The General eBay Rant Thread

Looks like I was the victim of a scammer buying digital goods. Got a dispute notice from PayPal this morning requesting that I respond within 10 days, only when I try to use their useless site (and I mean useless because links to their 'FAQs' go to an outdated page that triggers "can't find what you're looking for" messages) I get a message saying "thanks for providing your proof". Only I've done nothing but click the dispute link. . .

Reported the buyer on eBay; not holding my breath because they're a newer account with two feedback total. Chargeback is still pending investigation but I've heard the stories here of always siding with the buyer. Since I didn't send anything in the mail (no physical code; I'd have written it on a piece of paper) I took the risk that they're honest, but granted the buyer name did sound fishy so more than likely it was a hacked paypal account because sweaty nerds can't resist clicking porn banners.

Wasn't a huge hit and I sold another one like it without a problem so not much I can do at this point. This was just my first run-in with this type of issue so pretty irritating.

Any advice going forward other than the obvious?

There is nothing you can really do with this. Probably a hacked paypal/ebay account.

The sending something in the mail is a big help, but lots of time it isn't worth the hassle because online codes are so cheap that spending 3 bucks to send it with delivery confirmation makes no sense.'

I've been lucky where I've not had someone try to scam me in a long time (knock on wood).

You could try cancelling/refunding suspicious looking purchases. The problem is then that you may get a negative feedback at some point from a legitimate buyer, but most scammers won't bother leaving negative feedback and if they do you should be able to get it removed once the account is closed and it is obvious it was a scammer account. This could be an option if it is a more expensive code.

I cancelled the purchase once on a very hot item two years ago because it was a brand new account and I was worried about being scammed. Person was angry, but didn't leave negative feedback. Turns out the person wasn't a scammer because I saw they bought it later on from someone else, but I didn't want to take a chance with a thousand dollars.

Another win for us sellers. I only won simply because no one could understand what the hell he was saying. The foreign reps couldn't even decode his messages

Edit: Here was another one of the messages, he sent 12 messages total but I won't torture anyone else by posting all of them. My head hurts from just attempting to decipher all of them

Yeah, I basically treated it like "until it happens. . ." and now it has, I'll be more mindful. Either way, I'm not out much if anything and it doesn't outweigh the hundreds I've made selling to legitimate customers. Now I know what to look for on something expensive, though.

Maybe someone can explain this to me, it happens often with vinyl, which is primarily what I'm on eBay for, but I'd guess it happens elsewhere too. A seller has a large quantity of items, but you're not actually buying all of them. It's something like "Pick two for $10", to give an example. I don't understand how people are listing stuff like this as if it's a bargain store and not an auction site. I though you were supposed to list what you are selling, not a list of items as if this was Craig's List or a garage sale.

It should be adequate to ship sandwiched between cardboard, but I don't know if that'd cause them to open it.

If you're only shipping small amounts of booklets that would fit in a bubble mailer, why not just use first class? It goes up to 16 oz and is cheaper than media mail up to a certain weight anyways.

If it's more than a lb, then it probably should be shipped in a box anyways?

I don't actually know how many booklets would be over a lb. I don't think my larger sets have instructions weighting a pound.

Yeah, sometimes the difference between media mail and first class are just a few pennies. If that is the case, best just ship it with first class since media mail can be opened and inspected.

Got a phony sob story message on ebay today:

Paraphrasing: "Hi, can you charge me XX.XX for this instead? My son recently lost a pet and his father passed away and it's been really tough on him. We have a lot of bills and need every penny just to be able to afford this. Let me know if you could do this for me. It would brighten his day. Thanks!"

My response:

Hi,

I'm sorry for that awful news. Unfortunately, I am trying to save money to save my sick and dying dog and this sale is going a long way to help with that. If you would be so kind as to purchase this item at the listed price, but also toss a few extra bucks my way via Paypal as a donation? As you well know, losing a pet is very difficult and you could very well help him out. Let me know if you can do this.

Thanks!

Got a shipping question and while it isn't ebay I know you guys here always have solid advice when it comes to this stuff.

