So, from what that guy is saying, they're consolidating some HWVs and GCs to house a few large GCs? Might work for them as a company in the long run.

Still, it's unfortunate to see so many stores getting closed down.
 
Agreed. It doesn't make much sense in expanding their sales floor. Games take up so little space and the extra costs from expanding the store size would eat into whatever little profit they are probably making.

This is probably all as simple as closing stores that are generating losses.

Right, lots of small unoccupied storefronts in strip malls that work better for a video store. This is what they should have done during the last round of closings. Seems to me that they're just closing money-losers while hoping the rest survive, instead of having a plan to go to stand alone game stores.

I heard this from the GC manager or asst manager. It is a GC inside a Hollywood Video in Garfield, NJ.

Uhh, no. They wouldn't turn a Hollywood/GC into just a GC. If they GC goes, HW typically follows a year later. I 'built' several dozen of these GC stores when the chain launched and almost every single one of them are not gone. I bet they never even replace their 20 year old POS and the Oki-Data printers. The days of playing Xbox/GameCube for 8 hours straight since no customers came in are long gone. The days leaving Madden 64 out on the counter and hoping a kid steals it is gone. The days of using the remote control to turn off the demos and tell the kids they broke the system are gone. Sigh.

Back when EBGames was still Electronics Boutique, we used to do this ALLLLLLLL the time on weekends. fucking parents thought we were a daycare center and one bitch even got pissed at us because her child wasn't still in the store when she returned. Unbelievable.
 
Called all 17 stores in my area and 12 are closing and 1 was a prick and pretending to know nothing.

Also, they said they would no longer take trades in starting tomorrow and that a 30% liquidation sale would start this saturday. However, most new product no matter how old will be shipped out.

This fucking sucks.
 
Called back in today and my store is officially closing. Good news is everything will be 30% off this Saturday, so I should have no problems using up my credit.

GC/HWV stores will not shut down and reopen as a GC. The stores shutting down will be turned into a HWV only store, and standalone GC stores will open next year. Hopefully.

Out here, as MSUHitman said, we lost the store closest to us, and the store finder says we have four stores left. One I know is a standalone GC store, and two other ones are HWV/GC stores. The other one I'm not sure about, as it's nowhere close-by.

My guess is the store finder should be updated as stores close, right?

Do you know how these new stores will be placed? Will they be placed in completely new locations or will they be placed in locations where previous gamecrazy's have closed? Or is that still up in the air.

I really like the GC by me (people were not pushy, allowed multiple game trade ins) , and thankfully, it is staying open, but it is 20 minutes away and the route has $2 in tolls, so a GC closer to me would be great
 
This is kinda fucked up, If the money making side of HWV, MG and GC family is closing about 1/3 of the stores, then how much longer is HWV going to stick around? With redbox, I only rent there if I have a coupon. I hope the closest GC to me (which is 10 miles away) isn't closing.
 
Well, I went in to my local HWV and they had removed 75% of their games and all their new systems and accessories. Apparently just this morning they converted to a "Budget Gamezone" which means no new games over $19.99. I was able to trade a "Chase: Felix Meets Felicity" for $13.64 though (no MVP stacking as the girl there didn't know how to do it and I didn't want to wait for the manager to get $1+ more on it). So, it's odd that HWV stores keep the prices updated but GC stores are screwed up.

But I guess that doesn't matter too much any more. I need to see what GC stores are closing and see if they are having 30% off sales this weekend too. There has got to be scads of closures around here given how many GC stores there are.
 
Looks like the 3 nearest GC's to me are closing.

I was told this by an employee. I got my credit on a giftcard, and will probably use it for a PS3 slim, and go pick up EA Sports Active used, if it's 30% on Saturday. Was told their last day was the 28th of October.
 
I stopped at my local store (6 Mile in Livonia MI) and was told they are not on the closure list, so that's good. There aren't any other GC within a 20+ minute drive, so that probably helped them. It sounds like some of you have (had?) many stores right on top of each other, ala gamestop. I have at least 17 different GS I can easily get to on my way home from work without going more than a couple miles out of my way, but only one GC, along with one stand-alone HWV.

My local stores are closing - Levittown, PA. Sucks - peole at Bristol store were awesome (for the most part)

Insult to injury...I just finally signed up for MVP on Sunday - such is life...
 
all of my gc's within my district are closing. within 20 miles, there are about 10 stores closing and one left open.

and that one is most questionable one... i think they hate me there. they don't have the best service too.

I work at a GameCrazy, and can verify that the 10% MVP boost is for normal trade ins. Periodically on certain games you get 20% trade bump towards the purchase of a certain game. Most often we have the highest trade in price. But will price match trade-ins for MVP members. This price match will match the opponents price but will not usually add 10% to that as well. Under certain circumstances such as pre-ordering a game most employees will add the 10% because we value the pre-order.

