Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

It's a good price. But sucks that they pulled the $60 price over the weekend just so they could toss it into the Goldbox sale at a buck cheaper.

Oh well. RS is worth it at 80. $60 should be a no brainer.

EDIT: DEAD-43% claimed

So the game won't register e on my guitar (smallest string). I tried for about 15 minutes to tune my guitar and it would get hung up on that string. No registering at all, not even -50 or +50...what the fuck?

This game is pissing me off really fast.

Sounds like it's registering the the other strings, so you probably have a problem with your guitar, not RS. So try the following things:

-make sure to use the tuner found in the menu. This is much more accurate than the tuner that pops up before a song
-turn volume all the way up on your guitar
-use the B string (green) to tune the high E string (purple). Play B @ the 5th fret and use that to get high E (open string) to sound the same. Then use the ingame tuner to check.

The high E may have been so out of tune that the game no longer recognized it as high E
Never heard of this brand. Any experienced guys want to give their opinion?
I have a Rogue Resonator guitar. It's a nice build. Seems to be pretty good quality - and it was cheap (as Resonators go)...

Well, just as I did research and about to pull the trigger on the rogue rocketeer...except now my wife wants me to buy an acoustic so my son can learn on it too. So from my understanding, I need the cable to connect to the RS cable, and a pickup that was mentioned earlier.

How's this for the guitar;

Is there any major difference in how it plays other than it's louder?

Have you thought about getting an electric acoustic guitar? One of my friends told me you can actually plug the headphones right into the guitar too. Kinda neat if its true.

Yeah, as DeathDream mentioned, you could just go with an acoustic electric (one that has the pick up built into it) and eliminate a lot of pieces. Rogue is just MF's house brand, by the way. They're generally decent, but it's always good to read reviews and look at the components that comprise the guitar (body wood, neck wood, pick ups, tuners, etc.) to see how those are regarded.

This is the cheapest acoustic electric that MF offers.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/rogue-dreadnought-cutaway-acoustic-electric-guitar

If you notice, there's a "used" option, with a few nice ones that will allow you to save some cash (just stay away from the "needs repair" ones).

As for the differences, acoustic guitars are really completely different from electric guitars. You can play them the same way, but they're just going to sound totally different (though I guess not in the game). An acoustic guitar projects its own natural sound due to being hollow. So, no matter what sound the game is translating that to, you're still going to hear it, which could be distracting if you're playing a distorted metal/alternative/whatever song, and you hear clean, resonating notes coming from your own guitar.
Have you thought about getting an electric acoustic guitar? One of my friends told me you can actually plug the headphones right into the guitar too. Kinda neat if its true.
Headphones? Why would you plug headphones into an acoustic electric. As mentioned above...it gives its own sound. If you're thinking of "baby is sleeping" concerns, the best way to play an acoustic softly is with your thumb and actually trying to be quiet. Headphones aren't going to do anything for you.

Yes - the strings are harder to play and you can't play some of the songs in Rocksmith because you don't have access to all the frets. And it's going to be loud. With all due respect, don't listen to your wife. Mine said the same thing the other night when I said I was going to get my son a half scale electric guitar next year.

Electrics are easier on fingers and you won't have to listen to the constant tinkering of your kid if you don't want to. if you do, plug it into an amp and let him wail.

If you're getting a guitar for the game, get an electric. You will be much happier in the long run.

From a Rocksmith perspective, this guitar is gonna make it harder on you. Primarily because there is no cutaway on this model. And that's gonna make it really tough to access the higher frets. Second, you only have 20 frets. While you don't go that high very often in RS, you'll have to accept that deficiency. Try to find an A/E guitar like this:
http://www.rondomusic.com/jg1cvtwrs.html
Not recommending this specific guitar as I haven't researched it. Just wanted you to see an example that has at least 21 frets and the cutaway so you can easily access those high frets

I say do one of two things:

**Go with an acoustic electric like Death and N8rock mention. It'll eliminate alot of extra variables. That acoustic pickup is best for someone that already owns an acoustic. Not saying the pickup is bad, but I've read results all over the place from it works great, to it doesn't register at all. Why deal with all that. Starting out is hard enough; you don't need more roadblocks

**Or, if you can swing it, get your son the acoustic and get yourself the electric. Gives you the best solution to play RS and let's your son have his very own guitar so he can play alongside his dear old dad;) (use that on the missus).

But if you're set on an acoustic with that pickup, choose a guitar that has a cutaway, has at least 21 frets and make sure it uses STEEL strings, not nylon. Don't think that pickup works with nylon stringed guitars.

