Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Ick on the GwG.  Though the puzzles in Turing might be interesting.

Thank goodness for Destiny 2 and Fortnite BR.

Pretty weak month, but free games are free games, and the two XB1 games are a stupid easy 2000G total, so that's cool. Don't care for Rayman, but I'll be definitely trying to complete Airborne.

Not just a terrible GWG month but still disappointing.  I bought Turing Test during a sale not too long ago.  It is pretty good, need to finish it at some point.

I've been meaning to get The Turing Test for awhile now so excited for that. Gone Home is in my top ten favorite games of all time so glad to see that get a wider audience.

I own none of those four games so I'll call it a win. I "played" Dear Esther yesterday and got 700/1000 since I was not able to trigger like three of the voice over points. Will get the last two remaining achievements on Saturday morning.

My wife has been into walking sims lately. She had her eye on Dear Esther and Gone Home (since just after they were on sale last time). I told her they would be on sale again in no time, and here we are - $3 Dear Esther and Gone Home for free. That's better luck than I ever have! I don't see much else for me, but i'm still playing GwGOTY Slime Rancher.

Haven't played any of those GwG, so I guess that's a good thing.

I also had a problem with the Taco Bell code not responding.  I just thought to myself I guess someone entered the code a millisecond ahead of me and won lol.

Played like 7 rounds of the Battle Royale and got close to winning by being in the final 3.  My controller rechargeable AA batteries died so I had to run upstairs and find the spares then run back down.  That made me lose focus and I tried to snipe someone but he got me first.  I need to get a new controller and new play & charge kit, I think the messed up tip on the cable messed up the hole on my controllers so it doesn't properly charge or at all.

GWG keeps intersecting with EA Access.

Semi wanted to add the Turing Test before.

"Baby steps, Bob. Baby steps."

I guess I'll try Gone Home for free. I generally am not interested in walking simulators. Turing Test isn't one though, it has more puzzle elements and is closer to Portal, with a more serious story. Wasn't sure what the reason for "Console Edition" on Gone Home was. There are a couple actual things like porting from Unity 4 to 5, and enhanced visuals, but this part sounds like a joke, it's not like this is some twitch shooter. "Additionally, the Console Edition has been given enhanced controls especially for controller use, as the original PC version was created for keyboard, and not as well playable with a gamepad"

I don't think I could deal with tethering my consoles through a phone as the only connection, I'd try to get an internet company to run some cables to my house, or deal with playing offline and going somewhere else to get updates. What you've been doing sounds like the type of temporary measure that would be relied on while waiting for internet to be hooked up at your house. I know it's shitty that Unlimited doesn't mean what it should, but if you probably should ever have thought that was a permanent solution with how phone companies always are.

Those of you who don't get the popularity of PUBG and don't like that Fortnite copied it for their new mode should look at it this way. This early F2P mode, that will own the market on consoles since PUBG is still months away, is going to draw in a ton of new players, some of which will like the game enough to buy the founder packs and jump over into the PVE mode. While I still think Battle Royale specifically was decided upon only after PUBG was gaining steam, some form of PVP was guaranteed eventually. This is Epic Games, who built up their popularity on Unreal Tournament and Gears of War. Having played it now, I think the evidence that this mode was a late edition is clear. While the mode itself is fully functional, there is currently nothing that you can pay for in the F2P portion of the game. This was put out quickly to build up a playerbase before PUBG actually releases.

Well, fuck. Bought Turing Test in the somewhat recent past and haven't played it. I've always wanted to play Gone Home though and I don't own the other 360 games, so not a bad month for me.

I Only own two of those games on GWG. I'll shrug and say good month or good enough because in all reality I won't play majority of these games anyways! Backlog!

Remember when the rhythm genre was new a hot and then completely died out?

The sooner walking sims go that route the better.
Can't wait for running sims.

I Still don't know what a walking sim is. Is Journey a walking sim? Because Journey sucked and that game was alot of walking.

"Yo. I Put 20 hours into this walking sim and finally upgraded to speed-walking! HELL YEAH!"

"Too much dialog! I Wanna get back to walking!"

"Hey what's Jimmy playing? A walking sim? The fuck is a walking sim? Don't nearly all games have walking?"

"Isn't Condemned Criminal Origins a walking sim because that motherfucker sure as hell ain't running in that game."

These are the thoughts that go through my head when I hear the words "walking sim."

that's a real weak month for me but luckily I only own airborn on the xbox systems

have rayman on ps3 but getting it on another system is better than nothing

not owning 3/4 on xbox systems in general is a miracle in itself

I Still don't know what a walking sim is. Is Journey a walking sim? Because Journey sucked and that game was alot of walking.
Nah I'd say Journey actually has more gameplay than what most people consider walking sims. I mean I guess you can find out soon enough with Gone Home but basically it just boils down to being plopped into an environment and then you explore said environment to take in the atmosphere/story. What separates it from an adventure game (which people often confuse with walking sims) is that there are pretty much no obstacles and you can't die. I mean we're talking less gameplay than the stuff Telltale does nowadays, those games at least have dialogue choices and QTEs you can fail.

As for Gone Home itself I played it back when it first came to PC and was engrossed immediately because the setup is interesting. I was really enjoying it as well until it became incredibly obvious what was going on in the story which was super boring. Pretty much soured me on the game entirely because it's the definition of a fake out.

Remember when the rhythm genre was new a hot and then completely died out?

The sooner walking sims go that route the better.
I get not liking a genre, but it's weird to me to want to see genres disappear just because you don't like them. I don't care for 8-bit retro platformers, but I don't have some strange desire for them to disappear completely so no one that does like them can play them. There are plenty of other types of games to play.

I actually just find it weird cause this type of game never really took off anyway, especially on console. Outside of scraping the bottom of the barrel on steam I can think of very few actual walking sims in the vein of Gone Home.

