I'm hosting a LAN party in a few weeks and would like to get some input on what might be a good game or two to focus on for it. I would have really liked to do Call of Duty 2 or Battlefield 2, but considering the hardware limitations of some participants, Battlefield 1942 might be a stretch at best. Here's what I'm looking for:

1 Inexpensive. If I have to buy multiple copies (for online play) I want the discs to be cheap

2 Hardware light. At least 2 computers will be laptops, and 2 are running Win 98.

3 FUN! I really like FPS games that have vehicles. Anything that contributes to occasional burst out laughing moments.

4 Easy to get into. I don't want complex RTS titles or slow paced RPG co-ops. FPS, Action, possibly arcade flight or driving games.

I guess that's about it. Please suggest older games if possible, like about Return to Castle Wolfenstein age. Thanks so much!

diablo 2 for sure... you could buy one game and use cdhacks for those if playing on a network, thats what the computer arcade here does. Also, for fps maybe quake 3 team arena? Id suggest quake 4 but thats a lot more hardware intensive. Warcraft 3 TFT? That was always classic whenever I went to the pc arcade, same thing with counterstrike. Hope some of those help ya out.... if not, I fuckin tried :) LOL

Here's something different. How about X-wing vs Tie Fighter.

You can get X-Wing Alliance for $15 at overstock.

XWing Alliance

There may be a slight learning curve with that though. And Xwing isn't a complex beast but there are some tricks, like how excelleration affects turning speeds and poower management between engine, lasers, and shields. Chafe, missles, Ions and Lasers. It's much easier than a flight sim though.

Starsiege: Tribes!
It can easily run on older machines, can have dozens of players per map, and has jet packs!
It might be free too, I'm not too sure, but you can for sure grab it for real cheap.

Lets see old mp FPSers:
CS 1.6
Quake 3 Arena (or any previous titles)
Serious Sam Series (besides 2, its too graphically enhanced)
Unreal Tournament (original?)

Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 multiplayer is kick ass but might be hard to set up.

All of those games should be under 10 bucks and you don't need more than one copy if you just using it for lan.

I'd say go with Unreal Tournament... I spent countless hours online with that game though I'm not sure if it'll run on laptops from the Windows 98 era.:whistle2:k

Wolfenstien Enemy Territory? It's free. Maybe to heavy on the sytem req's

Starsiege Tribes 1 and 2 are both free and old. I think 2 has vehicles.

I might look into the interest of Diablo 2 and Tie Fighter.
Tribes was one I thought of. It's free!?
The RtCW expansion sounds good. I forgot all about that one, having only played the single player.
Quake 3 is another good idea to look into.
One of the guys has UT 2003. Another possibility.
Soldier of Fortune 2? I don't know much about that one. I'll do some research.
Worms I think we'd do on a console if we did it.
Counterstrike is going to be a last resort. Some of the guys are really experienced with it, and some of us (like me) are pretty green with it. But it'll run on everything that can handle steam (another reason it's a last resort)

On a side note, I just tried Far Cry on one of the laptops. Ran pretty good with low detail on everything. Depending on the other machines, it sounds great to me. Picked it up at Target for under $10 and it looks like Ubisoft sells it for $9.99 directly.

Thanks for the advice!

Can't go wrong with the multitude of HL mods out there. They should all be easy to run and theres alot of good ones out there. I'd recommend "The Specialists"

But I second either Tribes games as well.

Well Tribes 1 has vehicles too, just not as many as 2. Base tribes has the scout, light transport and heavy transport. You can easily set up the Shifter Mod or something, which gives you points for teamplay, like repairing damaged equipment or setting up defenses, as well as headshot bonuses. The shifter mod also expands the basic 3 types of airplanes, giving them different classes...
interceptor = chaingun
scout = rockets
Bomber = lpc with..bombs
Godhammer HPC = HPC that shoots a fan of rockets

etc

The original Unreal Tournament. It's a classic and you can't go wrong with that.

If you have the specs, I also agree on Enemy Terrirtory. But again, it's heavy requirements to what you described.

Starcraft and Red Alert are good too.

Enemy Territory looks like a winner. I think that'll play on every system we're going to have and free is great. I haven't played around with it much, but are there vehichles of any kind? The intro video showed a tank, but I didn't see anything like it in the levels I tried. Other than gun turrets, I don't remember piloting anything in the single player RtCW game. Thanks.
