Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

The one thing that I really get from starting to play again is how small my hands are.  Watching the video tutorials in the game, they show the woman easily holding the pointer finger on the 2nd fret and putting the ring finger on the 4th fret and my hands just do not stretch that far.  I know that it's something that I just need to be patient with and keep working on though.

Playing Next Girl by the Black Keys yesterday, I had a mental "click" where I realized that I was moving my hand too much and could "prepare" to play another string by putting another finger on a different string and fret while I was playing the first note so that I would be ready for the next one... crazy, huh?

Yeah, the lessons are REALLY good. I need to slow down and watch more of them.

I'm always learning something with this "game".

I had to explain that to my daughter last night. She picked up the Rocksmith 2014 case and said, "What's this?" I wanted to say a game, just to be simplistic, but ended up telling her that it was software teaching me more about how to play guitar.

Of course, then she said she wanted to start playing on my new Blood Moon, and I said, "HELL, NO!" to that...

Yeah, I'm VERY protective about my shiny new guitar. When I first got the guitar, I was like a mother bear :)

I let the kids try it with VERY close supervision.

I have a question about the new version. Is there a code inside at all (besides preorder bonuses)? I know I was shocked to find a Uplay passport in my copy of Assassins Creed 3. I understand the whole "online pass" thing, but it even restricted access to the Uplay content. I don't want to get a used copy and find that I have to pay $10 to get access to the bonus arrangements

No code. I already had a uplay account and some points from AC2 that I used to get the extras for RS 2014.
Same here.

Was able to link up right away; no extra code needed.

And I had a gutted copy from GS, so I wasn't sure if they gave me all pack-in stuff.

Used my points from SC Conviction. So I either setup my account from that or from when I registered on the UBI forums. Don't remember really.

Ubisoft actually just took down their entire passport system so you won't need a code for any of their games from now on.

But to answer your question, no, there's no code inside the box. The Smashing Pumpkins pre-order bonus comes printed on the receipt. Some GS stores might still have codes but you have to ask them for it and that's usually a crapshoot. Good luck.

That's where Scale Runner helped me out so much.

It locked you in to the same 4 frets and had you move up and down the scale.

Helped me keep my fingers spaced out properly as well as improve finger dexterity on my fretting hand. And it also helped me move up and down the strings with my picking hand.

Haven't tried out the new games other than String skipper, so can't say how good they are. But String skipper woulda a been nice to have in the OG game. My practice came mostly from SuperDucks, Baseball and song play-thrus

Anyone have advice on a good Bass on sale right now? The wife wants one so she can start playing this with me.. :)
Bass deals don't pop up as often but here are a couple for you to start your comparison shopping.

Washburn T14 for $140

http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/Washburn-T14-Electric-Bass-Guitar-in-Silver-Sparkle.html

Another CAG got a similar (or mighta been the same) one. So maybe they'll speak up about it.

SX Ursa 1 p-bass for $80

http://www.rondomusic.com/ursa1mncar.html

Usually hear good things about rondo's bass guitars; as in they're good, solid starters

Otherwise, you could wait it out a bit more and see if anything pops up for Black Friday.

The game let's you emulate a Bass using your regular electric guitar, but it's just not the same.

Oh and... WIFE + BASS =

Wife decided to splurge just a little and bought a peavey millennium 5 string in transparent blue with a decent looking hard case for $309 shipped. I bought the Smashing Pumpkins DLC pack too.. Pretty excited to see that up!

We can play guitar and bass same time same song together right..? Haha

Nice.

Just make sure you have 2nd RS cable or else one of ya is gonna have a bad day.

I was at a Sam's Club yesterday that still had some original Rocksmith guitar bundles in stock - the first version (without bass) - and still priced at $188.  I even had it scanned to confirm.  They apparently clearanced out the updated bundle (with bass) as low as $49, but still have the original bundle basically at the original MSRP.  Silly, but whatever.

They did also had the standalone original game for $4.88 for both systems, and the updated game (with bass) for $9.88 for 360 only.  Very good deals there if you're looking for an extra cable.  Of course, at this point, there will only be a handful of stores that still have these in stock.  The two Sams that I stop at more often, they are long gone already.  This one was on the other side of town.

And it appears they aren't carrying Rocksmith 2014 at all at Sams, unfortunately.

Looks like an Iron Maiden pack for this week teased on fb...no word on actual release date for on demand version :(
Cool. I love Maiden, but I have a feeling their songs might be too hard for me at this stage. Who am I kidding, if the track selection is good, I'm in.

