Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

The Les Paul deal is dead now. Got in an order for the blue one, too. Don't have faith that I'll get it.

Booooo!!!!

"Dear Musician,

You recently placed an order for the Gibson 2013 Les Paul Studio that was on closeout. Unfortunately, due to the great deal these items sold out and we do not have inventory to fulfill your order.

Due to the inconvenience we are issuing a $20.00 in-house-credit. This credit will be posted to your account within 24-48 hours. Please call us and reference your original order number to use this credit.

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. "

A $20 credit does not feel like an appropriate consolation. I understand they will be issuing lots of them and that really adds up, but I ordered while it was still "in stock" and ready to ship. Then my backordered notice said they have more on order. A $20 credit isn't gonna do much for me at guitar center, especially since I'll most likely have to pay for shipping. I guess I could get a free book or something. Such a letdown

I think they meant to discount the left-handed LP, but they screwed up and are offering a $20 credit for their blunder.

This is from slickdeals:

Gibson 2013 Les Paul Accommodation
Hello Everyone,

We would be happy to work towards accommodating those of you whom are affected by our selling out of the Gibson 2013 Les Paul. We have other options that you may be interested in. Due to the likeliness that these alternatives will sell out as well, we are limiting these accommodation orders to a quantity of one discounted guitar per order.

To make these arrangements and discuss pricing, please send us an email.

Sincerely,
Casey P.

It appears that Guitar Center's consolation prize for the botched LP deal are:

2014 Gibson Les Paul Studio for $699
2014 Gibson Les Paul Studio Pro for $987

Plus a generic hard case for $39. Not sure what I think of this deal now.

Sweet...I hope it's not to technical for this beginner. Might have to get a harmonica and strap some cymbals to my knees.

There is a new patch for Xbox 360

  • Fixed a rare issue where the game would crash when selecting Tone Assignment, on Rhythm Path, When Tone Designer missions are available
  • The correct play style now always appears for RS2014 on-disc and DLC bass arrangements
  • Fixed an issue where the user could not exit the calibration checklist if changes are made to the current settings of the Real Tone Cable Gain
  • Fixed an incorrect character in the lyrics of the RS1 DLC song Black Betty by Ram Jam
  • Sorting the song by Artist will now put the titles in the correct alphabetical order
  • Improvements to detection of Harmonics when a capo is attached
  • Fixed a rare issue where the UI would lock in the Tuner
  • Fixed a crash in Session Mode when using a unique band/tuning setting
  • Further improved general game stability

Only Happy When It Rains, I Think I'm Paranoid, and Special would be cool with me. Plus they would be easy to learn.

Garbage Song Pack – $7.99
  •  “I Think I’m Paranoid” (Drop D [Bass])
  •  “Only Happy When It Rains”
  •  “Stupid Girl” (No Rhythm)

I have one in the box (M13), but have never used it. I do use my HD500, though, which is basically a M13 with a foot pedal and amp modeling.

The stock patches suck a little, but it is not difficult to coax some really nice sounds out of one of these units... I use the crap out of my HD500 now that I've learned a little about it.

Of course, there are no stock sounds in the M13, so that goes out the window. It seems like it would be awesome for sheer ease of setting up tones. The set list function is cool - just set the bank up and call it whatever type of music it's set up for and you don't have to set a bunch of pedals for every song you play.

So I went to play RS 2014 this morning and there was a title update. Anybody know what might have been fixed?

Rocksmith works with all standard jack guitars. $50 when it's on sale is the best deal you'll usually find. Rocksmith wasn't too good for me. It only helped me with fretting. I want to get BandFuse now that's it's cheap.

I just picked up Bandfuse from Gamestop - haven't had the chance to try it yet though. The only drawback that I can see(and I'll probably catch flak for this) is the lack of a official and custom DLC, unlike Rocksmith.

Bandfuse was fine. It wasn't great. It would've been a pretty good competitor to RS1 - but it was a poor competitor to RS2014.

Been a while since I've even played RS. Been working outside of the game and learning far more...

