Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

This should help get you started.

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

Got to Level 7 last night. Now every song in my event list is asking me to get over 80k! My last even was 44k being my highest. Quite the jump!

Manged to pick up the best buy version with a gamestop price match over the weekend. Got to say it's a hell of alot better than anything GH or Rockband put out. the antonation(didn't know about it until this game) is off on my guitar so i have to figure out how to fix it.

There are TONS of Youtube videos on intonation. You just need to have a small screwdriver and a good tuner. It's pretty easy, really.
Funny thing about that the Dean XMT satin finish. I ordered a week ago and was backordered to ship on Monday. Now so many have been backordered, they're not shipping until 4/27. Hope mine is one of the first orders.
Yeah, I got a notice about a back order, but I didn't see a date...that blows.

I read instructions on how to do it. tighten/loosen the screws at the bridge to get the 12th fret in tune, then i have to retune and check it again correct?

Yes. Just make sure you turn in the correct direction to fix it AND that you use VERY tiny adjustments. A little turn goes a long way when fixing intonation.

I found that out real quick, I turned it a quarter turn and it went down half a note lol. There seems to be a small gap in tuning that I can't get rid of between the two octaves tho.
I thought I posted a link, but here it is again. If you pick the satin natural, it shows the current backorder shipping date which is 4/27.

Crazy, since the satin natural used to always be available and the black was consistently out of stock.

Wow that sucks. I had originally ordered that Dean but when I got the backorder email I called them and cancelled. Ended up getting this with the $20 coupon. Epiphone weren't participating in the coupon but I just called them up and they applied it anyways.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Les-Paul-Special-I-P90-Electric-Guitar-107274854-i2101231.gc

Got it today, and it is very nice looking, got the worn cherry look.

I am thinking of returning it though and getting this with humbuckers instead of the p90s.
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Ltd-Ed-Special-I-Electric-Guitar-106503295-i1819177.gc

If anyone knows much about guitars and can tell me if it would be worth returning and going for the humbucker pickups instead that would be great. I have been reading about p90s and it seems they get a hum/noise alot of the time, im not sure because I don't have an amp yet just playing through rocksmith.

Cool that you got them to include the discount

As for the two models, it looks like the humbucker special has a Basswood body instead of the mahogany body on the P90. I say keep the P90 if it's not giving you problems in RS and it feels good.

Hell, i'd offer to trade my XMT for your P90. I've been itchin to try a P90 guit like your Special I or the SX Callisto. And my XMT rarely gets used since I bought the Schecter. Just not crazy enough to go for #4:)

And if you want a whole mess of strings, Amazon has the the same D'Addario XL strings from yesterday, in 25 packs. The 9's are 74.99 and the 10's are 70.41

Stopped by a Guitar Center last night. Told the employee that I was new to guitars and wanted a basic model. He strongly recommended upgrading to something in the $200 price range (with double humbucker pickups and individually adjustable intonation). He didn't have anything good to say about Dean XMTs or the bundle's Epiphone LP Jr.

For those with experience playing, what are your thoughts? Are the $100 entry guitars really that bad? I picked up a strummed a variety of guitars, and obviously the more expensive ones feel sturdier. Didn't try plugging them into any amps though b/c I don't even know a chord to strum to see if I like the sound.

Ask a guy at guitar center helping you if he will play them. Same song, same amp, different guitars. I'm sure they will, they get commission for the sale.

Alot of the early guitar advice centered around the quality the the LP jr and alternative guitars in a similar price range, which is how the Dean came up. I put some of those posts behind the spoiler tags down below.

But I can at least tell you my experience as someone who has both the LP jr and XMT. Basically either is fine for use in Rocksmith. But the Dean is better equipped and gives you greater range if you keep playing beyond RS.
I haven't found either to cause problems. Though I can say the LP jr can be more frustrating to intonate properly because of the wrap-around bridge (requires more patience to nail it down). The bridge on the Dean lets you do individual intonation, so it goes by pretty quick. And maybe I got lucky but both guitars stay in tune. So no issues there either. Personally love the LP jr, but can understand why it would be dismissed

Wonder if the GC guy ever played the XMT and if he knows that it is equipped with dual humbuckers and individually intoneable strings. Did he provide any advice other than the pups and intonation?
Yo Con! I've been playing guitar for almost the same amount of time you've been wanting to learn it. ;)

This might not be $80, but for $19 more, this is going to be a HELL of a lot better than anything that will come bundled with Rocksmith. It's a new Dean Vendetta (their strat model) XMT. It's received great overall user reviews and the action is pretty low on the fretboard, so it will be easier on your fingers. Dean is an excellent company that producers high quality equipment. This might not be on the same level of quality as their high-profile ML's, Dave Mustaine series, or DIME series Razorbacks, but great nonetheless, especially for the price.

