Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

Incredible deal on those bar stools. I rolled the dice and ordered two. I'll be absolutely floored if they ship.

Also, does anybody have any opinions on guitar wall hangers? I know Amazon has the String Swing ones for $8.30 each, and then they get more expensive from there. In anticipation of my daughter learning to walk, I'm thinking about hanging my collection (3 electrics, 3 acoustics, and a bass). But at $8 a pop, that's pretty pricey.

I saw these (http://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Hanger-Holder-Mount-Display/dp/B005CX4GLE/ref=pd_cp_MI_1), which surprisingly, have pretty solid reviews (and a lot of them). The shipping cost sucks, but you can get them on eBay for around the same price with free shipping...and in lots...which is appealing since I'm looking at hanging several guitars. Obviously, this is an area where you don't want to go too cheap though. But this also seems like something you could easily overspend on out of paranoia and fear. I just want something that is functional, won't damage the finish, and will last. The fact that people use them for Guitar Hero controllers is amusing...but I wouldn't be dicking around with drywall anchors and would be screwing them into studs anyway. Has anybody tried them?

Ok, I am seriously looking at getting rocksmith for the bass DLC. I just bought a bass a while ago and have been finding it hard to focus and practice. I keep thinking this may be just the thing to get me back into the groove. I have zero experience and was just using Tabs to play songs and that gets kinda boring looking at text files.

I keep seeing really poor reviews though and am worried.

I have a fender 50's reproduction p-bass ;) .

Where do you keep seeing "really poor reviews"? The game was pretty much universally praised, lol. I think the worst criticism I ever read was that it "was more of a learning tool than a game"...if you can even consider that a negative statement.

I have two of the String Swings up. Keep one guitar on it all the time. The other one gets used when I take a break and need a place to put the guitar. Basically hated using the floor guitar stand (also frees up space;)).

Only concern I see with the one you linked is that the hanger portion is too flat. I'd be worried about the guitar sliding off, unless you do some DIY mods. The string swings are angled upward

Can you be a bit more specific on your concerns? I know RS isn't perfect but realize most of the poor reviews came from people who were already guitarists and they took a bit of an elitist view on it. It's almost like they're upset people won't learn the way they learned

Best thing RS does is get the guitar, and very soon bass;), in your hands. You may not learn theory but you'll get good with the physical use of the instrument. And that should help tremendously.

And that's a reasonable concern too. When you look at the Amazon reviews though, it's pretty impressive how many 5 star reviews there are. I'll have to give it some more thought.

I know this is a deals thread and not really a talk about the game thread but.

I read the reviews saying that the lag can be really bad when using HDMI and that is what I have setup and not able to change it. They also said the learning curve is really poor and that you can't just pick your own settings and have to just let the game choose for you. There was a lot of other stuff, I realize this thread will be a bit biased towards the game however.

I was looking for something to help me learn from scratch so I am not an elitist and also not looking for a guitar hero game(I actually hated those games).

Is this a game that can be bought used(no online codes)?

You can buy it used. Just make sure you get a copy that includes the RealTone cable, otherwise you can't play.

As for the HDMI lag thing, it's hit or miss depending on how your TV/receiver/whatever else you use for sound processes the audio signals. I don't have any audio lag issues on a Sony KDL-v4100 (I think that's the model line...) using HDMI, though I recently picked up some sweet speakers that I have yet to configure with the game.

Ordered 2 bar stools though they aren't expected to ship until Nov 2nd. Here is hoping that the order doesn't get canceled :applause:. I also want to buy Rocksmith but I don't want to fork over 40 dollars + tax, I'm hoping it goes down to at least 35 or if any CAG is selling a used copy with the cable.

Seriously? By the time you factor in shipping from a CAG, you're almost at $40...

I have like 300+ hours in on Rocksmith. It's a hell of an investment, if you really want to learn guitar...

I might have missed it, but with the bass DLC, is it just 4-string? Reason being, I have a Washburn 5-string and would love to practice with all five. I'm willing to bet that it's just 4-string, though...

You can use a 5-string bass, but the game will only register 4 strings.

That's exactly what I figured. Damn....

Thanks!

It's amazing that this tread is still going strong. It is a great game I am a bit disappointed that there isn't going to be a song pack on disk this year. Haven't been playing as much since work doesn't leave me much fun time. Really suprising how you can get right back into where you left off. Even without playing much for months I can beat my old high scores easily.