There’s plenty of successful walking sims. Oxenfree, in particular, is not scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

Played through Gone Home some years ago...

And made this big pile (Note you can only grab one item at a time)

started small

Second month in a row a game ends up GWG that I bought recently.  At least I am already playing The Turing Test unlike Oxenfree.  Either way I spent $15 needlessly on those two games.  Gone Home is fine enough since I never played it when the PS4 got it for free.

Dam I just saw Sony is giving MGSV for Oct.  Well played.

Nah this is exactly the point I was making. I don't really like arguing over what a genre is or what game fits into a genre but even Oxenfree has more gameplay than Gone Home and games similar to it. I mean Oxenfree has a sense of exploration in a large (by comparison) world and you are constantly making dialogue choices. Gone Home is literally you inside a house with no characters to interact with, no puzzles, no dialogue choices, no state of death, etc.

It's basically like someone made a FPS and then removed everything from it except the ability to walk and pick up audio logs.

Ruiner is really good but really hard. It is so much easier playing it with shitty graphics on my laptop with mouse and keyboard than on the xb1. The controls on the console version make me feel like I'm fighting the game itself more than I am the A.I. You can tell the game was made for pc then ported to console. It requires a lot of precision and quick timing that just isn't possible on the console version imho. It's really sad due to how interesting the world and story is. I wan't to be able to see it in its graphical glory but due to how hard playing with the controller is, I'll probably beat it on my pc first. It's easily worth $20 as a whole, but I'd recommend playing it on pc and not console at the moment.

GwG this month is fine for me. I'm so far behind in my backlog, I wouldn't play them anytime soon.

I did use to own Airborne, I didn't like it due to the bad checkpoint system. Otherwise it was an ok game. I think I made it to the last level and never finished it.

Any regulars who have the Hoonigan and/or VIP Forza 7 dlc and dont want it please inbox me. Im just getting the vanilla version
If nobody has taken you up on this find my post from last night where I'm giving a VIP code away to whoever quotes it. Decent chance since I think only 12 have done it so far.

I just read the SNES Mini is basically an NES Mini just different casing. This news really simmered down my impulses to get it lol. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-snes-mini-teardown-confirmed-recycled-nes-mini-tech

I tried that nesbox thing on the Xbox One but couldn’t get it to work. Gonna retry later on and look up tutorials again. Anyway Cuphead is coming soon & it’ll feed my nostalgia cravings mixed with fresh ideas , hopefully it delivers.
Truly, the only things that the NES Classic or the SNES Mini grant you are a neat looking case and legal access to those games. If you don't care about how pretty the case is, or if you want the option to make a case out of LEGOS, use a Raspberry Pi. The second point is a sticky situation though, and I don't recommend using ROMs unless you own the game.

I picked this up on PS4 (gasp!) and the controls are pretty complex but at the same time I’m not sure I’d want to play any dual-stick shooter without actual sticks on a controller. Yes, the way dashing and abilities are implemented are not intuitive but I think I’ll get used to it.

Also not a keyboard and mouse kind of guy which is why I play on consoles to begin with.

I will admit that I ended up switching to Easy because that first boss was a bitch when you’re still getting used to the controls.

It’s not the greatest looking game but love cyberpunk environments and it’s been a while since there’s been a good game with it. I’m really liking it so far.

Probably will complete the game on Easy the first time then go back and play normal. Don’t see me ever doing the difficult levels above that. :)

Since this is the internet and text, I'm not following on what you mean here. Either you love seeing the high score or you're mocking it along with the necessity of having a sequel.

As for how Pinball FX3, high scores are paramount for arcade & pinball games, handles it they've separated FX3 & Classic modes for tables, and leaderboards, so everyone would be happy. New upgrades, wizard powers, challenges, match ups & tournaments feels like enough new stuff to quantify a sequel to me. There are also 3 Universal tables, BttF, Jaws & E.T. - likely with a whole ton more tables heading to FX3.

Just played the Fallout table in FX3 last night and god damn it looks really good (and I don't even have a Xbox One S with HDR). Start a vault quest and the night scenes with yellow lighting looks really good. The ball reflects the green radiation so beautifully and you can really see they upped their engine.

The game, and let's not forget Zen Studios, let's you import all of your previous Pinball FX2 games in for free. Not a fee, not a via a paid pinball subscription but for free.
Yup, awesome.

There is hope for a Japanese replacement GwG next month. I don't see Gone Home on the Japanese Microsoft/Xbox site. Then again, it could just be Max: The Curse of Brotherhood for the bazillionth time. Something to keeo an eye on.

Same on the Korean site.

Played Gone Home when it was free on the PS4, will gladly play again for some easy cheesemints. Almost pulled the trigger on Turing Test when it was $6 back in June. Happy my cheap ass didn't get it then. Rayman is great and MOH Airborne I recall playing a tad and then moving on to something better. Overall, great month of GWG freebies imo

These fake GwG images keep getting more and more outlandish.
In all honesty, blinkknot's fake lineup with the sandwich game and Three Men and a Baby looks better than this. It's a bit sad that that's the real McCoy.

Forza Rewards has updated for FM7 and applied the rewards for older games' tokens and DLCs.  They applied them to everything, not just ones you've played.  I've never played FM3 or FM4 but got the points for those as well as the tokens for FM5.

I scored a VIP membership for Forza 7 in the daily sweepstakes, but I have the Ultimate Edition coming Friday which already includes it. For anyone that's interested (and will actually use it and not try to sell or trade it like a dick), quote this post along with who your favorite active musical artist is.

I will randomly pull a winner from everyone that responds by 11:00 PM EST tomorrow (Wednesday) night.
Ok. I'll go with Ice Cube