EDIT: beaten by crazedracer. That's what I get for trying to post while I'm busy with other stuff
I was looking at the Ibanez RG350DX used at guitar center for $380 but I just love white guitars. Kind of clouds my judgement :) Opinions are welcomed.
Just remembered I wanted to comment on this. I LOVE Ibanez electrics for one reason: Wizard II neck. I picked up an RG2EX1 (which also comes in white) a couple years ago for basically that reason alone. I have small hands, so playing barre chords for extended periods of time really starts to cramp my hand up bad. The Wizard II neck is thinner and flat, making it a lot more comfortable to play than the rounded, stockier necks most Gibson/Fender/etc. guitars have.

Here's a link to the RG2EX1 for anyone who's curious.

This is exactly right. I have an acoustic/electric that I tried with Rocksmith. While it does (technically) work, the overlap of the sound coming from the guitar and the sound from the Rocksmith amp was not tolerable to me. I don't think you'll be happy with it either.

I'm so envious of you all that bought that Schecter from Amazon. I'll be able to get something comparable from EBay for about the same price, but new would have been really nice. :(

For some reason, I'm dead set now in getting a Schecter.
Headphones? Why would you plug headphones into an acoustic electric. As mentioned above...it gives its own sound. If you're thinking of "baby is sleeping" concerns, the best way to play an acoustic softly is with your thumb and actually trying to be quiet. Headphones aren't going to do anything for you.
Like I said, I have no idea how it works or if it was even true. It was what my friend told me when he was looking at them. I don't care for acoustic guitars so never really went to deep into that conversation.

Nice guitar! I ended up with an ESP though with EMP pickups :)

Wasn't it me and you that were trying to hard not to buy that thing? I remember having that conversation with someone. At that point I didn't want a guitar but look two weeks later and I'm looking what is out there. Got the ESP LTD MH-1000 for $450 used. Has the same EMG pickups the amazon Schecter had too. But I got it in black. I'd suggest taking a look at the reviews on that baby. If you are interested, I'll let you know how it plays with rocksmith.

Yep. I tried with all my might to resist it... and now I am really upset that I didn't bite. Though, in looking at Schecters on ebay, the resale prices aren't so bad and even though most are a little more expensive, a lot of them have hard SKB cases or the like with them, so I'll come out a little ahead.

I went on GC.com this morning just to look a little at used Shecters on there. I'm watching like 16 auctions right now to get a feel for what completed prices look like and what kind of quality (dings, scratches vs. not used at all) goes for what.

Pretty quiet deals-wise.

On a personal note, took a couple nights off from RS after my last event. Got thru 3 songs and then hit this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qpSJFfeqHU
I know it's only asking me to get 50k. But the best I did on my only attempt tonight was about 20k (turned it off immediately after that). How the fuck am I suppose to pull this off:whistle2:k.

I'll say this, RS thinks much more highly of my skills than I do:lol:

Gonna sleep on it and decide next time if I remove it. Hate to back away from a challenge but I haven't come across any this crazy

You're going to see that more and more. Now, if I've scored 20k, it wants to see 60 or 70 every time . Use leveler to level up full sections. That''s what I do now.

On that particular song, if you can 100% level the 1st section, you'll score a shit ton of points when you perform. Bends get a lot of points. I love Petty, so I've worked that song pretty hard. The solo is hard as crap, though.

I took some time night before last to gold medal all technique challenges :) I had to watch a YouTube video on harmonics to gold that, but they're all done now.

Can you link us to the harmonics vid you watched? I can't even get bronze on that shit.

That song, wow, I do not think I could come close to pulling that off right now.

Natural harmonics video

This one sent me from a score of like 5k to 90,000 in 2 plays... Some say the harmonics in RS are screwed up, but I did exactly what this guy showed in the first 4 minutes and got a gold.

That TP&H song is VERY difficult. I've leveled up stuff here and there, but nowhere near 100% in it.

Musicians friend just cut the price of the Epiphone Les Paul Special II to $144... You could add some picks to get over 149 and get 5% off... It ain't much, but if there was still people out there that are considering picking RS up, that's a good starter guitar.

Thanks for the tips on the Intro and that vid on Harmonics.

Levelled the opening to 79% and between that and nailing brief sections of the solo, I got up to 41k on my 2nd try. I'll raise some other sections before my next attempt.

And the talk on Harmonics got me to finally try it out. Was able to get Silver on my first try and got thru 5 levels on Harmonically Challenged once I realized it was doing a simon says pattern. I find it easy to play harmonics on the 5th fret, a little harder on the 7th and harder still on the 12th

Gonna try again with the Damien instead of the LP Jr 'cause I noticed the LP Jr.'s been going going outta tune more frequently lately. Not sure if it's due me me using it so much lately(testing out my new strap locks) or maybe the strings are starting to go (still using stock strings)

By the way, love the strap locks. Went ahead and ordered another set thru Amazon since they have em in stock (black this time). Going on the Damien and my other strap

Just the opposite here. 12th is the easiest for me, 7th is pretty easy too, but 5th is sometimes hit and miss for me.

