My wife and I have been married for over 10 years. We have separate bank accounts (a joint savings). We split the bills evenly and save evenly for vacations, etc. As long each of us has money for our share of the bills we don't care what the other one is spending their money on.

Hard for me to justify to my wife when I am personally not sold I need or even want it now at $500. I didn't want a XBox One OG for $499.99. I also don't want the XBox one X for $499.99. I don't have a 4K screen. Just upgraded my video game TV to a 39" 1080p set 3 months ago.

15 years ago when I was single and rented a modest apartment and didn't own a house? I probably would have a 4K set and XBox One X on preorder and a PS4 Pro.

Really depends on where you are in life. If dropping $500 on a console isn't a big deal to the budget/expenses and you want it I don't see the big deal. Or if you have $500 in credit at Game Stop or somewhere.

If you are married with kids, mortgage, car payments, college tuition to repay etc. you have to weigh all that.

Add to that there aren't many new games with XBox One X support. Sure lots of games I already played are getting patched but other then FM7 I don't see a console seller. Just like when the PS4 and XBox One originally came out. It was 1.5 to 2 years before there were enough games IMO. I had a PS4 at launch but could see why many people waited.

And congrats to those who are getting them at/near launch.

We started doing after 9 years of marriage and it has worked out for the best

Woah woah woah.

VIdeo games teach social skills, if you know someone is playing a MMO or you're playing as a team in an online match.

Video games teach you spacial awareness, improves cognitive abilities and enhances memory recall.

Video games teach players strong motivational skills, objective and goal driven attitudes.

Video games teach players how to think on their feet, build up tactics and strategy on how to overcome the game's obstacle (A.I., level design or player).

Etc, etc.

Basically you're enjoying an active form of entertainment, compared to passive forms from TV, movies or reading and you get a lot out of playing video games.

 
For BC talk, I think all of the Star Wars games, including the bad ones, have a decent chance at becoming BC, if EA has any power over this AND they start selling digital copies of them. LucasArts must have owned all rights to everything, so Disney should now. At the very least Pandemic, that was bought and killed by EA, made the original Battlefront games.

Out of these games I'll definitely be hopping back into KotOR first, and I'll probably try to track down Bloodrayne II since I liked the original way back when, and never really played the sequel.

So far we have these companies represented outside of Microsoft, they seem to pretty much line up with those who've supported 360 BC:

I 1000/1000ed it years ago. To do this you have to do everything in game except completely fill out the monster codex (whatever it's called). With the codex this means you don't have to have all the info discovered but at least defeat (maybe just see) all enemy types in the game once. I believe I was somewhere between 40 and 50 hours. If I'm remembering correctly finding the cores means you have to go back to some previous areas and takes a decent amount of time.

Overall I'd say the game is shorter than the original, though I never finished XIII. There isn't really anything overwhelming time consuming to do, and if you just want to see all the story content you can probably shave like 5 hours off.

Personally I couldn't date someone long term that wasn't at least neutral on gaming, it's just too much of my life overall.

If your GF or BF can't at least understand that it's a hobby that you enjoy and let you have it, either it will cause friction eventually, or they will try to make you drop it and it's up to you if either is worth it I guess.

I think your only real chance is to try and get her to have some appreciation through some co-op, or by showing some of the top-tier story focused stuff and hope she sees the light, but it's a long shot. Those have been the only things I've seen make any ground with people that don't "get" video games, but it's still pretty rare.

Gaming is a waste of time. IMO if your not learning something or raising kids or working hard then you're wasting time. Movies are a waste, trash tv is a waste, a lot of things we do are a waste of time. I'm okay with wasting time and so is my wife, as long as all the important stuff is done. As an adult I just have certain things I have to do before I can do the time waste things. Reading this is wasting time too :)

Disney/LucasArts is the one that released the old Star Wars games on PS3/PS4, so that would be the company response for anything that happens on the BC front.

 
Aspyr actually ported KOTOR (as well as Jade Empire) on iOS. Not sure what their relationship is with EA or Disney. They seem to be independent of them but must have been granted rights from Bioware under EA.
 
