I don't understand this line of thinking, I love Halo games so I love that 343 is keeping it alive. Bungie was done with Halo so they moved on to Destiny. The alternative to having a studio like 343 carry the torch is to pull the plug on the series. If anyone would rather that happen then I would say that no one is forcing anyone to buy the new Halo games. Triple A games are getting more and more expensive to make so other revenue streams have to be created. I appreciate that 343 gives us all the maps and just has ppl pay for Rec packs if they want to. I think the new race and guns they added were a good addition to a franchise that needed new elements to stay relevant.

I loved Bungies Halo games and I love 343s Halo games and will continue to buy them and play them.

My friend and I play SC2 online and have had no problems at all. And he's in Japan right now, so this is one of the very few games where we actually don't have issues or major lag of some sort.

In for Pac-Man Museum finally. It's BC and I think I have all the other 360 Pac games. Also in for Naruto Season Pass, and I guess that's about it.

Even though they're repeat prices, I'd recommend a number of cheap Bamco titles, especially since some are BC.

There's Eternal Sonata, Pac-Man Ghostly Adventures 1 & 2, Soul Calibur 2 HD (BC), Soul Calibur 5, Tales of Vesperia, and if you missed them being free, Dark Souls and Tekken Tag Tournament, both of which are BC.

I'd recommend Naruto Storm Revolution if you're still stuck on 360, as it's technically the newest 360 entry (Storm 3 is better though) and the GameStop used price is absurd ($25ish).

true enough, they lost me when it was online only and then all the fiasco of selling a beta game full price then all the add ons to stretch out the game and make back some of the money activision and sony lost, plus bungie lost me when it wasnt xbox exclusive anymore and put sony as a priority

Ugh, I really want Pac-Man CE, which comes with the Museum compilation, but the Museum pack doesn't have individual achievements. For an arcade, high-score type game like PMCE, achievements add a lot to enjoying a game IMHO. Can anyone convince me otherwise?

As a recovered Gamerscore addict for wasted four years of his life and thousands upon thousands of dollars for 332,000GS, the best advice I can give is: just buy the game. They're SO much more fun when you play with the game in mind and not a worthless number that means nothing.

Agreed. Besides, has anyone not heard that Halo 5 is going to have a custom games browser? This changes the game completely and pretty much makes it as close to a perfect MP experience as we've had in a halo game. I used to put tons of time into custom games back in H2/H3 and I'm looking forward to doing this again in H5 whenever the browser releases. Now we just need old modes back like KoTH and Oddball.

Do you get a discount at the Microsoft store? I feel like that much gamerscore should at least get 10% off.
 
Return To Arkham coming on 10/21.

The new comparison trailer doesn't convince me to buy it on day one. I'll definitely pick it up at some point, but my October schedule is already packed with brand new games. I'm sure RTA will be $30 or less in no time.

Check the rewards program, you do actually get a discount depending on your gamerscore. I don't think it's 10% though. The highest tier is for 100k GS.

Yeah, it's so weaksauce I've never even bothered with it. I did get some freebies every now and then, but I was much happier to sell that account and move on with my life.

I flash my Gamerscore at Starbucks for free lattes all the time. It's a special program you have to sign up for. That's why that Stallion83 guy is never asleep and always playing.

 
fuck that, if games didn't have achievements they'd be boring as hell. You could play everything on the easiest setting and be done in a couple days. Achievements add value to your purchases by giving you miscellaneous tasks to complete, extending the playtime at the same time.

It only gets to be a problem when you're playing shit like Barbie's Treehouse and Bert and Ernies Ambiguously Gay Adventures solely for GS.

fuck that, if games didn't have achievements they'd be boring as hell. You could play everything on the easiest setting and be done in a couple days. Achievements add value to your purchases by giving you miscellaneous tasks to complete, extending the playtime at the same time.

It only gets to be a problem when you're playing shit like Barbie's Treehouse and Bert and Ernies Ambiguously Gay Adventures solely for GS.

Yeah, it's not just an arbitrary number. The achievements give you an extra layer of challenge and encourage you to play the game in different/interesting ways, like achievements for completing a game without killing anyone, or completing certain sections within a specific time limit (CoD4's "Mile High Club" was the most memorable for me due to the number of attempts, lol).

Sure I did, but sorry, achievements changed the game forever. Theres no going back. Like for example, I spent $30 on Doom. If it weren't for achievements, I'd have been done in 6-7 hours. Going for all collectibles and random tasks, I've gotten 20+ hours with still more to do. People always complain that companies charge too much for little content, but that's your fault if all you do is blast through a campaign and don't bother to put more effort into your game.

