I played the original AC back in '08 and loved it. Played through it in a weekend. Started 2, but for whatever reason stopped. Now I have Brotherhood, Revelations, 3, 4, Rogue, and Unity in the backlog and my game sharing buddy will probably buy Syndicate soon. I wonder if I own but haven't played more AC or more CoD games.

AC is probably my second favorite game series (after Mass Effect). I have to disagree with starting at AC4, because AC2 is a phenomenal game. The Renaissance Italy environment was the best of all the AC games I've played. I think it's a bit of a shame to skip AC1, because you won't have the experience for all the back-references to Altair in the AC2 trilogy. But I do agree that AC1 isn't nearly as good as the AC2 trilogy. The end of the AC2 trilogy (Revelations) is a bit weaker than the others and gets somewhat bogged down in too many additional game mechanics, but it's still decent. I enjoyed AC3 but it's just OK and is definitely skippable, though you will miss the end of Desmond's story.

 
My Dad should not be allowed to have an online account.  He buys the most inane shit.  It is like he is a publisher's wet dream who needs to own every piece of digital content a game has.  Drives me nuts.

 
For those who care about such things, King's Quest will have an "additional story epilogue" exclusive to its The Complete Collection. Getting the 1st chapter (which is being offered for free) and later buying the rest of the chapters will lock you out of this bonus epilogue.

I hate these kind of practices and thought others might too.

Haven't played Revelations or Rogue. Revelations came out a time where I had too much to play and I had chose Unity over Rogue. I do still have both and plan to play them. Rogue soon actually. Also yea with AC games, I need a break after finishing one. I can't play one, beat it, then jump straight to another, got to take some months off.

I think you're fine skipping AC1.  I really like that game, but will admit 2 is a better game, even if the story wasn't quite as good for me (eagle vision at the end of AC1 sent me on a google-fest that had me excited at the possibilities of where the story could go).  I also liked AC3, even though most people hate it.

Brotherhood is entirely skippable, but I do love the brotherhood aspect.  The ending of the game and the final 2 missions are f*****g stupid, though.  Revelations was so  terrible I couldn't even finish it (story was bad).  Didn't like the sea missions in 3 so I didn't play 4.

everyone has different favorites and contradict each other lol

I guess I'll play through them eventually and make my own list to help out future ACers haha

 
I have loved all of the AC games I've played, but I feel like everyone is right in saying you can skip 1. I would maybe read a plot summary of at least the modern day stuff so you won't be totally lost in 2, Brotherhood, Revelations and 3 (if you play it)

I must be in the minority though. I enjoyed 3. The "intro" parts were too long for sure, but I enjoyed the gameplay changes and the setting of it.

Black Flag and Rogue were pretty good too, imo. I love pirate themed anything though, so my opinion of Black Flag might be biased.

If I had an Xbox One, I'd have an opinion of Unity and Syndicate because I'm positive I'd have played them already by now.

 
I loved Brotherhood, imo it's the perfect "classic" AC game with the perfect balance of everything. It felt like an expansion of AC2 for sure, but it fixed so many problems AC2 had. I thought the world was more interesting, it had a neat story and a great villain, and I actually loved the ending. I was just disappointed with what Revelations did with the ending of Brotherhood. It took a shovel to get my jaw off the ground after seeing the Brotherhood ending so I had to start Revelations immediately after, and they barely make mention of the Brotherhood events unless you play the crappy Portal-esque DLC, and even then it's still very much under-rug-swept.

AC1 I suppose is skippable. It's a good game, but feels like a tech demo compared to AC2. They had a great idea for a game and didn't do enough with it. Once you get to the second chapter, you've basically played the whole game, since every mission is copy-and-paste, you're doing the EXACT same thing over and over. But it was cool at the time.

I would have liked Revelations more if it were a sequel to AC1. It wasn't bad, but it felt like such a step down from Brotherhood that I was scratching my head the whole time. They went from a huge open world with several cities and hidden towers, to one city, and it's a pretty bland city to look at. The story was also a letdown.

AC3 was a great concept but doesn't feel like an AC game. And the open world takes way too long to traverse, even with fast travel. That game was a chore to play. That was the only AC game up to that point that I didn't care to even get close to 100% on. Once I finished the main story and DLC, I put it away forever. Liberation was a much, much, much better game, but went unnoticed since it was a Vita exclusive at the time.

Once again, I really need to try Black Flag. I was so depressed that they dropped the Desmond storyline that I never really gave it a shot. I shut the game off for good as soon as I got my ship and started the sailing missions. Without the series' outer storyline driving me to continue playing, I just had no motivation to continue anymore. I also own Rogue, but was told it's like Black Flag 2, so I never even booted it up. I own Unity and never played it because my OCD tells me I have to play games in order.

I am not sure if it was widely known about the modern day part of AC but when I played AC1 I was completely clueless it existed.  When the screen started pixelating and it cuts to the Animus and Desmond I was so completely lost.  It was one of those reveals you rarely get to experience fresh and it hooked me on the AC series.  I wish the outside the Animus stuff ended up more compelling but whatever.

 
Just out of curiosity, how "out of the loop" would I be if I were to purchase Telltale's The Walking Dead Michonne series? She's my favorite character from the show/comics. Naturally I'm curious.

I've read many of the comics, but I don't think I've read up to the point where this series of games takes place.

Agreed, Bioshock and Halo 3 alone make 2007 my favorite year for gaming. No other year comes close imo. Except for 1998 maybe.

Just wanted to say Wolf Among Us was one of the best purchases I've made for a game in months. It was free too with it being a Gold freebie, makes it even sweeter. If you haven't checked it out yet you should since it's going away in less than 48 hours (for free anyway). Not a long game at all and you get so engrossed in it like marathoning a TV show you'll lose track of time quickly. Love, love, love games that give you decision making power with multiple paths and outcomes plus dialogue wheel is an additional perk, especially since all options have voiced replies. Great game all around, especially if you like mysteries and noire elements. Like I said not long either, you can always delete it once done and dl it back later if you want.

If you haven't checked it out yet you should since it's going away in less than 48 hours (for free anyway). Not a long game at all and you get so engrossed in it like marathoning a TV show you'll lose track of time quickly. Love, love, love games that give you decision making power with multiple paths and outcomes plus dialogue wheel is an additional perk, especially since all options have voiced replies. Great game all around, especially if you like mysteries and noire elements. Like I said not long either, you can always delete it once done and dl it back later if you want.

yea wolf among us really surprised me. I pretty much just got it after how much I loved the walking dead season 1. Didn't know anything about the fables storyline (let alone it even existed) and it was alot of fun. I think it still has some of the funner/quicker quick time moments. pretty sure a sequel is coming but telltale has been pretty damn busy ha

I think walking dead season 3 is out next which I can't complain about it :D

Telltale's Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us are amazing. I'm currently playing thru their Back to the Future game, but it's a bit rough. I need a guide to make it thru as I always seem to get stuck. You can totally tell this was before their "TWD success." Let's not even get into Jurassic Park: The Game *shudders*

They have over 250 employees, so I'm sure they can handle the new games they got coming like Batman, TWD Season 3, GoT Season 2 and that Marvel game....plus 7 Days to Die, even though they're publishing not developing it.

ME is my favorite game franchise of all time. ME1 is my favorite though. It had the best soundtrack, best version of the Citadel, and I loved exploring the planets. I was actually disappointed after playing ME2 considering the hype it got. They may have improved the combat system in 2 and 3, but 1 just oozed charm.

Obviously the only good choice here is choosing the franchise known for terrific storytelling filled with interesting and likeable characters and long fulfilling campaigns that give you months and months of enjoyment
