Using a External HDD with 360?

Does anyone know if you can store game files on a External HDD (that is connected via USB to a 360) as a simple storage device?
I'd like to be able to move some of my Rock Band stuff and Map Packs to a connected HDD when I'm not using them. Then be able to move the files back when I want to play them.
I'd also thought this might work for the 'Play from Hard Drive' function.

I believe your 360 needs to be "unlocked" to be able to save games or game downloads on an External HDD

You can play movies and music off an external HDD but I believe the movies need to be formatted to play on your 360.

You shouldn't be able to since my psp doesn't show up in the memory when I connect it.
