thinking about getting one

It does take some work to get that stuff working so make sure you look into it before buying and ending up disappointed. As far as I know, with the slim you need another PSP to get that stuff working, so maybe you want an original?

Last i checked you could do the Pandora battery softhack with without a PSP phat. Even if you can't, i'm sure there are resources online on getting the tools required; sony battery pandorized and a memory stick with the necessary files.
 
Maybe. I haven't checked how to put Custom Firmware on a slim since it was originally done and found out I needed another PSP to do it. Guess they've made it easier now?
