SEGA ANNOUNCES VIRTUA FIGHTER 5 FOR XBOX 360

Premiere Fighting Game Franchise Makes First Appearance on Microsoft’s Next Generation Videogame Console

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (December 21, 2006) – SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. today announced that the highly anticipated arcade fighting game, Virtua Fighter™ 5, will make its way onto the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system. Virtua Fighter™ 5 is scheduled for release on Xbox 360™ in North America and in Europe during late summer 2007. The game will also be available for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system on February 20th, 2007 in North America and will be available in Europe simultaneously with the system’s launch in March 2007.

“Those people lucky enough to have already played Virtua Fighter™ 5 will know that it’s laid the foundations to become the clear benchmark for fighting games on all next generation consoles”, said Matt Woodley, Creative Director, SEGA Publishing Europe Ltd. “Bringing Virtua Fighter™ 5 to the Xbox 360™ offers us a platform with power to handle the astonishing visuals, the complex and varied fighting styles of all the customisable characters and will undoubtedly put Virtua Fighter™ 5 into the hands of a gaming audience craving for a highly polished and credible fighting game.”

Virtua Fighter™ 5 features beautifully detailed stages from around the world where players face off in fast-moving martial arts battles against one of 17 characters. Two lively new characters join the elite group of fighters, adding two new unique fighting styles for players to try and master. With more skill and strategy than ever before, players are also given the opportunity to learn and employ the new “Offensive Move” technique to take down their opponents from different angles, adding a new dimension to the game and something for both new and old fans to master. Virtua Fighter™ 5 also includes the ability to customise characters by selecting from four base costumes and a wide range of unlockable accessories and earnable items. As players win more tournaments they will not only earn costumes and accessories, but also prizes and in-game money that will allow them to buy items from the in-game shop.

“The Virtua Fighter™ series from SEGA has one of the most prestigious histories in video games,” said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of global marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “It’s a franchise that has grown an army of loyal fans both in arcades and on consoles worldwide, and is consistently rated extremely high by the media. Fighting game fans have been hungry for Virtua Fighter™ 5 and we can now proudly deliver this game with SEGA to Xbox 360 gamers around the world.”

Developed by the highly renowned Tokyo based development team, AM R&D Development No.2, Virtua Fighter™ 5 for the Xbox 360™ will be available across Europe and North America during late summer 2007.'

let me be the first to say HOLY fuckING SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now, just announce afterburner as well pleeeeez

Wow, this is a really big deal... I'm wondering how many other "exclusive" titles are going to rethink their alliance with Sony.

Hi, I would like to know where did you get your source from because I just went to to Sega' and Virtua Fighter 5 websites and it mentions nothing about the xbox 360. Just Playstation 3. I hope this is true though because I am not going to buy a PS3 just to play virtua fighter 5
Thank you Sega for saving me $600.
Just thought the same thing. Now if Namco brings Tekken to 360 I'm set.

Quote fixed.

I'm pretty surprised about this. Wow. Still picking up the PS3 version, but it's great news for people who didn't want to drop $600 to play this game.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Let hope Seaga includes online play.

Now give me Metal Gear!
They had better. Online gaming is what seperates Xbox/Xbox360 from everyone else.

I'm not sure that they will... Sega and Namco both seem pretty adamant about waiting on online play until it can be reliable. Getting... really, any lag in a fighting game pretty much kills it, so I doubt that Sega will put online play in a VF anytime soon.

Lag really kills a lot of fighters, from what I've played on Xbox & 360, SF 3rd Strike and DOA work pretty well for me.

Pretty well isn't good enough for VF, unfortunately. Especially with fighters like Akira, getting any lag will make it impossible to pull off moves reliably.

I know it won't work for VF5 but they could have the trainer character uploaded for other people to download. VF4 was pretty precise in hit detection while DOA and Tekken are more of the button masher type.
What puzzles me about that article is it doesn't mention a release for Japan.
I don't think they'll release it in Japan considering the 360 doesn't sell at all over there.

It looks like an North America / Europe release only.

??

Wouldn't that be a quite a good reason to release it over there and sell some units?

They'll probably do some online leaderboards. At the most they'll do ghost character uploads, which would be kick ass. I would like online play, but I definitely couldn't play VF on the connection I have.

I think I'm picking up a 360 the day after Christmas with the Gamestop deal (have credit there) and this is really good news.

EDIT: I think this is showing that the tides are turning a bit and I think we will see more of this in the future.

The GTA and Assassin's Creed stuff was significant, but I honestly think this is the biggest sign so far that the 360 is a legitimate contender for "#1" this time around. Something totally locked in to the Playstation in the past suddenly jumps on the fence. Only Devil May Cry or MGS4 itself could surpass this, as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, and for my opinion on this news, see the guy in my signature, which was pretty much my reaction when I read it.

As far as online play - this may be the one fighter I'm willing to give a free pass to. I know the developers don't want it, so I can understand it not being in there (unless they changed their mind). Ghosts/leaderboards is enough for me. Sure, I'd want it to be in there, but I understand why if it is not.

Now, we must have an arcade stick and/or better pad. This is getting ridiculous.

Yeah, they could be creative and integrate LIVE really well without actually having on line vs if they can't make it work right.

Teamxbox also has the story. http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/12476/SEGA-Announces-Virtua-Fighter-5-for-Xbox-360/

And nice sig Apossum, Myazaki is awesome...

Amazing.... and so it begins.

Sega bringing over one of their biggest franchises, which was a PS2 exclusive all of last gen, will definitely get other developers to take notice. I hope.

I'm not even that big of a Virtua Fighter fan but I will still pick the game up when it comes out to show support.

Microsoft is going to support this like crazy... if the 360 version sells more (lots more) than the PS3 version, this could be one of those turning points in the console wars.

I would like online play for this, but either way ill probably still pick it up. It is nice to see what was mostly a ps2 exclusive series head to 360, just as it is nice to see ninja gaiden heading to ps3.
Exclusives are nice to a certain extent, but i wish 3rd party developers would share the love more often.
??

relase it months after the Ps3 version isnt going to help in japan

Merry Christmas, Kaz, Ken, and Phil!

It's just one punch to the nuts after the other, ain't it?

I just hope that this means that the Soul Calibur series goes back to 'multiplatform' status. For once, I'm optimistic.

Coming soon...the FF XIII announcement!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved VF4, and now I don't have to spend $600 to play VF5!

This will open up the door to other games as well IMO. I expect a DMC4 announcement soon following the same thing. Game releases on PS3 in spring, 360 late summer.
??

I agree, though they could make it make it region-free at the very least.

So what's the next exclusive to get its cherry popped next?

MGS4? FF13? DMC? Tekken?

Virtua Fighter was one of the only reasons I wanted a PS3 along with Metal Gear. I plan on getting this on release day as I really love VF and it is the only 3D fighting series I really care about. Can't wait to start beating the shit out of my friend with the Bryant's.

AMAZING!

Such exciting news. Another formerly "PS3 Only" title comes to 360. This is such good news for everyone invovled. More people playing VF is never a bad thing. (although expect the game to tank in america.. again)

Now all we need is MGS4 and FFXIII and PS3 has lost all interest.

I don't think it will tank... the only other 3D fighter on the 360 for the last year has been DoA 4... I think alot of 360 owners who casually enjoy fighters are ready for something new, and if MS / Sega hypes this up correctly it can do awesome.

Nice! My buddy has been on the bench forever about getting a 360 because he really wants VF5. This will totally seal the deal. Thanks, Sega!
