Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Why didn't you tell me what I wanted to hear???

Fine. Purchased. Bleh.

Now... do I go ahead and fire up the ol' 360 or wait for BC?
We'll, if it makes you feel any better, the Mass Effect DLC is easily some of the highest quality DLC I have played to date and well worth the full MSRP. So if you can get it on sale, its absolutely worth it.

I hated to spend full price on Limbo, play 2 hours to complete it, then never touch it again. I hope there is replay value, or I hope it goes on sale in the next few months. Surely after their didie hardans stop buying, they'll cut they rest of us a deal...? I'm not really into horror games, but Limbo was right on the edge, leaving lots to the imagination. INSIDE, with zombies dropping in & out of everywhere, seems to be somewhat of a different tone (it could be completely different, but I hope it's not blatantly scary, or trying to fit in the horror game 'genre'). The tone of Playdead's initial Xbox entry was what made it good (not great :p).
I hear you. I suck at puzzle games so the game has already last me over three hours but I saw Cheapy beat it around 5 hours and a lot of people are beating it around that time despite howlongtobeat showing around 3ish for most people. I don't know well the replay value is outside of the collectible/secret areas as I have only found a few. If you've played Limbo then you know what to expect from INSIDE in terms of gameplay, It's too much different but I like the setting and the graphical artwork a lot more. Some games might be 10-15+ hours long but how much of it is filler? I agree that $20 is a bit steep for INSIDE, but at the same time I don't feel like a single minute has been wasted and It's definitely going to be my GOTY contender if the second half plays just as well.

I'm sure it will go on sale for $10-$15 after a few months it has been out, and in that case I'd recommend it to anyone who liked Limbo or wants a taste of a potential GOTY nominee. It has a 92% on metacritic after 66 reviews and is only trailing Uncharted 4 for the highest rated game released this year so far. On gamerankings It hasn't taken into effect all It's reviews yet but was just a half % behind Uncharted 4.

Your comment got me thinking. You know how in the Settings you can check for OS updates and choose to apply them. For people who don't have their XB1's set to Instant On, there needs to be a feature that lets you click and it will go through all the games in your library (digital and physical) and show which ones have updates. You can then choose which ones to apply, or choose to apply all of them. Like the way it works on Android devices now.
Not sure if it was mentioned yet, but in yesterday's preview update they added an "Updates" section to my games and apps. It scans all your games and shows you which ones need updates and you can choose whichever ones you want to download.

Yeap and when it works It's amazing. Basically removing the need for instant on mode and save some of your electricity bill.

They are also adding a feature to remove DLC from your hard drive for games you no longer own. Been a long time coming.

The 2nd half is even better. I wont post any spoilers, but it has one of the best twists I have ever seen from an Indie game. IMO, its well worth the $20. I can't speak for others, but I don't think a game should be judged on just the time it takes to complete it. As you mentioned, a lot of games have a TON of filler content that adds a lot of low quality gaming hours to its total completion time. Inside is pure gold from the very first frame until the very last frame. Easily the most enjoyable 4 hours I have spent with an indie game since Limbo. And I definitely plan on going back and playing it at least 1 more time. So I will get at least 7-8 hours of game time at the very minimum. Its my GotY right now.

That's the Smartglass feature, iirc they added it to the Director's Cut and did the same thing as the WiiU tablet pad. You can't actually "buy" it.

If you're checking previous Games with Gold, you can buy them so you can access them if your Gold expires.
Where do I get the directors cut then?

I couldn't imagine not using instant on. I love that I can fall asleep or walk away from playing a game and then come back, power the console back on and pick up exactly where I left off in a game. Its one of my favorite new hardware features of this generation. The automatic updates are really irrelevant to me. Its being able to power my console back up and pick up exactly where I left off in a particular game that makes the feature so amazing.

The DLC feature is something I had actually mentioned before so I'm happy to see it implemented.

Need a non-biased opinion.  I missed the Assassins Creed Syndicate Gold Edition two weeks ago when it was on sale for 31.99 on the PSN network.  I did not immediately realize what a huge price cut that was.  It is now about $5 more on xbox live.  My questions are (1) is the gold edition worth the extra $15 over the standard disc edition? and (2) does anyone know of any significant performance differences between the ps4 an xbox one versions?   I'm assuming the psn version will be 32 again on black friday but I will likely play it before then.  Thanks in advance.

