I really wish each of these updates would come with a changelog at the time of release...
I second this, give us a damn list of changes and new features added!

FW updates aren't supposed to be a treasure hunt in figuring out what they do >.>

Well the way it works is Sony sends out the update (thinking from Japan) and everyone gets it at the same time. So it is a decent hour over there, but here we have to wait for them to mirror the update on the site, translate and so on.

>Oh and rumor is that the larger HD's people have been putting in their PS3's might not be supported anymore.

that better not include upgrading a 20gb to a 60gb hd.
that better not include upgrading a 20gb to a 60gb hd.
120GB is the max I read, but haven't seen much on this.

Why would this even happen? >.>

I'm all for updates, but if certain features keep dissapearing or being limited, it kinda...sucks.

I read that the first FW Japanese consoles supported 720p for Blu Ray movies, but a later update removed that feature. Stuff like that blows.

Anyone else having Blu-Ray movies doing that auto pause thing again after this firmware update? Im trying to watch Stranger than Fiction and it keeps doing that pause/skip thing from before.

did it to me today with Casino Royale, but only hte first time I watched it, the 2nd time it was fine.

Mine did that with THE PRESTIGE. First time it did that for me. It was just a rental.

That happened to me when I was watching the Wicker Man. Wicker man is the last movie I watched, it had never happened before

1.6 coming on launch day.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/772/772650p1.html

Speaking at a European demonstration of Home and LittleBigPlanet yesterday, Harrison revealed that retail units will come pre-installed with firmware version 1.5. However, the backward-compatibility enabled firmware update (1.6) is being released on launch day, March 23. Harrison also promised that Sony would keep working to ensure the number of compatible titles increases with future firmware updates.
i don't suppose they've worked on ps2 game upscaling for that software emulation of theirs yet?
Or the upscaling issue with CRT HD TV's, unfortunately. I cannot wait for that one.

Newer games already upscale. This doesn't have to do with the firmware but rather the code in the game.
Sony gave the tools to access the scaler in January, which is why newer games like the new Sonic, and Virtua Fighter 5 are 720p max but upscale to 1080i/p.

It's an interesting way to "fix" the problem for now. The question, then, is this: are companies required to implement this into new games?

It's not a fix. Obviously, older games are out of luck, but eh, those games are few, and will be forgotten in the coming months.

I don't see why a game company wouldn't do this. Having a game scale wouldn't be hard to implement at all now with the tools.

Wireless Hotspot access to PS3 via PSP coming in 1.6!

"When will the PS3’s remote play functionality be available from outside the home?
This was one question I had to ask - and one of the major reasons I wanted a PS3 in the first place, it’s a really great piece of media functionality. I missed this question in the Q&A but managed to ask him afterwards. He said “Remote Play from wireless hotspots? It’s included in the 1.6 update“. It’s an awesome feature - allowing you to access any photo, video or audio media stored on your PS3 at home, using your PSP, from anywhere in the world. Nice."

hmm wouldn't that require that your ps3 be on all the time though when you go out? Unless by accessing it from the PSP you can turn on and off the system somehow, in which case, that would be quite awesome.

I haven't bothered to do much checking around clicking of links, but when is 1.6 due for release?

I haven't really done much with my PS3 except watch Kung Fu Hustle lately :p, so when 1.6 comes out I'll update. I haven't updated since 1.51 so this'll save me some time/waiting around

I assume when the PS3 launches in Europe which is March 23rd...I assume America will get 3.0 roughly around the same time.

Whoa whoa, what's this talk about 3.0? I iz Confwuzed now o_O

Shhh... It is okay. We can worry about 3.0 later. Relax, focus on 1.6... shhhhh... 1.6...
Whoa whoa, what's this talk about 3.0? I iz Confwuzed now o_O
1.6 to Europe is what 3.0 is to us.

I'd be shocked if Europe got PSP to PS3 wireless options (pulling video/music anywhere) before we did.

Does that even make sense?
1.6 is simply 1.6.

