The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.
An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and BlackBerrys
Why do they even bother mentioning gold? I thought it was a useless relic?
The government gets gold, lithium, opium and oil, but what do the guys who did the fighting get? PTSD? Blown up? A little flag on their graves on Memorial Day?
“There is stunning potential here,” Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of the United States Central Command, said in an interview on Saturday. “There are a lot of ifs, of course, but I think potentially it is hugely significant."
Potential for who? Amurrrrrrca? Glad to know we're spreading our goodness around the world.
For kicks, here's Alvin Greene (allegedly), with some likely cleanup from alleged volunteers who are allegedly helping him out:
It is time to start repecting other nations. Those minerals are for the Afghans to decide over and not NATO or the United States. As Senator I will filibuster to the end any bill that would fund, authorize, expand, or continue military presence in Afghanistan. The original mission to catch Osama Bin Laden has failed, and it is time to remove the troops.