I have to return ship something to a third party seller on Amazon whose store is in Japan. I have never dabbled with international shipping of any kind as a seller so I have no experience at all regarding the best way to do it. I can only get my refund if it gets back to them or I'm out $200 and have to pay return shipping even though they're the ones that sent me the wrong damn thing. What I want to know is who I should I go with to ship it back and if there is anything special I should do. There's also customs which is something I haven't dealt with before either. In particular since I only get my refund if they receive it I want to ensure whoever carries it does tracking as the tracking # I got when they sent it still says it's on its way so whoever they went with must have got things confused, I personally know my mail carrier and she always scans the tracking upon delivery so I'm guessing somewhere in transit it got messed up in that area. Anyway, is there any particular carrier that's reliable (and doesn't cost a lot) out of UPS, FedEx and the USPS or will any of them be efficient? I attempted to get some rates just now from USPS's site but naturally my account there is disabled for some reason.

How much does the item weigh? I ship regularly to Japan and have found USPS to be the most reliable for the price, but for 7 - 10 pound packages, they're still in the $70 range to ship priority international. In my experience, this method can be tracked to delivery with the customs number and requires someone to sign for the package.

Just to clarify, have they offered to pay for the return shipping?

Because if they haven't, they should have because it's their fault.

If they didn't, then honestly, I'd probably just file an A-Z claim, or at the very least contact Amazon first to ask them how to proceed, and provide them with the details of what happened.

Also curious, what did you buy that was $200 from Japan. @_@

It's a pound, maybe 2 pounds at best after stuffing the box and securing the item properly.

And Squarehard: I was trying to buy a new Bandai model that had just came out. It's going for over 300 everywhere but I went on Amazon Canada to see what I could find with the exchange rate being in our favor. Ended up finding one cheaper, cost me 196 with shipping. The third party seller profile said they had a store in Canada and Japan so I figured I was getting it sent from Canada. I usually don't involve myself with third party international sellers from Amazon for this very reason but I assumed I would be at least getting what I paid for. Usually when I buy anything overseas it's through an official retailer but like I said I assumed this would be coming from Canada.

I noticed eBay changed how the item description is displayed even on the desktop site. They put a random sentence from the description and then there is a button under that states "See full item description"

How many people are going to just see the one sentence and not click that button to read everything and then get an item that they think wasn't as described. Whenever I sell an item, especially something rare, I take time to mention any kind of damage, even if it is something most other sellers would not post in the description like a very light scratch in the plastic of the game case and now I hope it won't lead to more item not as described claims.

It shouldn't be too expensive to return ship then. Make sure you use the right customs form though, as there are two. The one you're after is for 4 pounds or less. I'm not sure that's trackable though. Probably best to confer with USPS.

Alright, thanks for the info. You know anything about filling out the item value in particular and how I should go about that? UPS and FedEx both had a value I had to input for customs before I could get a quote and assume USPS will be the same way. Wouldn't know for sure, like I said, it says my account was disabled despite the fact I never tried logging in with bad passwords or anything, haven't used it in years assume that's why.

Yes, you'll have to put in the item value. You can mark it gift - there may be a return option, but I've never used it. I would not recommend marking it as a gift, but if they're hit with an import tax the may refuse the package. The workers at USPS will be able to assist you with these details. I would write "Return Merchandise" on the box.

Looking back through the details of your situation, I'd recommend the route Squarehard suggested. File an A-Z claim on Amazon. They should be providing you a prepaid label for the return.

What I don't fully understand is if the tracking shows it wasn't delivered you can simply state it was never delivered. Yes it is a bit shady because you did get something, but in reality you didn't get what you purchased. Sure that may be literally impossible since you already stated it arrived but just something to think about in the future.

In terms of shipping things back to China....It's a pita, unless you pay through the nose for tracking by a private company who will follow it the whole way then. USPS does not offer and form of tracking to China if they have to hand it off to a different delivery company.

I had to ship a $115 item back to China due to it being defective. It cost me like $24 to ship it and it was never labeled as delivered so I didn't get my refund. I then sent something to Australia for a friend and something recently to the UK to an artist. Both were under $15 due to being under 8 ounces and tracking was up until the delivery step.

TLDR, returning shit to China is a PITA and not worth it if you think there may be an issue. In your case you were sent the wrong item and I would get to the highest levels of amazon support before shipping it back due to the issues I stated above.

It was Japan and yeah it occurred to me I could simply claim I never received it and get a refund from Amazon presto without going through a return headache but I was trying to be honest. And I could be wrong since I haven't done a whole lot of transactions from Asia but it wouldn't be the first one I got where the tracking was never updated once it came into the states for delivery. I asked the postmaster here if they still bothered to track things once they left the country and she said it varies and despite her record on being wrong I'm inclined to believe her on this one.

Not a rant but a question.

