Is there a chance that this hard drive is just another laptop(netbook) hard drive in a different case?

The picture here: http://images.anandtech.com/galleries/707/_DSC4473_575px.jpg

Makes them look around the same size, the older 360 hard drives were just laptop disks in a big grey plastic case.
Yes, it's a standard laptop drive. In fact, you can slide a laptop drive in the slot and make the connection, but without the plastic shell the drive won't be very secure (and non-MS brand drives won't be recognized without hacking).
I know I can't find any matches on MW2 if I'm plugged into my router....if it's directly from wall (live in apt) to 360...it works fine. Just a thought.
Then you don't have your router set up properly. Try setting the :360: up in a DMZ.

Remember, when it comes to gaming, a wired connection is generally better than wireless, if you have the option. I've got an N router, and I still go wired for my :360: and :ps3:.

Anyone notice that their new Xbox is taking longer to boot up? For some reason when I start it up it just flashes on my controller for almost a minute before finally starting up. Also, I don't know why, but I have to put my volume a lot higher to get the same sound levels as I did with my old Xbox when my volume was set the same as it is when I am watching tv. Just some weird shit I noticed while messing around with it.

I'm plugged in got the internet from wall to router and then wired to ps3, 360 and pc.......it's the router and it's just too much trouble. Maybe one day I'll try to figure it out

Well, I took the plunge and bought a slim, despite buying a Jasper just a few months ago.

I'm glad I did. It is significantly quieter than either of my old consoles. The Jasper in particular was especially noisy for some reason (talking about the DVD drive). Of course, the fan is virtually silent. That part isn't so good though, because the console gets really hot in that front corner. I wouldn't mind if the fan spun a little faster.

The only fly in the ointment is a bum controller. The left analog stick drifts a bit; makes some games impossible to play. I'm hoping I can talk MS into sending me a new one.

I haven't even touched my new controller as I had a new wireless controller lying around so i'm using that for now. But the black headset that came with the 360 slim sucks, it already messed up on me. I can hear people talking, but when I talk no one can hear me.

Anyone else notice that there's a fan in the power brick again? As I recall, MS ditched that with the Jasper models. Makes me wonder if we'll be seeing a number of failed bricks in the future.

I am having the same exact problem with my pack in controller also.

I also have a drift to the left. Enough to be annoying, but not game breaking. I bought it at gamestop and I noticed thy they started getting them in store as extra controllers. I'm gonna ask em to switch it out for me.

Why is it that Micro$oft can't make an analog stick that works? This has been a problem since the first XBOX.

Well, apparently they can make one that works, since my new controller is working fine.

That, of course, is to say nothing of the perfectly fine five others I have.

But yeah, totally, Microsoft totally can't make a controller. Those bastards.

Mine already failed on me. Within 24 hours of me getting the console.

What's even more irritating? It's been two weeks and I still have not received my replacement power brick.

And even that more irritating? Microsoft claims that it is taking longer than normal to get replacement supplies. Therefore, when mine ships, I will be notified by Xbox support and given a tracking number for my "expedited" power supply they're sending me.

This is ridiculous. I have a review copy of Transformers sitting next to me, unopened. I can't do anything with it until Microsoft finally decides to send my replacement brick. Anything else I requested review copies for in the next week or so has to be changed to PS3 copies.

This is just a giant fucking headache. And I'm pissed off about it.

Why not just return it to the store? Try to get store credit and sell that off and buy the 360 slim @ best buy or elsewhere. Unfortunately for me, I called a little awhile ago to try and get a replacement for my 1 week old defective headset and was told I have to pay the shipping charges to ship back the defective headset that came with my 360 slim which sucks and I am not going to do. It's defective, I gotta pay to ship it back and then I gotta ship it first in order for them to ship me a replacement which is probably going to be a refurb and not something brand new in which I got. I am just going to try and get a replacement @ gs hopefully tomorrow. I don't see much point in the 90 day warranty with ms it's pointless in some ways like this.

Stupid question... if you have a transfer cable, can you transfer stuff
FROM the new 250 back to an old 120?

Curious, because if not, I really have no reason to keep the old one around.
I am having the same exact problem with my pack in controller also.
Call 'em up. They're sending me a new one.
I ment to ask this question here but has anyone, after powering down their new 360 slim taken out the hard drive after a few hours of use to see how hot the hard drive gets? This might be a concern considering how tight the case is and there is no vents for it.
The hdd shell does get quite warm, though it's impossible to tell if the heat's from the drive itself or its close proximity to the heatsink (I suspect the latter). I'm hoping that MS has learned from past mistakes and knew what they were doing, but...

