So I have a couple friends with time warner and ever single one of them time out mid match in CoD4. They can't even finish matches without getting kicked out at least 2 times. It's pretty sad since it's only people with Time Warner. I myself have AT&T and experience none of this. Has any one else with Time Warner had this? They should really tell customers that their crap internet isn't made for gaming. It's not a crappy connection since most of them pay over $50 for the best pack they have

I've experienced the exact opposite, actually. I've had Time Warner for about 3 years now and I've always been called out for being host in online games and having a great connection.

I only had one serious problem, and like Brak said, it was a shitty router. They came out and replaced it about a year ago and I've been fine since.

We (our household) has always had problems with Time Warner. We replaced our old router, nothing. Then we replaced our 10-year old cable modem and no more drops. Horrah.

I've had zero problems with Time Warner and Live, and that's with both my roommate's system and mine connected wirelessly along with a desktop PC and laptop.

Time Warner just sucks in general. When I had their service, I had no disconnects, but the internet ran at 1/8th of the speed I was paying for. It wasn't the computer either, as I had problems with the 360 plugged directly into the modem. Verizon DSL is much better.
I really like Comcast! There have been a few poop outs, but overall a good run with the service. (just wish it was cheaper! ;) )
Exact opposite for me. Comcast fucking sucks. My internet is ALWAYS going down, the thing runs VERY SLOW some nights, and the people CONTINUE to tell us that "It's our (my families) fault the internet isn't working correctly"/

I regularly use a Time Warner Road Runner connection and it is great. I almost always have a better ping then everyone else in the games.

I think it must be something on your friends ends... maybe downloading too much porn in the background?

If your friends have replaced their routers, the next thing is to replace the cable modem. If swapping both the router and the cable modem make no difference, then they need to call Time Warner and have them come out and check signal strength of the cable connection. If it's too high or too low, you can see issues with dropped connections.

Cox Communications is terrible. It's only acceptable if you don't download or play games online. I want to set them on fire.

Although I don't have Time Warner (I have AT&T DSL) I've been suffering from a lot of dropouts in our connection lately. It's progressively gotten worse for about the last month or two. AT&T just came out and replaced our modem since it totally crapped out on us so I think it might be the router. How do you go about checking to see if the router needs replacing or not?

I had issues similar to what your friends had OP, and it turned out to be a faulty cable modem. Went to Comcast and replaced it, and haven't had a problem since.

Try connecting directly into the modem, and see if you still have dropped connections. If you don't, it's the router. If you do, it's the modem.

You mean connecting the modem directly to the computer correct? I figured that would be the way to test the problem.

Strange thing is , and maybe this does prove for sure that the router is at fault , that my wii , 360 and laptop , which all connect to the router thru wi-fi , all have the most dropouts , while our family pc and my dads work pc which are both connected directly to the router seem to have less frequent dropouts , although frequently enough to be a problem.
I have Time Warner and I have no problems. Expect today I had 2 connection interruptions during COD4.
that often comes from the host of the room though, so it may not have been on your end. i can't say much for or against roadrunner since someone i play with now has roadrunner and it is a pretty bad connection. the last person i had heard before that who had roadrunner was back on my ps2 socom days and his connection was great, it is possible that it is just a lot slower in the OP's area than in some of the other people in this thread, though i can't say for sure.

Yep, that's what I meant. And I had the same issues as you did. The way I tested to see if the modem kept dropping connections was I wired the PC directly to the modem, opened up AIM (well, Trillian in my case), and opened a chat with someone. I then just left it running overnight. When I lost connection, it left a message in the chat window, followed by another message when I regained the connection, so I was able to see how often and for how long I lost connections. You might be able to do something similar.

I have Time Warner, and it generally works. People fail to realize that location has a lot to do with your QOS. If your network backbone is overworked the QOS is going to drop.

I have TWC and I used to always have problems with my 360 (The Dash took FOREVER to load up and I would lag online)

Then I went into my router and put my 360 into the DMZ (I have wireless BTW) and ever since I did that, my dash loads in about 5 seconds now and my downloads from the Marketplace are very fast (I downloaded my free CoD4 Mappack in about 4 minutes - ~440MB file)

Well to update my situation some , I hooked the family PC up directly to the modem this morning and left it for everyone to use while I was at work this evening. The feedback I got from my brothers who used it during the day was that it "seemed" to dropout less often than before , but still was dropping out somewhere between once every 30 minutes to an hour. They also said that when it did drop out it only stayed out for like 15 to 30 seconds , which is definatly an improvement to the usual 30 seconds to a minute or more.

Also , I noticed that one of the setting on the modem setup page , where I can change it from PPPoE mode to Bridge mode , it has two settings. Bridge and Routed Bridge , what's the difference? I usually just set it to regular bridge.

Well, I'm not entirely sure what those modes are, as I've never played with that, but you either have a faulty modem, or somethings wrong with the cable running into your house. What I would recommend is calling up your ISP, explaining that you've been having dropped connections, even when directly wired into the modem, and that you would like a replacement modem. Took me 5 minutes on the phone, and a 10 minute drive, and I had fully working internet again.

I have Time Warner Road Runner and the service for me is pretty decent.
Im usually the host for my groups COD4 matches and we have minimal problems.
When I try to host Team Fortress 2 games I get lag with anything over 10 people though.

One of my friends called and they told him that they are having problems with connections with people in La County and most do refer to online gaming. Well most of my friends couldn't take less for what they pay for so they cancelled with TW and are moving to AT&T or Verizon. I mean come on, you pay all this money for something not to work or be limited to what you can do.