For a little bit more you can check out some of the starter Ibanez models here...

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/elec...00.00&gP=1&pS=20&v=g&sB=bS&lP=c&catId=site1AA

Here's 7 pages of various axes in your price range.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/elec...2:New&gP=1&pS=20&v=g&sB=bS&lP=c&catId=site1AA

Also keep in mind what guitar model you will feel comfortable with. Strat style bodies are typically best suited for beginners for many reasons. One, they are perfectly shaped to play sitting down on your lap that provides the ideal angle of the neck/fretboard for proper hand positioning...providing less hand strain.

Les Paul style bodies are a little heavier than strats (causing some neck strain after prolonged periods of playing while standing using a strap for beginners) and also feel a little less comfortable while playing sitting down...but nothing too bad. You just get used to it after a while. They're heavier due to the style of body and the wood used for both the body and neck (usually mahogany). But you get fuller and fatter tones from these.

IMO...It's best for beginners to use a strat style model. They are comfortable as well as versatile for no matter what genre of music floats your boat. IMO, at this price range, check out Ibanez guitars, especially the RGG321. It has a fixed bridge (no tremolo) but that's a plus, especially for beginners.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/elec...2:New&gP=1&pS=20&v=g&sB=bS&lP=c&catId=site1AA

Tremolos, especially licensed Floyd Rose variants (non-official Floyd Rose tremolo systems) can be a pain in the ass for newcomers to setup after any string changes. You want to focus on a solid guitar that will stay in tune after initial setup and intonation tweaks. The less technical issues you need to worry about, the better. At least for now.

I also highly recommend ESP's and Deans...

Yo Drastion! Aside from what I mentioned up above to Psychobuck, I'll recap and hopefully add a few helpful points for you particularly. If you are experiencing any joint contractures in your fingers, hands, wrists, and even neck...I highly recommend a strat model. Something light and one with really low action on the fretboard to make fingering as effortless as possible.

If you buy your guitar from a retail shop, they will usually have a guitar tech on hand to setup your new guitar. You can let them know of your situation and see if their tech can lower the action for you as much as possible. Most places do this for free when you buy a new instrument from them. If you buy online, and then bring it in, then you have to pay for the job, but it isn't something too expensive at all.

The lowest action I've seen was 1/16 of an inch on the 22 fret...for all 6 strings! Not fret buzzing at all to boot! lol I think it was a Schecter from a local ma & pa guitar shop (my favorite shops).

As for which brand, again, there are many that are great. But for beginners I suggest to buy from a physical store at first. Try out the guitars. Don't worry about not knowing how to play or anything. It's about comfort. Put it on your lap and strum a simple power chord position using the 6th, 5th, and 4th strings up and down the fretboard. This is all to get a feel for the guitar. It's all about comfort. You will know what I mean when you do this.

If you decide to buy online...at least check out a store in person to do the above to get a feel of what I'm talking about. It's one thing to read someone talking about it, it's another when you actually get hands-on. Trust me on this. Because what feels good for one guitar player, doesn't feel good for another. Everyone has their tastes, even if the differences are small.

I would also stay away from boxed sets. Those are made for parents/soccer moms who want to buy an all-in-one package who don't have the time or will to do some research. They just want something for their kids who seem interested in the guitar...at least for the moment. That, ans the quality for those, for the most part, aren't great. ;)

Used guitars are fine, but until you personally have more experience, or at least have someone you know that does have some experiences with guitar hardware knowledge, I'd stay away from used. It's better to get something new...and there are many good/great guitars for beginners at very reasonable prices. For you, the Dean Vendetta XMT would be perfect, because it's a great guitar for a beginner...it's cheap (on sale for $99 w/ free shipping)...and is known to have low action. I wouldn't worry about an amp for now. See if you can play without pain or discomfort first. Start slow exercises, but don't over do them. Slow and steady is key. If everything goes well...then invest in a simple practice amp later.

Here's the link for the Dean Vendetta: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/dean-vendetta-xmt-electric-guitar-with-tremolo

Or even a Squire Bullet Series Strat: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/squier-bullet-strat-with-tremolo

The Squire is a side brand of Fender. It's not their best product, but good. Another solid entry-level guitar for a great price. It's currently at $119...but they usually can be bought for $99 or even less during Holiday sales, etc.

Let me know if you guys need more help are more specific questions answered. I'll be glad to help further.

