Surprisingly The Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck Pt. 2

Nearly done with The Fall on Netflix, great show so far. Almost done with season 2.

I also watched Rec 4 finally, alright. I skipped the third film because I heard it wasn't good, but I'll end up checking it out at a later point I'm sure as it doesn't really follow the same storyline as the first two and fourth film.

Arsenic and Old Lace:

Pretty damn funny. It drags a little in the last 20 mins, doesn't kill the film though.

Zorba the Greek:

Anthony Quinn did such a great job playing this character. The film embraces the message of living life to the fullest. Has a wonderful soundtrack.

After playing through a Resident Evil marathon I decided to watch all the movies for the first time. I heard they weren't good, so I didn't go in expecting much. Perhaps that helped me enjoy them for what they were. Non-canon as hell, and a chance to see the RE characters in live action.

I thought the fifth movie was pretty neat because of thought I had during the early fight with the Japan zombies. The first movie took things from RE1 and RE2, the second movie took things from RE3, and the fourth movie took things from RE4 and RE5. I wondered what what the fifth movie would do, and during that fight scene I thought "this looks like it's going to be Mercenaries mode". Watching the movie play out with that in mind made it quite enjoyable. It was Mercenaries mode. A series of fights against previously seen characters in set locations. There was even a timer.

The third movie was my least favorite. The desert setting was so bland. Also, Jill and Ada did exact cosplay. Claire couldn't at least put her hair in a ponytail for one scene?
GAH, those movies. Garbage. My kryptonite! I'll never be able to forgive Paul Anderson and Milla Jovovich for continuing those abominations for as long as they have. The more of them they make, the longer it will take to get a reboot that treats the series with even a smidgen of respect - and they have no reason to do that BECAUSE THESE KEEP MAKING MONEY. Anderson has a nasty habit of ripping some of the best moments from the games and letting his wife re-enact them on the screen. Having Jill utter the line "I'm good, but not THAT good" leaves a bitter taste in my mouth to this day.

What's sad is how good a lot of the casting is. Ali Larter as Claire? Loved her, particularly in Afterlife. Wentworth Miller as Chris Redfield? The version of the character he was forced to play was a waste, but he was a great choice. Oded Fehr as Carlos? Well done. And while Kevin Durand would have never come to my mind to play Barry Burton, that was a particular stroke of brilliance. Even Wesker was pretty good. Jill is the only one I can't stand, along with the way she was written - as a chain-smoking wannabe badass who is trying too hard to be cool.

And all of those characters were wasted. Claire and Chris just disappear, and I seem to recall Barry getting dispatched unceremoniously. Leon was suitable but was also just kind of there. Carlos at least got a decent send-off in 3, but... well. Couldn't leave well enough alone.

I try to give each of these movies a fair shake when they release. I eventually sit down and watch them, hoping for the best, but they squander every bit of potential. The first was genuinely good, save for the groan-inducing part where Jovovich backflips off a wall and kicks a Cerberus hound to death.

/rant. I get irrational about these movies. Resident Evil is my favorite game series of all time, despite some of the recent "hiccups."

Re-watched Inglorious Basterds today. Such a good movie! It's as if Tarantino makes movies I like watching over and over.

My latest two

When the Last Sword is Drawn I enjoyed it a lot, i've never seen it before but it had a really familiar feel to it.

The Twilight Samurai I've owned the DVD since 2010 and never watched it until now. What a mistake I made. Really great movie!

Awesome movies. They depressed the hell out of me. Great Asian films seem to be deathly allergic to happy endings. The only one I can think of is Eat Drink Man Woman and that was like 20 years ago...lulz.

First time seeing it in years, and it is still one of the best films about greed. The transformation of Bogart's character is amazing. It's a perfect film.

American Gangster

Russell Crowe's delivery SUCKS! This guy puts NO effort and emotion in his lines. Denzel is easily the superior charismatic actor when they sit down and talk. Also I thought the movie could have shaved 10 to 20 minutes off.

