Reasoning: America was founded in English. We should conduct our country in said one language. No public funds should be wasted on people who refuse to learn said language. Conducting government in multiple languages would add a second tier to bureaucracy and that would be horribly inefficient. Streamlining language is the simplest way to make things more economical as well. With that if a private corporation wants to use their advertising budget or other private revenues to appeal in a foreign language then I do not oppose it. Just don't waste my money on a language I don't speak because a few people would feel better about it.

Answers in green.

Just to add, having more than one official language can only benefit Americans if they are willing to embrace it. Nothing wrong with learning different languages. As of right now, English is the official language simply because that is what all documents and official business is done in. However, I have no problem with other languages being added. I don't like the idea of public funding for anything other than school, but private funding should never even be an issue.
English is not the official language of America.
Because most people speak one language does not make it so.
For the sake of argument...

Would you argue Japanese isn't the official language in Japan? German isn't in Germany? Spanish isn't in Spain or Mexico? French isn't France? Portuguese isn't in Portugal or Brasil? Chinese isn't in China? The populations of those countries aren't as homogenized as you might think.

The list can go on and on.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_language

An official language is a language that is given a special legal status in a particular country, state, or other territory. Typically a nation's official language will be the one used in that nation's courts, parliament and administration.

In that regard there is no reason why English AND Spanish can't both be official languages.
