streaming device and ps3

I have a sony branded streaming device that i have not used in a long while. The reason is everytime i would turn it on it would turn on my ps3 as well is there any way to stop this as i would rather use the streaming device outside of using my ps3 .

Sounds like they're on the same frequency. 

But to make sure I'm getting the right info; this device is like a Roku player or a device that records gameplay?

Odd question... have you looked at your settings on your PS3 for media remotes? If it's turned on, turn it off and then try it again. Might be under Settings and Accessories. It's been awhile since I used a PS3, so pardon me on my wild guess there.