4/5

I got made to watch "The DUFF" recently - what a terrible film. I can somewhat tolerate chick flicks like this but I didn't find this funny at all or any good at all.

I just rented Taken 3 from Red Box - it was okay, but a far cry from Taken 1. Taken 1 was really good.

You know what I am looking forward to? Jurassic Park. I have a feeling it will be good.

Not an actual movie, but MatPat (of Game Theory) and Did You know Gaming? have created a new channel: Film Theory.

Mad Max: Fury Road

It was epic. All the action scenes had a point in moving the plot forward, and it's use of practical effects and stunt work was amazing. Then Immortan Joe,who is one of the best villains in recent years.

Really good film. I always check out Simon Pegg's films and this wasn't nearly as good as his better films, but it was still a fun movie.

Watched it this weekend, I think the most appropriate word would be 'mental'. Good film, not as mind blowing as many on the net have claimed but I would suggest to people to watch it in cinema's, pretty sure you won't find a film quite as bonkers as this for some time.

Big Hero 6. Ended up like Avengers. Liked it better to due aesthetics.

The short that came with it, Feast, was rather heartpounding. I thought that dog would die!

The Duff

The Duff. Yeach. Now I'm a fan of these coming of age generational defining movies. I loved Clueless and last year I watched Mean Girls at least 24 times. imo there are two main problems with The Duff. 1) The term Duff is stupid. Designated Ugly Fat Friend is more than just offensive for being offensive it's nearly nonsensical. In the trailer Wes (Robbie Amell) just calls the girl "Designated Ugly Fat Friend" and my first thought is "What teenage boy would do that so casually to her face keeping in mind that she is a) a teenage girl and b) not someone he hates?".
It would have made much more sense if the three kids drooling over her friends in the start of the movie called her the Duff and Wes explained the term to her
The problem is this isn't just bad editing. That's how it happens in the movie. Now the concept of the Duff is fine but the movie keeps pushing this term like it's something kids use and it feels forced which brings me to 2) The movie feels forced. Clueless was ages ago, Mean Girls was a while ago. Yeah sure maybe it's time for a new champion and The Duff really really really wants to be that champion. If it focused on making the other aspects of the movie actually work rather than pushing so hard to show you that it's so teenage no one over 16 can understand it then maybe it might have succeeded.

I did like Bianca (Mae Whitman) she was great (when she wasn't doing terrible things that served no purpose other than to delay advancing the plot). Every other girl in this movie looked so alike I couldn't tell them apart until I watched it a second time with my sister and I still had problems. The Duff could have been a contender. There's a good core story there, some great characters if they had reworked a few things like "Duff", some casting, and maybe put more work into the writing it could have been a fantastic movie. Shame.

The Kingsman err.. apparently it's actually titled Kingsmen: The Secret Service.. who knew.. or cares.

It's really hard for me to judge a Mark Millar film. As before I read the comic first and honestly just like with Wanted and his Superhero one it's pretty juvenile. That said I don't really have a problem with that. As far as I'm concerned Millar makes guy movies for "guys guys". As long as you know that going in I don't see a problem with that. It doesnt really aspire to be anything more than what it is. I just realized I'm not sure if I'm talking about the comic or the movie and it basically applies to both. As with all of the other adaptions. They take his comic booky story and try to make it a little bit more real. There's some nifty nods to the comic source and I'm not sure why Sam Jackson's character has a strong lisp and one of those idiotic looking baseball caps all the time but it's not that bad.