As for guitar review sites, they can easily be googled by searching for "guitar reviews". ;)

As mentioned above, ultimate-guitar.com is one...there's also...

http://www.guitarworld.com/?page=

and...

http://www.premierguitar.com/

But for more in-depth specifics about particular guitars, it's always best to go to the official forums. ESP for example...

Ibanez forums...

http://forum.ibanez.com/

...and Dean.

This next post was about the Les Paul Jr.
It's a decent/OK guitar, but one could definitely do a lot better with a bit more leg-work. Out of the box, I can can with relative confidence that one will need to have good amount of setup work done to it. There will be fret buzzing and as a result the neck will have to be adjusted, bridge lowered, properly intonated, etc.

But at the same time, this can happen to any guitar out of the box. But this guitar is pretty bare-bones. It only has one pup, a bridge humbucker....which means, through an amp, your tonal ranges will be limited. It's not bad per say...just limited. It's fine as part of this bundle with the game.

But as I pointed out...if you are looking for a guitar with a bit more features, better quality, durability, and longer term usage, it's better to get that Dean Vendetta XMT for $99...and the standalone game for $60 after BB @gamer coupon.
I saw deal early enough to grab it, but didn't :D I may have prefered this over the Schecter, but had already gotten in on that deal so 3 guitars is enough for me (at least for now...)

And 10 minutes left on the lightning deal. It's for the Epi '58 Flying V @ $380

does anyone know where to get a cheap microphone that will work with rocksmith? Never bought any of the GH/RB bundles so i don't have a usb one laying around. =/

Saw the Bestbuy thread and Rocksmith is suppose to be $49.99 for the week of Feb 26 - Mar 3. A little better than Amazons price

Probably try used thru Gamestop.
Or buy a game that comes bundled with a mic, like Singstar or Def Jam. If you're lucky you'll find one on sale/clearance like I did.

Couple of years ago, I bought two Naked Brothers Band games solely for the mics. Traded the games in so only spent some 3 bucks for each mic

Couple of updates:

Bestbuy online/in-store has Rocksmith
iconxbox360.gif
iconps3.gif
for $49.99, good 2/26 - 3/3
Amazon still has the
iconxbox360.gif
version at $59.99 BUT the
iconps3.gif
version got raised to $70

And don't forget to take the Official Rocksmith survey. Link in OP
So...Dean Vendetta or Evo XM? Cant really decide between the two. Any arguments for either side for someone whos used both?
Well, no one else has stepped up to answer you, so your stuck with me:lol:

If you're a beginner, like so many of us, then you probably won't notice much difference between the two. If possible, go hands-on with each model.

As for reviews, they're fairly close, with the Vendetta XMT coming out ahead.
Evo XM http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/electric_guitars/dean/evo_xm/index.html?no_takeover
Vendetta XMT http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/electric_guitars/dean/vendetta_xmt/index.html

And some Spec differences between the two:
VENDETTA XMT---------------EVO XM
Paulownia wood body-------Basswood body
Tremelo bar-------------------no tremelo
24 frets------------------------22 frets
strat body shape--------------les paul body shape

Pricing seems similar and if that's the case,go with the XMT. You'll get a guitar that's better equipped, plus it's gotten better reviews. But you gotta live with it. So try 'em out in store if possible
So...Dean Vendetta or Evo XM? Cant really decide between the two. Any arguments for either side for someone whos used both?
I bought the XMT and it is very nice. My only complaint is that the syncing with Rocksmith and the guitar are about 1/2 of a fret off. I am sure there is a way to fix it but I haven't takent he time to figure it out.

Thanks for the info you guys! Think I'll go with the Vendetta. I'm very much a beginner also. Had a Epiphone Les Paul Standard, but due to money issues I was forced to sell and downgrade basically. Loved the LP overall, only complaint was that it was very heavy! So...I know coming from the LP, that any $100 guitar will feel cheap by comparison. But at my skill level for the time being...I simply need a guitar that plays!

Can I just say again... fuck me for not getting that Damien from Amazon when it was on sale... I can't talk myself into paying full price knowing what others got it for. I think I'm gonna end up with a Schecter Hellraiser unless something like the Damien or the Ibanez that was at Sam Ash shows up soon...

If it's only off by that little, you want to adjust your technique a bit. You might be pressing down too hard on the string causing it to bend to the next note. Try a lighter touch (just enough pressure to make the note ring out clearly) and make sure you position your finger as close as possible to the fret wire.

But if it's still off after that, you've got to check the intonation. You do it by turning the screws on the bottom of the bridge. Plenty of vids you can google. It's pretty easy to do

I added a notification for SD for the word guitar, also did it at FatWallet, just in case. I figure in the last 3 months, we had the Damien deal and the Ibanez deal, so I may end up with something.