Reading this thread has sure given me the itch to get a new guitar and now a bass. The Christmas sales on insturments are going to be fun this year.

Didn't realize how great of a deal those bar stools are until I saw regular pricing for similar items at Target today...do the MF/M123/WWBW sites charge right away for pre-ordering items like that?

Is this a game that can be bought used(no online codes)?
Run your audio out separately and you'll be fine. It's the audio lag that's the killer, and it goes away when you run it out with optical.

There's no real shortcut to learning to play guitar - you're going to have to put in the work. This game will give you some great motivation to keep at it. You also have the luxury of YouTube and other places on the internet to give you some free instruction.
Do we know if there will be new songs packed into the bass add-on?
Nope. Next DLC is the next week (the 21st). The guess is that, since it was delayed from last week because of the patch, one of the songs is Avenged Sevenfold "Nightmare". We don't have any idea what the other two songs will be.

Two days to go\\:D/

Few deals over at Hello Music:
Epi Les Paul standard for $349. About 50 buck savings
http://www.hellomusic.com/ec/DealMain.aspx?did=15248
Squier Classic Vibe 50's tele for $298. About 50 buck savings
http://www.hellomusic.com/ec/DealMain.aspx?did=14878
Schecter solo special for $315. About 180 savings
They also said the learning curve is really poor and that you can't just pick your own settings and have to just let the game choose for you.
I think the learning curve/settings complaint is referring to the Dynamic Difficulty.

The game is always watching how well you play so it'll increase the difficulty(give you more notes to play) as you do well. Screw up and it won't increase. do real bad and it'll lower the difficulty.

But you can't pick and set a fixed difficulty. The dynamic difficulty has its annoying moments for sure. Just don't think it's that big an issue. If you're good, you should have a song fully levelled up in 2-3 playthroughs of the song. Otherwise you gotta practice more. I know I do;)
Didn't realize how great of a deal those bar stools are until I saw regular pricing for similar items at Target today...do the MF/M123/WWBW sites charge right away for pre-ordering items like that?
Never had them charge until item gets shipped.

Came back from Target and saw that Rocksmith is on sale for $39.99 until 8/18. It was a weekly sale tag so probably valid nationwide. Website's been updated to only show the new, updated version. So you'll hafta go in-store

Plus there's another ESP available at Hello Music. This one's the te202 telecaster for $249. Guess they got a bunch of worn models all at once:lol:
http://www.hellomusic.com/ec/DealMain.aspx?did=15591

And the Super Secret Double YMMV deal is a First Act guitar for $5, available from Toys R Us. Saw the deal at SD. Might only be good at the OP's store in Ventura. You decide if it's worth your time

Just search guitar and the deal should pop up as the 3rd or 4th post

Kinda pissed I missed the fender string pack from J&R. I woulda liked the free baseball. Oh well, still got those boomers from BB. Thanks again to the CAG who posted that:applause:

I got one of the Target First Act ones from Goodwill for $7. Very basic, but well worth it just to mess around with when I don't feel like taking my good ones off the wall.

As I mentioned, I am not in a position to run audio out differently, I am using HDMI and not changing that.

Then it's a crap shoot whether it'll be playable or not.

Honestly, if learning to play guitar is a set choice between running HDMI or not, it probably is not something that you really want to do. Just sayin'.

Bass DLC Day is here!!!
xbox link: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/P...xpansion/714cbfbe-cb3c-4abf-ab35-1fecc80bb5d6
PS3: don't know. Can someone confirm when it goes live

Couple of points to note:
*there's a new patch (FREE) to download whether you do/don't want the bass expansion. Adds some new features and is suppose to fix bugs
*Bass DLC costs $29.99 (2400 ms points) to download
*Bass content can be played using your electric guitar; nice feature if you don't own a bass yet;). Game will compensate for the difference.
*There will be a new retail disc that will have all this content plus original content, but don't expect it to hit until Oct. 2012

Now, Music123 has a new weekly deal which includes a Laguna short-scale guitar and Marshall 2watt amp
http://www.music123.com/pages/123Deals
Laguna LE50 (black or blue) for $80
Marshall mg2fx for $70

I downloaded the update. At the beginning of the game, the screen is split into two - the left option is for electric guitar, the right for bass.