Gaming can be an expensive hobby, so I'm gonna try to do every possible thing to get my moneys worth.

It was overkill, for sure. But doing all the Riddler stuff got you the best ending in the game, so at least there was a purpose to it. You could always just say fuck it and YouTube it lol.

precisely this. When they are integrated well into a game, they extend and enhance my enjoyment of that game. I don't care what my overall gamerscore is, but I do enjoy being challenged to play games in ways that I wouldn't normally. After playing with Trophies and Achievements for so long, I noticed how much I missed them on my Wii U and I wish Nintendo had a similar system.

Hence, my original question about Pac-Man Championship Edition, I have a feeling achievements would keep me playing longer than I would normally.

A high score means you're really good at a game. A really high gamerscore means you've played a lot of one game.

I can see people enjoying them because they add challenges and replay value to games, but I'd still be playing without them

I can see, but I also see how they take away from you enjoying a game as well (see grinding kills using weapons and powers that suck). It all depends on the game of course, I just know I had more fun with something like BioShock Infinite after I gave up achievements than when I 100% it.
 
This ended up longer than expected so I'm spoilering for space. My thoughts on the 343/Bungie video.

We've been discussing that Halo video pretty much since it went up yesterday in a Bungie group I'm part of, made up of people mostly from the Halo 1 era or earlier. Everybody has a different opinion but the vast majority of our group doesn't like the 343 era stuff overall. As far as gameplay, 5 is generally considered to be a large step up from the disaster of 4, which is aided by all of the DLC being "free" and the new Forge being amazing. 4 had so many problems I could write for an hour and not cover anywhere near everything. We aren't all gameplay though, the story, art direction, overall EU, aesthetics of each faction, and more are all pretty widely discussed.

I don't know if I'd call what Halo has being doing "adapting". It certainly has been changing, with the known goal of aiming for a wider audience. Many of the new things added have been borrowed from other popular games though. UI changes (grenade indicators and the like), Aim Down Sights on every weapon, Sprint at all times, plus definite influence from Destiny in Halo 5...

While most of the big shooters do change some with every installment, I think Halo has changed it's core too much. All sprint all the time mean maps had be be made way bigger to accommodate it, which made longer range weapons ever more important. Halo 5 at least brought back map control based on weapon spawns for Arena, but the fact that 343 did away with it in 4 screamed that they didn't know what they were doing. Warzone is a clusterfuck that built on the ideas of 4 and amplified them to push REQ packs.

From the story angle I don't even know where to start, other than they went a vastly different direction than I think they should have, and where I believe Bungie would have too. If we were sticking with Master Chief he should have been in cryosleep for WAY longer, like decades, to better explain the massive changes in the UNSC. From technology, to a new wave of Spartans, to the complete aesthetic shift. Cortana could have already been either dead or more rampant if you see her right away, or believed dead but then discovered much like she was in 5. I can't believe that Gears 4 was willing to take this timeskip angle while Halo didn't have the balls.

I would say a new character focus would have been a good idea, but so far the only decent characters they've made were Lasky and Roland, and borderline maybe Vale and Locke. Many of their attempted "cool" characters have been hated, like Palmer and virtually every Spartan IV outside of Osiris. Personally I think Buck could have been a new lead if they wanted an old character but more relate-able than classic Chief.

All of that said, I still think Halo 5 (but not 4) is fun, but that it pales in comparison to the height of the Bungie era games.

Agreed. When I think of Dead Rising and the endless slog to kill all those zombies, I cringe. But I Platinum'd Rayman Origins and I felt a real sense of satisfaction and accomplishment because they were tough but fair and didn't force you to endlessly grind.

That's somewhat impressive to plat rayman but whats really impressive is beating evil within on akumu or getting seriously 2.0 on gears 2.

I think it would be tough for a company to give us the same experience we got in Halo 1. I remember going to my friends house and setting up 2 tvs upstairs and 2 tvs downstairs each with an Xbox and controllers so that no one could screen look. We would do CTF upstairs vs downstairs on hang em high etc and man it was a blast! I was a high school kid with a ton of time on my hands and lots of friends to play it with. 343 will never be able to recreate that time in my life that Bungie created so I have to look at these games differently in respect to the multiplayer.

Story wise I think your spot on, I don't care about any of the characters they have created, I'm lucky if I know there names.

Like I said before though, I still enjoy going back to the Halo world every couple years with a new experience so I'm glad 343 is keeping it alive.

I have heard that Destiny is actually really good now. I still just have the vanilla version but I know my nephew loves playing it and streaming it on Twitch.