Also, all pre-orders that were done at the stores that are closing, are being transferred to hollywood video to be picked up and sold there. I was just informed of the terrible closings of many local stores also today. Glad and lucky mine didn't.

At least these stores aren't closing in the middle of the night like the Fenton, MO one. They were shut down the Friday before ODST released, and they were having a big tournament and everything for it before the midnight launch.

2 years ago, their crowd was about 1/2 the size of Gamestop's crowd for Halo 3, but GC had a tournament and at Gamestop everyone just stood outside and waited (the Fenton GS is the smallest one in St. Louis and never gets funding for extra events at midnight launches.)

I still haven't found out what happened with all the people who had ODST and other games pre-ordered at the Fenton GC. The Gamestop manager was hoping they would come to him but their midnight event wasn't that crazy.

Also Scorch and others are correct, if the HWV portion of the store stays open, it will most likely close within a year. In Manchester, MO the GC there closed in 07 and in 2008 when all the non-GC HWV in St. Louis closed, that one went down with the rest.

I honestly don't know any more information other than what I'm giving. Everything's speculative at this point.

Movie companies aren't seeing great profit from redbox, so in the very near future, you're going to see a pretty lengthy delay on redbox getting new release titles.

I wouldn't preorder anything new. If you already have a preorder, you can pick it up at Hollywood Video. Hollywood Video will begin accepting preorders, but you MUST pay for the title in full.

My manager hasn't gotten any news regarding preorders. Is the Hollywood getting the stuff for sure? I guess I'll find out tomorrow, but I really hope they do. I wish I would have preordered my stupid Prestige Edition off of Amazon now.

Anyway, our store got a big list of stuff to transfer out of the store. Basically, we're mainly only keeping PS2, GameCube, and Xbox stuff and shipping the rest out. Our front door and gate are locked and the only way to get in is through Hollywood. It seems like we won't even make it October 27.

Picking up preorders at Hollywood is a definite thing. Contact your DM for more details.

Front gates are to remain locked and GC employees are no longer allowed store keys and alarm codes. This is due to fear of theft. It makes sense to me (obviously, as they just pissed off thousands of people), but it still sucks. GC will now operate as the same hours as Hollywood Video in terms of opening, but closing will remain regular time (ex. if your HWV doesn't open til noon on Sunday, GC won't open til noon).
 
Hey Scorch, they're not going to give me shit about canceling a pre-order, are they? The only reason I did was to help the guy out, since my store credit was just sitting anyways. I'm going to be mighty upset if they try to hold my credit ransom because they're closing down.

Wow. I was shocked when I came back a few years after I left and saw they had hand-held scanners. I remember doing all trade-ins by hand (searching for each game in the computer). Inventory was hand counting 10,000+ games in a night. We'd always grab beer and pizza and finish somewhere around 5-6am and then crash in the back room.

Dang just noticed that the 12 free rentals coupon actually have validity date and i have coupons from July, 2009 to June 2010.....I bought the console today so my July, August 2009 coupons already expired?!?!?! and September I have one day to use geezzzzz !!! Is this normal?

Yes, August 09 is expired. You have to wait until next year.

Inventory time is a blast. I'll forever remember going into work at 2am and getting finished around nine.. blaring Metallica and going out for breakfast.. sigh

I feel you man. Just found out today myself, that my store is also closing. Went into work to find the front gate locked, and then my manager dropped the news on me. It's been a tough day, and will be a very long 3 weeks. :cry::cry::cry:
 
From January to June the coupons have it written in bold saying during month Jan 09 or Jan 10 but from July to December the coupons say valid during the month of July 09 only or Aug 09 only..... :( Am I looking at the right line?
 
I suppose, but I didn't think they split like that. Makes sense though, we just got a new shipment of coupons. Sucks though, the new coupons are for game vault game rentals only, no new releases.

thanks for the replies scorch, i will call them tomorrow to see whats up with this....I don't want to drive 28miles round trip just for getting the coupons corrected :S

I also read Free Game Vault Game Rental on coupons so I can't rent any new games I take it from what you said above....whats the concept of Game Vault...... you don't have to answer this I can ask the guy on phone tomorrow unless you want to :)
 
Hollywood Video employees can answer questions about game vault, not GC employees. After it's been out for a while (a month? two? I don't know), it goes in the game vault. Who knows.
 
Guys - my last two sheets from GC were Game Vault only ones (haven't had a regular one in like 2 years) and I've never had a problem renting a new release game. I think I last did it just last month actually. I used September's coupon on a movie though (Monsters vs Aliens) since we are behind on game playing anyway :lol:. But I'll be out of coupons in a couple months unless I end up getting one from that GBA SP purchase ;).