On a different note, while organizing my games today, I found an unopened copy of Victor Vran overkill edition. So far, it’s pretty great! I think this will get me through until Black Friday.

I don't think they have any direct relations with either company, just contracts. Looking at their Wikipedia page, it seems like they specialize in porting and has done it with many different franchises/publishers.

My wife of 14 years puts up with my gaming because she knows how much her friends' husband's spend on golf, which could also be considered useless. Between the constant need for newer/better golf clubs and green fees, it can get expensive quickly. Even spending money on a new console like X1X doesn't look bad in comparison.

I have KotOR on Amazon Fire TV (2016 version). The UI scaling is fantastic - its in widescreen, running at what appears to be 720p/60fps. The controller is identical to that of the Xbox 360. Its the KotOR I mis-remember playing on the original Xbox - because of course it looks considerably better in a side-by-side comparison. Amazing experience.

I can't for the life of me figure out why we haven't seen this version come to devices beyond iOS and Android. Does Microsoft hold the console rights and are insisting on that the title not come to Sony/Nintendo - leading to hardball with Disney? Does Disney not want to see non-canon sold on consoles? (That doesn't make any sense, either.) Someone, somewhere has an answer.

All I know is it doesn't make any damn sense that some cheap quasi-console from Amazon is still going to be the best way to play my favorite role-playing game of all time whereas my new $500 6-TFlops Xbox One X is going to be stuck with a 4x3 boxed image with the UI taking up half the screen. ...I mean, I'm happy we're getting KotOR on Xbox - I really am - but this nonsense needs to get sorted out.

^^ I hear you. I also understand that Jade Empire also looks better for the mobile versions. Controls aren’t so hot but if you play it on something like Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV or Shield TV, you’ve basically got a console version with a real controller.

It would be nice if those versions were ported to Xbox One and even PS4. Aspyr deserves credit for the visual upgrade.
 
Neogaf had a huge shitstorm tonight apparently. Claims of the founder sexually assaulting someone, ALL of the mods resigning, posts about this were being instantly deleted, and now the site is down. Probably going to be all over the gaming sites tomorrow. It's ridiculous how all-encompassing these awful people are, but it's good people are finally coming forward. I don't think it will do a lot very quickly in Hollywood, but smaller places like this with people who aren't millionaires will hopefully clean up a lot of the garbage.

 
I'm playing Metal Gear Rising and though the cutscenes are non-sense the gameplay is awesome and has free DLC, BC continues to be my favorite part of xbox

I would play Dark Souls 1 if it didn’t have achievements. I put 200 hours into that game AFTER 100%-ing it.

I’ve been enjoying the hell out of my SNES mini. Kicking my son’s ass in Mario Kart after he said he could beat me was all the achievement I needed.

A few things tend to happen when you pass the age of 40 ... and no harm in feeling this way, so long as you still act morally, responsibly and with respect and consideration for others


1. You realize that you've gotten too old and have too much responsibility to worry about "asking permission" to do small, relatively inconsequential things

2. You stop caring about who disagrees with you, who doesn't like you, who may be butthurt, etc. because of something you said or did

3. You realize you've probably lived more days on this Earth than you have left (then reflect again on points #1 and #2 above)

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was on GC so you may have played it, but that game was excellent. Combat was decent and the environmental puzzles really made you think for navigating 3D spaces, IMHO was a big inspiration for some of Uncharted's level designs. Shame the HD ports last gen of the 3 games were PS3 exclusive.

Knights of the Old Republic is a must, unless you just hate Star Wars. As happy as I'll be to see KOTOR go BC, I'd rather have the updated port on X1 and pay $15 or $20 for it, but if I can put my old OG disc in my X1 and play it, that's pretty cool too.

Platformer fans never shut up about Psychonauts. I never got around to it but I may finally give it a shot, especially if the OG version were to be BC.

People also love Ninja Gaiden. While I enjoy difficult games, NGB is a game I never got the hang of and was way too fucking hard.