Unfinished Business

Surprisingly Better than The Internship. Yet while it was a better movie overall it was much less fun. All the interesting bits were off camera. Dude leaves his company to start a new company with an old guy and a young guy. You'd think the movie would be about how they learn to work together. Instead the movie takes place months later when they have to sign a deal and the whole movie is this one deal. In retrospect the not-hilariously slow Franco character barely makes sense because he's been this slow on the pick up for months and everyone keeps reacting like this is new. The Franco, that my sister inexplicably thinks is more attractive than his brother, had some funny moments but most of the time he was just a little slow it wasn't cute, or endearing, or dramatic. It was just awkward and confusing. The only problem I had with this movie was the trailers had me expecting a something closer to a gutbuster and this was barely more than a chuckler. Hey at least it wasn't The Break-up. If I ever find out who cut the trailer for The Break-up I expect to have a firm alibi when his leg gets broken.

This is one of the funniest scenes I've seen in any movie ever and it's not even close to indicative of the rest of the movie. At least when Spring Breakers lied using a trailer I ended up with a movie that I liked. It felt like the direction intentionally tried to get meatheads in the theatre and showed them something subversive.

If you want to basically feel even more ashamed when you watch porn, check out the documentary Hot Girls Wanted on Netflix

So, some info came out about the new Power Rangers movie.

Rita is a huntress with magical powers and the Putties are full-on golems made out of stone as opposed to clay. More importantly, Zord on is going to be the Red Ranger in the prologue scene.

Saw it, really interesting movie for sure. I heard horror stories about the porn industry before though. Glad to hear a lot of the women featured get out of the business.

I'm not going to watch Hot Girls Wanted immediately, but then again I don't really bother with porn. I do feel for those girls considering they are overworked and exploited for profit, like many people in this country, just with seemingly less "dignity."

Anyway, finally saw a bit of the Singing Detective starring Robert Downey Jr. Fine performance from him, but I do prefer that tv show better. Man, Mel Gibson was bald!

101 Dalmations

PSiESRM.jpg

I'm pretty sure I downloaded this for my nephew. He's eight years old and says he's never seen a Disney movie. Says he's never seen the Lion King or Beauty and the Beast or any of those. Without going into the specifics of my sister's household. Let me just say this is extremely unlikely. But I shan't talk more bad about a family member who isn't old enough to talk back yet.

This might be the first Disney movie I ever saw in theatres? Maybe? Maybe not? I don't remember my memory doesn't work that way. I DO remember that day though because we were late going to the movie and even as a kid I was upset at missing the previews and the literal start of the movie. But whatever I was a kid who cares what I thought then. We didn't miss anything important as I've since verified maybe two or three times. I enjoy 101 Dalmations. It's a fun movie, no singing which is a shame could have been some fun songs. There's a few jokes in there that I probably didn't get as a kid. Maybe one I'm 100% positive was beyond me. There's a few things I'm surprised at in retrospect. The animation is uneven at time. In some places it's pretty darn good in some places I have to assume they just were tired that day and slept in. I'm old enough to recognize recycled animation when I see it but it didn't detract as much as the characterization. The only puppies with any character are from the original 15 litter. There are 80 something other puppies and not one of them has a personality not a girl puppy or a streetwise puppy. Heck even the puppy that says "We were all bought and paid for" doesn't seem to have any other role beyond that.

Ok so we have yet another movie whose trailers lied to me. To be fair I wasn't following this movie heavily, and the only trailer I saw might have just been a teaser.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJY6fpoWYRw

The trailer I saw was apparently for a movie called 'Almost Home' they just dropped the Almost and kept the rest of the name. I can't tell if they reworked the plot or if this was intentionally just a prologue teaser. The teaser I saw was for a movie where the Boov were travelling around planet to planet to find home led by Steve Martin as a charismatic but idiotic and selfish leader. I knew there was a girl and boov at the centre of the plot but I would have muched rather seen the movie that would have been "Almost Home" than Home. That said it was a perfectly find children's movie. The Boov were as you expect adorable. Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez (as her mother) do ok jobs with their characters. I liked Tip even if I wasn't that sold on Rihanna. Jim Parsons does his Jim Parsons impression. I recently saw a banner ad in a random article that was titled "10 actors you didn't know where gay". He was the title picture. I even clicked the stupid ad to try to read it but it was on my phone. I couldn't get past the first person. The paragraph was basically that he's been gay this whole time and doesn't talk about it even though his character on the Big Bang Theory is straight. I think calling Sheldon straight is a bit much. Not that there aren't weird and eccentric straight guys who aren't interested in sex as much as they're interested in robots.  But assuming that CBS got that right and just messed up the idea of nerd and scientist badly is a bit of a stretch.

