Welcome to the Steam deals thread V12, where we talk about just about everything except what games are on sale.
Please wipe your feet on the way in...

Summer Sale PSA: If you're new to Steam sales, be sure to check out both Enhanced Steam and Spoony's Official Guide to Steam Sales before you ask a question and/or spend more money than you'd care to say.

Before you ask, if a game is already a featured deal (daily/flash/community) that's the lowest it will go this sale. Feel free to buy without the worry it will get a better discount later on.

thanks all for the feedback on Dredmore DLC and Prime World Defenders.... sounds like I can safely skip both.

Will still pick up One Way Heroics and Archon Classic.    I already picked up Shadowrun for 3 something.

I think I missed a sale on Steam Marines, which makes me sad.

And my #1 want, by far, was Desktop Dungeons... but it never hit a price point I can afford.  Sad panda.

Not  the biggest talker on here, but I'll share my damage.

Skyrim Legendary

Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning - Collection

Battleblock Theater

2 sets of Castle Crashers DLC

Can't Stop Laughing Bundle traded for - System Shock 2, Company of Heroes, COH: Opposing Fronts, & Knytt Underground (not the best of deals, but happy with it)

Long Live the Queen (flash sale) traded for KOTOR I

Baldur's Gate II Enhanced

Bit Trip Runner 2 Good Friends Character Pack

And lastly, picked up Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity, as I decided to not buy the HIB that week (a mistake)

Also I won 100% Orange Juice and Puzzler World 2 in giveaways. Freakin' sweet.

Just idling for cards now. Such good trade fodder/Steam wallet filler. I'd love to read more of what you guys got!

OH! And Aerena is kind of freakin' awesome. Have a spare gift copy...if it even gives you anything?

is FO:NV that good?

I got it like 2 years ago and played for 1hr.

Couldnt get into it...should I try again?
fuck yea it is. But if you didn't dig it in the first hour, you may not just like the type of games the Fallout series are now. If you liked F3, then I would give it a shot. I know a lot of people that loved F3 that didn't want to give FO:NV a fair shake. If they had, they would have found better dialogue trees, better mission structure, better options, better world and some decisions that could impact your game world a bit more. I loved F3 and there are things I do prefer with it too, so I am not knocking one to praise another..I just used to having defend NV I guess.

Well, true to my word yesterday, I decided to give up on Assassin's Creed III.  In true CAG fashion, rather than play one of the (few) games I just bought during the sale, I decided to delve into the backlog a bit & Sleeping Dogs a try.  I played for about 5 hours before I even realized that much time had passed.  Honestly, the only reason I even noticed then was my gf came in from gardening & asked whether I was going to mow the grass like I said I would (I'm not).

Soooo - yeah, I like this a one lot more than AC3.  I was going to just jump to AC4 since everyone says it's much better, but decided I needed a palette cleanser after attempting the train-wreck that was AC3 (Maybe it does get 'better', as some reviews I've read have suggested, but I doubt I will find out).

In Sleeping Dogs, I actually felt like I was doing things within 20 minutes of starting & was having fun immediately.  Which is good, you know, for a video game.

So Monday at 10am the sale is over, so if I wanted to buy something I should do it right now then correct? Sucks Strider never went lower.
Yep. It's now or never. Well, until the game you want goes on sale again in a daily, weekend, bundle or winter sale.

fuck yea it is.
I don't think FO:NV - or many RPG's, for that matter - really get going in the first hour. Some really do take their time - whether get you engrossed in the story, characters, atmosphere; teaching you the game mechanics; or whatever the case might be.

The Witcher 1+2; FO:NV - yeah...those take more than one hour, before those really get going somewhere.

EDIT:

<Sleeping Dogs + AC3 talk>

Since I'm on the subject of games taking a bit to go somewhere - AC3 would be another of those. While I wasn't fond of Connor as a character; and I did find the game quite ridiculous and over-the-top for a story - I still really liked AC3.

While I think ACR had a much better story - eh, ACR wasn't that exciting to me, gameplay-wise. I prefer AC3, in that regard. For AC3 - I really dug some of the hunting stuff, tree-hopping, tree-climbing, and exploring the big open-areas; and of course loved the Boston location and Rev. War setting.

I'm probably in the minority here, since I liked AC3 over ACR - but yeah, to each their own...

EDIT 2:

Oh, Sleeping Dogs is awesome. That's for damn sure. I'd take that over ACR + AC3 any day.

I just bought something and got a Steam summer sale card 10.  I cannot sell cards for another few days, so does anyone need #10 for a badge?

True enough there. I knew within the first 15 minutes of all those games I would dig them, but I usually size up my games quickly. You're right though, I have seen a lot of people swing on them (sometimes in the opposite direction) after spending more time. I could play the FO series for hundreds of hours (and have) and continue to enjoy them without tiring out in the slightest. I know others get bored about half way through.

