Man they really wanted that guy to stop talking, then his trailer was just as bad.
They really should have the orchestra play them off.
While the Academy Awards are crazy boring, the orchestra giving no shits and chasing people off the stage with ever-increasing in volume music always makes me smile.

Hellblade with the threesome (games for impact, best audio, and best performance)! Should've won best indie game too, considering Cuphead won best debut indie game. Oh well...

GotY time. Spoiler alert, probably gonna be Zelda. Then again, I was wrong last year.

That Edith Finch game winning Best Narrative over NieR: Automata and Wolfenstein II winning best Action Game over Nioh was a bunch of horseshit.

That being said this was still a decent show, just for the major announcements if nothing else.

I'll probably fakey Metro: Exodus because I'm a fan whore for the series (both the games and the books) and for all that Soviet Bleak shit.  Bring on the zGold!

Amusingly, in the Metro 2035 novel, all mentions of mutants, Dark Ones, etc are dropped with barely a word.  It's a weird dissonance, like if you made it through a couple books of a high fantasy series and the third book was just like "Oh, also dragons and magic and goblins aren't a thing any longer and this book will be about royal politics."  And it's not like "All the mutants died out over time" either.  As the title implies, the events of 2035 happen within two years of 2033 and 2034 (which has mutants and paranormal shit a-plenty).  It's as though Glukhovsky just got bored thinking of weird scary shit for the tunnels.

Anyway, I guess none of that really matters since Exodus is sticking with what works: Wandering tunnels, radioactive Moscow ruins and avoiding ugly things with lots of teeth.  The focus on Artyom being convinced that someone must be alive outside the Metro system holds true to Metro 2035 though.

WTF Overwatch has no business winning those 2 categories, as an Esport? LOL DOTA and CSGO are way bigger I would say Hearthstone is a bigger draw than overwatch. For Ongoing Game I thought either Warframe or Siege was going to win it.

I'm fairly certain the point of having videogame awards isn't to just read off the top played or top selling or top watched games lists, or any other objective, indisputable metric that you could read off of a chart. If you want that you could ... you know ... read a chart.

It's not? Is it about promoting overrated games like Overwatch that lul u hav to like it cuz every1 else dose? I'm not a Mtndewdbro who watches award shows and gets hyped over what other people think and what celebrity musician is in matchmaking.

I have no idea what they're about, nor did I suggest I knew, I've never watched one in my life. I would just assume it's a reasonably certain guess that they don't just read off the top selling games ... but I'm talking to someone with Richard Spencer as an avatar so I think that was my first mistake.

What exactly does the Cheapass Gamer moderation team feel having someone with a Richard Spencer avatar does for the inclusiveness of this forum? Or is this now a white supremacist gaming forum?

Video game award shows are 95% about the desperate desire to be taken seriously in the Arts & Entertainment community (well, maybe 50% that and 50% marketing).  They'd still have industry awards otherwise of course but it'd be more like the Powder Metallurgy Pioneer Awards for outstanding performance in the field of advancing metallurgy.  They exist and I'm sure metallurgists are rightfully proud to win them but no one is trying to make them a "thing".

Is there even a select game award we're supposed to care about?  Everyone knows what an Academy Award or an Emmy or a Grammy is.  You probably know what a Tony or Pulitzer is.  Shit, there's a better than average chance you know what a Clio or Hugo is awarded for.  No one gives a wet slap about the "Golden Joystick" or whatever crap outside of people actually working in the industry and people who really want video games to be regarded in the same sphere as cinema, television, literature, etc.

I think awards shows in general are stupid, especially for genres or "art" mediums on the fringe.  People in the rap world always lose their crap about the rap categories in the Grammys and why x, y, z not that popular rapper wasn't nominated when their not that popular album was "better" than whatever popular rappers were nominated and I'm thinking, that's essentially a popularity contest so what are people getting upset about?

Even the Oscars is sort of predictable in that the best picture award will usually go to whatever indie/different/art film that's been the most popular that year.

That said, keep giving me a chance for free games and I'll play whatever game awards show in the background while fucking around with the bros in Human Fall Flat.  We made sure that the humans had a good Christmas last night, although Syntax managed to derail the train and lose the engine.

I might have been the only one to watch it, but that show was really good.  More interesting reviles than E3 for me.

I think that Geoff Keighley (with help from others) has continued to improve the game awards.  Geoff as consistently stayed in the video game news which I have to give him some credit for the years he has been involved with the industry.    I remember watching him in TV before interviewing Reggie with Nintendo year after year.  I think it is good to have report with industry spokespeople such as Reggie.  I do not mind there being an awards night per se as it helps those working feel more like the entertainment industry.  Do I take it seriously - not really, but I have fun with hearing the music and if I get a sale or game from it - even better.  I think it was Geoff that was saying that video games are the combination of technology and entertainment, which I agree with to a point as you could also state that about Sci Fi movies and such.  Again, I think this years show was better; coinciding sales/promotions ie Ebay, Steam, plenty of streaming, music, plenty of cinematics, some information, but also just some fun.

I couldn't name who won anything last year and a month from now I won't remember anyone who won anything this year outside of maybe Zelda winning goty. The awards don't mean much to me, but then neither do the oscars or grammies or any of the other awards syntax made up.

That said in the 20 mins or so I watched last night it seemed it meant a lot to the people who won (cuphead and Edith finch people) so why not? From looking at the winners it seems like most games actually won on their own merits not based off their budgets or publishers (except overwatch as mentioned but blizzard gets a lot of love for pretty much anything they put out there).

