The Video Game Soundtrack Deals Thread (OP Revamped 04/28/16)

CAGiversary!

Welcome to CAG's general deals thread for video game soundtracks. The reason for this thread's existence are: 1) VGM collecting can be very expensive, since most physical soundtracks come in the form of Japanese imports, and 2) good deals can be had if one looks hard enough.

Shops listings include basic info, pros and cons, and currently ongoing deals (if any). Major deals will be listed in the updates toward the top of this post. Unless otherwise noted, all prices are in US dollars or Japanese yen. I'll do my best to keep this updated on a regular basis, and hope that my fellow CAGs can help out :)

Thread Updates:
04/28/16: I've gone ahead and reformatted the thread, as I'd thought about doing late last year. The biggest change is that specific deals and sales are now noted in the section below called "Major New Sales/Deals". Shop listings will still include links to sale/clearance sections, but not individual albums. I might still tweak the formatting here and there. Anyway, please let me know what you think.

Other changes for this update: iam8bit and Laced Records have been added to the Official Shops, and some other shops have had their permanent sale/deal sections added (Amazon.co.jp, CDJapan, DeepDiscount, Blizzard Gear, etc.).

Major New Sales/Deals (last updated 04/28/16):
- The Square Enix Online Store is having a big spring sale until May 8th, which includes a handful of CDs at 20% off.
- CDJapan is offering 10% extra points on all released CDs until May 5th.

Albums of the Update:
- The Clock Tower series got a 4-CD 20th anniversary sound collection late last year, in both standard and limited editions.
- For their own 20th anniversary, the original Pokemon Red and Green finally have a Super Music Collection.
- Continuing on this theme, a "Tales of..." series orchestral album came out last month for its 20th.
- As is typical for Blizzard collector's editions, the one for Overwatch will include an OST.
- Joining Capcom's other "Sound Box" releases is one for the Mega Man Battle Network series. This set is out on June 15th.
- Currently playing while I work on this update: the PixelJunk Eden OST (via Steam).

Old updates:
01/24/15: Big updates to Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.com, DeepDiscount.com, and Play-Asia today. Of particular note is the addition of a listing of albums that are free to stream if you have Amazon Prime; see the Amazon.com deals section for those. There's some smaller updates here and there, plus some updated links.

By the way, the dollar-to-yen exchange rate continues to be really, really good, so if you're considering importing, now's a great time to do it!

Albums of the Update:
- According to some shop listings, Nobuo Uematsu has a new release out on March 4th. Thing is, it doesn't have a title yet, and not much is known about it in general.
- Also coming out that day is the Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance Original Soundtrack. This year marks the game's tenth anniversary, so better late than never for the full OST to come out, I guess. By the way, Radiant Dawn's OST goes on sale the same day.
- The third "Distant Worlds" Final Fantasy orchestral album came out just a few days ago. This is the Japanese release; no word yet on a US version.
- Ace Attorney is seeing yet another release: Gyakuten Saiban Meets Again: Orchestra & Jazz. This is a standard release compilation of the (hard-to-find) orchestra and jazz arrange albums, for a budget price.
- Hotline Miami 2 is getting a pricy collector's edition vinyl soundtrack. No word on a release date, AFAIK, but this might already be the best-looking game OST of the year.

Glossary:
VGM - Video Game Music.
OST - Original Sound Track. A variation is OSV, which is short for "Original Sound Version".
Arrange album - Game music albums that are not OSTs, but rerecordings or remixes of game music. Square Enix's "Piano Collections" albums and live concert recordings fit in this category.
First Press - Refers to an edition of a soundtrack (or a bonus that comes with it) that is only available with the first print run. Many such soundtracks have the same MSRP as "normal" editions.
Doujin - A Japanese term for independantly made and produced media items, including games (and those games' soundtracks) and fan works such as game remix albums.
Obi - The cardstock piece that wraps around the spine of most Japanese CDs. Used CDs that are missing the obi (if there was one originally) will usually be cheaper, but are not considered "complete". Often machine-translated as "band".

SAL - Surface Air Lift. Economy airmail, with no tracking or insurance (though some shops offer "Registered SAL", which includes tracking and limited insurance). Usually the cheapest international shipping available from Japan; can take anywhere from ten days to six weeks.
EMS - Express Mail Service. What it says. The fastest and priciest international postal shipping from Japan, it usually takes between 3-5 days. Always includes tracking and insurance. Highly recommended for large and/or expensive orders.
Proxy service - A type of shopping service international buyers use to get items that are only sold locally. There are also forwarding services in which an international buyer places the order themselves and has it shipped to a local address, from which it's forwarded to said buyer.