Finally. A feature that makes logical sense! Now to bug them about an OS level option to disable vibration and set inversion across all games....

If you actually want the DLC for a particular game, its always best to go with the gold, GOTY, ultimate versions, or whatever else they decide to call them. You usually wind up saving at least $30. As to whether or not the DLC is worth it for Assassins Creed Syndicate, I thought so. I thought all of it was good, but I really liked the Jack the Ripper content. As to the difference between the PS4 and Xbox One versions, that I have no idea. I always go with Xbox for 3rd party games as I vastly prefer the Xbox controller. So someone else will have to chime in on the actual performance differences between the two versions. I certainly didn't notice any problems with the Xbox One version.

I really appreciate the Ultimate Game Sale, after Kmart discontinued the video game section, those marketers needed a spot to land. It was just really nice of Microsoft to give them a home in working on the digital Xbox sales.

Kidding aside, it is just like any sale, some things are good prices and some are not. It all depends on how much you value a game and if you want it digitally. I do think calling it the Ultimate sale is a bit too much though, the Fairly Decent Summer Sale would be more fitting.

So I found myself watching a little gameplay from Rogue Legacy on YouTube and I do think I missed out on it when it was on sale, so if it goes back on sale I may snatch it up.

Question though, is the game treated by the dev like other PC-first games?  As in, the PC version is always more updated/better loved than the console versions, or is there no difference?

Thank you for your reply. I also prefer the xbox one controller (as does my 9 year old son with whom I game share - albeit not for games that are too violent). His friends sadly only have the ps4 so he usually wants me to purchase digital games for the ps4. This is a game though that would be for me (as opposed to us) so I only cared if the performance was significantly worse on the xbox one. I managed to find this guy's video. He doesn't seem to have any agenda in selling one system over the other. Thanks again.

Super recommendation time.

I never heard of Dungeon the Endless until this sale. Looked into it and thought it looked fun for under $10 especially. I booted it up last night and was confused as hell. I turned it off and went back to Overwatch haha

Then my buddy got on and we tried it together and we didn't even realize four hours passed. o_O I should have gone to bed when he got off but I decided I want to play it MORE. It is insanely fun and a great co-op game. Super addicting because each time you think, okay one more door.

For a brief idea of the game for those that do not know it is a hybrid tower defense, dungeon crawling rogue-like. You start off crashed and you have your Crystal from the ship that you must protect. You begin on the bottom floor and must make your way all the way up. To do so you open doors and explore. Turns are registered by doors opened, each time a door is opened you gain however many resources you should as well as cooldowns for abilities and time for research. Certain rooms have build nodes, some are filled with monsters, some have a merchant, random resources and so much more. One of the 'so much more' is additional characters to recruit. You can have up to four with you at any given time and can dismiss ones if you no longer want them. Each character is the unlocked to choose from the get go once you either make it to the top or survive three floors with them.

The core of the experience however hangs upon the balanced use of the resources. Industry, Science, Food and Dust.

Industry is used primarily to build pretty much anything.

Science is used to research new and improved modules (generators to produce additional resources/turrets of which there are tons of variety with Support, Offensive and Defensive ones)

Food can be consumed to heal as well as stored up and used in bulk to level up your characters.

Dust controls how much light resources you have which gives you the power to light rooms.

All of that seems a bit simple but in practice it really becomes a balancing act. All of those things are largely self explanatory except for the Dust. The game, if you had not assumed is procedurally generated and the rooms you find then are random each time. A constant though is the system behind the lighting. Light can only be given to rooms connected to a room already with power, with your crystal room always being the first powered. Each room that you have lit is a room that monsters will not spawn in and so early on if you open a couple doors and light them all then the only place new monsters will spawn from is when opening doors because naturally those new rooms can be filled with them and are dark to start off. There are some rooms that are self powered as well. All of this use of light adds a huge layer of strategy to the game because not only are you deciding all of the other stuff with your previous resources and turret management but also which doors to open and how you want them lit to best set up enemy spawn points.