Damn, I was hoping that DMC would come back at 75% off but oh well. I'm not going to fakecag it at 50% off.

Nice hauls everyone.
It was 75% off, but the base price was still $50 for who knows why. I look forward to the next sale when it's 50% off with a base price of $30-40.

re: Witcher 1

The whole fort tutorial thing was tedious, but I thought the first chapter of The Witcher was good and really sold me on the game.

The second game OTOH just didn't do enough for me even a ways in. *shrug*

I really, really wanted to like AC3. It just felt like they were dangling that 'fun' carrot out too far ahead. Every time I thought I almost had it, they'd throw some other tutorial, or obstacle to fun in front of me. I was really interested in the setting and liked the idea of the main character a lot. It just seemed to fail in execution for me.

I played through all of AC2, Brotherhood & Revelations and the only complaint I had about those when I was done was "too much Italy". With AC3 - even after only 12 hours, my list of complaints was getting pretty long & I just had to re-evaluate why I was bothering.

I think when i first played I got to a town after the tutorial and ran out of ammo and didnt know what to do. This was a long time ago...when it was first released on xbox.

I think the other thing is - how a gamer feels about a game. Depending on the gamer and how they feel a game's going, something they love can be seen as repetitive in nature - yet, still they can't let go of it. There's got to be some carrot and stick. Just look at Diablo games - you just click, slaughter, loot like crazy, and level-up. Yet, that NEVER gets old - b/c it's so well done and well executed.

I think Fallout: NV did a MUCH better job at the character and decision-making, but it's narrative and characters were MUCH better than FO3 - that's certainly what most definitely kept me going there; and plus I already still loved the gameplay + combat (especially VATS) that it carried over from FO3. Fallout 3 for me never got old and I keep can playing it b/c I love exploring the destroyed open game-world, its characters, and making decisions - and it never felt like it ever went on too long for me, either.

Skyrim's a whole another beast entirely. It's just...TOO BIG for me take in for a complete run-through. I still ain't finished it. As much as I love that game - I can't stick w/ like I could w/ FO:NV, FO3, The Witcher games, and many other RPG's. But, when I get away from Skyrim for too long, I wind-up crawling back for whatever the hell my "fill" and run-through will be. It could be 5 hours; could be 10; maybe 20; even 30. But, after a while - I just need a damn break from it...and need to play something else for a good while. But, Skyrim keeps calling my name - and gets me eventually to come back to it for a while, after spending some time away from it.

Running out of ammo? I was tripping over stuff in FO:NV.

Wait...ummm - were you playing on HardCore Mode?

I don't think gamers should really start w/ that mode.

That to me sounds like something gamers should play on a "Replay."

I would guess he was playing it like a shooter instead of using VATS, or not scavenging enough perhaps. I played on hardcore and don't remember having any problems. Of course, I had played Fallout 3 previously so already knew what I was in for. VATS though saves you a ton of ammo that is otherwise wasted just by shooting at guys.

Ha, I am exactly the same in regards to those two games in particular. Except I haven't even put that much time into Skyrim, despite knowing I will really enjoy it when/if I do play it. But nothing has ever hooked me in the ES series like it has on the FO series.

Yea I'm a fallout noob
No problem there man, I get into new game/series all the time and have clue wtf I am doing. I am sure to people that are familiar, I play like an idiot. And with larger scale games, it can feel overwhelming. I definitely recommend going back to it, starting over and just get a feel for the world and the gameplay mechanics. Don't dabble much in the story, the side missions or even talking to anyone yet. Just spend a few hours exploring, killing the occasional random mob and looting. Then come back and start tearing shit up.

One of the other thing is - I literally played the living hell out of both Morrowind GOTY and Oblivion GOTY Deluxe.

Both of those - easily well over 100 hours each.

So, by the time Skyrim hit - while Skyrim has added a bunch of features, improvements, and things; its core still don't feel too much different than the other 2 games.

Never beat the game...complains about the price of more content.
Right - b/c game-owners get screwed on the pricing schemes.

When the price of Skyrim: Legendary is cheaper than gamer-owners just buying ONLY ALL DLC at once - there's a problem.

Game-owners get screwed, while new purchases get everything at a better price..

Buying ALL DLC (3 pieces) should cost less than buying Skyrim Legendary (4 pieces).

Really? No one besides Motoki changed their avatar? Is it time once again for my Super Avatar Bitzkrieg?

The most satisfying games from this sale were Transistor and double dipping with Bioshock Infinite. But also buying PvZ garden Warfare on Origin for retail was OH SO GOOD.

Who are these people coming out of the woodwork paying at or near full price and thinking they scored a deal. And they aren't even Solid Snake Eyes this time.

Oh yeah. Console people.

I'll admit that I actually DO find it sort of interesting to see what some of the regulars bought, just to see what might be good or if five people bought something to wonder why or whatever.  Obviously it helps if it's a short enough list to read through (and think they were selective) and not seventy bundle fodder games.