Wasted Years would be epic.. but I'm actually kinda bummed it's Maiden to be honest. I'm nowhere near the skill level required to play fast metal songs. I would've preferred some classic rock or blues to get me learning. Oh well, here's hoping for something like that next week.

The New DLC tracks are:

"Battle Without Honor or Humanity", "Bambina" and "Thrill" by Hotei
"Fear of the Dark", "Run to the Hills", "Aces High", "The Number of the Beast" and "2 Minutes to Midnight" by Iron Maiden

Nothing is on sale again this week.

If I were to hook a guitar up to a PS3/computer, could I route all the sound to headphones and not have any sound come from the guitar itself? I live in an apartment so I don't want to make any/much noise to bother my neighbors.

If you didn't notice, I know nothing about guitar.

You can set it up just like any other video game. The receiver/TV is your amp. The noise level is controlled by the volume & can be routed to headphones.  You won't have any problems living in an apartment.

You can set it up just like any other video game. The receiver/TV is your amp. The noise level is controlled by the volume settings & can be routed to headphones. You won't have any problems living in an apartment.

Oh, good. Thought I wouldn't be able to play this for a long while. Now I'll just have to find a guitar to pick up.

Thanks for the info.

I JUST went into the in-game shop last night and discovered you can buy the songs from the original game individually. I thought you could only import them. I'm excited :)

Is the Lenny Kravitz song missing?

The original ON DISK songs must be imported by purchasing the pack. The original game's DLC songs are individually downloadable ... As long as you're not on PC, since the purchase of original RS songs in RS 2014 is still jacked.

"Are You Gonna Go My Way?" was a RS1 on disk song. You have to buy the import pack to get it.

Good selection of Maiden tracks, but I might have to wait for a sale. Maybe I will be good enough to play them semi coherently by then.

BB deal of the day has

Maestro by Gibson - Single Cutaway Electric Guitar - Blue for 75 dollars

I have th game but don't know jack about guitars. Is this a good deal, even for a beginner, is it the cheapest quality guitar i can get?
The way I understand it, the Maestro line is a maybe a step up from from the First Act guitars, if that. They are not made by Gibson, just owned by them. Supposedly they are not even sold in music stores, just box store retail chains like BB. I'd spend a little more on a better guitar, but it's up to you

You will always have SOME sound come from the guitar itself, as the pick hits the strings. No avoiding that. Even an unplugged electric guitar makes SOME noise this way, but, unless you're super-heavy handed on the strings, it will be relatively quiet, (but not silent) and shouldn't disturb the neighbors. A solid-body electric guitar doesn't resonate sound the same way a hollow-body acoustic guitar does. It makes noise, but not a lot. Hope that makes sense.

No. Avoid. :speaktothehand:

Much better off going to guitarcenter and looking for one of those deals they had for the guitar-a-thon sale, like the Schecter Riot6 or Dean Custom250.

Sale was suppose to end on 10/27 according to this

http://www.guitarcenter.com/guitar-a-thon-g26926t0.gc

but there's a chance it's still going as an unadvertised sale. As in the guitars can be had at the lower price, BUT YMMV since you may need the store manager to approve it.

And there's still the BB.com deal where you buy the Game+Cable bundle and you save $50 on select guitars. Know you said you had the game, so you'd have to see about selling off the spare.

The selection has been picked over a bit. But best choice I see right now would be the Duo-Sonic @ $150

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/squier-174-classic-vibe-duo-sonic-174-50s-electric-guitar-desert-sand/9298574.p?id=1218087594543&skuId=9298574

IIRC, they were priced at 200 when the deal first popped up, so $100 after the entire promo is really good.

And if you end up hating it, you should have no trouble getting at least that much for the guitar.

Otherwise you could try hunting Sams Club for the old RS guitar bundle. If the store has it in stock, it should be priced around $50 for the guitar+game+cable, SUPER YMMV.

The Maestro line is Gibson slapping an old brand name onto a cheapo bundle just so that Gibson name is visible in a place that normally wouldn't carry guitars.

It's the same thing that Fender did with their Starcaster line of guitars.

Gives them a retail presence in places like Walmart, Target, etc. Quality is the last thing they're thinking of when they made these.

