Credit total sounds about right (I usually estimate 20-30 cents per game), but it only takes 1.5-2 hours of idling to get all the cards. Plus the quicker you get the cards the longer you have to get booster packs.

 
I really wish CoD4 would go on sale for $5.  I've been waiting for that for years.  I got MW2 for $5, but for some reason still haven't been able to pick up the first one.

I will agree that not every person who pirates a copy of a game would not have purchased that game had they not had an opportunity to get it for free. That said, one pirated copy of a game is not equal to one lost sale. The reality is somewhere in between, and I suspect it is closer to significantly fewer lost sales than pirated copies. I think for many, it is a +1 to their collection (who here doesn't understand that urge?) and for some minority, the full version is seen as an extended demo and does lead to a purchase.

Not trying to justify piracy in any way, but just saying that it certainly does not have the impact on sales that publishers make it out to be. It definitely sucks for them, but it is hard to determine the real impact.

You and I both know that there's no basis in fact to the number you gave. You're correct that often piracy is thrown out there as the foremost problem in lack of sales, when there are also other factors in play. But there's no evidence to support the idea that loads of people don't take free stuff that's just standing around.

Imagine a bank that kept their vault door wide open. Would anyone be surprised when cash goes missing? Do we blame the bank for keeping the doors open? Or do we say, "well, there are other factors at play here and there has to be a reason why people would just walk in and take something that isn't theirs"

I know good stuff can come from having product freely available, as you mentioned. But give the owner the choice to make it free. You can't excuse theft because the vehicle that allows it also does some good.

In general, we think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. For example, if a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable. Most DRM solutions diminish the value of the product by either directly restricting a customers use or by creating uncertainty.

Our goal is to create greater service value than pirates, and this has been successful enough for us that piracy is basically a non-issue for our company. For example, prior to entering the Russian market, we were told that Russia was a waste of time because everyone would pirate our products. Russia is now about to become our largest market in Europe.

So? It doesn't change the fact that it's easier than ever to buy games from Steam. It doesn't matter how difficult it is to play the game, because the service that Valve sells is the ability to buy and manage all your games in one place, not the ability to just plug and play any game you want (for that, buy a console).

That said, going to a lower price reeks of desperation, game's pretty much confirmed for the next HiB this upcoming Tuesday, imo.

Bah, I was telling someone that he needed to play Stalker and then noticed it doesn't even have a lame base discount for the sale.  So I assume there's no chance of it being a featured sale.   That series used to always be up for $5, figures that it wouldn't be this time around.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to drag you back into the discussion. Of course I can't prove the 90% statistic, any more than a guy from Ubisoft can prove his 90% statistic, and that was my point. But, I think one is about as accurate as the other.

I tried to demonstrate that I was a "victim", but also that being a victim of digital theft often isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I think that the world of digital products, and digital theft is completely different than "real world" theft, and I certainly, without question view people selling bootlegs and so on with much more concern and disdain than I do digital theft. If you want to talk about taking money out of people's pockets, selling a counterfeit item does exactly that.

I think that's a very accurate viewpoint. To go back to music, it always occurred to me that the physical offering needed to have more to entice the buyers. I did things like sell autographed copies, and sometimes I chuckled to myself, noting that I was selling them for nearly double the regular price. I think in some instances, the higher priced autographed variants outsold the regular ones I had.

If no one is buying your product, then I think it's up to the concerned party to figure out what they were doing wrong, not what the pirates were doing wrong.
