it will just pop out out of nowhere and I don't know how to readjust the setting back to the normal score. I'm OK with failing the song and having to practice it over and over til I get good enough without lowering the 'score'. Anyway to default where it doesn't do this?

Any other advice is appreciated as well. I like the game but it doesn't flow as smoothly as I think it could. I would like to learn the lesson and then practice a song and keep building on that but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Thanks for the help!!

For chords the guitarcade night of the chord head is good for general practice. Then there is rift repeater. You can just pick a small section of the song with that chord in it.
Then it gives you 30 tries before it makes you restart and retune your guitar.

This is one of my major issues with this game. It doesn't let you just practice a song over and over if you want. To many load screens file saving and menus to sort through. They should know its going to take tons of practice why make it so needlessly complicated.

Don't know about how to disable that prompt. Its really annoying me. Even if I just miss by a few hundred ponts it prompts me. Then like you I don't notice it and try to play the song again and accidentally lower the score.

*Couple of ways to practice chords. From the journey screen hit Start>Techniques>Chord Book. Then choose the song you're working on and it'll show you all the chords in that specific song. Second option is to go thru Riff Repeater. That'll let you replay specific sections of the song. This'll also give you the added benefit of leveling-up the song, section by section

During the techniques section besides pausing the game at the end of the section and hitting restart, is there a faster way to restart it but still save your score?
*been a while since I've done the Technique challenges so don't remember too well. But I think pausing is the fastest way to go. It just means losing the score on that run

*Sounds to me like you'd be better off skipping the journey mode at first. I say, play the songs you want thru riff repeater. This way you focus solely on the one song as you gradually level-up the song to the full version. This should help you avoid the score reduction screen (it pops up after 3 failed attempts to hit the goal/score)

In my case, I was the opposite. I liked journey mode as it gave me a bunch of variety. Can't really stand grinding on stuff. And as the journey continued, songs would roll around again and I'd have this huge improvement from my last attempt. Just a byproduct of the time put in on other songs.

But hey everyone's different about what they like. So do what you think will keep you more motivated

Any other advice is appreciated as well. I like the game but it doesn't flow as smoothly as I think it could. I would like to learn the lesson and then practice a song and keep building on that but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Thanks for the help!!
*Best advice is to play every day. If you hit a roadblock, change things up by trying the guitarcade games. Just do something every day. BTW, try unlocking Scale Runner ASAP. It'll really help a lot with picking between the strings

Rocksmith has its flaws. At least there's more good than bad and I know I would never have gotten as far as I have without it

And Have Fun!:D
I took the plunge with the Black!
What do you think of your new guitar? I was so tempted by that deal all weekend long, but resisted making the impulse buy.

This was the Epiphone Special P90 Les Paul deal over Memorial Day weekend.

Well, I'm a total noob with real music and instruments and stuff, but the guitar seems to work correctly. It's light, but solid, and works fine with RS. Feels weird playing it compared to the plastic instruments I was used to.

I may pick up a $20 amp on Amazon when I decide to get serious about learning with RS.

Here's my go on your ?'s...

When the program throws something new at you, just muddle through it. Sometimes it feels like you're getting confused, but it's good to be confused. If you didn't get new stuff thrown at you, you'd just get stagnant. I use the HELL out of Leveler and third one in the riff repeater list. The first one, not so much. Just remember that if you muddle throgh a song and see "phrase level down", before you go to riff repeater, go to game options-> difficulty->Maximum level or whatever the option is, so that when you get in riff repeater, it's at your top level. MUCH easier to get new techniques down that way.

When you're just starting, I would stay with the journey. You get a touch of all songs and then move on to other stuff. They add songs to setlists in a not so random way - building on skills you have already learned. You will be VERY surprised when you go back to a song later that you only played once or twice. You will increase your score exponentially and be really proud at what you've learned. The problem with picking and choosing songs at first is that you may be tempted to churn on something that's far too hard for you at this point and it'll tempt you to give up. I love Nirvana, but the solo in "In Bloom" stumped me for a while. Now I run through it without thinking at 100% (that's what you're aiming for, is muscle memory).

I've probably got 400 hours in on RS, and I am still nowhere near a "good" guitarist. That said, I would fell perfectly comfortable joining a band and getting better through playing live.

Anyway, my main advice is this:

Stick with it.

Play a little EVERY DAY.

Don't get discouraged - you may think you've hit a wall, but go back and play something from before and you'll see how much you've progressed (and in a very short time).

Have fun.

Here's some interesting info that got posted over on the UBI forums:

Woulda posted sooner, but took a bit for my vision to come back.   New revised site is reaaally bright.

OK, this is probably a "HUGE" YMMV, but today I found at a local Sam's Club, the new version bundle (with bass) for both 360 and PS3, marked down to $79.81.  Multiple copies were still available.  The price sign was dated 5/31, so looks like it dropped last week.  The in-store SKU numbers are 243397 for the 360 version and 243236 for the PS3 version.  Happy hunting for anyone interested.

