Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
[*]ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...

I've yet to beat the campaign despite this being my most played XB1 game. I'm down if you're okay watching cinematics. I beat the first few levels awhile back and don't remember the story so I would wanna watch the scenes.
No problem. I'm ready to go whenever you are. What's your GT?

Edit: Nevermind, found it in your profile. Let's play!

Thoughts -- Maybe this game is worth picking up now, or maybe it has been and I'm not hip to things?

Thoughts -- I'm getting more excited for this game, but I probably still won't keep the CE.  I hope my PC can run the Beta!

The list needs to be more specific. For example, Street Fighter is a horrible game. Street Fighter 2 is an amazing game. If I wasn't familiar with the series and wanted to play through the list, I would've played the first game and not even have tried the sequels

Why? The list is just one giant arguing point. It being so vague in what it hopes to achieve and "before growing up" can mean so much that the list is just an empty point for people to go on their page and bitch in their comments.

Plus in general forcing your childhood on your own children is just dumb.

I've thought about it, and here are three standout arcade memories for me:

My first exposure to arcade gaming - The closest corner store had a Super Mario Bros arcade machine, and there was this guy that was at least ten years older than me that was SO.GOOD. at the game that when he got to the dungeon levels he could defeat Bowser pretty much with his eyes closed.  He would beat Bowser with Mario's fire, then pound on the axe or whatever it is that sits behind Bowser with the fire until it almost faded out of existence, and then with 0 seconds left he would jump on it and end the level.  Sometimes if he were thirsty, he would beat Bowser and then just leave the game and go out and get a drink and talk to people in the store and then come back and jump on the axe.  There were a lot of us that would watch him, and no one would DARE touch the controls when he left.

My favorite experience - When the carnival would come to town they would bring a video game arcade.  One year they had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game, and me and my brother and sometimes other randos would just beat on that game for hours.  So many quarters...

My LEAST favorite experience - The arcade in the mall was holding a tournament for the Killer Instinct game, and I was really good with Fulgore.  I made it to the end of the tournament, so there were lots of people to witness this, and I was beating the crap out of my opponent.  I had him down to where I could execute my Ultra and I did the move, but apparently I did something wrong and then eased up on the game.  But since the Ultra didn't go off, I was so rattled that I eventually lost the match.  The current KI game is pretty good, but it won't be great until they incorporate Fulgore's combo finishers from that game.

The 101 video games kids should play before growing up

Here is the table of contents:

Thoughts -- I've played an embarrassingly small amount of these games...
Notes:
2. Yoshi. First off, none of the Yoshi games are amazing must play experiences in gaming. Second, which Yoshi game? Safari? Touch & Go?

21. Skylanders & 31. LEGO Dimensions. Are both toy-to-life cashgrabs must play games? Even the one that failed and was scrapped after 6 months?

38. TMNT. No. Turtles in Time on a emulator with infinite credits? Sure, but otherwise pass.

40. Star Fox. 4rlz? Maybe Star Fox 64 on mute (Do a barrel roll!), but definitely no to the original.

41. Mario Kart. Eh, the original isn't terrible, but 64 is where it really started coming together.

49. Forza & 58. Gran Turismo. Pick the newest one for a system you already own and marvel at the shininess.

47. Street Fighter. 2 is the money maker, pass on the original.

56. Madden NFL. Hmm. I do think one of these would be worth checking out, but who knows which one? Maybe if they iterated on the gameplay instead of creating all new engines and animations every year just for the sake of reinventing the wheel, again.

60. Final Fantasy. 4 (2 in the west) is a must play, but again the original is only interesting to see where the series started but not worth a full playthrough on its own merits.

I like that the only strategy game listed under that heading is Civ. I'm sure that's the only strategy title that's ever been worth playing.

My earliest game I think I saw/played was Atari Combat, but fondest early memories go to watching my dad play Legend of Zelda, fighting my brother in Karate Champ, and co-oping through Ikari Warriors, all for NES.

Really odd, sloppy list of "must-play" games. I assume the author means series and not individual games, because the original Final Fantasy or the NES Metroid don't beat out FF6 or Super Metroid, for example.

Feel free to keep these memory lane trips coming, they've really taken my mind off things. Hopefully driving back (a few hours) with some friends to see her tonight.

If that’s list of games you should play before you grow up, I must still be a child. Plenty of games I would play / need to play on that list as a 48-year-old “kid”. :)

Two things.

In case no one already posted it, UMvC3 digitally for Xbone is $15 at Gamestop.com

Second thing,

The spend $5+, get $5 back promo on Microsoft Movies & TV is set to end on the 15th, though these things always end early so it's closer to the evening of the 14th.

If anyone has never made a purchase (to rent or to own) of digital movies/TV (freebies don't count) from the Microsoft Store and is interested in getting $5 back on their $5 or more purchase (basically giving you a free rental), PM me and I'll refer you.

This does not work without a referral.

www.xbox.com has an image of both colors of the Xbox One X console.  I think that darker one will be mine.

EDIT - Odd that the darker one doesn't have an optical drive in the photo.  I'm sure this is an oversight.

Well to expand on watching and playing games with family on the Atari 2600 (Combat, Pac-Man, Yar's Revenge, Pitfall, um E.T...), my first system was the SNES. Super Mario World, Ken Griffey Jr Baseball, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart, and later on Super Mario RPG. Our family also had a 286 PC and played Sidewinder (reboot the PC with the floppy disc in to start the game lol), Rockford, Commander Keen & Dune II. Shit, good times and some of my all time favorite games.

When I go there I see the black Xbox One X and the white Xbox One S... also it looks like the black XoneX has an optical drive to me, slightly lower than where it sits on the One S

Earliest gaming memory- I got a NES for Christmas when I was 6. The NES box said "for ages 7 and up" and my parents teasing me that I couldn't play it yet since my birthday was two weeks away.
Got it set up, played some Duck Hunt and raged against that laughing dog.

I see it now. :)

In other news, apparently the team that makes Smite is coming out with a CCG/RTS mashup game called Hand of the Gods: Smite Tactics. Alpha signups are here --> http://www.handofthegods.com/xbox/

First early memory is from playing Risk on the original Mac in black and white. Then Duckhunt/Mario at a friend's house. Favorite early adult memory is Halo 2 and then later Halo 3 couch multiplayer for hours at a time with friends.

Speaking of which, would anyone like to run through Halo 5 Heroic Co-op with me? If so, hit me up here or online - GT is the same as my username here.
Old school Halo multiplayer was amazing. The wife and I had a group of friends that we would always meet on the weekend. Four TVs, four Xbox systems, and four copies of Halo or Halo 2.

My favorite memory of those nights was playing Capture the Flag on Coagulation in Halo 2. We were set up in two separate rooms: one for each team. We were tied at 1 capture apiece. It was pretty much a stalemate with everyone fighting in the middle of the field. I got tired of it, so I skirted around the perimeter and slipped in the back of their base, barely missed being noticed by a respawning player running out. I jumped up, grabbed the flag, and flew THEIR Banshee back to our base to score. I thought "What the heck?" and flew back, again in their Banshee, and ran in grabbed the flag for the final time. As I got back into their Banshee, I hear their team leader in the other room yell "IS HE IN OUR BANSHEE?!?!?! BLOW THAT MF'ER OUT OF THE SKY!!!!" They didn't, I scored, and won the match. That guy wouldn't talk to me for a couple of hours over that.

As much as I like online multiplayer, nothing tops stuff like that.

My first gaming memory was playing space harrier in a boardwalk arcade during a family vacation in the late 80's. That delux cabinet that you could sit on and it would pivot as you controlled the game. I was hooked. Sadly my parents knew how hooked I'd be with a home console so I rocked the game boy and game gear until my parents got me a PS1. So all my NES, SNES, and Genesis experience came from my friend who lived up the street from me. Nothing beat Friday night sleeping over at a friend's house and staying up all night to beat a game that we rented from the video store. The 90's were truly an awesome time to be a kid.

To the CAG who had car problems on his Forte(apologies i forgot who it was) where oil was spilling. Please update me I was interested in seeing how it played out if you were able to get it repaired via warranty and what was the cause of the oil spill.

My earliest gaming memory is playing the home version of pong, which wasn't that exciting in itself, but opened the door to some of the quarter-driven arcade classics like Pac-Man, DigDug, and that amazing Star Wars trench game in vector graphics.  It amazes me in retrospect, how expensive those games were - 25cents a play; in 1977 dollars that's about a buck today, and boy did those machines get fed.

My next major memory is running around the house singing the Atari 2600 theme song from the commercial 'have you played Atari today' as I mounted my three month campaign to see a 2600 under the Christmas tree.  I also posted drawings of the Atari everywhere but I guess my efforts paid off as I did that get that Atari and it saw a ton of use.  Been pretty much gaming ever since.

By the way, for all those gamers and movie fans of the 1980s, if you haven't read it yet, you absolutely must read 'Ready Player One'.  They're making a movie out of it, so I wanted to read the book first; just finished last night.  So many gaming, movie, roleplaying references from the 80s - if you're a fan at all, I highly recommend it. https://smile.amazon.com/Ready-Player-One-Ernest-Cline/dp/0307887448/

I've got to disagree on Yoshi, most of the games are meh but the first Yoshi's Island is one of the best platformers ever made.

I think Turtles in Time holds up pretty well too. I've never actually played the arcade version, only the first TMNT, but I break out the SNES version every year or so when a friend is over.

My earliest memory is blowing into the Super Mario Bros 3 cartridge to get the damn thing to work. Lol. I was like 3 or 4 and loved that game.

I wouldn't mind Microsoft adding a option to delete games off your list even if you already have achievements for that it. There's so many crappy games I played just for achievements that I would like to forget about. Lol.

Lol will do but after the movie. I have a rule, well more like a guideline that I will read the book after seeing the movie. Most likely am never satisfied with reality compared to the imagination in my head so this cuts down on the disappointment watching the movie. I can't wait though, I've heard great things and the trailer was absolutely filled with references - Capt America's movie lol.

I think the MS overlords are going to punish me this week by having a great sale because I spent my last $15 in ms credit on Transformers Rise of the Dark Spark the other night when I'd been drinking. Now I'll be broke all week and not have funds to buy anything.

The list needs to be more specific. For example, Street Fighter is a horrible game. Street Fighter 2 is an amazing game. If I wasn't familiar with the series and wanted to play through the list, I would've played the first game and not even have tried the sequels
As somebody that writes up lists of games every week, I should be that vague about what's on sale and see how it goes.

Being a Youtube video/list, that's all about sharing the list with others so they can bitch about it while giving them a lot of views along the way.

Just finished Little Nightmares. Totally into these Limbo/Inside/Little Nightmares types of games. Anyone try the DLC for Little Nightmares? Worth picking up?

Then by all means let them punish you! ;)

We’ll be happy to reap the rewards.

I must've played the 2600 at some cousins early on, but the first memory I can recall is my parents going out and buying a 2600. Last one at the store, as they were checking out, someone else came up asking for one and had to leave empty handed. It came with Pac-Man and Combat. Space Invaders, Asteroids, Defender and Entombed shortly followed.

Some EA stuff is counting down to date night tomorrow.

Mass Effect (regular / deluxe), FIFA 17, UFC 2, Family Bundle (PvZ:GW, Unravel, Need for Speed). Also the For Honor stuff on free play and a Digerati Indie Darling Bundle.

Earliest gaming memory is playing Pac-Man, river raid, q-bert, centipede and space Invaders on the Atari 5200. I got so frustrated with river raid, could never make it past the 2nd or 3rd level lol. NES/SNES/Game boy are where I really cut my teeth and developed my love for gaming. I love those systems and have too many great memories to list.

Two tanks with super bouncy bullets was my fav.

EDIT - OH SHIT I forgot about invisible tanks!

EDIT - Here's a sampling of all of them.

Combat was so much fun! I loved flying through the bottom of the screen and coming out of the top of the screen.

The DLC is basically a season pass with the first piece of content already available out of I think they said 3. I enjoyed the first one and if you like the main game and are looking to see more of it I would recommend it.

My big brothers A2600. Pac-man, Centipede & Pole Position in that order. Centipede is the only remaining thing I still have to this day.

We managed to hold onto mini arcade/electronic games from that Era too.

So I found what I thought was called Bomberman, before Bomberman became a thing, but it turned out to be Kaboom!

Lol, that was a fun game but def got more game time with Enduro! My fog driving skills are legit to this day yo.

Hard to say if we'll have any huge new announcements, Gamescom is all over the map for Microsoft.

Guaranteed:
-Scorpio pre-orders
-Crackdown 3, I would think story gameplay would make sense here, but probably multiplayer stuff.

-PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds information. I think the release date is likely, probably some gameplay showing if anything major is different. At the bare minimum I think the inventory system needs tweaked for consoles, like Conan Exiles is adding a radial menu.

Likely:
-Recore Definitive being detailed.
-Halo Wars 2 expansion shown off.

Possible:

-Shadow of the Tomb Raider finally announced. RotTR was announced at Gamescom 2014.

-Details on Xbox BC, or maybe just another couple games announced.
-Crash Bandicoot's Xbox release announced.

Hopefully nothing:
-New Shadow of War stuff, the announcement of lootboxes and a base raiding mode have soured a lot of people on the game. I'd guess MS isn't thrilled about that since they have the marketing deal with it.

My first gaming experience was X-man on atari 2600 and it scarred me for life.

I messaged over 20 people on my friend's list this weekend and a not a single person wanted to play For Honor, even the ones I met during the beta. I'm honestly shocked at the low rep this game has among most gamers. Ubisoft must have seriously fucked this game up. It's too bad, because I thought the beta was decent but after being constantly 1 v 2'd, I really don't wanna play unless I have a buddy.

I don't expect many surprises from gamescom, I would really like if they had some higher profile 360 BC games to announce, I'd even settle for halo BC being live, and the crash bandicoot xbox one announcement would be great.

I think Ubi has a bad record with online lately. Other than Siege somehow making it, I know the communities for both For Honor and The Division got fed up with various shit and mostly left. Division was a lot worse, but with For Honor all I ever here are how bad the P2P connection ruins the game, and I don't know that the upcoming dedicate servers can save the player count at this point.

Just really silly on their part to do a free to play weekend BEFORE the servers get fixed.

I enjoyed the game outside of the 3v1 gankings (how the hell do I defend against them?) and server issues.

Was a nice change of pace to play a multiplayer game that wasn't a shooter and/or rocket league. Was something fresh for once.

Well they said at E3 that they were showing the campaign part of the game and the multiplayer will be shown at Gamescom.

If they were able to hit that development milestone, that is another thing. I think everybody wants to see those buildings get destroyed!

They showed a bit of the Halo Wars 2's expansion, Awakening the Nightmare (ahem the Flood is back), at E3 letting people play with the Terminus Firefight multiplayer mode. It would be killer to get some cinematics there but I'm not holding my breath.

My first gaming experience was when I was 3 or 4 (in '93). I was spending the night at my Aunt's house and it was my first overnight sleepover without my Mom. I was distraught. I kept crying and my 1-2 year old sister took it worse that I was crying than that our mom was gone. My Aunt had just been married for 3 months and they were trying to decide if they wanted kids, but as the youngest and with no babysitting experience she had no idea what to do.

After attempting to quiet my sister and I for 5 hours or so, she noticed I kept half heartedly playing with my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figures and the lightbulb went on in her head. She ran out of the room and came back with an NES, TMNT 2, and Super Mario Bros. Once she showed me TMNT 2 she tells me that I completely stopped crying and played for the rest of the night. She said that when my Mom called me to say goodnight I wouldn't even talk to her because I was mesmerized. When my Mom came to pick me up the next day, my Aunt packed up the NES and games (turned out there were a ton more she didn't even bring out because I just played TMNT) and gave it all to us as a thank you for the experience.

I was blown away at the time, but even more so when I talked to my Aunt about it a couple of years ago. She described it like it was yesterday and told me that it was her husband's brother's NES and games and he was constantly asking for them back and she didn't like him so just constantly blew him off. I'm glad, too. My family was way too poor to buy games or a system. That console was my main source of entertainment until I got an N64 in late 1997. It started a lifelong obsession. She told me that she almost didn't let me have them and rented me a tape instead. I keep thinking about how if she did that, I probably wouldn't have discovered gaming until around the time of the PS2 when I was actively hanging out with people. My parents fought a lot and we went through a lot of hardships and that NES was one of the few things that kept my sister and I sane as kids (because we lived over an hour away from anything or anyone). Without that system my life would almost certainly be 100% different today.

TL;DR
My Aunt gave me an NES when I was a kid and it changed my life.

I didn't realize I was so young compared to the rest of the regulars. At 29 I'm on the higher end of age compared to the people I hang out with, but sounds like most of you are late 30s at least.

Until someone chimes in with their earliest memory being some early seventh gen game like Dead Rising or Twilight Princess I guess.
Damn, I’m only 24...

My earliest memory is playing Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt on the NES until that broke. Then basically nothing until I got my GameCube around age 10.

Not sure if it has been mentioned but was looking on the Xbox One dash and I see box next to the Summer Spotlight box on the store page saying:

Try 1, get 3 free. The picture looks like a zombie game or something. I clicked on it and it just goes to a black screen and it looks like it is loading but never does.

Anybody know what this is?

Was it Dead Alliance maybe? If that is the game then it is a FPS shooter that has zombies all over the place. I guess COD zombies just pvp. lol From what I hear it isn't that great. The controls are pretty bad and it isn't the prettiest of games. It is free though irrc. Or maybe it is a different game since that one only in Beta right now.

Any chance you can screen cap it? I can't see much since I'm running the new terrible dashboard lol.

Yeah, not sure what game it is from. Here is a photo I took of my Xbox screen:
