XBlades held at $18. Dumped my last one there today to pay off MW2(Prestige). Getting that free via Uncle Best Buy is cool and all, but the CAGite in me keeps saying, "That's 3 new games! Why only one?" The Bigs 2 TIV is also $18. Got to finish that one off so it can go back too.

Well, this is appropriate since this is the Game Crazy thread... I just got off of the phone with my manager and I've got some bad news...

The Game Crazy that I work at is getting shut down. Apparently, so are about 200 of the around 550 Game Crazy stores as well. My store's last day of business will be October 27th. I don't know if there will be a list or whatever of stores closing down, but I do know that two of them in my city, including mine, will be. If there's a store close to you that will be closing down, they'll probably be liquidating and transferring all of their product. In addition, if you have any preorders at a store that's closing, make sure to get your money out of their system, because once they close, you'll probably lose your money. While this is bad news for most people (people that lost their jobs, people that like shopping with Game Crazy, people that at the very least like their deals), you might be able to snag some decent things from the store since they'll be trying to get rid of as much product as they can before they have to close and transfer it all away.
 
None of my GC in the whole city take in Space Chimps or Dark Spire. They all say that the app is wrong/they don't take it in anymore.

Lame. It's not worth the hassle. I wish I knew when it would update.

I just called my store, and they don't know if they are on the block yet, apparently the conf call was cancelled. Shit I have so much credit on the books at that store and I really feel bad asking them to transfer it to a gift card as I would hate my actions to hurt that store.

I really like the guys as well.

Just traded in 2 Di-Gata Defenders for 10/11 each.

Dark Spire rang up at 0 and the employee said they could not take. Tried to get them to do the price update, but it was your standard lazy gamecrazy employee that said they could not get updated prices. Will try tomorrow and see if there is a different employee working.

So I just got Rock Band Unplugged from the PSP bundle, and am looking for the best place to trade it. Amazon is offering $12 which probably wouldn't end up being accepted due to the fact that Rock Band came in a cardboard sleeve. So, to cut to the chase, anyone know the value it has a GC? Thanks!
 
The rumors are true - about 30% of GameCrazy stores are shutting down, roughly 250 or so. Sadly, mine is one of them as well. I've been offered a spot with the company, but I doubt I will stay. It's been a fun run, and I'm glad I was able to bring deals to you.

If you have any store credit built up, use it now.

Regarding preorders - if your local GameCrazy store is shutting down, you can pick up your preorder from the attached Hollywood Video.

Just got off the phone with my store and they hadn't heard anything. The guy mumbled something about 'that's actually a good possibility' and proceeded to check company e-mail, I assume. He didn't get the memo, so my store may be safe. . .for now. Either way, I'm pulling my credit first chance I get.

Can't say I'm completely surprised, since the first time I set foot in the store was to unload my X-Blades haul. I think the company was trying very hard to one-up GS and it instead put them in the red. I wouldn't be shocked if they went under completely by the end of next year TBH.

You'd probably have to call, but I think it might be. My store is in a district with a bunch of Houston and San Antonio stores and our district got cut in half. Then again, Houston is a bigger market than Corpus Christi, so your store might stay if it's making the money...
 
Yea, this sucks. I have 270 in store credit and want a PS3 slim. I went in to unload and they didn't have any in stock, all the had was the 399 Uncharted Bundle. I guess if worse comes to worse I will pick up a 360 Elite.

I'm really shocked about this. I figured it would be the dead-end b&m video rental business that was doomed. But there is a lot more competition in the used game business now. I guess when you have monsters like Amazon getting in the game, someone is going to get hurt.
 
Ours is closing as well, we start marking down on Saturday, our last day open will be on October 25th....this will be my 2nd lay off in a row and im not too happy about it especially I was going to get married this Wednesday. Horrible news.

They offered they would try and get me into Hollywood Video or Movie Gallery but all of them in my town are fully staffed, not to mention the rental business is slowly dying thanks to Netflix and Gamefly
 
My GC does not seem to have a clue what is going on. So that could either be a good or bad sign. The only bad thing is, if this GC closes down, then there will be no GCs around me within 50 miles. That would suck seeing how I still have a good amount of credit from those X-Blades trade ins.
 
So, have all stores been informed that they are closing already or will they be finding out throughout the week?

Scorch I'm sorry you're store is one of the ones affected. You were one of the good people Game Crazy had. I hope you can find something else before you totally burn that GC bridge, might be worth considering taking their offer until you can find something else, depending on stuff I'm sure I have no idea about.