Picture link for evidence:  http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/1038/samsrocksmith.jpg

This was a store in the Metro Detroit area, if anyone local wants to know where specifically, shoot me a PM.  (Hopefully I can figure out how to use PMs with this new site layout!)

So 80 bucks for the Epiphone Les Paul Junior, with an extra copy of the game and cable thrown in as a bonus.  Not the greatest guitar in the world, but I'd been thinking about buying some kind of Les Paul for the past month or so.  I probably would have eventually bought a Special, and gotten dual pickups for more tone options, but this price was too good to pass up.

Nice find. The guitar tends to go for 100new and that's if it's on sale. So getting the game and guitar for 80 is sweeet!.

But, probably very YMMV, like you said. Think someone else found a similar deal a few months back (or maybe it was last year, brain's fuzzy).

Sidenote: Hooray, we got darkness back on the site. Gamer's don't like the light ;)

Just wanted to say a big 'thank you' to drastion, crazedracerguy and rbarba64 for the help.  Sorry I didn't reply sooner but the board was down and then I was out of town for a couple of days on business.  So I will try to play everyday as much as I can and I'm already starting to get used to the interface a bit more but now a couple of other questions popped up.

Is there any way to access the Riff Repeater at any time?  I will see it pop up every now and then but it would be great if I could just access it whenever to work on a particular song.

After you have done a set for an event, is there any way to go back and practice the songs in just that set?  Basically just repeat that event, or even a particular song at that skill level?  Only way I can see is to just practice the individual songs from the songs menu but I haven't really done that yet and I'm still not familiar with all of the options for just the one song.  Doesn't seem like the game really lets you go back and access things you have done.

I will hit the chordbook to practice on the chords, it just seems like the events are so short where you may struggle and get by on one and you're already on a new one with different chords you've never seen before yet I am still struggling with the chords from the prior event that I'd like to go back and do again.

I think that's actually regular price from Monoprice for the Strat clone...or damn near it. And TBH it's closer to a RondoMusic/SX in terms of specs than it is a Squier/Fender Strat.

From best buy, 20% off all clearance guitars lol, should've waited on the CV P Bass to save another $36 but I was afraid it was going to sell out (and it did at the store I got it from), oh well.

Looks like the white strat clone (the one color not on sale) is about 10 bucks higher. But the les paul clone is marked down by 30 bucks. Granted, I think they're trying to clearance out that model, because they're replacing it with a slightly modified version (no pickguard, volume controls rotated). Still a pretty good deal, slightly better than regular price.

I was excited until I saw the word "Kinect."  That better be optional, or else I'll have to pass.

But I'm pleasantly surprised that this is coming to the 360, and not strictly a next-gen XB1 game.

Well, we're officially getting a sequel next year that'll support drums and keyboard too. Time to get a band together. :D

http://www.polygon.com/2013/6/10/4416434/ubisoft-launching-all-new-rocksmith-2014
No keyboards or drums... Guitar and bass only. The keyboards and drums are part of the "Session Play" where you jam to a virtual backing band. You can pick and choose what instruments you have backing you (that may have been a bit confusing last night in the demo).

Already annoumced songs:

 • Aerosmith - Walk This Way
 • Alice In Chains - Stone
 • Bob Dylan - Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door
 • B'z - Ultra Soul
 • Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger
 • The Smashing Pumpkins - The Chimera
 • The Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock (Pre-order bonus)

DJP - One of the developers was in Eliott's chat last night and confirmed the Kinect navigation was entirely optional. With how nicely it worked on stage, though, I will be buying a cheap Kinect when RS2014 comes out.

Glad to hear it's optional. I do not have and do not want a Kinect, but I'll admit, voice commands for Rocksmith menu navigation would probably work pretty well. It is a bit clumsy to have to pick up a controller between songs.

Edit - to avoid double posting - Looks like that Les Paul copy on Monoprice is now sold out. The Strat copy is still on sale for $79, minus 10% using the code above, plus tax and shipping, comes out to roughly $85, if anyone is interested.

Agreed. This is one of the few times that Kinect integration is a great addition. It's kind of a pain having to go back and forth from holding your controller/guitar or pausing real quick when the notes start coming too fast.

For rift repeater. Go to songs and then the one you want. It will beel an option if you just keep scrolling to the right when it asks you if you want to rehears or perform the song.

To pick a set you can go to manage event. Then you can customize the set list of a current event. You can't repeat just an old one just change a current one.

A few more tips for you. The closest thing to traditional method in rocksmith it riff repeator-accelerator and ducks. You want to go at a slow pace when you first start out. If you rush you will be reinforcing mistakes. That where rocksmith fails. It pushes you to play faster but cares nothing about clean play. Its all good though as the game keeps the guitar in your hands and keeps it fun.

For chords just practice out side the game. Pick an easy one like a D chord and the one you want to learn. Just switch back and fourth between the two. Take time to get your finger positioning right so you don't mute strings.

Don't worry about going fast. If you learn it right and practice it you will get better a lot faster than if you try to do everything as fast as you can.
