safe to buy used games?

CAGiversary!
ive always been in the mindset that i love buying new. i can usually get what i want new and just enjoy opening up the case for the first time and know where its been and its actually clean with a clean past. but with recently buying a ps3 and already having a pc and 360, i know games are gonna get expensive for future purchases i look into. how do you guys get yourself to actually buy used games and not get that feeling of not knowing its past and be ok with it.

its a stupid thought i know. i really want to get myself thinking its ok to buy used as there are great games that are no longer being made and are used. how often are you buying used games over new.

Because it's a video game, not a chick you're about to hook up with. In this case being cheap and used is a good thing.

How do you shake someone’s hands not knowing where their hands have been? How do you eat food not knowing who has touched it or what has been done to it? How do you breathe in air knowing that everyone else is breathing in and out that same air? How do you use money not knowing who and how many people have touched it or where it has been?

You are really safe with the PS3 for used games anyhow. They are very scratch-resistant. Most PS3 owners are adults and keep the cases/manuals as well.

I never buy new unless I get a game day one or it's super cheap like Black Friday cheap. I usually buy from gohastings.com or Gamestop. Yes you can find cheaper than GS but at least I can see what I'm buying when I buy it. Plus if they don't have a case when they get one they'll let me trade in the generic case.

I love buying used and getting a good deal. Most places will guarantee the games to work and I've never had a problem buying used. Like you, I prefer to buy new and will do so with some games, but others that I'm just adding to my collection to have I prefer getting used as I'm a CAG!

Gamefly is where I get most my used stuff. The cases are always in like new condition as they don't get used with their monthly service and the discs have always worked fine and looked good for me also. I picked up several good titles, like Tiger 10 and Fight Night Round 4 for $15 each w free shipping.

I won't buy used online from Gamestop as the original manual or case is not guaranteed.

Take a look at Blockbuster too, I picked up Bioshock 2 for a friend for $20 and GTA IV for $15 and got to see that the cases and manuals were in perfect condition...once you remove those used stickers and the price tags and see your deals and steals sitting in your collection looking just like all the games you paid $60 for and working perfectly it's a feeling I have not only gotten used to, but love.

When buying used games it is important to know that Jews, Homosexuals, Hispanics or African Americans might have been the previous owners of the game. It is important to know the risks associated with purchasing the games. If you cannot confirm your used game came from a white, Christian home you may want to test the game for cracks, scratches, feces, semen, drug residue, AIDS, animal semen or other imperfections that may affect gameplay.

Gamestop guarantees their used games from scratches and cracks, but not from semen, feces or HIV. Be careful purchasing from there. If you go to the "white mall" and purchase used games from that Gamestop, you might be able guarantee that no minority has used your game and it was only used for wholesome worship of the Lord, Jesus Raptor Christ and recreational gameplay. Gamestops that exist in strip malls do not have any kind of restriction on who they trade with and you are more likely to get a "tainted" game from a heathen minority which might contaminate your new games that you paid $15-20 more for so you could be the one to open the seal and put your own feces and semen on.

There's a number of good arguments for buying used over new. For older Playstation games (take Breath of Fire 3 for example), you can find it at a yardsale for peanuts, buy it at market from a picky CAG / collector who had it in storage, or pay 5x to get it brand new. I could see paying more for a minty disc or a clean square manual, but I can't see paying a premium for a piece of plastic wrap.

Every once in a while I might buy new if the game is in the $20-30 range, for instance I didn't mind picking up Persona 3: FES and Valkyrie Profile when they first came out. Otherwise most of the stuff I buy from Gamestop is opened reprints, so nine times out of ten there aren't any condition issues to worry about. Though I can say I've seen at least one horror story--at one local GS they have the audacity to put out a Guitar Hero Metallica that looked like it had encrusted chocolate milk under the case plastic and covering half the front liner. I didn't say anything because it would probably amount to "Do you know how to run a business?" XD

After seeing some of the indeterminate matter on the manuals/cases from some used games from places like Gamestop I almost gave up buying used. But then I remembered that I'm a cheapass AND I have about 600 spare cases and possibly even have some artwork/manuals for the games I'm buying so I don't have to worry about dealing with someone's shit/cum stained garbage and I can just swap it out.

In all seriousness though, if I'm getting a good deal on games I don't care if I'm the first person to play/touch the game or the 90th, as long as the damn thing works as intended and if I get bored of it I can offload it to someone else for a decent amount.;)

As a CAG, that's ALL that should matter(getting a good deal). But I can understand if you're one of the OCD nitpicky collectors who have to have everything gem mint and smelling like plastic fumes from the factory still.

As someone else said, try Gamefly for used games, as the cases/artwork/manuals usually come in mint condition and if you're buying PS3 games chances are the games will too.

used porn, that i have a problem with.

used video games is no problem. its best if you can get a fresh case tho. having a stickered up case is annoying.

gamefly is shit for buying xbox games from. for the ps3, they are more scratch resistant so no problem

Honestly at this point, being a college student with no job, I feel like I might just start buying almost exclusively used. I've gotten so may cheap-ass recent games in the last few months used through Gohastings, Amazon Warehouse, Gamefly etc that it's starting to seem silly to even spend 40-50 bucks on a new game.

Seriously. Or just wait a couple months and pick it up new at a ridiculously low price, comparatively. It's gotten to the point where I only buy new releases for games I MUST play immediately. Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3 - I'll pay for those. But Black Ops? Hot Pursuit? Heck, half off MSRP during recent sales, why buy day of release?

Nice stereotype you got there.

I buy my games almost exclusively used. Oddly enough, the things you're concerned about are part of why I LIKE getting used games!

I enjoy pondering over what kind of treatment my game once had. For example, many years ago I went to Gamestop with my cousin (to avoid going to the gap with my other cousins). While I was browsing the PS1 games, I found Chrono Cross, Ergheiz, and Brave Fencer Musashi. All three games were utterly, completely pristine. Even the clerk commented that he'd rarely saw used games that look this good. So, yeah- I wonder about who traded those in. Who would keep their stuff that nice, then dump 'em at gamestop for a pittance? Were they stolen? Did he/she just not know any better, or were they desperate for the money? I also try to figure out if this game with the name on it in sharpie was a spoiled kid who couldn't share, or a good kid desperately trying to stop a sibling from taking his games. You get the idea.

I don't even mind the banged-up cases and the stickers, for the most part... once of the best parts of getting a new game for me is cleaning it up. Stickers come off, sharpie comes off, scratches get buffed out, cases get polished or replaced... it's great! Kinda make me feel like I'm restoring something, you know? (Not that I don't have my limits... I can't fix a torn cover or water-damaged manual, after all.)

So, in the end, I get to take a game most collectors wouldn't look at, make it display worthy, possibly get to share some stories about where it came from... and it didn't cost as much as a new copy. Sounds fucking good to me! One tip, though- try to buy your used games in person, at least at first- remember your 'good condition' may not match someone else's. Be careful.

I think it's time for you to spend some time looking for a deal on a sarcasm detector.
Leave it to luischav3z to get offended. Was it the thing about the Hispanics that got to you? Did I forget to mention burritos or something?
:applause: Some people just have a stick up their ass to overreact over anything that's considered 'omg non-PC', even if it's said in jest and with a heavy sprinkling of sarcasm.

I could give a shit if he's offended. He needs to get off the internet now before he reads something REALLY offensive to people with no sense of humor.