My buddy just got a new slim and based on space he has to stand his upright. When I put my hand on the side (top if lying flat) it is HOT. Like, really hot.

No you cannot transfer to smaller hard drives.

I called about mine today and not very happy about the results. I have to send them my bum controller on my own dime and than wait for a replacement after they get my bad one. I tried to explain to the guy that the pack-in controller was the only current controller I had which it is. So I will have to try and pick an extra controller this week and than send the broken one in.

Wow that is shitty! They weren't willing to put a hold on your credit card so you could return your broken controller once you actually had a working controller?

Yea, I never played with my S controller either. In fact, when I traded in my launch system I traded the S controller so I could keep my red controller. It looks like I made the right decision.

I don't think so... At one time they said that you could only transfer data to a larger hard drive. However, when I transfered the data to the new 360 the transfer cable option made it seem as though you could transfer it back.

You might hook up the old hard drive and see if there's an option to move it back. I already traded both of my fat systems in.

Really? They sent me a new one without hassle (hasn't actually arrived yet, so we'll see). I asked if I would have to send back the broken one and he said he wasn't sure. Strange.

I always have crap luck with customer service issues, I always get the one guy who you dont want to deal with on the other end of the phone.

So now that it's been out a while how does everyone feel about it? Is the overheat shut down really an issue at all?

Just trying to decide if it's worth buying Friday (if GS even gets them in)

I may do this over the weekend, since I already packed my old one away.

I remembered that you couldn't transfer to a smaller drive, but I didn't know if maybe something changed with these new models. It did say transfer *from* system when I hooked it up, but that could just pop up regardless. The other reason I ask is because I didn't remember the option to CHOOSE what transferred when I went from 20 to 120.... but that was also a long time ago, so I may be wrong.

I'm more curious because that'll effect what I do with my old 360, since if I can *never* transfer my stuff back to my 120gb, then that drive is basically useless to me.

really? are people freaking out because one person overheated his xbox and put it on youtube?

I just think it is bullshit how you have to send in your controller/wired headset that came with the system in first and pay for shipping out of your pocket in order to get a replacement. I mean, it's been less than 30 days since the product has been out and already there are defects. I called once and was told that I had to pay to ship it back and I had to ship first, so I called last night and got my claim escalated to a specialist after being on hold for 30 minutes to speak to a manager. I had the representative pull up my account information and she realized I had 4 gamertags and all the content I purchased and how long i've been a member of xbl and said that she would try to help me out by escalating the issue and trying to get one shipped out to me as soon as possible but was given no guarantee. I mean seriously, it's the principal here and that is that the item is less than 30 days old and is defective. Therefore, they should own up to their mistake and replace it free completely. I am not going to return my 360 slim to the store just for the headset going defective and they don't have any in stock anyways so it's not that easy. Just hope they resolve this issue and I guess I don't have much of a choice but to get a wireless headset now if I wanna communicate online. Why is it that headsets on the 360 suck? I've tried the wired headset, it sucked. Tried a turtle beach x31 and tritton ax180 univeral headset and both didn't last long as the problem was always the puck that connects to the bottom of the controller. Don't know if it's a defect in the controller or the headsets are made poorly but the headsets cost about $50-$80 and feel poorly made in a sense.

This.

I think it's just a bit of the 'Microsoft makes shitty consoles' mindset/mania. Now, mind you, they do... won't argue that. Problem is, it's lead to this hysteria where people assume that if one new 360 has a problem, they ALL do.

It bugged the shit out of me the other day when I told my friend I picked a Slim up, and the response was "Good luck with that. I heard those have a failure rate of like 40%, or even worse than the old ones".

You know, that system that's been out for a month. Has a failure rate. A high one. fucking seriously?

He knew the system I was talking about and wasn't confusing it with the old one, but apparently his other friend 'heard it on the internet', so it must be true, right?

You can't do a larger-to-smaller transfer.

Internet armchair experts, who rely on YouTube and fellow internet armchair experts, are all the rage right now. I'm hoping that this trend will pass, but I suppose that's a long shot.
really? are people freaking out because one person overheated his xbox and put it on youtube?
I just remember hearing a lot of people freaking out when it first came out and then I sort of stopped following the news about it.

I assumed it wasn't a widespread panic just internet nonsense, so I was just checking to see what people have to say (about everything not just heating) after a couple weeks of usage before I pull the trigger.

Mine has been working great. So sooo quiet and have had no heat issues.

I love the guy that had his power brick die and in the image it was literally sitting right on top of the primary vent on the slim. BRILLIANT!

I just talked to my manager and we have our shipping manifest. We will be getting our entire preorder shipment by the end of the week.