No reason why not. Industry awards are common and there's no reason not to have them. I was speaking more about the forced push to try to make them a thing above and beyond for people in the industry.

One thing the Academy Awards, et al have going for them is that people know which are the more elite awards. I have no idea if a Golden Joystick is more or less prestigious than a, uh, Game Award? Is that what they're called? It sort of feels like the joke of every game winning "Game of the Year" from somewhere.

In other award news, the award winning SpoFoBros, recipients of the Syntax Error Silicon Cross For Distinguished Gaming (check your mailboxes), will be playing The Division tonight. In one or more squads depending on participation.

Your first mistake was commenting at all with that attitude. That's Richard Spencer just before he gets punched in the face, but thanks for the hyperbole and insinuations. You sound fun, I have a list for fun people.

While it's nice to recognize people for their work, there are just too many awards shows out there now, and it devalues the whole practice. There are too many accolades being tossed around to have any of them carry much weight, as far as credibility goes. And there's no guarantee that hosts aren't shilling for advertisers like Gamespot of yore.

What are you talking about? It's setup so everyone gets a reward and can feel good about themselves now days...

Division, as I understand it all the expansion are open to all... If true you all should give the Underground a try. It's like Rifts from Diablo III. No real story just a random area with bad guys to kill.

fuck reward shows... I know it's PS4 only (at least right now) but did anyone see the trailer for Death Stranding?

Craziest shit I've seen in awhile.

https://youtu.be/qPL_E-TEtL8

Sony Entertainment so PS4 only.

Tell me about your feelings. Is there something that offends you?

Blade is a Nazi.  A real Nazi.  Not one of those disaffected Millennials who are scared of brown people Nuevo-Nazis but an actual late 1930s member of the National Socialist Party who has been in hiding since the fall of Berlin and currently stays on a plantation in Argentina.  I used him sometimes for Nuuvem deals; he's a nice guy.

The day that this forum turns into NeoGAF, a heavily moderated and completely censored liberal cesspool of politically correctness, is the day I stop coming here completely. I love this forum for what it is: a place where people are permitted to express themselves. Racism, misogyny, and homophobia are not present here.

Sony Entertainment so PS4 only.
.....what the fuck did I just watch?

Death Stranding hasn't come out yet? It's Kojima, so the avant-garde style and weird cybernetic fixation is expected, but all that trailer told me is that the game is already GOTY for that niche of self-important 20-year-olds in turtlenecked cardigans with fake black-rimmed glasses. I can already hear them saying it's transcendent and that I just don't understand art.

Yes, I'm aware that much of the Alt Right movement online are people being "ironic", and deciding that they don't have to think about the effects of what they're doing because they're being "ironic brah, come on where are you from, NeoGaf?" I'm not sure the avatar sends the message you think it sends to everyone.

I've literally never given half a shit about any video game award but I would assume the "hosts" don't pick it, so I bothered going to the Video Game Awards website and, sure enough, like every other major industry award on the planet, the winners are selected by an anonymous polling of a panel of people working in the industry, in this case 51 games journalism outlets. Unless there is a massive scandal of games companies buying the anonymous ballots of these media outlets, I'd say that's a pretty good way of selecting awards. Even though I personally think many of the nominees and the winners are not ones that I would pick, I feel like as far as awards go this seems completely above board and something the games industry needs.

I assume most of the "awards" that you're thinking about are simply different games journalism outlets releasing their "game of the year" lists. Publishers have taken to slapping those on boxes to advertise their quality. I think therefore the problem you're pointing out of those accolades not meaning much is actually abated somewhat by having a more major award that more people in the industry are voting on.

For me I simply cannot comprehend when people complain "no, this game that I liked should have won the award". Literally the only value I can see in games award is when they draw my attention to games I might have otherwise overlooked or underestimated. Being surprised by a nomination or a win is, to me, the whole point of even looking at the list of nominees and winners, because it puts that game on my radar as something that could be worth looking into with a more open mind. "All these people universally love Overwatch? Hmm, maybe I should rethink my strange, unhinged and unjustified visceral hatred for that game and everyone who likes it and instead give it an open-minded chance."

Why though? It sucks. Maybe I'm just unhinged though.

Wait, let me guess...1 X 1 = 2 right?

Death Stranding looks weird, insane, and really good.

Too bad it's a PS4 exclusive though (at least for now).

Yes, the show's definitely gotten better since the old Spike TV VGA's.

Though, I'm fine w/ them say giving Zelda an award (such as GOTY) to them and then saying, "Hey, Zelda also won these other awards" - but please flash all of the other awards they won on the screen too, when you mention them. Have them hold on the screen for a few moments of something.

And I did not like when just like last year, he ratted off a few times a whole list of games that won some awards like one after another in. If they couldn't make it to the show or via satellite - that should've been mentioned as to why these people didn't really have their moment. Seriously, WTH?

Looks really good? They showed you nothing...no gameplay, just garbage overhyped Kojima bullshit. All the video showed was how hideo has become an even more incoherent and insanely terrible developer.

I'm just sad that Warframe even got a nomination. DE has been running that game into the ground hard for the past three or four years now, they release a tiny, highly derivative "open world" map, and suddenly they're supposed to be relevant again? Pfffft.

Witchfire looked pretty cool.

I pretty much jumped for joy when it said "But also from the guys behind Painkiller and Bulletstorm."

Oh, hell yes!!!!