@ mogamer since almost all Game Crazy's are attached to Hollywood Video's that would explain why they're shutting down as generally once GC shuts down the HV either shuts down at the same time, or within about a year (as what happened in Manchester, MO.)

Game Crazy's biggest problem has always been their customer service. Say what you will about Gamestop, but has anyone actually had to wait an hour for a GS employee to call their corporate office and update their computer system just so you can trade in a title? Everyone knows my history with my local GC, and almost everyone else who has gone there has a similar story.

While there are tons of bad GS's out there, there are still the good ones scattered about and unless you live in an area like southern Illinois, you'll find there are tons of GS's in your area and at least one that will treat you like a decent human being.

I have 28 GS locations within 25 miles of my zip code, with 4 of those less than a 5-minute drive from my apartment. Heck St. Louis/St. Charles County isn't just 1 district for Gamestop, it's 5 different districts with 5 different district managers!

As soon as I went into the Paducah, KY store with my cousin back in Feb. looking for Gamecube stuff and was told they were only buying new product to cover pre-orders unless it was a Halo-calibur title, I knew the writing was on the wall.

Hopefully Scorch and others affected by this won't get the treatment the Fenton, MO store got (corporate called them at 7 p.m. and said the store was being permanently shut down that night and all staff had to come in the next day to clean up and transfer merchandise or they would be denied unemployment.)
 
Will definitely be giving some of my business these last few weeks. Sad to see them go, especially since it's partly my fault (I work at GameStop).
 
I've got something lined up, I'll be fine. I may stay with the company after all, actually, but we'll see how the next few days play out..

Regarding closings.. they won't be as quick as the Fenton store, they're giving us about 3 weeks to prepare. Liquidations will begin sometime in the very near future.

These cuts are massive, btw. In a district of about 20 stores, only 5 remain, all fairly spaced out apart (30+ miles).. that's nuts
 
I have a bad feeling my GC will be closing. I went in to try to get a PS3 slim bu they were out. I asked if they were planning on getting any in and the employee said that if they did not get any in before Friday he doubted it.
 
Kind of ironic, but if your Game Crazy has a Tekken 6 countdown clock... it's pretty much the Doomsday clock for most stores... Terrible way of making the employees see exactly how much time they have left...
 
I wonder if mine is going to close. It is the only one in 50 miles. (Garfield, NJ). I still have 2 Ski-doos to unload and $64 in credit, which I was hoping to use it on Uncharted 2. Maybe I will try to trade my last 2 Ski-doos, have nearly $100 credit and get a Wii for $100.
 
Wow, that sucks, sorry Scorch and all other employees posting here. Thanks for all your help with posting deals, TIVs, etc. It sucks for you guys, obviously, it sucks for all of us who will have fewer options and less competition, and it really sucks that this is happening right as we get this thread rolling with lots of info. I traded and bought at Gamecrazy for the first time just this month, thanks to the info posted here. Thanks again and best of luck.
 
I gotta say i'm crushed by this. Sadly my store is one of them and I feel like we ran a "good store". I have poured my heart and soul into this company for three and a half years now. I realize some of you had "bad stores" but please keep your anti gamecrazy comments to a minimum. There are alot of good people losing jobs that they loved.

i agree. they are some really great ones and then there are the not so good ones.

if the great ones near me close, i'll miss them and more importantly the people. this sucks.

Wow... Looks like I missed some breaking news here. I need to check on the store that has about $100 of my credit tied up. I have bits left at several other stores (mostly under $1 though). There are a lot of GC stores around here so I'm sure many are closing but I'm hopeful my main store will stick around. They always made a big deal about having the best sales in the district so if that's true I'd imagine they'd be OK. One of the guys that works there came from the Gamerush store that closed down a few years back (the only one within 600 miles - it closed due to a bad lease/location). It would suck for him to be out yet again because of layoffs.

After having no HWV/GC credit left after the big $4.99 sale at HWV I pumped it back up to a few hundred from the trade-in deal they had a couple of weeks ago (coupled with the iPhone app to let me know what was worth trading there). I have no idea what to spend it on now since most of my new games from here on out are coming from Amazon and I don't need any systems. I guess I can always buy an extra DSi for the kids if I have to get something.

ch (and all others adversely impacted). Your input has always been solid and was always good for me because I am in your area. Any idea if the Hendersonville store survived? Always had good experiences there. My guess is the Inglewood store was cut, it always looks like a ghost town. Again, sorry to hear the news and good luck.
 