I've been buying stuff on eBay for the longest time, but whenever I try to sell something, google always reminds me of all the horror stories about sellers getting ripped off via Paypal's buyer's protection. 6 months coverage is just beyond stupid and puts sellers at a huge disadvantage here.

Can anyone recommend a good practice on how to protect yourself when selling on eBay? Also, I assume that trying to sell a big ticket item like an iPhone as a first time seller is a surefire way to attract scammers?

I always list details on that stuff in the condition box and add a line in item description referring buyers to read that. So that provides two chances for them to see more about any flaws in the items I list.

I can't speak about iPhone sales specifically, but scams are pretty rare in general. I probably have an issue with maybe half a percent of sales.

Another question but Amazon again...is there a reason they are shipping more and more stuff via the USPS? I'm Prime and don't really care as long as my shit gets to me within 2 days but lately every order has been done by UPS dropping it off at the post office the first day and USPS delivering it the next. It just kinda bothers me a bit as the tracking implies the shipments are actually being sent faster since they are getting to the local UPS depot the next day but instead of delivering it to me like they normally do when it gets to the local depot they just drive it to the post office for tomorrow's mail instead. I know I shouldn't be complaining since I'm still getting things on time in two days but curious why UPS doesn't just deliver it themselves.

Also, I'm not sure how valid this statement is as it came from my mother but I have my shit still sent to my parents and my mom claimed UPS did indeed go through one day but didn't deliver nothing. The tracking had it at the depot early  that morning like usual time it gets there for delivery day. I could understand why they wouldn't bother if it was the only house on that route that had something so they just dropped it at the PO instead of coming out (since technically the delivery is scheduled for the next day) there but she claims it did anyway for a neighbor so it's like if you know you're going to be through the area why not just take it with you instead of wasting a stop at the post office on the way? Does Amazon specifically tell UPS to reroute through USPS now or is UPS not giving a damn if the item comes early and just decides to send it the rest of the way through the post office?

I sold, received payment and then emailed a 12-month XBL digital code on ebay to a buyer. Within a couple hours of doing so, I received a message from ebay saying the listing was removed b/c unauthorized use of buyer or bidder account.  I also received a message from the buyer saying that his account was compromised and he was not going to redeem the code. To be safe, I redeemed the code on my Xbox and it worked.

My PayPal account is still showing a pending payment of the item to me. Do I need to refund the buyer or will ebay take care of it? Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Thanks for your help!

Anybody having trouble connecting to Paypal from eBay? Like when you get ready to Checkout and you click Paypal from the list of payment methods (Paypal, Paypal Credit, Credit Card) and when you click it, the page doesn't load. It goes to a new page and the green loading circle just keeps spinning without end. Finally, the page just times out. It's like this whether I allow the pop-up to open, or if my pop-up blocker forces the page to change to Paypal. It started a few days ago for me. Anybody got any advice?

That's a quality response. I'm not a big EBay seller, just a few dozen sales but I've still gotten a few of those messages. Maybe it isn't a good idea to buy an old Sega Saturn game if things aren't going so well for you? They seem to want you to cancel the auction and sell directly, so if they ask to do that I forward them to EBay for violating terms. Had the first guy try and argue with me that it was perfectly ok and he would show me how to do it, but I told him "Thanks, you can bid on the item and maybe get lucky!". Of course he never put in a bid (and the current bid at the time was less than what he offered).

Thanks for the advice, but it didn't work. The page that pops up when you click on Paypal will not load whatsoever for me, whether or not I am already logged in to Paypal. So it doesn't look like anyone else is having this problem. Only me. Great...

Never mind. Got it to work. It was my fault. Or rather it was the fault of my fucking stupid worthless bastard redirect blocker. Doesn't do shit to filter out the affiliate links in posts to stop the website from making money and doesn't do shit to fix a website that I use to read comics, but it apparently DOES break Paypal. fuck me.

Need some advice here from people. I ordered an item on E-Bay on Monday without looking at the seller's feedback (dumb I know, but it was for vinyl record mailers - didn't think anyone would try and scam me over cardboard boxes). It seems as if this seller has a lot of bad feedback for never delivering items, and of course he marked it shipped without a tracking number.

Today I get an e-mail that the listing is no longer available and it looks like the person is no longer a registered user. E-Bay says I can open a case if I don't receive the item, and I've got a pretty good feeling like I'm not going to receive the item. The estimated delivery date is October 23rd... so how long do I wait before I open a item not received case? I don't want to open it too quickly since there is a possibility of the item arriving but on the other hand I know it's 99% likely not going to arrive.