I figure I'll check the "List" sale Memorial Day weekend at GC... I have picked up some good deals from those over the years... My American Highway 1 Strat was only $349 (the same that I paid for my standard Tele a year earlier). I think list was $1200 and it sold for $749, so 349 was a crazy deal... Picked up a nice Ovation A/E a couple of years back for $92 - it had a 299 price tag on it...
Worst case scenario, the guy at my local GC told me today that he'd cut me a deal on the Hellraiser when I wanted to buy it. I guess I'm used to the (relatively) stocky neck of my Fenders, but that neck on the Hellraiser was like butter. I was flying playing "I Hate Everything About You" and it sounded great because of how fast and easy that neck is to hold.

I wish I lived close enough to Cali to go to that damn Schecter "Yard Sale". I'd probably spend myself blind.

So here are some guitars that are a little above the "starting out" range that I have found on sale for some really good prices...

PRS Paul Allender model List of $1437, Sells at MF for $795... $499 and an add'l. $40 off on sale makes this guitar $459 at SamAsh.com. I can't stress what a CRAZY deal this is. It's an SE, so it's not made in the US like the $15,000 PRS guitars, but it is a huge bargain at this price... Push/pull coil tapping, EMG 89 and 81tw pickups (metal shredding pickups), ebony fretboard, bat inlays. Wow. I can't WAIT to get mine... Price is only for the purple burst - but it's a badass looking guitar. Here's a pic:

purple.jpg

Viper 300m LTD List $856, $599 at MF, Sam Ash is carrying this for $399. Nice deal on an all mahogany guitar. EMG 81/85 setup... Really good deal.

DV016_Jpg_Large_H78168.001_vintage_brown_stain.jpg

BC Rich Mockingbird Special X List $950, $599 at MF, Sam Ash has 2 colors for $399... Another nice deal on a shredding guitar. Gorgeous, too. Rockfield SWV pickups... Ebony fretboard.

DV016_Jpg_Large_584453.014.074_tobacco_sunburst_ebony.jpg

All 3 of these are great guitars for the price. Like I said, these are definitely a step up from the Vendettas and stuff, but if you're serious about continuing to play, it's always nice to step up your axe. A better quality axe feels VASTLY different from a beginner's axe. All you bastages who got the Damien probably aren't feeling the itch to upgrade yet, but my brand new PRS will make me feel pretty good about missing that deal ;)

Thanks, oddly enough though, I ended up going an entirely different route! Things fell into place in weird ways and I ended up getting a Martin Stinger! Not exactly a popular choice (since you cant really ever find any), but I gotta say, for a used guitar from the late 80's, this thing is rock solid!

Well I kind of have a preference for jackson guitars. I fell in love with a jaskson dinky at samash for 200 last summer. It just felt perfect in my hands. No idea what they cost now tho.

What's this LIST sale you speak of???

And I'll be hanging out at the Schecter warehouse, if I get my skills up. Actually need to get back into playing. My current event list is mostly songs I haven't played yet so decided to take a little break. Only I got sidetracked by some planning for a new business I'm looking to start-up. Can't stay a lazy bum forever;)(unfortunately:lol:)

Gonna take a different approach this time. Plan to go back to the beginning songs and memorize them. They're near full level anyway, so time to start mastering 'em
What's this LIST sale you speak of?
Every major holiday (almost), Guitar Center does a "list" sale. You actually pick up a photocopied list when you walk in the store that has hundreds or thousands of thing on sale in store. Most of the time, it's like the last one they have of something in store, or something the manufacturer has discontinued or something they ordered too many of - that type of thing. So what I do is go in right at open, flip to guitars and check the percent off column they have on the sheet. If the percent off is big enough, I take a look at the guitar. Then, if nothing is a huge percent off is something I might like, I look through the rest of the list.

Got that Ovation A/E (299 price tag on guitar, paid 92.xx) and my American Strat (1200+ list, paid 349) and other stuff (strings, picks, books, etc.) over the years.

Hopefully this will drop between now & 4/20. Paid for this guitar ( http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Les-Paul/Prophecy-Les-Paul-Custom-Plus-EX.aspx ) on Presidents day. It was originaly $800.00 Epiphone put this model among others on sale http://www.epiphone.com/News/Featur...Announces-Price-Reduction-on-Top-Sellers.aspx
So I ordered one in Midnight Ebony. The guy threw 15% off. Total before tax was $510 +tax was $554. Anyone have experience with this set up ?
