Saturn DVD Case Artwork Project

I'm a trendsetter, what can I say? lol.

The Daytona one looks fantastic. Have you thought about changing the font on the front where it reads 'Championship...'? Something about it just looks off from the rest of it. Italicized, maybe?

Also, check your spelling of 'Edition.'

What I like about his Daytona cover is that he extended the front into the spine, and just added added a bright/blur/translucency effect to the spine area. I don't know why I never thought of that.

EDIT:

OK, finally got everything sorted out. It was mostly size issues. At 300dpi, regular DVD covers should be (3225 x 2156) in order to fit the case perfectly. And this is a brief idea of a finished product, for my import covers at least. (courtesy of 4tygame's printer and camera)
looks decent but im assuming the printer didnt print it in hi quality
And looks like regular paper. Just a test print. I'll get some more high quality pics once I order the cardstock inserts from Speed Racer.

I use Glossy Paper for inserts and they look fantastic. Buy.com sells A4 sized paper (For people whos printer doesnt print to the edge... like mine) and then use a paper cutter (A real one, not sissors) and you're all set.

Also, I'll add more tonight, fix the spelling error on the Daytona USA one, and upload the template somewhere. Thanks!

What also works is, if you have PS, to do the following things:

Tape two pieces of whatever letter paper you are using on the back side. When you print from PS, set your left margin (I think) to 2.44 or so. That will make it fit onto one sheet, then cut via a straight-edge cutter. It's worked for me, at least. I picked up a 100-ct pack of HP Everyday Photo Paper when it was ridiculously on sale at BB and have had good results thus far with that method. I wish my printer was of higher quality, but when I want the final results printed, I'm just going with Speed Racer anyways.

My only gripe with that is unless you have a $10,000 color laser printer, your colors are all gonna be washed out when you print. Print on glossy, and the colors really pop off the sheet. I'm telling you man, once you go glossy, you quickly realize its the only way to go.

I've been doing DVD cover for a hobby for 4-5 years now, I did the first Dreamcast DVD covers which started this cover making craze on CAG about 3 years ago. It's not a cheap hobby, if you want quality... I see alot of people thinking you can do this for free.... but be willing to spend a little dough to get it looking right.

You should invest in a decent printer, glossy paper and a REAL paper cutter to really make it worth your time. Let me tell you, in about a year, you'll realize what I'm talking about when you redo all your covers cause they look faded, and they've faded more as time has passed.

I'll post a few links below to get you started.

Any USB enabled scanner will do... you only need to scan at 300dpi, any more, and it'll look too grainy.

You can buy glossy paper just about anywhere, and I suggest putting thin-pak covers in "Clear" thin-pak cases, any other color and they seem to stand out too much... but thats my opinion. =)

Lol, I just realized who speed racer is... yeah... if he's got a $10,000 laser printer (Which it sounds like he does) then he's got what it takes to make these look awesome without all the home equipment. That is, if he's legit, and willing to lose his job making covers for people at his work making a side profit. I'm sure that it's not only against store policy to print copyrighted materials, but to print game covers for a finacial gain off the books as well. If he's willing to do that, for only $1.25 a cover... I say awesome...

Now, back to the subject...

Also guys, KNOW YOUR RESOURCES! =)

When I decide to get into a project I look on eBay for old art books (They can be used) and old gaming magazines (European ones for better fullsize pics).

I got that Daytona USA pic out of the European Offiical "Sega Saturn Magazine".

Dont rely on the interweb for good pics, If the picture isnt at least 200 dpi, you'll be sore when you print.

Also, realize that what you think looks good right now, may not look good later when you become more skilled... so remember this.

Garbage in = Garbage out.

To get awesome looking game covers, you've gotta find awesome looking pics.
Those look great. Too bad the only good games I have for the saturn are Fighting Vipers and Shining the holy ark.
Thank ye.
Man, is this thread dead? I may create a new one, and have this one locked... the guy who started it hasnt posted since 2005.