If Ebay has closed their account, you can almost bet nothing is being sent out from the seller. I usually open up a case as soon as I get that message from Ebay but I still have to wait like 10-20 days for the refund.

I would go ahead and open a case or contact CS, like the previous response. It will take some time to get your refund but once the seller/listing are gone, you're getting a refund.

Make sure that you pay attention to whether the refund eventually shows up. It can take weeks, but I once had to contact eBay a month after being told I'd get one. They processed it immediately.

Months ago I preordered something that was a SDCC exclusive. In June I believe and San Diego's Comic Con was at the end of July. Waited a month figuring the place was sorting through orders and they say they'll ship it soon. Being a guy that is patient and doesn't want to bother them I wait longer. It still doesn't show up in September so I try to remind myself to message one last time in September before filing a claim but I end up forgetting. Here we are in October now and the seller isn't even registered on the site (they still have a profile with feedback, they aren't deleted on there, can still  message them) anymore and the only options I have on the listing are contact seller.

Is there anything I can do now or just gotta eat the loss? I've had sellers (intentional or not) pull this on me before for preorders and still managed to get a refund once eBay saw there was no tracking history at all and that they never shipped anything even after the 3 month policy or whatever they have. But I'm not sure who to contact since the resolution center's Refund - Never received a item just refers me to my last current two orders this month.

Just to add to the existing responses: When a listing gets pulled and the seller is booted from eBay, I always open up a case immediately. The seller won't respond to the case, so you win by default. I've gotten my money back quite quickly the last couple of times this happened.

I just had a guy buy something from me and he has 0 feedback (which isn't immediately a red flag since we all start there as buyers) so I looked as his account. His account was created today and his username is literally a bunch of gibberish letters and numbers with a few periods intermixed with it. If this was something cheap, I'd just risk but this is $300 item and I'n already fighting Paypal for another transaction that is likely costing me so I'm not about to take a risk with this account. What should I do here? Can I simply refund the transaction and block the buyer or will I be at risk at getting in trouble with eBay over anything if I do that without warning. I'm sorry if this a legit person but I'm not selling this to someone who looks like a bot with the random letters and numbers and stuff and even if I have to risk getting a strike and/or negative feedback (if it by some chance is a real person) I'm not shipping it to them. I've never experienced this issue before as my refunds have been done after the item was shipped but this is something I still have control over as I have not shipped the item. I'm reading old FAQs of people saying the buyer and seller both have to agree to cancel the sale but from all the posts I've seen on here about fraudulent buyers and other places I've read things I have a hard time believing that. Regardless, I'm not selling this item to them even if I have to go to Paypal and request a refund to them that way.

EDIT: I found this on their help about canceling:

You've sold this item.

If the item is lost, broken or out of stock, or the buyer requests a cancelation, select Cancel order below and issue a refund.

If the buyer paid using PayPal, their refund will be issued automatically. Once they receive their refund we consider the cancelation complete. If they didn't use PayPal, please issue their refund manually within 10 days. The buyer will need to confirm that they've received their refund in order to complete the cancelation.

Orders can be canceled up to 30 days after the item is sold. Once the refund is successful and the cancelation is complete, you'll receive a final value fee credit.
So I can just say the item is no longer in stock and the refund them with Paypal and that's it? I'm asking because it says the buyer has to confirm they received the refund but I'm assuming they are just referring to the manual non-Paypal refund. Asking for clarification as I do not want to be burned. I'm sure they just mean manual since eBay will know if they received it or not with Paypal but want to be absolutely sure.

I think you should sell it to him.

I just had a guy buy something from me and he has 0 feedback (which isn't immediately a red flag since we all start there as buyers) so I looked as his account. His account was created today and his username is literally a bunch of gibberish letters and numbers with a few periods intermixed with it.
I had someone just like this buy something from me. Two someones. The price was lower than what you sold, but they both created brand new accounts to buy from me. And FYI, all new accounts have gibberish usernames. You don't get to pick a new username when you first make your account anymore. You have to manually change it later on. This is Christmastime, new people are probably looking to eBay so they can skip lines at the mall or to find something they can't get at retail.

Had a lady purchase the case/booklet I had listed for Super Smash Bros Wii U, no disc included. She was the 4th person to "purchase" this and the first 3 cancelled before I shipped because "just noticed it didnt have the game". So my title mentions its case and booklet only, "NO DISC PLEASE READ". I mention that again in the description. I send her not 1 but 2 messages before I send it out just to make sure she understands.... no response. I sent it out........3 days later, "Uhm hi Id like to return this item, I misread and didnt know it didnt have the disc".