Though the exception to that is this Starcaster:

Wouldn't mind some time with this. :)

Did the $7.99 original rocksmith offer expire?
It was a 2 day sale at BB. They had them sold out less than one day in, and they stayed that way for the last 2 days or so. Now they have more for shipping back at $29.99. Look out for another weekend sale with it soon. Was $10 forever through Gamers club then $8 right when that ended. They seem hell bent on getting rid of em.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking, but wasn't sure how loud it would be. I'll have to try out a guitar once and see how loud it is.

Thanks for the info.

I actually own this guitar and have for 1 year and a half. I bought it when it was on sale for about the same price (late night drunk decision, but always wanted an electric guitar but could never rationalize spending $300 + for guitar and amp). Anyhow, I got it home and was very pleasantly surprised. I'm no stranger to guitars. I own a vintage Epiphone acoustic, and it is an amazing instrument. This guitar is no Epiphone. HOWEVER, it is a great starter guitar, and for the price, an amazing deal. The only issue I have is the lack of tonal customization. You have a single humbucker, pickup and that is it. It sounds decent enough, but if you wanted to spend $150-$200 on a better guitar, you'd get a much better guitar.

That being said, It is comfortable to play, it stays in tune, and for all intents and purposes is a great starter guitar. I'd never play it outside the apartment, but for something that you're going to use to play Rocksmith, or d*ck around playing along your favorite songs via the included amp, the guitar is an amazing deal for $75. AND if you buy Rocksmith, you get an additional $50 off, essentially making this guitar package $25.

I've owned this guitar for a year and half and have no problems. I love playing it. I play it daily. Just make sure to buy better stringsthen the ones included in the package. Those included are awful (they sound awful and they break easily).

If this deal comes back in stock, jump on it. After a year or two, if you still enjoy playing, buy your $500 midrange.

Maiden songs? Fear of the Dark and Aces High?

Damnit... now I have to buy this game and a guitar.

I've been putting buying a guitar off for a while now, seems like what...about two decades since I probably ever first thought "I wanna play guitar!" Now I have to I guess.

Still waiting on on demand and getting impatient due to wanting like hell to play this game and having $75 still banked in microsoft bucks...

So my son just right now (like 5 minutes ago) finally took the $10 copy of this game (the original) I got from the MS store way back when. It has been sitting in my office for a year. He is a guitar player and wants a bass for Christmas. So I figure if he likes the first Rocksmith I'll get him the 2014 version for Christmas as well. Now I need to start looking into all the DLC options...

He's an 8th grader and him and his friends just formed a band. He's actually the drummer for them, but has taken guitar lessons for a while and like I said also wants to get into bass. I'm assuming Rocksmith 2014 would be a nice intro to bass for him. His short-term goal is to be in the Jazz Band in high school next year.

Nice IO.

Was that $10 version the one that included bass content?

Honestly don't remember.

But if it does, there's an option to play emulated bass with any electric so that'll give him an idea of what the bass tracks are like

No, it was the vanilla version. However, the songs can be imported into RS14. The imported tracks will have bass support. $20 for 50 songs and a cable to go along w/ RS14 is a pretty good deal.

I've been so disinterested in the DLC so far that I'm sitting here mulling over paying out $60 of what was supposed to be my RS DLC slush fund to buy COD:Ghosts on Demand...

In all honesty, at least for me anyhow, bass is far easier to learn than guitar. I dabbled with regular guitar off and on and could never get my hand/chord coordination down.

I've only really started playing bass last week with Rocksmith and feel far more confident. I still have some issues, but simpler songs like "Float On" I can almost completely nail at full difficulty.

This. It's a great starter guitar. The Meastro LPJ was my first guitar that I got 7 years ago and I still have it and play occasionally. It's the guitar that I learnt on and its served its purpose well.

Wow... Those D'Addario strings would be fine... They're 9s, but I know a lot of people that play 9s. Hmm... I have the $5 surprise GC from BB... Make it $5 for 10 sets of strings... Hmmm...

Nice!  Ordered a set of the EB Hybrids with free expedited (Silver has it's benefits, still). Too be there aren't any 5-string strings, though...

And of course, Best Buy found more stock of the Oscar Schmidt Electric/Acoustic Mandolins, almost a year later.  I told my fiance that's what I wanted for Christmas last year and when she went to order one, they were sold out.  They were on clearance then, but aren't any longer, but the price is only $10 higher now.  And now I have no extra money.. :\

Am I crazy or am I the only one that has trouble with palm mutes? I finally figure out how to do them but I find it hard to transition into them. For some reason I had a hell of a time figuring out that the bridge was at the very end and not that middle part.
