Well, I am just going to post my settings here and then we can talk about it later.
The whole Vivid/Standard/Cinema/Game/Custom thing actually does make a difference as they have different color saturation.
As far as which one to choose, it depends on your taste and the ambient light.
For me, on most TV shows I like the colors to pop a little bit. Plus, I am generally watching it in a bright room, so the brighter settings look better. So I use these settings:
Standard
Picture: 78
Brightness: 50
Color: 60
Tint: -3 (Although this depends a lot on the individual set, so change it how you like it)
Sharpness: 50
Color Temp: Warm
Color Management: OFF (Always leave this off)
Black Level: Light
If I am watching a movie, and I want a grittier, darker look, I will switch the Cinema mode. It doesn't look that great in a bright room, but if you turn off all the lights and watch a dark movie, it looks great to me.
I would use these settings:
Cinema
Picture: 84
Brightness: 50
Color: 34
Tint: -3
Sharpness: 50
Color Temp: Warm
Color Mgmt: OFF
Black Level: Light
For most games, I really want a vivid picture on them. So I use a lot brighter settings. So I use these:
Custom
Picture: 100
Brightness: 75
Color: 70
Tint: 0
Sharpness: 100
Color Temp: Warm
Color Mgmt: OFF
Black Level: Light
