1. Avatar - Despite the story having similarities with Dances with Wolves and being a little cliche, I still enjoyed it a lot. The CG was great, and made me want to believe that the Naavi could be real. It left me wanting a sequel right away, not to mention a Blu-Ray copy >,<

2. Up - This movie caught me off guard, I didn't think it would be so emotional at some points. Pixar's definitive movie? Maybe.

3. Inglorious Basterds - Awesome dialog in this movie. Landa was absolutely mesmerizing and kept me at the edge of my seat. This could've been a low budget film and have the same outcome for me.

4. Star Trek - Great reboot, awesome opening, full of action, and moments that make you say "Wow". It had some comedic moments in there that balanced out the movie.

5. District 9 - There isn't any movie like it. It has a nice story, I loved how the film treats the protagonist and see all the predicaments he gets himself into. Poor guy.

Honorable mentions:

Ponyo - Great movie! Hayao Miyazaki has definitely surpassed Disney in terms of quality recently.

Watchmen - Totally forgot this was released this year. Good movie, just didn't leave a lasting impression on me, but I still liked it.

Drag Me to Hell
- More Sam Raimi horror films please.

Up in the Air

Brothers

Hurts Locker

You have to take my list with a grain of salt because there's a bunch of movies I missed this year (ie The Road, The Hangover, Inglourious Basterds, etc) but from what I've seen I enjoyed these the most:

Watchmen
District 9
Star Trek
Taken
Pandorum

By far the worst movie I've seen this year is A Haunting in Connecticut.

Lots of the same movies...mine in no particular order:

Star Trek
District 9
Inglourious Basterds
The Hangover
Up

Have yet to see Avatar, The Hurt Locker or Up in the Air but hear great things about each.

Is that something to brag about? Especially that you actually sat through nos. 92 and 95?

No, it's nothing to brag about. And I have a wife with some bad taste in movies, so that explains #92, I Hate Valentine's Day, and I'll watch any piece of crap with Lindsay Lohan in it, (#95, Labor Pains).

Lohan's next film will be Machete, I'm sure more people will watch that, than Lohan's last few films.

Release date: April 16th.

5. Precious
4. Inglorious Basterds
3. A Serious Man
2. Up In The Air
1. The Hurt Locker

I still haven't seen some big oscar-friendly movies (An Education, A Single Man, Crazy Heart) but I'm hoping to see most (or all) of the oscar noms before the show.
The Hurt Locker is probably in my top 3 for the decade.
Up in the Air is a beautiful capsule of life in the 2000s.
A Serious Man is another masterpiece from the Coens, and I liked it more than No Country, and ranks behind Fargo and Barton Fink as my 3rd favourite Coen film.
Inglorious was an epic Tarantino adventure, complete with one of the great performances of the year from Chirstoph Waltz.
Precious was absolutely heartbreaking, and featured the most powerful perfomance of the year from Mo'nique (never expected to say that).

Up, District 9, The Hangover, Watchmen and Knowing (seriously!) would probably round out my top 10.

Best Movies:
1) Up
2) Where the Wild Things Are
3) (500) Days of Summer
4) The Hurt Locker
5) Moon

That's my best Oscar-ish list. Sadly, I haven't seen any of the indie darlings that might actually win best picture. I did see The Road, and I don't think it belongs anywhere near that list.

And hell, if we're counting movies we actually got to see in 2009, let's get Mickey Rourke that Oscar.

Best Blockbusters:
1) Avatar
2) Inglourious Basterds
3) Star Trek
4) Watchmen
5) District 9

That list isn't necessarily mutually exclusive with the first list, but it is this year.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the worst movie I saw in the theater this year.

1. The Hangover
2. The Road
3. Star Trek
4. District 9
5. Watchmen

Avatar, Up, Coraline, and Julie and Julia would round off some sort of 'top' list for 2009. I still need to see Up In The Air, Public Enemies, and The Hurt Locker.

Ah, I take my previous list back. The movie 3 Idiots is my 4th favorite movie of the year. Its a Indian movie about the pressures of college in India. If you liked Slumdog Millionaire, you might like this movie as well.

1. Up
2. Drag Me to Hell
3. Star Trek
4. 3 Idiots
5. District 9

1. District 9
2. Avatar
3. Inglourious Basterds

After that, it's hard to choose from Ponyo, The Hangover, Coraline, Up, Anvil, The Hurt Locker, and possibly a few I'm forgetting. Also, while I'm pretty sure I saw Gran Torino in 2009, I would consider it a 2008 film. I saw The Wrestler and Slumdog Millionaire in 2009 (when they were released here), but those are both 2008 films, so I can't see why Gran Torino would be any different.