Each floor you can explore completely (and it informs you once all doors have been opened on a floor) but the main point is to find the exit. Once you find the exit you need to have one of your characters grab the crystal and make its way (more slowly while holding it of course) to the exit. As soon as you grab your crystal however endless waves begin coming from all the dark areas. Here you can see some extra strategy with light then as well because if you do not have any dark rooms, then no monsters can spawn. Or if you set up your dark rooms away from the path to the exit you can buy yourself time to run and so on. Once the crystal is at the exit you can leave, though you should probably wait until everyone is in the exit, otherwise they are left on the level below and are killed.

The elevator ride up to the next level displays your stats and there is unique dialogue that occurs between members of your party. Once you reach the next level everything from the previous level stays with you (what you have researched, character inventory, resources, resources gained per turn) all except your dust. Dust is an extremely finite resource compared with the others and as said before must be managed accordingly (you gain Dust by killing enemies sometimes and finding it in rooms). Now you begin the same process for exploration and keep on doing so with the ultimate goal to reach the top and be able to exit.

That ended up being a long overview/review of the game but it still isn't enough to explain it all. It is worth noting as well that it has not only has high replayability due to the randomly generated dungeons but also you can earn a bunch of characters and by playing through the game certain ways you unlock new pieces of the ship to explore through each time with unique modifiers that seem to drastically change how you approach your strategy. For added incentive the Achievement list then reflects all of these unique and clever ways to play the game so those achievement hunters out there this is certainly a rewarding game as well.

Phew. Lots of words.

Go buy Dungeon of the Endless.

: )

I actually went looking for a video on this game and when it finished YouTube made me watch some Rogue Legacy videos by the same guy.

Sorry the bad formatting, on mobile. Syndicate received overall positive reviews, it's more AC if you like it steampunk. The dlc Jack the Ripper was not as favorably reviewed. If you really like AC is wait for another sale on the dlc.

Cheers!

I'm really happy, that means people will stop being annoying with RDR and will move onto the next game.

Skyrim gets an HD remaster. BioShock games too. What's next?

hopefully ME2-3 because that's what I wanted after FNV and South Park

Light can be given to rooms with power already, with your crystal room always being the first powered.

: )
Jesus! If I wasn't playing this game with you last night, I'd assume you work for the developer....LOL what an essay. But like Broly said, definitely worth getting this game. It's hard to put into words, and your first, second, maybe even third time will be weird...but once you get the hang of it, you'll be hooked.

That was a long, but super enjoyable read. Your enthusiasm for the game definitely came across. Will definitely check it out now.

Your essay reminded me -- didn't there used to be someone who would post essays here once in a while? He'd gather his thoughts and comments from the whole week and then write a super lengthly post. I wonder what happened to him....

Or find a copy of the Gold edition at Target and PM to BB. (the vanilla and gold are the same DPCI at Target, so when they pull it up on the ipad it should pull up the $20 listing at BB)

Now that RockStar is on board with BC, I do hope this means GTA IV comes eventually. LA Noire, too.
That would be nice, but i'm more hopeful RDR BC is related to a Red Dead new game announcement in the near future. Can't hurt to have a little good buzz going about the franchise right before you drop a big reveal...

Okay, seriously. What is the "twist" in Inside that people are talking about? I beat it and watched the secret ending on Youtube and I wouldn't call anything I saw a twist. Just weird.

Is it the secret ending? That you were essentially controlling the main character the same way he controlled other people? Because I didn't find that surprising at all. I was assuming that's what the normal ending was going to be

I did enjoy the atmosphere and puzzles, though.

Yeah, I'm probably going to be buying Dungeon of the Endless, too. Only a 25% discount turned me off initially, but that sounds like something I'd enjoy. I read a review or two of it but it didn't explain everything as clearly as Broly. Kudos!

I love all these BC games because it improves the brand of the X1 but honestly my 360 is still hooked up so I never get that excited for the new games.  I still play all my 360 games on the 360.

My 360 is still hooked up, too. Right next to my XB1. I still play it regularly (was playing ME3 last night, actually.)

But I just like playing everything on XB1 better. Try saying "Xbox record that" to your 360. Nothing happens.