Aw aw, got a cancellation notice and refund for my bar stool order.

"Dear [customer],
Order [####]

It has come to our attention that on we had an unfortunate pricing error on the Fender 30” Barstool. This pricing error caused this item to appear on our website for $14.99. The regular low sale price on this stool is $89.99 and because of the severity of the price discrepancy, we had to cancel any quantities above one that were placed at the incorrect price. We wanted to personally apologize for the error and we will be placing a $20.00 in house credit on your account. Please give us a call to redeem this credit on your future order. We hope our valued customers will understand that there is a human element to our business and occasionally mistakes can happen.

Once again we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused"

Looks like anyone that just got one is still good, but man 2 for $30 was too good to pass up. Oh well, $20 credit, I'll take it.

Lol I forgot to order the barstool after asking about the preorder charging bit here...I could've used a 20 dollar credit...and apparently the limit one barstool per customer. Did that come from WWBW or one of the other stores?

Yeah, I got the same email. The weird thing is though, the email mentions canceling any QUANTITY over one...making it sound like they are going to reduce everybody's order to one. But what it looks like is that they're cancelling all ORDERS with a quantity over one because my entire order was cancelled. A little misleading, but I guess giving a $20 credit is decent. Of course, they want you to call in to use it so they can try talking you into spending way more than $20 though.

Crud. Got the same cancellation

Think I'll call tomorrow to confirm if they'll at least ship one. At least there's the 20credit.

Too bad the Tantrum case is back at 100. Wouldn't mind another. They've been doing stupid discounts all summer so hopefully it won't be a long wait
As I mentioned, I am not in a position to run audio out differently, I am using HDMI and not changing that.
I use HDMI, too. I also run my audio separate. They aren't mutually exclusive.

I guess I don't understand... unless you don't own a receiver, which is weird when you own a next-gen console.
As I mentioned, I am not in a position to run audio out differently, I am using HDMI and not changing that.
You can use HDMI with headphones if you want. You just need an audio adapter cable (Xbox 360 - not sure about PS3 but this website says you can use "your composite cables for PS3").

I use HDMI, the audio adapter cable and a 3.5mm female to RCA male adapter cable to plug my headphones into.

Hellomusic has a ESP ec-256p, this time in gold for $249
http://www.hellomusic.com/ec/DealMain.aspx?did=15603
Same as the black one I posted a little while back, so refer to that post for a review link. And for comparison, Amazon has the same model for $269 (only 1 left) http://www.amazon.com/LTD-EC-256-Ec...=UTF8&qid=1345139113&sr=8-16&keywords=esp+256

And something new from Hellomusic:
Dollar String Club - for a buck/month they'll ship a new set of electric guitar strings to your door.
http://www.hellomusic.com/dollarstringsclub/
You can also choose upgraded strings for a higher price

***** ***** *****

Can I just say Master Mode encores suck:bomb:. already missed out on a few Double encores because of it. Guess I'm gonna have commit them to memory if I want the last few secret songs

Interesting idea, except that I doubt their premium strings are along the lines of Elixirs or the such... And I've had pretty good luck finding good quality string for cheap (as the 20 or so extra sets in my guitar box will attest to).

Yeah... VERY difficult. I think, at this point, I've hit MM with 20 or 30 songs, so it gets damn near impossible to remember all the songs and arrangements JUST IN CASE a MM encore comes up.

If for some reason you're gonna do the string club thing you might as well upgrade because it's 4.95 shipping per month for the cheapo ones while the 7 dollar ones are free s/h, making the difference only a buck.

Hellomusic has a Schecter S1 in trans-amber for $450 (free shipping).
http://www.hellomusic.com/ec/DealMain.aspx?did=15613
and they tweaked the goldtop ESP deal by raising the price to $279 but giving free shipping

Now looking thru ZZounds, I found the same ESP telecaster from the other day for $210. It's a BLEMISH deal, but shouldn't matter much since the guitar already has a worn finish to it;)
http://www.zzounds.com/item--ESPTE202MN
Here are a couple other BLEMISH deals from them:
Squier Vintage modified strat for $240
http://www.zzounds.com/item--SQU0302800
Epiphone Firebird for $270
http://www.zzounds.com/item--EPIFBSTU