As a gamer and a golfer, this is true. Granted, I’ve played the same irons for 20 years, over replaced my driver, woods, wedges and putter at the rate of one club per year since I got back into the game 5 years ago.
 
if one of the systems gave me the first two battlefronts I would be all set

have the discs but I'd rather get drafted to fight a Trump caused war than get up to change a disc

Yeah, I remember PoP. KotOR I’ll play for sure! I didn’t even notice it in the pic. I’ll pick up Psychonauts if it’s cheap enough and I’ll probably pass on NG. I had one of them on 360. Maybe it’ll go bc.

I use the “deflect and obfuscate” method.

I never tell her how much GS credit I have. That way, when I get something, there’s never any cash out of my account. She wouldn’t have any idea of something is new, anyway. I set it up, it sits for a few months before she recognizes it and I say “seriously? I got that a while back and told you all about it” and she says “oh, yeah. Now I remember that.” Problem taken care of.

I always keep an extra, empty guitar case in the house. That way, when I find a great guitar for a price I can’t refuse, the empty case gets filled and a new empty case shows up.

I’m the saver in the family, though, so the other side of that is that I have to pretend that there’s no money at all in savings, because she would want to spend every last penny if she could. So, every time we have to pull any money out of savings, I complain and make it very uncomfortable to pull money out. Unbeknownst to her, there’s always thousands of dollars in savings...

I used to love hunting and fishing games in the 90s when it was slim pickings 

not sure who plays those now as whenever I research their gameplay they look like they've barely changed or improved

farcry 3 is my hunting game anyway but it would be cool if someone made a really fun open world hunting game that didn't feel like some sort of duck dynasty style cash grab

Might Pick up Mummy or Little Nightmares once the price is right..... Probably never going to pick up assassins creed unless I get it for free.... Just not a huge fan of the series unfortunately :whistle2:/

So shameful admission here, I didn’t like Wolfenstein. Even worse, I actually liked the remake from several years ago much better, as the supernatural storyline and powers made the game more interesting imo. In the latest game I just didn’t like that I was always running out of ammo, the level design was weird to me, the damage feedback was too minimal, difficulty was uneven, and lots of other little issues.

Going to try old blood this week, but should I be looking at Wolfenstein 2 at all or just ignore it? Any chance these smaller issues have been addressed?

I'm actually the opposite.

I loved the New World characters, drama, gunplay, and beautiful cutscenes...but hated the sci-fi angle.

I wanted those characters and that dark world with me facing the task of killing Nazis. ...Just let me kill Nazis without the over-the-top battle stations, robo attack dogs, or any other tech that looks like its from 2500 AD. ...Love the protagonist.

 
I hated the original Wolfenstein from the PC (give me Doom any day) but liked the PS3/360 version. If the next gen games are like that, sign me up.

Shadow of War ... Assassin's Creed. I'm not interested in those series so the XB1 starter is still the bundle I prefer.  Maybe the Battlefield One bundle but right now I'm 1-2 with that series.

Looks like Date Night will be a disappointment but with WWE TLC and The Walking Dead returning, tonight should be great.

I would agree with Donken that 'raising kids', and also the implied but not stated commitment to your wife, are "important" but only if you've previously committed to them. Once you get married, or have children, you are on the hook for that.

The only reason I say this is that I know there are a lot of younger lurkers out there, and if you haven't already, you should give serious thought to whether these social norms are things you want to buy into or not. Having children is no longer a biological imperative - indeed, there are plenty of children to go around on this planet already. By far, the biggest environmental issue that swamps all others, is overpopulation. And that's just the tip of the parenthood iceberg. Still, I understand kids can be a source of joy and many people want a family of their own, and that's cool too. Just understand that it's a choice, not a natural result of aging or becoming an 'adult'.

Personally, I cringe at the posts where people have committed to relationships where they don't have the financial freedom to engage in the things that interest them. I could not live like that. Similarly, the frequently mentioned spousal nagging is another thing that I want no part of. Life is short enough as it is - ensure your choices mesh with your personality and goals; (in the context of society as a whole of course,) that's about the most responsible thing you can do as an adult.
