In case anyone else cares the pre-load for Mortal Kombat 11 is now live (it's a 60.2GB download).

QLOC is listed as one of the developers so I'm hoping this isn't going to be a broken mess of a launch like MKX was.
Pre-loaded and ready for action. The trailer looks promising.

Not sure what version(s) this affects.

But some of the MK11 modes are supposedly now always online:

https://gamerant.com/mortal-kombat-11-internet-gear-mode/

Towers of Time, Krypt Modes, and Gear Unlocks are now online-only.
Well, that's annoying. I shouldn't have any issues with this unless the netcode is complete garbage, but it sucks for people with lousy internet.

I wonder if they're doing the always-online thing w/ those mode specifically b/c of maybe...those could be the easiest to hit w/ MTX's?

Krypt, Towers, and Gear Stuff likely could be hit w/ that MTX stuff.

Finished up Grand Theft Auto V last night.

Took the "Deathwish" path/decision near the end. Took around 42 hours.

Anyways, the game was a blast. Might be the best GTA overall game in the franchise (loved the missions and there really isn't any insanely ultra-difficult and annoying missions like Vice City had w/ the "Remote Control" mission).

Michael reminded me a lot of Vercetti from VC; and Franklin reminds me a lot of CJ from San Andreas - but Trevor takes the cake as the insane character who seems to be there to cause crazy destruction & bat-crap crazy stuff like a GTA player might want to do.

GTA4 still might have the best story & characters (yeah, I loved Nico's story and character) - but that was not the best GTA game (it was realistic, which was fine - but it didn't always have a lot of crazy missions & fun the other GTA's had; and a lot of the fun stuff was in GTA4: EFLC package, especially w/ the fun-as-can-be & awesome GTA: Ballad of Gay Tony DLC).

GTA5 was out-standing.

Been spending an embarrassing amount of my time playing The Elder Scrolls: Blades.

I feel dirty.

So remember back in the day, Subsoap ran an "Infinity Bundle" that basically let you buy in for all their future game releases? Well, if you did that, you can claim a key for their latest release, Faerie Solitaire Harvest.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/348910/discussions/0/3398435622559445973/

Just contact their support and request a key.

I would search for a specific post here at CAG but since the forum software and search are utter garbage, eh.

Trying to decide if I want the Disgaea's again on a diff platform (steam) or even DS3... I figure they'll be backlogged.  Hell I haven't gotten around to AC:O (or the one they gave for free).

This thread needs some PC game deals and boy do I have some doozies:

Glorkian Warrior the Trials of Glork - GFKZ5-RDIDR-V92EC

PewDePie Legend of the Brofist - PA624-PIXVP-MZDW2

Gravity Wars - 0BJL6-Z2PZL-NDHK7

Deployment - ZA543-K8TVE-9Y4CL

Maybe you can enlighten an old man as to what an "MTX" is?

. . .

Maybe it's because I'm having a hard time getting engrossed in much of anything or maybe it's something else, but I just could not get into GTAV. I semi-fakey'd it a while ago for around $20-25, because it didn't seem like it was ever going to get much cheaper. The story seems to take a really long time to get anywhere (as bad as the Yakuza game), and none of the characters are particularly likeable. It reminds me of what I imagine watching "The Wire" must be like, except that watching TV is a far more passive experience than playing as a character in a game, and all of GTAV's protagonists that I met up to the point I quit trying have been unpleasant selfish assholes. I haven't erased it from my hard drive yet, but every time I load it and attempt to get into it again, it manages to push me away with mechanics that aren't very fun or story beats that aren't particularly entertaining. The second-to-last thing I did was help a crack whore tow a derelict vehicle to a parking lot. The last thing I did was get my car stuck on some scenery in the middle of a street race. Hm. And I'm old, but the music isn't that good either.

GTAV is probably the most overhyped game I've played.  The characters were boring and usually acted like total morons.  The plot was a string of "You go do crime... LOL you get nothing because you're stupid and everyone treats you like shit!" events and the open world was pretty but hollow.  I guess you could play golf if that's what you're looking for in a crime game. Open world crime was a small handful of gas stations, street muggings and stealing cars just so they could poof because why would a game called "Grand Theft Auto" let you keep the cars you swipe?  After the umpeenth time being told to heist something or steal cars and getting "hahaha nope you suck" as a reward and having to slog through the lame character stories, I gave up on it.  I won't say "This game sucks" because it sold a kajillion copies even before the online component blew up so I guess people like it but I can't imagine what they like about it.

Except Chakra Attack!  I could listen to that for hours.