My Game Crazy had a couple of Rock Band/ Guitar Hero instruments and I was going to sell my old ones to Gamestop but they stopped taking them. Anyone know what the trade in value is for Rock Band 1 Strat, Rock Band Drums and a GH Aersomith guitar?
 
I know they don't take much for the Instruments anymore, I think it's $5 store credit. It's just that there are so many out there already it's not much of a demand or warrant for that matter for them.

Yes, but Scorch said that you can pick up Gamecrazy pre-orders from the attached Hollywood Video. That indicates that the video store portion will remain open. And if it's the video rental business that's losing money, why not close down more of those stores and open up stand alone GameCrazy's?

The chain really does need to enter the 21st century. They either didn't want to or couldn't afford to spend the money to update their POS system. Thus relying too much on the manager to do the right thing. The two stores near me rarely have the same promotion going on at the same time. And then the lack of online buying! Say what you want of GameStop, they run their promotions very professionally and use their website to it's fullest.

I didn't know you were in my area.. what are your local stores?
 
Sad to see some of your guys stores closing down, and I havn't had the best experience with them. I went in and saw the GTAIV special edition PS3 marked at 24.99 on the box. It rang up at 59.99 and they said they wouldn't sell it to me even though it was priced at that. Had to call coporate in the parking lot, and they called the manager. They sold it to me that day for 24.99. So I guess all in all the story turned out positive, and they did do a good job of taking care of me. Still sad to see some good people lose their jobs. I know not all the employees are the suck like the manager at the store I went to.

If worse comes to worse go apply at Gamestop.. God knows half of the staff in those stores from the ground up deserve to be replaced..

So, I called my local GC and the person and person had not heard that 40% of their stores were closing . . . but also said it would not hurt to call back tomorrow to check again. The suspense is killing me.

Really sorry to hear about this. Scorch, your input here at CAG in the GC department has been tremendous. I'm glad to hear you have things lined up, and I hope everyone else has an easy time finding new employment. God knows this economy doesn't need more unemployment.

I recently left the company last month(on excellent terms, just graduated college and got a "real" job, since that was just temporary for me. I loved working there, my store was great.
But sadly, I can see this being the beginning of the end for GC. Which is a shame, because it is a great place to shop. I found their trade in value's to be much better than Gamestop the majority of the time. There prices were usually cheaper. As said, it was customer service that I think did a lot of places in. Which really burns me, because I always tried to give people the best I could at my location.
 
My GC won't pick their phone up...I've tried three times since they opened. Guess I will have to stop by on the way home.
 
Sorry to hear about this Scorch & other GC employees posting in this thread. Thanks for all the valuable info you guys posted.

I infact prefer GC over GS for both buying new/used stuff as well as trading the stuff I had. They had best prices for both. The only suggestion I had was regarding them not utilizing their website to the fullest for inventory check or for selling games online. I even wrote a one page full of suggestions last month online to the Customer Relations e-mail address. Now Deal of the Day from GS mostly suck but it is more of a marketing thing to attract more users and traffic to their website. I really hope this is not the beginning of the END for GC and they make appropriate improvements with the Operating cost money that they will save from those 30% stores.

Good luck you guys in finding another Job. Game market has always been hot, hopefully you will find a job at game department in sears, bestbuy, frys, or gamestop if not HWV

Please read this with a grain of salt. (meaning I don't know if he was telling the truth)
I heard this from the GC manager or asst manager. It is a GC inside a Hollywood Video in Garfield, NJ.

I asked him about the recent closings and he said that they are not closing.
He told that HWV is losing a lot of money and the GC's profits are support HWV.
He said that the Corp is restructuring more towards the used game industry then the rental industry.
He told me that the stores that would be closing are the ones that are losing money on rental and have a GC inside them.
And those stores would be re-opened as a bigger GC only store.
The reasonings:
Rentals are down.
Used Game industry is doing well.
The stores are leased on a 6 month or 1 year term.

Please don't get mad at me, I'm just passing on what I was told.
 
I'd be surprised if they closed down both and then re-opened a larger GC store. For one thing they'd end up with a really massive floor, and the lease cost would probably be too high for a used game store. The only HWV stores that I see doing good business are ones that don't have a Blockbuster any where nearby.