And had been stalking a Schecter Pete Dee thru Amazon, but someone posted it at SD last night and it was DOA by this morning. Probably for the best; I really shouldn't be looking at anything new

I had been making a conscious effort to avoid MM'ing songs, save for a couple early MM songs (stuff like Angela). But there's times where I get in a groove and before I know it I'm sitting on something like 8 or 9 MM songs:roll:. Go from being happy with my performance to being ticked that I triggered MM status

UBI really should increase the MM qualifier level or let us choose to play the normal version. Sometimes I just wanna zone out, you know

Wow missed that part. I figured they would charge a buck or two for shipping. Five is a deal killer.
Used my $20 WW&BW credit to get this just to tinker around with.

Can anyone give advice on a good strap lock? I was looking at shaller they say the screws are a bit small.

Also is there a good brand for bass guitars? I got the damien special from amazon so I am set there. At least I think I am why is it people buy multiple guitars anyways?

These are pretty much the standard.

http://www.amazon.com/Dunlop-Design...=1345326428&sr=8-1&keywords=guitar+strap+lock

For bass guitars, I've always liked Ibanez (honestly, most Ibanez products are pretty solid). The Fender Precision Bass has always been an old favorite as well. If you're looking to get into it with a modest investment, you can look at the Squiers (Fender's entry level brand).

As for why people get multiple guitars, functionally, it's because different guitars give different sounds depending on what kind of wood they're made from, shape of body, type of pickups, etc. Another reason is songs are written in all kinds of crazy tunings. And rather than spending 20-30 minutes tuning and retuning your guitar (and wearing out your strings faster), it's easier to just have another guitar.

Now, realistically speaking, people have multiple guitars because they look awesome and collecting them becomes addictive incredibly fast.

This X 100...

I use Dunlop strap locks on all my guitars. Makes it easier to just switch straps, too... Other than the ESP that I bought, which has the strap button on the back of the axe - which means that strap is flipped around at the neck end...

I can see how it would be fun to get another one. Got a dean xmt off of amazon but fortunately in this case it was missing a part. So I sent it back and later found it would be a two month wait. So I ended up getting the damien. It was such a massive improvement over the dean it made me want to find out how much better it could be. Fortunately I know next to nothing about guitars. So I really had no idea what another guitar I should get would be. Don't know anyone into guitars either so other than reading this thread I have no idea what a good deal would be.
If you want strap locks get this:

http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Waves-...TF8&qid=1345347244&sr=8-5&keywords=strap+lock

The lock is built right on the strap and hasn't failed me yet. Requires no effort to "install."
Bad advice. Not sure how long you've used yours, but the plastic that grips the button will eventually wear out and break (not only is there an Amazon review that says this, but I've seen it happen personally). This thing is the same price as the strap locks anyway. So, you could pair the Dunlop strap locks with a $2 strap and have a much more secure guitar for $2 more.

This. Go with real strap locks. They'll be much more secure. It's 2 screws, for heaven's sakes.

Interestingly I found that the Ubisoft digital download store is selling preorders of the PC version with bass module for 49.99, saying no cable is included. Not a bad option if anyone was looking into switching platforms and not wanting to pay for an extra cable.

I have had mine for quite a few months now and it has worked perfectly. I am sure there are faulty straps out there (as there are with all items you can purchase).

The main benefit I have received from this is that with one of these straps I can use it for all my guitars, instead of having to buy straps and strap locks separately. Saves a lot of time and money. It hasn't failed me yet, so everything has worked out.

Edit: I have also see strap locks (probably the result of age or user error) so no method is fool proof.

A few months...switching from guitar to guitar...which is what will wear out that plastic. If you were just leaving it on one guitar all the time, maybe you'd get a little longer life out of it. But I'm telling you, man. It will break eventually. That kind of thin plastic just isn't made to pop on and pop off like that. If you can post in a year that the strap is still working great, then maybe you're doing all right (though really, a strap + strap locks should last way more than a year).

But I agree completely that strap locks for multiple guitars can be pricey, but I would probably rather just use a regular strap with no locks at all (which you could at least keep an eye on yourself) than use the plastic "gripper" strap that could break at any moment and leave you trying to catch your guitar as it plummets toward the ground. Everybody's gotta do their own thing though. If I hadn't had one break on me in the middle of playing, I'd probably think they were a good idea too.