Picked one up today.
I haven't had much hands on time with it as of yet but I can say a few things about it.

While it's smaller, it's not a drastic change. The touch sensitive buttons work well. There's a lot of extra USB ports, all tested working. The big question is the noise factor. It's a HELL of a lot quieter than the previous models that's for sure. When laying flat it's almost silent while running a game off a disc, when standing up there's just a WEE bit of noise. Even while sanding it's almost as quiet as my PS3. I'm happy that I can finally HEAR my games without feeling like I'm inside a jet engine.

I noticed that the lip on the disc tray might be a little larger on the inside, because when I stand it and put a game in the thing seems to hold onto it a lot better.

The amusing thing is that as said before, this sucker gets HOT. But chances are this is really how the inside of the previous xbox got.... you just couldn't tell because there weren't large enough vents to let all that heat out. I'm not going to really worry about that yet though seeing as there's an auto shutoff, and the new stuff under the hood is apparently better at keeping things OK.

I love mine to death so far. If you take the time to install the game, it doesn't even seem to use the DVD drive any more aside to boot the game. Absolutely silent when play COD at night.

Only issue I have noticed, my family has two 360s, each kid has their own HDD, so we plug and play on which ever 360 is available. Can't do that no more.

Something strange here. On the whole, the DVD drive is much quieter, but when I play PGR4 there is a good deal more noise than with other games. The shell of the 360 itself seems to be vibrating (putting pressure on the front corner of the console helps a bit). So far it's just that one game. Coincidentally, one of the few games that has (minor) problems when installed to the hdd.

Well GS called me today to tell me my pre-order was in but I had a heck of a time understanding the guy with his accent. He made it sound like they were doing an instore data transfer for $20 but I told him I already had a cable and asked about the fine print from the promo saying you had 7 days to transfer the data and come back with the receipt. He said "something" about it being a trust issue on their part...so no idea if that was a yes or no...might call back later and see if I can ask someone else lol

I got the new xbox S the day it came out. I love it. Wireless works great at my gf's place. I use wired at home because my Verizon supplied router sux.
I don't know why but now when I quit out of netflix or a game my nxe is ready to go. On my old ms refurb if I went to check achievements after playing it would take almost 90 seconds for the pages to load. This is instant. Strange to me but I like it.
The bad is the supplied cables are shit. I've seen better cables packed with a $30 DVD player. Have your hdmi waiting beforehand. I had to rush out and buy one at target. Ouch. My media remote doesn't seem to be as responsive with this xbox but it works. I had some sound issues which turn out to be caused by the the hdmi handshaking between the xbox and my HP tv. I learned to turn on xbox THEN my tv. Problem solved although it's a pain.

Sorry for the lousy writing. Typing on iPhone while working.

It's pretty ridiculous they don't even give the old component/rca cables they gave out when I bought an xbox 4 years ago. Also curious if anybody else had an problems with hooking it up via HDMI or the VGA cable. It hooked up fine to my Dell monitor via VGA but when i tried to hook it up to a my tv via VGA I could get sound, but no video. I also couldn't get one HDMI cable to work on it at all.

Hey guys I have a question about transferring data...

Can you pick what data you want to transfer over to the new xbox or does it just take all of the data off the old one?
Something strange here. On the whole, the DVD drive is much quieter, but when I play PGR4 there is a good deal more noise than with other games. Mirror's Edge does that for me too. I just installed the game.. quiet again :)

So I traded in my old 360 today and got the Short. I'm transferring content as we speak. The initial setup was a bit of a pain considering you can't just transfer HDD content from the get-go, gamertag and all. Then I had to jiggle the transfer cable around a bit to make it recognize it. Then I accidently asked it to transfer content from the 250gb HDD to the 120. So that was a bit of a pain. It's almost done now though

EDIT: It also didn't transfer my installed games, either. BS

It's funny... I haven't played a 360 game off the disc since, uh, they introduced the installs. This discussion reminded me of that.

In terms of noise, I was amazed to realize that a lot of what I actually hear with this new one is actually the power brick fan, not the console itself. I have my systems in a very open area, so the brick isn't hidden behind anything to block the noise. Once that fan ramps up, it seems to account for at least 50% or more of the 'noise' I hear when the system is on.

I haven't either. The thing sounds really quiet. Over use, I imagine it'll get much louder though (most electronics due). The touch sounds are weird though. I'll be honest when it comes to the size though: Can't tell the difference.

Just got my 360 slime...

It was strange, I traded my launch 360 and they even commented how they were surprised it was from 2005... but they didn't even test to see if it worked they just accepted it

why the hell didnt M$ add the cable/disc and a HDMI with the system

bread's done