YOU HAD 4 fuckn WARNINGS! Then I had to send her an actual email because she apparently didnt know how to check Ebay messages and thought I was ignoring her! She gave me some sob story about how it was her brothers Xmas gift and she thought buying online she could get it for cheap and she thought it was unfair that I wasnt going to except a refund...yada yada yada. I eventually just told her to send it back and Id refund her.  I just cannot stand people who look at pictures and price and hit that Buy It Now button.........If Im buying something online I reread the description like 3 times and even ask questions.

You're too nice dude. I'd have said too bad.

I just canceled it anyway after figuring out how to. I'm sorry but if you don't want canceled don't pick some gibberish bot name. I can let 0 feedback slide but buying my shit with a phishing clone username not biting.

This has been pretty much the week of hell for selling for me. First time I've ever had a guy want a refund and his reasoning was the item had DUST on it. I know it was clean as I check over my shit beforehand but even if it did it wouldn't kill you to grab a fucking cloth and remove what bothered you. Another item I sent the PO claims I didn't select the right shipping (I've sold the same type of item for years and always used this and never had an issue) and sends me a letter saying they'll still ship it to the receiver but the receiver is getting the bill. Which just pisses me off as now I have to message the receiver and compensate them for the shipping they'll have to incur. I've heard of them doing this but have never seen the receiver get the bill usually it's the sender. Today I wake up to discover TWO packages sent back to me from the USPS for what I can only assume is wrong postage again. Wouldn't know for sure yet, not in the fucking mood to look at the letter. WTF is going on over there, I've sold for 9 years and have never had a return request much less the PO having hissy fits over postage. Is it because of the holidays? I'd think they'd be so swamped with packages they wouldn't even look twice at most stuff. The two packages just sent back to me were graphic novels so I'm going to love reading why they were rejected for media mail.

This is pissing me off. There's literally only been one seller offering this out of print DVD I'm looking for the past month (1995 remake of Piranha). The asshole has had the same garbage listing running for a month now, and refuses to offer anything but economy shipping. I sent them a message saying I'd buy it right now if they relist with real shipping options. I don't do fucking "Economy" bullshit. Nope. Stupid motherfuckers won't let me pay for better shipping, so the $43 listing is still there. Nobody buying it. Business 101, people. If you can make a sale by offering a better shipping option, which the customer pays for, what's the fucking problem?!?!?! I miss half.com already.

Do you need it in time for Christmas? I don't see what the issue is unless you need it fast. And if you've been eyeing it for some time I will assume time isn't an issue. I mean you said you are willing to pay for better shipping so that is stupid he's ignoring your request all the same as if someone said he'd pay for betters shipping I wouldn't deny them as I list all of my stuff for free shipping like a good eBay drone they want me to be.

Point is it's the 21st century. I despise economy and won't do it on principle, especially when they want paid for shit snail mail. I only pay for good shipping.

I got an email from ebay the other day because I used their suggested prepaid shipping label and it did not have enough postage to cover the actual cost of shipping. The thing is I knew it was not going to be enough so I stood in a long line at the post office to have them weigh it and add stamps to it. Then it was supposed to be a 2-day service and it took seven! Ebay was so gracious by allowing me one free pass (eye roll) and the next time, they will have to bill me the difference. This is a case where automation sucks because you know a barcode was scanned and the package was weighed and red flags went up...instead of a human looking at the package and saying, “Oh, they added postage to cover the deficit.”

I have no idea what the issue here is. They don't have suggested prepaid shipping labels, unless you're using flat rate. In which case, it didn't matter how much it weighed, unless you're shipping gold or lead bars.

And if you knew it was too heavy, then you could have weighed it yourself and put the weight into eBay's label maker and had the correct postage, and voided the wrong one.

So I can't figure out what the actual beef is.

The fact that postal people don't look at the shit they're dealing with.

I know for a damn fact I once had a package that had incorrect postage and if they had looked and saw that it was an eBay label they would have done the necessary protocol which would have resulted in ME getting the bill for the actual cost. Instead the ingrate at the sorting facility just forwarded it to the buyer then they had to incur the charge. The PO notified me of this ahead of them so thankfully I did a partial refund to the buyer so I didn't get hit with an angry message later but the entire ordeal could have been avoided had they done what they do any other time and that's bill the sender not the receiver. It's just morons not caring or looking at shit like they're supposed to.
