Hi all! I've got a new short story up on Amazon and Barnes & Noble that's video game related, and I wanted to offer some CAGs the opportunity to read it for free. "Postmortem" is a story I wrote several years ago as my way of putting to bed some ill feelings left over from my days working at a video game studio in Austin. One day we showed up for work, and found that we were locked out of the building. Before we knew it, the whole company was being liquidated.

A lot of the stuff in the story is true, but I won't get into specifics. Suffice it to say that the experience was kind of soul-crushing, and although I've worked in the industry since (as a freelancer), the whole nightmare made me drastically reevaluate my goals.

The story is quite brief (2200 words), and hopefully humorous in a Vonnegut sort of way. My plan is to eventually make it free. Amazon and Barnes & Noble don't allow that, exactly, so there's a workaround I have to set up first. In the meantime, I'm happy to provide some gift codes (let's say ten) to anyone interested in reading it now on Kindle (or with the Kindle for PC app). Here are my only requests:

1. At least for now, I'd like to give them to folks who've been a member here for at least a year. If there's not much interest from veterans, I'll open it up to everyone.

2. If you get a code, all I ask is that you redeem it today and post a short review of the story on Amazon after you've read it. Doesn't have to be a dissertation or anything... it's a short story, so a couple sentences would be fine.

So if you're interested, just post here and I'll start sending out codes via PM. Thanks for reading!

i know i havent been a member for a year, but, i am writer and a vonnegut completionist. if you would like some honest feedback, for better or worse, then i am interested. Even if you dont want to give me an amazon card, but it would be nice! Dont mind helping out a fellow comrade in the literary arts!

Post Mortem is one of my favorite underrated PC games, so I'd love to give it a read based on the name alone. :D

I've been looking around for something new to read for awhile now actually. So I'm actually quite interested.

Okay, Collectordragon and lionheart4life, codes have been sent. And with that, I think I'm done... at least for now. Please remember to post a short review on Amazon after you've read it. (And thank you to Thunderchunky and bitterbuffalo, who've both already posted reviews!)

Okay, AfroMcNinja, thebokchoyman, and bkjohns1, check your PMs. I sent you all gift codes. Please remember to post a short review at Amazon after you're done... I still only have two reviews up (thanks to Thunderchunky and bitterbuffalo), and two other people still have yet to redeem their codes. (It doesn't count as a "sale" until the code is redeemed.)

Thanks in advance for following through!

I am interested in reading it as well. Kurt Vonnegut was a brilliant satirist and writer, although I would be hard pressed to say which of his works is currently my favorite. Slaughter-House Five remains a classic, but I am also rather fond of his short stories.

Okay, I sent out a couple more codes... two people that had received codes earlier had yet to redeem them after two full days, so I sent their codes to two other posters. Sorry lionheart4life and iRandom, but you already had a couple days and never redeemed them. You can always PM me if you'd like to discuss it.

By the way, I just published another short story (~2700 words) on Amazon, this one not game related (more of a science fiction/contemporary fantasy). Here's the link if anyone is interested:

Thanks everyone!

I'd love to read it and post a review. Gotta turn on the Kindle sometime this week.

Speaking of video game books besides stuff like Master of Doom, Opening the xbox, etc
A guy from the retro league podcast has a short ebook about working in gaming retail in the mid 90s, its a fun read. Its called "My Loser Phase: Tales of Video Game Retail 1992-1997"

Didnt mean to hijack your thread OP.

No problem, looks kind of interesting. But I have to say, that book cover is TERRIBLE. That seems to be all too common for self-published ebooks.

If you should happen to get another code or someone else doesn't redeem theirs I'd be glad to get one and read and review for you. Winding Down seems interesting, just wish there was more of an actual description or some reviews for me to go on, but for .99 I can probably splurge on it.

Thanks for all the interest. I just sent out a couple more codes... I'm going to continue sending out codes as I'm able, though they may not be strictly for "Postmortem." I kind of need some reviews for my other stories now too.

In fact, I just published another short story called "Present Perfect" that's a time-travel tale, though from a slightly different perspective than most such stories. Here's a link:

Also, please note that for each story, you can click on the cover on the product page to get a short sample and see if it appeals to you. Thanks again everybody!
