Who loves escort missions?

Better yet, can anyone name specific escort missions that worked well, perhaps one where the politician you have to protect kicked as much ass as you?

I like escort missions, because sometimes it is easy enough to stay alive yourself but it's fun to see if you can keep someone else alive too.

I hate them too. Why is the person that you're trying to protect always an idiot? Do they not value their own life and want to live? If someone is shooting you, take cover, run, fight back, do something, just don't keep plodding along into the bullets. And why do you have to start over if they die, lets just play the game with them dead, its their own fault.

It depends. Goldeneye kinda had one where you have to get yourself and Natalia out of prison and I consider that to be one of the best designed levels in a game.

But then you have Dynasty Warriors 5 where your supposed to protect Cao Cao and he jets off to the upper left hand corner of the map while your fighting off hundreds of enemies for like 20 minutes without saving only to have him to die just before you meet up with him.

I can't stand escort missions because the fucking person you escort always gets in the way like when playing Mercenaries. But I have to give the developer of this one credit at least they do put some type of fight but die to easy.

Resident Evil 4.

Ashley was intelligent and a joy to have around. She ducks when you point a gun at her, stays put when you tell her to, and lets you know when she's in danger. Never once did she EVER get in the way... I was very worried about getting RE 4 when I heard you had to protect her, but they pulled it off very well.

Many times I was able to turn around and cap a cult member that was right behind her because she would duck and let me take the open shot.

In any other game with an escort, they'd probably just stand there and I'd shoot them.

Dude, play Half-Life 2.

People following you will act like real humans and take cover, provide covering fire, and actually fight back and do serious damage.
which games are you guys playing with hookers in them?
That would be basically any Grand Theft Auto game in existence.

The merchant escort in Fable just plain sucked

Also, I think Ashley was immune to your weapons in RE4 (bullets for sure, maybe not explosives). Her AI is smart enough, though, that I didn't notice until my 2nd time through. I was up on the second floor when the cult members were carrying her away, and I totally put a rifle round through her calf. Later, I tested her with shotgun blast. Not a scratch. Even without partial invincibility, she is definitely one of the best game VIPs to escort.

It definitely comes down to AI. Or, at the very least, predictability. Farah in PoP:SOT wasn't too bad because the bad guys were slow and she was slow. It did feel dumb that she would just stand still and take scimitar blades to the face, but at least I knew what I had to do and the game never really screwed me over.

Making escorts secondary objectives doesn't really help, because I always end up trying for those anyway. If it's optional and frustrating, it's still frustrating.

Guild Wars' escort missions aren't that bad as that person helps you fight instead of whining about being attacked every 3 seconds. On a few missions though, we nicknamed the person who you escorting "Sir Suicide" as he doesn't wait up for you and dives into battles he can't win alone.

She wasn't immune, I shot her several times on purpose and killed her. The round through the calf could have easily been the collision detection picking up the Ganados instead of her. The Shotgun blast, you must have missed her.

Making her invincible would be idiotic. Just make her killable and smart.

I was digging Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits until an escort mission where the woman you were escorting would just walk headlong into a group of like four enemies and die in one turn. Then I decided I never wanted to play that game again.
