As a recently unemployed game designer, I decided I would spend my downtime writing and talking about game industry issues, design, technique, etc. (Maybe you've seen me on Kotaku?) I wrangled in my fellow unemployed co-worker/former classmate into a video podcast because sometimes it's just easier to yammer on than write/edit sensible paragraphs.

Please check out our video podcast at http://vidzone.blip.tv or on GameTrailers. We aim to put our experience and Masters degrees to work by discussing the thought process behind game creation rather than being just another fanboy show with game reviews or about why X is better than Y. I also write in my blog at http://www.vidzone.net/blog. All comments, suggestions, criticisms, hate-mail are welcome, of course.

So far, I've thought of discussing:
  • the importance of buying new
  • the "hardcore" as a niche audience
  • the value of playing "bad" games
  • evolution of social gaming
  • why people play online
  • asynchronous competition
  • and maybe some free lessons from grad school

Below is our first episode: DLC. We talk about value-add, downloadable cheats, switching costs, turning a profit on second-sales, a Burnout Paradise case study, propose a subscription model, and more. Yes, it's crazy long at nearly an hour, and I didn't bother to make any fancy motion graphics. We'll try to remedy both those issues with upcoming episodes.
