Okay, here is the story. We got a wireless router, and I figure nobody would hack it or anything, so I left the password as the default.

So last week this guy is sitting in his pickup outside the house working on a computer, obviously using our connection. So I go outside and ask him about it, he admits it but drives off very quickly.

So I go to put a password on it, and the login has changed!
It used to be admin for both name & password (default), but that motherfucking cocksucker changed it!
Next time I see him I am going to pull his sorry ass out of that truck and beat him.

If any of you have a wireless router, change the login name and password immediately and add a password to the connection!

Don't let this happen to you!

o shoot :(..damn im sry 2 hear that, thx for the warning i used 2 leave it as default also..but after a nice chastising my my IT friend..changed it..
hopefully u find the scumbag..
o yea..BUMP..since theres a lesson in the OP

You should be able to set to the factory default if you have to. Its not neccessarily important to put a password and login on your router, just encrypt your connection

I feel sorry for you and that guy in the truck was just mean. Though, everyone should change their passwords and stuff from the defaults.
I second this notion.

:rofl::rofl:
I started laughing as soon as I got to the part where he said "Okay, here is the story. We got a wireless router, and I figure nobody would hack it or anything, so I left the password as the default."

 I only made it to, "Okay, here is the story. We got a wireless router, and I figure nobody would hack it or anything."

I noticed the neighbors of my friend had a wireless access point I could access from her house. I was able to login in to the router, but I never changed anything, I'm not that mean.

You can set everything to factory default usually by holding down the reset switch about ~15-60 seconds depending on the router you have.

Does the brand of router matter?

Also, how did you change the settings?

fyi, there's people that drive around the neighborhood with a little device that tells them when there's a wireless connection available. if they find one that's open, they use it to download kiddie porn. it gets traced back to the house with the connection and the router, not the pedophile that drives around the neighborhood with his laptop. so if anyone were to get busted, it would be the household, and the pedophile will just cruise another neighborhood for a connection.

in short, make sure you're wireless router is secured.

It's called Wardriving

did you think he was making you milk and cookies, if someone said they were using my connection from a laptop i would pull their ass out of the car right there... but then again wireless sucks

I lived in a condo untill about 3 months ago, and besides my wife and I, everybody was over the age of 75. So I knew that nobody would be hacking into our network. We sold the condo and are in an apartment right now while we build a new house, and the first time I turned on the PC after moving in, I found 3 networks....and my router wasn't even plugged in. Connected to all of them too.

You, sir, now can no longer be called one of CAG's smarter users. :dunce:

Bravo. :applause:

I mean, go ahead, take a bow for showing us how well you planned this one out. :applause:

Seriously though wireless routers aren't secure even when you change the password, enable wep, and put on mac filtering. There are workarounds for all the security you could put up. Changing a password and enabling wep might slow them down but if they are persistent they could get in. Someone could be using your internet right now, some wardrivers use antennas that can connect to a network from another block. The only way to protect from wardriving is to use wired.

Dude, I'd think changing a password would be a pretty standard desicion. People are stupid. 'Specially with computers.

Example 1: Ya know the old 'press any key' gag? My BF's dad did it. And got mad when my BF's sister didn't tell him which button the any key was.

Example 2: BF's dad again- trying to make more room on the computer, he found a big file that hadn't been updated for a year, and got rid of it. My BF comes in just in time to see 'Deleting Windows XP' before the screen goes black.

Example 3: I get a call from my friend. She just got Comast broadband, but it's not working and she's pissed. I ask what's wrong. She says she finished the install, but there's no program Icon on the desktop to start it, like with AOL. I ask if it comes with a webrowser or if it's just an ISP. The response: ".......huh?" I explain, she boots up Internet explorer, and everything's just fine.

My point is, it's very easy for a stupid person to think a wireless connection means they can log in anywhere, mistake your router for theirs, and change your settings to theirs becuase they think their system magically went back to default. Or not realize they need a special connection of their own at all, and just think they have to reset their password once in awhile.

I will admit to wireless idiocy... my friend brought over a laptop and looked up directions to a restruant, then I borrowed it to check this board. It was only after I'd been using it for an hour or so that she mentioned we were stealing someone else's wireless connection. I didn't know! Whoever has that connection is lucky I don't download stuff...

But that isn't funny... ergo, neither are you...

Who ever called him that?

Not only should you have changed the login password, but you should have required a password to log into your network at minimum. I use both password protection and MAC address filtering.

I knew the risk and all, I just figured the odds of someone hacking it were pretty low, and that the 5 minutes setting it up would be better spent playing video games.

It one of those things you say you are going to do tommorrow, like changing the batteries in the smoke detector, and you end up putting it off until the house catches on fire.

Not only am I leeching internet right now from my neighbor while on vacation here at a house on the beach, but after reading this thread, I also accessed his Linksys router. He too didn't password protect it as surprisingly most don't. I just typed in the web address "192.168.1.1" and used "admin" as the password and I'm in. I'm not a complete ass though. I'm not gonna password it or change any settings. I'm just bored and thought I'd test out his security. I just set up a wireless network at home a week or so ago and made sure I passworded and encrypted as soon as I set it up.

Reset your router, immediately change your password, use 128bit encryption with shared key, and only allow trusted stations on your network (also called MAC address filtering). Security is not a game.

Actually, his post was the only thing in this thread that made me laugh. so HA. *shrug*

I've had my wireless router for over a year and just changed the default settings a few weeks ago so that it has a really long password. I had trouble the other night when my laptop couldn't get onine, but was connected. I looked in the available wireless networks and someone had a belking 54g wireless network and I did hear a car or truck drive by then the network dissapeared. I had to unplug the power from my router, plug it back in to get online. The other network had dissapeared though. The thing is very few people out here even have cable let alone a computer with wifi and internet.

Same Here, The first thing you should do is change the password after setting up the router.

Sonce I'm not the greatest with Wireless Routers, how would one be able to tell who is leeching off there wirelss router? If its not WEP encrypted, and possible to connect to an open network, can I see exactly how many computers/laptops are connected at that time?

Yes, it should show who's using the router when you access it. Generally, the router address is 192.168.1.1 and the pass is 'admin' without quotes and the lastest routers show a configurable GUI menu interface and it should be showing who is on the client table.