How to Find Game Music on Japanese-Language Sites (when you don't know Japanese):
Copy and paste either the title (in kanji) or the catalog number of an album into the search bar, either at the specific site you're searching, or through Google. VGMdb is a good reference for both types of information.

Free and Bonus Game OSTs:
Unfortunately, the lists for these soundtracks have been lost during the transition to CAG 3.0, and I foolishly did not think to save them beforehand. Therefore, I have begun recompiling both lists here from memory, plus there are some new listings as well. As always, suggestions are appreciated!
If anyone is into hip hop, and FFVII, rapper "Random" has a really cool themed album here. It sounds pretty good to me.

They have regular and signed copies here. They also have signed copies of Super Meat Boy's soundtrack. You can preview the entire album in the link below

One song feels out of place to me, but overall the album does a really good job of recounting some key points of FF7's story and characters. Quite well done.

Not necessarily a deal, as it's been this way for a while now, but the Tower of Heaven OST is name your own price (minimum 99 cents) at flashygoodness. Even if you've never played the game, the soundtrack is wonderful, and worth checking out.

Not exactly a deal, but the Play for Japan charity album is now on iTunes for $10. It should be out on Amazon on the 15th. All proceeds go to the Japanese Red Cross.

There's some great (and not so great) stuff on there, but overall it's a very cool album with enormous variety. Bear McCreary's track especially was a big surprise. The excellent two-piano Mario medley is amazing and exclusive to iTunes, so even though I normally prefer Amazon for digital music, I'd say go with iTunes for this one.

OP updated! Added lots of new listings for discounted OSTs at Amazon.co.jp, a new Sumthing Digital coupon code that's good until the end of 2011, and more.

The Sanctum soundtrack came out yesterday for $5. It's a cool ambient/electronic soundtrack with mellow tracks from when you're building towers and some faster ones for the action phases. It feels similar to the Mirror's Edge soundtrack, so it's worth taking a look if you enjoyed anything from that.

The way they're doing it is a little weird because right now it's only available as Steam DLC, so you need the game in order to buy it. As a plus, though, you get the full soundtrack (and a bonus track) in both MP3 and wav, and they've said any new tracks will download automatically like a Steam update.

And really, you should get the game anyway because it's a lot of fun. 4P co-op tower defense + FPS, cool sci-fi aesthetic, weird monster design, etc. To celebrate the soundtrack's release, they've permanently dropped the price to $10, or new players can get a game/soundtrack bundle for $13.

Two things.....

Anyone know where/how to get an MP3 of the metal/hip hop version of Warpigs from the Gears of War 3 trailer? I friggin need that.

Second, The Bastion soundtrack is for sale on the supergiant website. It's honestly the best OST I've heard this year. I preordered the signed CD version, which comes with the MP3 download, too.

To my knowledge that isnt a remixed version of war pigs. unless somebody can prove me entirely wrong..which im sure will happen.

I received my first VGM World order today. Really happy with how the whole transaction went. I bought three rare (and rareish) used game soundtracks, which were practically like new, but I was sort of expecting that given that it's a Japanese retailer. The packaging in the box was excellent, with lots of bubble wrap, and tape securing everything in place. Highly recommend this store!

I've also learned today that there's a handful of game OSTs on Bandcamp; mostly indie stuff of course. Will do some poking around and include the site in the next OP update, once I can get around to it :p

Deepdiscount.com is having a Video Game Soundtrack Sale (that's the direct link). Their selection isn't the greatest, but they have some pretty good ones in there. I did a little blog highlighting my favorite choices from their game soundtracks. I ordered Mass Effect and Uncharted 2 at $9.99 a piece. Their shipping isn't the fastest, but the prices are usually good.

Dark Void, Kameo and Advent Rising all have great soundtracks (Advent Rising in particular).
A lot of those in the sale are out of stock, including Mass Effect and Uncharted 2. :(
Thanks for the head's up though!

No, not sure. They are generally an overstock kind of place, so often times with niche products, it's until the inventory start running low. They hardly ever list actual end dates to their specials though. They usually are around for a week at minimum.

Thanks; good to know. There's one or two on there that I'd like, but I just spend a decent amount of money on rare soundtracks, so I don't know if I'll pick up any more game music right now.