You haven't even scratched the surface. Give it some time & at least open all 3 characters. Explore the map & all the side stuff to find the depth. The story is largely forgettable (plan & execute a job, then get screwed out of the payoff, rinse & repeat), but that is missing the point. The game world sandbox is what makes GTAV a gem. I wish they would have opened the casino at the track. Seems like a no brainer to me. If you can't find any music you like (I'm old too), try the talk radio station up north. Pretty funny stuff. If you want to try the online mode, do it with friends. Otherwise, it's a total shit show of prepubescent griefers. Regardless, there's potentially hundreds of hours of game in there to discover.

There were some enjoyable aspects of the open world, yes. And some aspects that were annoying at best.

The story is adequate for what it is, that is a framework to explore the lives, motivations, and interactions of the characters. And I like the characters. By that I mean these are horrible people, but I like the exploration of these horrible people. (I've never been one to put too much stock into a work of fiction needing a likeable character for me to empathize with.)

Micro-Transactions.

MK11 Review round-up over here - https://www.vg247.com/2019/04/22/mortal-kombat-11-reviews-scores-pc-ps4-xbox-one-switch/

Overall, most reviewers like the game, but dislike the "Live Services" and very grind-y nature of the game's progression system and its multiple currency systems.

Also, GameInformer has an article explaining what modes work Offline (Story & Klassic Arcade Ladder) and what are Online-Only Modes (Krypt, Towers of Times, Gear Unlocks).

EDIT:

GameInformer with details on the game's MTX system - https://www.gameinformer.com/2019/04/23/update-what-does-mortal-kombat-11s-monetization-look-like

The details regarding Mortal Kombat's monetization are trickling in. At the PSN and Xbox stores Time Krystal amounts have been posted:

  • 500 Time Krystals - $4.99
  • 1150 Time Krystals - $9.99
  • 2500 Time Krystals - $19.99
  • 5600 Time Krystals - $39.99
Furthermore, Shao Kahn is available for $5.99.

On Wikipedia, the source of all truth, Micro-transactions is way down the list at 7th position for what MTX might stand for. Number 1 is "Mr. T eXperience", so I'll just pretend that is what you mean rather than some obscure acronym definition.

I only knew MTX the car audio company.  MTX doesn't make much sense so whoever coined that term deserves to be locked up.  Have you ever heard a transaction referred to as a TX?

I'm fine with characters not being likeable people, and certainly not people I'd want to hang out with, but nothing about the GTAV cast made them interesting to me. If I'm going to be watching bad people, I assume they'll still impress with their talent or charisma or humor or something. I didn't get that out of this group of mooks who appeared to just be bumbling through the game, getting taken advantage of repeatedly and fucking up even minor tasks. That's not a question of disliking the characters for being "bad", that's just not wanting to watch incompetent people being incompetent (much less play as them). Franklin being the sort-of exception since they seemed to play it safe with him but his straightman role couldn't carry the game.

Franklin struck me as the protagonist (whatever his name was) of GTA: San Andreas if he had no backstory or friends who weren't complete jerks.

Open-world games.

Sure, but I've played better open world games so obviously GTAV could have been better.  Saints Row the Third was more entertaining and was more fun to steal cars and commit crime in, Mafia II had a better story, Just Cause was better for just cruising the world and getting into trouble, Watch Dogs was better for depicting a living world of people doing their own thing, etc.  "Open World" has its host of general stuff to expect but isn't the excuse for mediocrity in GTAV.

I'm not here to argue the turtle or one punch man in the face's take on GTA V because it's largely accurate.  I started it, played a few missions, wasn't really into the missions, and then promptly started my usual mayhem.

I haven't finished any GTA game.  Closest I came was GTA III, VC, and SA.  What generally happens is I try to finish the game and then get caught up in the open world and committing crimes and every time I boot up the game I get sidetracked with that.  I can say GTA V does that pretty well.  I start the game, start driving to a mission, run people over, get stars, run from the cops, rinse repeat.  Three hours later I've forgotten what I was supposed to be doing and I'm on top of a crane sniping pedestrians until the cops come and then sniping them until I get caught by the helicopter swat team.

So, I'd say it does the GTA stuff pretty well.  It's just a prettier version of it and I'm fine with that.

Naw it's getting bombed for MTX's too, which it should
Amen. I'm tired of games with MTX City & grind-fest galore just to sell us shortcuts and/or cheat codes.

BTW, SF5 on PC and PS4 is free for 12 more days and 17 hours weeks, if you don't own it yet. I wonder if it has gotten any better, over the last time it had a free weekend/trial.

Honestly, I believe that fighting game developers are the biggest offenders. They prey upon their hardcore fans, they cannibalize the value of their own IPs, they hardly ever sell complete or definitive versions of their fighting games, and it never feels like a good time to purchase them.

I really don't know why their fans stick up for them.  I guess bc in some of the games you can earn currency easily enough to unlock things if you play a lot.  But it's a big turnoff to casual players.

Look at all the people making fighting games.  It's not hard.  There are a ton of good ones.  They're obviously profitable.  I don't believe that they warrant the $100 price tag that other games occasionally do, either.