Or are you saying because we've waited for a while, it'll be like a big update for us. And wouldn't that make it 2.0. Or maybe you're talking about PSP firmware that added the PS3 connectivity.

Ugh, nevermind, it's just 1.6.

1.6 is next around the world, they zap it to all the systems at the same time. It might show up on the site in Japan first, but it is always open for everyone to download once it hits the internet via the system update fuction.

we're getting 1.6 as well.

um, maybe we'll get 3.0 in 2009?

Official details of what will definetly be in 1.6 this Thursday.
They say there's more, but I would think that if we were getting a software emulator, that would've been bigger news than background downloading (which is definitely appreciated too!)

Maybe they're going to roll it out later when they start shipping EE-less PS3s to the U.S.

The entire world is getting the same firmware at the same time, so I would assume that would have to be a part of 1.60. But who knows, maybe IGN just forgot to mention that or it's just assumed that is part of the firmware upgrade.

In the upcoming 1.6 update, PSP owners can opt to use WiFi hotspots to connect with their PS3, which not only allows for greater mobility, but also allows 20GB owners to partake in the fun. Set your calendars for March 22.

Oh hell yes!
20GB forever!!!

This was the one feature I was sad to miss out on with the 20GB.

Damn right, and it would make no sense whatsoever to leave it out of the 20GB model. I might actually make use of this feature, but the sticking point is leaving your PS3 on.

This page on Kotaku says that the remote play update will NOT allow you to access your PS3 using your PSP from any wireless access point, but will instead simply allow the 20GB PS3 to use Remote Play even with an external wireless access point. I've read the original Japanese, and that is what it says. It sounds like this guy (quoted earlier in the thread) was wrong. Presumably the other functionality is coming in a later update.

I am happy about the full onscreen keyboard though. I can't believe it took them so long to realize that using a cell-phone style keyboard was a dumb move.

So still no wireless PSP to PS3 anywhere like Sony promised? Wonderful. Atleast we have background downloading for the 5 demos and 2 movie trailers up
Stop trolling and leave the thread to people who actually want to discuss this stuff seriously.
I am! Its been 5 months as we still don't have custom backgrounds.

I'm hoping for backgrounds too this time :) I don't mind not having them, but it'll be really cool when we can finally do it.

remote play, I couldn't care less about

Rats, that's what I wanted. Real hotspot connectivity.

I'm actually faster with the cell pad because it takes less movements combined with the word list.

I'm fastest however with the wireless keyboard.;)

Let me rephrase:
I can't believe it took them so long to realize that ONLY using a cell-phone style keyboard was a dumb move.

It really feels like they left out some obvious stuff just to make it seem like they are actually 'giving' us something. No custom avatars or backgrounds? How hard is that to implement?

Well, they've been using that keyboard on the PSP since it launched, and I think they were trying too hard to standardize the UI across platforms.

To be honest, I actually prefer it. It's quicker once you get used to it. But they should've at least included the option, like you said.

Unfortunately your right.

1.6 info and date.

Comes out this Thursday, according to a press release from Japan. Details:

 • Folding @Home: Now you can participate in the worldwide distributed computing protein folding experiments from Standford University, in hopes to further understand human genetics. You can access the Folding @Home application under Network on the XMB
 • Internet Browser Pinpoint Zoom and Resolution Settings: You can now choose to zoom into a portion of a website if you have a huge display and can’t read things, or you can set the browser resolution to a different size so everything can be viewed easier
 • Full size on-screen keyboard: Makes it easier to type messages and web addresses with the controller
 • Remote Play via Wireless Access Point: People with a 20GB PS3 can now utilize the Remote Play feature with a PSP by using any wireless access point. (No official word if you will be able to use the PSP to access your PS3 at home from anywhere, maybe in a future update)
 • Background Downloading from the PlayStation Store: This one is cool. It’ll make a big difference when downloading things on the PS3. No longer do you have to sit and wait at the download screen forever. No official word if you can queue up downloads, or if you can load games from disc while downloading.