Here are a few to get you started:

Final Fantasy Distant Worlds http://store.ffdistantworlds.com/
Danny Baranowsky (composer of the excellent Super Meat Boy soundtrack) http://dbsoundworks.bandcamp.com/

Just got the Humble Frozen Synapse Bundle...
Not only does Frozen sysnapse come with a separate download for its soundtrack but so does all of the additional games you get if you pay over the average (currently $4.50).
thats
Frozen Synapse soundtrack
Trine Soundtrack
Shadowgrounds & Shadowgrounds: Survivor soundtracks
Jack Claw Soundtrack
and a preorder on a game still in development which will LIKELY include soundtrack.

All for less than $5 to charity

OP updated. Thanks to everyone who posted new deals (and links of interest) :D The Distant Worlds store was already listed under "Square Enix", BTW, so I didn't include that with the Bandcamp stuff.

Thanks for the updates! I'm going to browse through them in a bit.

The Mass Effect soundtrack is so good. I felt like they really toned down the synthy 70s/80s feel in Mass Effect 2 and was disappointed, and then who knows what's going on with Clint Mansell and ME3. I'll always have my Mass Effect 1, though. :nottalking:

Made a minor edit to the Amazon.co.jp section in the OP: removed the Kirby 64, Klonoa, and Smash Bros. OSTs since I didn't see at the time that they were unavailable for international shipping at those prices, and Amazon's own prices for Kirby and Klonoa are much closer to the MSRP (as for Smash Bros., they don't have that one at all).

(By the way, if you like JPop, I highly recommend the Project Diva 2nd soundtrack listed under Amazon.co.jp, especially at that price. It is incredibly good, and I'm not just saying that because I have a Miku-related avatar :p)
and then who knows what's going on with Clint Mansell and ME3.
I'll tell you what's going on with that: the ME3 soundtrack will be awesome.

A DARIUS SOUNDTRACK IS APPROACHING FAST. (They released the Darius Twin soundtrack on iTunes last week.)

I'm agonizing over this because it's $10 and about 20 minutes of music, but I love that soundtrack. I'll probably cave after a few more days of agonizing. They also released a CD version for 1200¥ (which I would totally do), but I haven't seen it pop up on any sites yet.

Black Friday and now this thread, ugh my wallet is BLEEDING. Thanks OP :boxing:

Btw for those who want to order from Amazon.co.jp, our pal Dv8 has a package forwarding service from Japan for any items that they won't send normally. Just a heads up.

I noticed all of the Square Enix Music came down from the iTunes store a few months ago. Anyone know the reason why? It seemed to coincide with when they took Square Enix Members down, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

"Currently, official Square Enix soundtracks are temporarily unavailable for sale due to the changes we are going through with the iTunes North American service. The items will be available as soon as the preparations are in place. We hope to resume availability of these items by March.”

They're back.

Edit: I just noticed that Falcom soundtracks are now on the U.S. iTunes store:

I believe that this is a recent development. I don't recall having seen them before.

Great news on both counts :)

I sorely need to update this thread, but was thinking of doing a new one instead that's better organized. Opinions (and/or suggestions), everyone?

Uurrrgghhhhhhhh there was some rare stuff I wanted from VGM World and now it's out of stock. Time to get brutalized on eBay. :cold:

The free soundtracks list is off to a good start! I recommend the Mighty Switch Force! OST, which really should cost something. (Great game, too.)

Browsing VGM World has always been a pain in the ass, since they leave their sold out item listings online. Skimming the catalog now, but nothing's really jumping out at me so far...

And thanks for the OST rec ^^ It looks to be a "pay what you want" kind of deal, but I'll still add it to the list.

Updated the OP. I'd forgotten to add the iTunes recs from 11440 and metaly in the previous update, but now I've added them... in a way. The Grand Knights History and Muramasa albums (and more!) can be found under "Basiscape" and the Darius Twin OST (and even more!) under "Taito".

I also stumbled upon the Epic Mickey OST while poking around and added that. Sadly, the excellent soundtrack for de Blob had to be removed, as it's no longer on iTunes :whistle2:(

There's a bunch of new store listings, too! And this isn't mentioned in the OP, but the free and included soundtrack lists have been fleshed out a bit since my last update. Anyway, see the OP for all the info.

Browsed through VGM World a bit and found some old collectibles I didn't think I'd ever find. Too bad it seems impossible to just browse the collectibles sections, I bet I could find some more gems.

Well, this could hardly be called a deal, but the Soul Calibur V soundtrack is on iTunes. Each of the three discs has been turned into a volume, and each volume is priced at $9.99. For some reason, volumes two and three were released first, but now volume one is also available. It should be noted that one song is missing from volume two.

The cost to import the CD version of this soundtrack from Japan is $80, though.