Tron (1982)

MINvV2i.png

Finally after four tries I've seen and finished Tron. Good lord that movie is hard to follow. The plot isn't TERRIBLY complicated though it could make more sense. The problem is because of the graphics it's hard to tell Flynn (the programmer in the machine) from Tron (the program in the machine programmed by the OTHER good guy outside the machine). Tron is a bit like the Wizard of Oz in that way. The scarcrow looks like her Uncle, the witch looks like her aunt etc. Only in Tron I couldn't tell who looks like who. But that rather major aspect aside there's a fun computer CGI movie in there. I can see the elements that would become things like Reboot and even Beast Machines in places. The lightcycles were as good as I'd hoped they would be. Did Yori the female program kiss both Flynn and Tron? Shouldn't she have felt violated by one of those guys. There's a lot of production work that's pretty bad. People looking up and then the CGI shot is at a wayward angle that doesn't match. Overall though I liked it. Now I'm ready to see Tron Uprising or Tron Legacy whichever is the real sequel.

Monsters University. Pleasantly surprised, then again I haven't watched too many college movies like Animal House or Revenge of the Nerds. Worse part is the pouting of the main characters.

St. Vincent - Liked it a little more than I thought I would, because I don't like Melissa McCarthy. But it feels like a poor man's Gran Torino.

The Fly(1958 original):

Decent. Has a creepy foreboding atmosphere to it. I do think the David Cronenberg remake is a better film. Along with grossing you out,the transformation was creepier with it's slower progression, where here it just happens all at once.

The Dirty Dozen:

Such a classic. The pacing, characters, humor, and direction are all great.

Watched Kingsman last night.

Didn't know the source material. Great movie. Probably resides near the top of the list of movies that aren't super good, but will watch anytime I see it on (along with stuff like Resident Evil and Starship Troopers).

The lisp is distracting and pointless.

Everything was great fun, and highly enjoyable. Choreography was great.

The Three Musketeers(1973 version):

It is a lot of fun. The sword fight choreography is excellent, and it helps that a lot of these fights don't have music to get in the way of them. Has a good of sense of humor too, though they could've toned it down a bit.

Poltergeist - terrible. Insidious was a better remake than this 'official' one - hell even the family guy parody episode was more true to the spirit of the original film.

Minions - took the girls to this, was an enjoyable film, considering I thought I would hate it. Good soundtrack. Wan't keen on Sandy B but Jon Hamm did good with what he had. The stars are obviously the big , Kevin, Stuart and KING BOB.

Surprisingly Terminator Genisys.  It could be because I went in expecting to hate it after the last 2.  Right from the start I was happy with it and kept thinking one thing that depending on how this ends I can count this as cannon.  Judgement day was the same as in the first 2 films,
at least till Kyle went back in time then into the future to 2017 and this I can live with
.  Other than Skynet changing John Connor into a Terminator I was happy with it.  It ended leaving me with one question.  One that I don't know if it will even be answered because it's left open, but at the same time I feel that this may be the last one as I also felt closure.  I thought everyone did a great job playing their part. Even if I didn't think they fit the character, but by the end I didn't really care.  For once I have a Terminator film that I can appreciate that James Cameron  didn't make.

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door

First time watching, great stuff. I don't know the reason to why there wasn't much Bebop stuff produced, glad it was milked to hell but I would kill for another feature length movie.

I am also looking for suggestions, 80-90s anime feature, good action, cool characters and a not too distant future setting. Thanks!