Ran across this article today about State College, PA, home to Penn State:

snip-
Some would agree and others may argue, but there are reasons many musicians play in bars — the constant crowds, the artistic outlet and one of the only ways to actually make a solid name for a band in this area.
However, every musician knows playing for the money should be put last on their list. But at the same time, artists need to put food on the table just like everyone else.
-snip-
Singer and guitarist Kate Twoey , of the local, all-female, Americana band Pure Cane Sugar , said she’s been part of the local music scene for more than 20 years now, and while she loves being able to play shows on a regular basis, the music industry hasn’t changed much more than what it was 10 years ago.
“Just because you love what you do doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make a certain amount of money doing it,” she said.
A band’s payment really varies, she said. A three-hour show at one venue could pay $200, while a two-hour show somewhere else could pay $1,500 — depending on multiple variables.
-snip-
The truth is the cover charge is between three to five dollars. Twoey said that hasn’t changed in 20 years, and “that’s a little ridiculous.”

“Playing in a bar in State College doesn’t guarantee that anyone will show up — [bands] have to work through social media [to appeal to fans],” he said.
The bands get paid from the money generated at the door, $2 to $5, Mangan said. He declined to release any average payment bands receive.
Mangan said he feels the payment is fair because bands realize “if they bring in a good crowd, they’re going to bring in good money.”
When it comes down to the argument of playing covers or original music at shows, there’s almost always a decision to be made — most bands these days must play covers of songs to play the bars, which can be creatively stifling to some musicians.
Guitarist/singer Eric Faust of the band Lenina Crowne said he sees himself as an original musician in an original band. While he enjoys the covers the band plays to some degree, he said it’s pretty sad throwing an original song in a cover-based set, causing audience interest to dip at bars.
“I don’t think any of us have a really strong passion to play covers,” he said. “I don’t see how anyone could.”

Bassist Greg Folsom, of My Hero Zero, said as a band wanting to get noticed, it’s easier when it’s playing popular music.
“A lot of people want to go out and dance,” he said. “For them, the band is a DJ.”

Café 210 usually books local bands to play cover songs unless there’s an original act who already has a large following, Mangan said.
As far as choosing local acts, he said, there aren’t many bands now that stay around for more than a year.
There used to be many bands to choose from, he said, but the people who are more into DJs and “kids playing Guitar Hero” seem to have lost interest.

“When you calculate in inflation and things, a musician used to be kind of making a decent living, unlike now,” he said. “That’s the common story of an artist — do what you’re passionate about, but don’t make a whole lot doing it.”
But even in a situation where you’re not playing in a band that’s your preferred style of music, Price said, “you’re still playing music,” and that’s better than any minimum wage job.

Other than that, there hasn't been much going on.

"til next time kiddies and kiddettes.  Just keep on keeping on.

I'm always amazed that someone would put off learning a life skill - one that takes a lifetime and thousands of hours to master... to save $20. It would have been like me saying "Ugh. I was gonna go to college, but they didn't have a tuition sale this week. I'll just wait."

Would a Schecter Damien-6 be suitable for a beginner or should I find something else to start with? I saw it in a pawn shop and fell in love with it. Looked it up online and saw that it suits what I'd like to learn and the price was right.

Yeah, I put off learning guitar until the past few years (mid-30s now) and I'm kicking my own ass for not having the initiative to learn when I was a teen. I never thought I would have as much fun as I am. For about 5 years I played trumpet in orchestra/marching band when I was in middle/high school and found it to be tedious and rather boring, so that's probably what kept me from pursuing any other realm of music.

OMG... If you knew how many time I said to my parents - "You MADE me stay in soccer camp, you MADE me finish the season in baseball... but you let me quit guitar after 2 lessons... WTF?!?" I don't think I would have had the impetus to practice then, though. I didn't even have that drive 10 years ago when I took lessons. Once RS came out, it changed the way I felt about learning the guitar... But, yeah, I'm 41 and it would have been so much easier to learn guitar with the more nimble hands of a 20 year old...

It would be a great starter guitar. Just don't get a Schecter with a Floyd Rose bridge. You'll have issues changing tunings on the fly for different songs. You want to get one of the Damien 6's with the string through bridge, instead.

This is what you DO NOT WANT:

Those little thing on the bottom (and at the top of the neck) lock the strings so that you can play metal music with dive bombs and stuff... but to change tunings, you have to unscrew all of those things, change the tuning, and then lock it back down. You won't want to do that very often.

Swung by gamestop tonight to pick up bandfuse. God I hate gamestop. It's not news, but my copy was gutted and the box was a little torn up. I would have much rather gone to best buy and price matched but I can't get there for a couple days and wasn't sure how long the $20 price would be for. Plus I wanted to ask if I could have the free jimi Hendrix dlc that they were offering last month. Sadly the answer was no

Reading a few comments on this thread is actually what caused me to jump on this deal.  The next step is finding a guitar.  I apologize for being a giant pain in the ass, but it seems like a lot of the links to recommended guitars are now dead.  It's going to take me a few months to be able to buy one, but I was hoping to get one in the $100 range...  I don't want to make a huge investment only to find out that I don't enjoy the game and/or playing guitar.  I assume (for purposes of the game) that most guitars are created equally?  If not, what are the best "bang for buck" options?  I'm really excited to start playing as soon as I can afford a guitar!

edit: it should be noted that if it's best to get a guitar closer to the $150-$200 range that I can put off buying it until the winter, but it wouldn't be my first choice unless there's a HUGE difference in quality

edit edit: No point in beating around the bush... this is basically what I was thinking of http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Carrying-Accessories-DirectlyCheap-Translucent/dp/B005BLWOPM/ref=sr_1_19?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1398134074&sr=1-19&keywords=guitar

victimsofadown, I'm not one to recommend guitars and your looking down the road for a cheap axe. Here's a option, try Musicians Friend web site. They have a large selection in the 100-200 dollar price range and if you apply for their credit card, there's no interest payments for 6 months on items over $149-500. Plus no tax and free shipping and sometimes they offer 5 to 15 percent  off additional savings.

The word circulating for tomorrows dlc on Rocksmith 2014 is going to be

Spin Doctors  "Two Princes"

Everclear       "Father of Mine"

Silverchair     "Tomorrow"

You can find better for not much more money. I've even seen that Viper in a couple of Big Lots stores & believe me, they were rough around the edges. Best to avoid as your 1st guitar.

I know it's like beating a dead horse but the Dean Vendetta really is a nice solid starter for $100. If that's not to your liking, then check out these Washburns from WorldMusicSupply:

http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/Washburn-RX12MRD-Metallic-Red-Electric-Guitar.html

$100 & free shipping. They have a few color choices. Just look thru the CLOSEOUT tab.

While I don't have any personal experience with this model, Washburn makes some nice instruments & haven't really seen any complaints about it either.

And WMS is a good retailer. I've bought from them before and very pleased with the way things were handled.

Seeing as you're gonna save up for a bit, wait for the sales that'll pop up around Memorial Day & 4th of July. You never know what may get put on sale. Good luck.

I am a HUGE fan of 90s alternative. This better be true or my day will be ruined!

I can attest to that. I learned within 2 or 3 months that this is something I want to continue so I quickly yearned for a better guitar and got something a little better, but I would have never known if I didn't try out that Dean Vendetta first. And be careful that your guitar isn't too sucky, either, because any problems with your guitar's construction or sound and it might ruin your experience.

I think you're right, it wasn't actually in Rocky IV, I think it was even featured in one of the soundtrack albums.
It wasn't. Trust me, I'm way too in to the Rocky stuff. Heck, I was in the crowd for the fight in the sixth film.
------
Since I'm still relatively new to the series (December), I noticed they haven't really done any sales in DLC. Have they ever done a sale before? If not I'll probably quit waiting and just buy most of the stuff I want.

The old DLC went on sale between the end of DLC for RS1 and the release of RS2014. They used to have some occasional big packs, as well. Nothing since 2014 was released, though - and with weekly DLC for the foreseeable future, I'm not expecting any sales.

I'll Second (third?) the Dean Vendetta recommendation. Good guitar for the price. Also, like someone else said, if you're waiting, make SURE you check the Guitar Center Memorial Day ales and July 4th sales. They usually have some sort of Les Paul for 100 or less - which would be a nice starter guitar.