Funny how that works out. I get a nice ring on the 5th frets every time. But move up to the 7th and it's not as consistent. It'll sound a bit dirty at times. By the 12th fret, it sounds really weak or wrong

Figured part of my problem was the high action on my LP jr. I'll get a better idea when I try on the Damien

I just got my ESP LTD MH-1000. Crazy awesome! Since it is used I already have a few things I want to replace but it sounds great. Rocksmith wasn't missing a beat either. Unlike my Yamaha, when I was down on fret 5 it would say I wasn't but I was. Haven't have that issue yet with my ESP and I've played six songs so far. PR

Just ordered a used copy off of GoHastings w/the 30% off promo. Looking forward to giving this a try, although I'm not too familiar with most of the songs on the setlist.

Well, gave Harmonics a try on the Damien and breezed right thru. Able to play them easily on 5th, 7th and 12th frets. Only had a little trouble consistently ringing the high E on the 5th fret.

Regardless, got Gold on the first try tonight. And got 1.5mil on Harmonically Challenged. Got the 'chievo and wasn't even trying:lol:

Course the bad news is that my LP jr is outta whack. Will have to set aside some time to work on it, starting with a string change. I'm sure I've easily put in 50 hours on the LP jr alone

EDIT: also got Good Enough up to 58k. It was alot easier than I thought it would be. Though not looking forward to the eventual 90k mark

Hey, let us know the condition it arrives in. I'm curious to know if they ship the RS cable with the game.
And I also didn't recognize a bunch of songs. But they've mostly been fun to play

Yeah, I didn't know much of the setlist either besides one or two. But for the ones I didn't know I've actually liked. However, I can't say that for all of them. There have been a few songs I've just sluggishly went through once just enough to qualify.

On another note, I couldn't put my guitar down yesterday. My fingers are so raw! Got the double encore and score over 100k on a single note song achievements. Also hit level 6 :)

This game is fucking sweet. Just got done playing through some of the beginner songs and I love it.

Kind of don't like how there's not a difficulty select, would be nice to be able to work my way up from easy to hard, not a fan of doing well then getting like all 6 strings thrown in at once haha, but at the same time it's a good way to try some things that I probably normally wouldn't.

They have different game modes for songs. Single Note, Combo, and Chord. All self explanatory. If you don't want to work with chords right off the bat, go for single note. That is what I did. Now I'm sticking with combo most of the time.

If you're talking about six single notes getting thrown out at you crazy fast, I know what you mean. I usually pause the game at that spot, practice it for a few minutes to a hour, come back to the game, and try again.

Yeah, I meant a bunch of different single notes. There was one song where I was cruising along pretty well, then a solo came up, and even though they were all within a fret of each other, the different strings threw me off.. I had to look down to see where the hell my hand was, of course it was not even close to where I wanted it, and by the time I looked up again I had just missed the entire solo haha. Need to get more acquainted with the guitar and where my hands are / should be without having to look down.. But I'm sure all that will come over time.

I guess I should let people know of this pretty sweet deal.

Two Guitar Stands for $15 ($7.50 each) - Ebay - Free Shipping
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Musicians-G...ccessories&hash=item2c62bc29ca#ht_1818wt_1263
This is a full body frame with a lock for the neck, not sure what they are officially called.
If this one sells out, check his store, he put one up right after I bought one.

I bought a set from this guy and he ships them the very same day. Shipped from KS and I had them in the morning. (I live in Iowa). Both stands are excellent, no issues with either of them. Great for people who have two guitars. If you only have one, sell the other stand on craigslist for $10 making it a $5 stand.

Glad I saw this, haven't played it for about a week (got frustrated with the 5 lives on riff repeater, and having to do it on lower levels). Going to start it up again after classes. [one of the updates is picking riff difficulty level, and 30 lives on riff repeater]

+ Pearl Jam coming on 7th :D I am pleased Rocksmith.

And the patch is a Godsend.

Finally nailed the solo on both arrangements of "In Bloom" last night, unlocked master mode on both with 100k performances. Leveled everything except the solo up to 100% in "Breed" - solo is at 87%. Will finish that up tonight. It's a LOT more helpful to have 30 lives than the constant starting over or pause, restart...

Excited about PJ next week. I figure "Jeremy", "Alive" and "Evenflow"... Though at least one of those has some kind of strange tuning for the solo (Open D or something), so probably only 2 of those. :)

Hit level 8 last week.

I don't think, as long as DLC continues, I'll ever get tired of this game. I did play a couple of hours of MW3 MP this weekend because my fingers were hurting from trying to pass the Nirvana solos last week... Otherwise, it's been all Rocksmith. MyStats on XBOX says 106 hours for me in RS... I think that's low...

Yeah, the 30 level increase is awesome! Also like the added option to pick the precision tuner between songs. May just be me, but it seems like they tightened the tuner up a bit

MyStats had me at 101hrs when I last checked. But I estimated my time closer to 120. Either way, that's a whole mess of Rocksmith:lol:
