People already beat the story last night. I'm waiting to see if it becomes the norm like Destiny 1 where people just do raids and strikes over and over and over again for hundreds of hours. Everyone gushed over Destiny 1 and now Destiny 2 but I'm curious if this will be another flash in the pan deal where only the hardcore Destiny players rack up hundreds of hours again.

If you happen to get a free Redbox game rental code and a day or two off you can probably marathon the story and not buy the game.

 
D2 made shaders apply to almost every individual piece of gear meaning you can customize more, but it also made them single use consumables. So far I've only gotten enough pieces to outfit one set of armor fully with a single alternate piece. You can get them in the microtransaction boxes randomly. It seems you can earn these boxes from leveling once you hit 20, but I don't know if it's every level or not. Basically, if you care about having matching armor at any point, this system is absolute trash. I think it's an easy fix, by allowing us to buy shaders directly with Glimmer.

It doesn't technically affect anything, but this is just about the scummiest cosmetic system I've seen in a game and puts a damper on the game for some people for no real reason. I don't think it's a minority complaint either, the top FIVE posts on the Destiny Reddit last night were upset with this system.

Overall the game is good, better than D1 was at any point, at least so far. I haven't gotten to do a Nightfall yet, and the Raid isn't out. Most of the changes are for the better, though it doesn't seem like you can replay story missions at will, only select ones that are basically a bounty once you've finished the game. And I won't really be able to speak for the Power leveling for a week or two probably.

I think the story was about 10 hours, which is pretty standard for FPS, at least in the middle of "who gives a shit" like CoD and Battlefield, and games where it's the main focus like Doom and Wolfenstein. There are also a bunch of side quests on each planet that don't have to be completed during the story, and none of the strikes are integrated into the main story.

There does seem to be more to do at max level than D1. The activities in the Patrol zones are more numerous, and more engaging overall. With most of them being more involved like the mostly temporary stuff in D1, Wolf Packs or Taken bosses showing up. The fact that most activities don't take you to a menu after completion and allow you to have a seamless play session helps the game a LOT, along with the quality of life stuff like the in-game public event timers.

If you weren't the type of player that was going to put in time beyond seeing all the story content once though, it isn't going to change your mind. D1 definitely was getting a lot more shit pretty much at launch both from reviewers and players, so I don't see where you're getting the impression of a lot of gushing about it. The reviews reflected the low amount of content and mess of story, and people other than the hardcore fans that were doing the gushing turned on it within the first two weeks.

Personally I was kind of in the middle, I had a lot of fun with D1 because of the community I'm part off, but I also had a lot of problems with the game overall, and left for long periods of time during the 3 years it was active. It's hard to say if the exact same issues I had will be back, most of them were long-term things that won't be clear for a month or two at least.

Sounds like a Redbox rental for me then. I put in a ton of hours on D1 but only because I had one guy to do the weekly and dailys with. A few other guys that would do Stikes and Raids (which I only did 2 or 3 times). I finally quit cold turkey. We both got tired of the daily/weekly grind. I was annoyed with ever changing leveling up system. I really don't want to go down that road again and haven't even finished the DLC I own for the first one. I played the first DLC and own the taken king DLC. Maybe I will play that at some point.

It really is. They made huge improvements to address the flaws and complaints of D1, but ultimately it doesn't really feel like something completely new. This is the Destiny they wished they had released originally. You can even tell this from Bungie's own website. They've removed all traces of your player data from D1. You can't access your D1 characters, see your game history, see game stats,...nothing. Like it never existed.

That said, I've completed the story and D2 is a good game so far. For those of you wanting to try it or marathon it, there are 16 missions. On average, if you solo them, they take slightly less than a half hour each on average, so around 7 hours. (Keep in mind this is based on my gameplay; I ignore enemies that don't need to be killed and rush to the next checkpoint so if you stop and kill all the enemies, that will add significantly more time to the estimates. I don't skip any cutscenes which are fricking AMAZING, by the way.) There are a couple of missions that are level-gated such that you can't start them until you reach specific levels. You will need to do public events, strikes, and/or PvP matches to gain the XP. That should add anywhere from 3-6 hours. So around 10-14 total hours for the story campaign, perhaps up to 20 hours if you stop to smell the roses and kill all the enemies that I skip.

If you play with others, the time per mission should be way less as you will be taking down the final bosses way easier. I'd say 18-20 minutes per mission with a full fireteam (this assumes ignoring enemies and running to next checkpoint).

Hope that helps anyone who plans to just do the story and who doesn't care about the grind afterwards/raids/etc.

Call me weird and/or nerdy for noticing, but I think it's pretty cool that all of y'all used the same exact verbiage by using "Not necessarily" in the beginning of your responses.
 
Lol yeah I just started Destiny 1 the other day, played some more last night when my internet came back to me.

I used to play Guild Wars 2 a lot, do a lot of the dailies, do a lot of the community events so I can understand why people got into Destiny. That said I play it and feel like it's a poor man's Halo. Same AI companion, run through and do a set vignette and then head back, customize your character/see what weapons you need to dismantle and get another thing to do. I'm sure it's cool to play with friends, because co-op usually adds a bunch to a game, but ultimately I feel like I didn't miss out by not hopping onto the Destiny bandwagon when it came out (also at that time would have been very difficult/frustrating to do because I didn't have the unlimited plan for Verizon or a hotspot to piggyback off of for my Xbox).

Honestly, even the story clarity makes Destiny 2 a huge improvement over the original and encouraging me to continue to play. The gameplay in D1 was always good IMO. But figuring out what the hell was really going on and all the lure and stuff was a whole lot of yuk.
 
I got D2 with my Madden bundle last night, but it's going to get dropped on eBay sealed or traded to GS new, but unwrapped. I really have no interest in it.
 
Hyped for LA Noire. Will get it next year when it's $20 or less.

Just hit 300k gamerscore today. I'll play a few multiplayer games the next few days, so I don't get anymore points. It's a nice round number I can look at

Finished Insane Campaign like two months ago solo, and have to say there were a few parts that were quite...frustrating. Also Vehicle parts in the Gears Games were always my least favorite =P lol. Haven't touched the Co-Op Campaign yet, but would love to play with someone through Hardcore Ironman.... As for Inconceivable...I guess I could make it thoruh that solo...since enemies in the campaign have reduced health too. (Unlike Horde where Drones can suck up 4 Gnasher Shots at point blank lol...)

I wish you the best man. I'm in orlando and they just said on the news that by the time it gets up here the wind speeds will be about half what they were in Miami.

People are freaking out here. My wife watched two guys fight over a jug of water at Walmart yesterday. Granted, that happens every other day at Walmart, but still...

Anyways, I hope to hear back from you and the rest of the Floridians after the weekend. Now I gotta play some more Injustice 2 before the power goes out.

Shoulda just packed it in for the night and stuck to watching Venus kick ass in the semis
 
It's high time for the greatest undefeated competitor in sports to rear its head, assert its dominance and keep its streak alive.  It had a challenge about a decade and a half ago, but an assist from common sense kept the streak intact.

I think my Xbox One power supply went to shit. It's orange constantly and my Xbox won't turn on. Tried power cycling, different outlet etc. to no avail.

Has anyone had this happen and if so, did you go with the official Xbox power supply as a replacement or a third party one? $20 to $30 for third party seems much more palatable.

Yeah I'm hoping for the best for my Miami/Keys fam, luckily I'm inland in Jacksonville so we're most likely just gonna get some heavy winds and rain. The worst part of the hurricane usually affects the coastline/beaches area.

 
I'm in Orlando, and the latest track has that darn thing coming right over our house. Highways already are jammed, so we're staying put for this one. Stay safe, my fellow Florida CAGs!

Evacuating is risky, gas is scarce and the highways are packed. Plus I have elderly parents and 3 dogs to take care of. I can't leave em. We are hunkering down with family.

Any deals on a year of XBL going on? Of course my XBL expired today, the day I'm about to start Destiny 2 and I hadn't realized. Would rather not drop $60 as I have to re-up on a year of PS+ as well :/

~$42 on on Gamesdeal. Maybe a little more on cdkeys. In the trading forum here it's going between $40-45. (depending on how you buy it)(amazon gc, paypal, xbl gift card etc.)

 
Same things are happening here in West Palm Beachhad with preparations. It's getting harder to find water (most I found was Voss water for $2) and gas stations had lines down the block. Supplies and shutters are ready, nevertheless.

With Andrew, Katrina, and Wilma, I remember power being out for two weeks. Of course that was when I lived in Broward.  Who knows what Irma will do here?  Fortunately there is a fire station a few miles away so power might be restored faster if it does happen to go out.

 
I have no problems with the new dashboard, but the new in game guide button sucks, its way less convenient to adjust headset volume and look at achievements for the game running.
