Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.

I know a lot of you hate any mention of Gamestop (it does make my heart hurt a little), there's a B2G1 on X1 games, and a ton of really good BC games for less than $5. Lots of used prices discounted alongside, saw Quantum Break for $15 base:

https://www.gamestop.com/browse/games/xbox-one?nav=28xp0,13ffff2418-1e0-17e-6
Are you sure it applies to BC games? There was some other promotion involving X1 games a while back where they wouldn’t let me do 360 games that were BC. Said it only applied to actual X1 games.

Transferring games from my 1 TB to my shiny new 4 TB from the pre-Black Friday deal at Best Buy.

Thanks again to kcobra22 for messaging me on XBL last night.

the tv optical is for output only
As you can see, my knowledge of optical audio is nonexistent. :p

Right. So if he uses the hdmi xbox ->tv he won't loose hdr. The optical goes tv -> receiver. Then all tv audio comes from home theater receiver / speakers. Low cost solution that preserves hdr for video and sound from home theater.

The one thing I'm not sure about is whether or not the tv -> receiver connection will preserve hi end audio such as dolby surround surround or will it only transmit 2.0 stereo audio. If so I might try setting the optical cable to go xbox -> receiver and see if any advanced audio features return.

Just to clarify, you'll want to connect the xbox via optical to the reciever and via hdmi to the tv. I guess you could connect the tv to the receiver if you have limited reciever ports, or if you weren't already using hdmi for the audio.

Make sure if you run the optical out of the xbox, you change it in the settings so it doesn't just send audio via hdmi to the tv (which would be fine if you then run the tv out to the receiver).

My old receiver doesn't have hdmi, so I run optical audio from the xbox to it. I don't have cable, so I didn't have any use for running audio out from the tv.

For me, I lose something in the audio. I have all my HDMI devices going into my TV, and then my optical audio out of the TV into the HTIB receiver (which is old enough to not have HDMI), and it says it's receiving 2.0 sound. If I ran the optical straight from the Xbox to the HTIB, it would display something else (I forget exactly what it said, it's been a while since I configured everything, and I haven't touched the setup much in the past few years.

So for me, even though I know I'd be getting better audio quality if I went straight from the console to the receiver, I stick with using the TV as a switchboard/passthrough, because I want all 3 devices I have hooked up to play from the receiver.
I'll be trying the optical cable with the X and receiver first. Hopefully that will work. Best Buy didn't have any cheap ones so I have to wait for Amazon to deliver it Friday.

So bonus points, opening up Edge and activating the specific topic of the day, for Microsoft Rewards (Bing) done now as I haven't seen it in the Earn page in a few days now.

I’d be curious to know how much improvement people with 1080p TVs see. Honestly know I wouldn’t have upgraded to an X if I didn’t have a 4K TV. And, of course, on that the difference in enhanced games is astounding. Well worth the price of admission for me.

Still it’d be interesting to know if people think it is worth it for non-4K TV owners.
Halo 3 looks a hell of a lot better on it than it did before even at 1080p

I think you're right awp its xb1 games only. Which is what I thought gamegirlpocket meant based on the phrase

there's a B2G1 on X1 games
on a side note Rise of the Tomb Raider looks fantastic in 4k with HDR. will be trying Battlefront II later. might try Mafia III later tonight too.

I wasn't super impressed by Mafia 3 on the X. It ran a lot smoother than on my OG X1, but there were still some graphical ticks that I hate about the game. Like when you look at a shiny car's roof and the shading/lighting on it randomly bugs out. I really wish they would make Mafia 2 backwards compat, that game would probably look a lot nicer.

Speaking of old ass games, I wonder how LA Noire looks/feels on the X.. will have to try that out sometime when it's on sale.

Like when you look at a shiny car's roof and the shading/lighting on it randomly bugs out. I really wish they would make Mafia 2 backwards compat, that game would probably look a lot nicer.

I'd like to see L.A. Noire in 4k and HDR when it comes out. But I'm in no rush an may wait for the price to drop some.

Mafia II going BC would be nice.

Z-Saber or any of you guys that have an X and are playing Titanfall 2, can you go to it on the My Games dashboard screen and do the start+select+left bumper+right bumper thing and let me know if you are seeing an "Applied: Xbox Scorpio" indication?

Just trying to figure out if the menu itself is bugged or if I'm really not downloading X assets.

Here's some photos with an example of what I'm talking about. My Halo 5 has that "Applied: Xbox Scorpio" indication on it, but Titanfall 2 (and Killer Instinct) do not, despite all three games being flagged as "X1XE: True."

What are you doing outside the XB Live thread? Get back in your cage!

Edit - just realized I'm IN the Live thread. D'oh! Talk about a long day.
They let me out for 10 minutes every day so they can power wash the back corner of the cage where I do my business. They learned their lesson when I wouldn't stop flinging it as passersby. During that time, I did venture into the XBL freebies thread and post the skin availability there.

Doesn’t matter. Titanfall 2 is fucked up based on a Digital Foundry piece on it. Major dips in resolution at times compared to the PS4 Pro. Hoping Respawn fixes it soon.

As you can see, my knowledge of optical audio is nonexistent. :p

I'll be trying the optical cable with the X and receiver first. Hopefully that will work. Best Buy didn't have any cheap ones so I have to wait for Amazon to deliver it Friday.
rtings.com does a good job charting out different specifications for 2016 and newer TVs. I have a 2016 Sony 55x850d, but am holding off on upgrading my AVR. The TV is able to Passthrough 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS through optical, so I've set the X to just bitstream one of those for audio output and it passes those formats just fine through optical.

Don't think I've seen it mentioned here, but people should check out the Dolby Access app if they use headphones. It has a 14d trial ($15 purchase), and it processes Dolby Atmos to work in any set of headphones that are plugged into the controller. It didn't work well on my launch X1, with audio frequently clipping, but it's worked perfectly with the X.

That's not what I'm asking. I need to figure out if my console is downloading/applying the X enhancements or not.

Nah. It says Durango

Game deals aren't stupid dirt cheap or amazing to me this year for Black Friday. Then again I just added more games than necessary to my SNES Classic and bought two games today so maybe a blessing.

Look for X1XE: True.

Thanks for the info. I came across that during setup and wasn't sure. I'll have to check it out.

Are you sure it applies to BC games? There was some other promotion involving X1 games a while back where they wouldn’t let me do 360 games that were BC. Said it only applied to actual X1 games.
Crap, you're probably right. The search results turn up the BC games and they're listed for the platform so I just assumed they were part of it.

any recommendations on the BC games?
Whether or not they're part of the promo, $5 or less is still pretty great for some of these. Looks like Gamestop got over themselves with their BC tax for some of these, and they're back down to being dirt cheap. The ones I can vouch for or have considered myself for the price based on impressions:

Rage is only $3, people seem to remember it fondly. It was on sale for that much on XBL recently though. So is Bioshock Infinite, if you don't care about the much pricier X1 port.

Dark Void is on Gamepass and is probably $3 of entertainment, I mostly had fun with it during my Gamepass trial.

Pure is $3 too and probably worth it if you like those kinds of games.

TImeshift, X-Com, Stunt-Man, Oblivion, Halo Wars, Shadows of the Damned are all $5. SotD is awesome, but has also been that price on XBL. TImeshift is supposed to be a forgettable sci-fi shooter with some good ideas.

Mass Effect 1-3 are all between $3-5, too.

Quick question everyone...

So I know For Honor is pretty universally hated, however I have always had an interest in trying it. Is it worth the current $24 price on XBL?
I would only be playing it for the single player. If it is worth the price of admission, should i get the season pass edition for $40 instead? Do the character packs in that add new single player content??

Thanks for your time and help with this. Love you CAG.

Yeah, I know. And I tried to argue with the people in-store about it but, hey, it’s GameStop so reason doesn’t apply.

I enjoyed FH, but it’s worth noting the single player is really just to familiarize you with the different characters for online play. If you don’t plan on playing online at all I’d hold off until it’s $10-15. Season pass is definitely not worth it if you don’t plan to play online

Wonderful info, thamk you very much. Seems smarter to wait with that information.

Fuzion Frenzy appears to be $5 right now
I have a stockpile of MS credit and went to buy it through Xbone Store, apparently you can only use credit card for Original Xbox games.

Is there no way to redeem it using MS credit through the website or otherwise? you could use the 360 system to purchase 360 BW Compatible games for Xbone with MS credit since they wouldnt let you use credit through the Xbone. Are we screwed using MS credits with the Original Xbox BWC games?

I was just able to buy Fuzion Frenzy through my 360 for 5$ with Microsoft Points since the Xbone only takes credit card for backwards compatible games, and now its downloading to my Xbone. Retarded

Welp, the Battlefront 2 campaign is pretty underwhelming so far. Not that I expected much.
I was 50/50 on picking this up for a quick play through and trade. I trade a game to BB yesterday and got the $10 off BF2 coupon. Was debating putting in a pre-order this weekend. Might just wait till it ends up on EA access and renew then. Or maybe a rental.

I bought original games with credit on the 360

which is how they do things unfortunately with 360 and OG

I could see them in store not doing it, but the website lists them under the platform, which IMHO is false advertising. Not like they give a shit.

And if (and that’s a big if) I’m going to step foot into a GameStop, I always use the website to check if something is in stock at a store. So to me that categorization would also apply to the stores.

But this is one of the many reasons I don’t shop at GameStop unless I absolutely need too.

Although the game rental program they’re planning to launch is tempting...

It's currently free to play, so you gots until Monday to play the full game.

I bought a month of EA Access to play the Sims 4 trial and ended up eating all 10 hours. It's graphically a little underwhelming (but not terrible) and seems to have the same bs that EA did with the Sims 3 (no hot tub and other items in the base game). Also, the game did start to have some performance issues towards the end of my trial. It never straight up froze, but using the fast forward option started to cause massive frame skipping.

The biggest and most recurring problem was the interface. It's more pc-ish this time with less controller shortcut menus and while it works, it's reaaaaaally clunky. The Xbox One analog stick simply does not work as well as a mouse and this is evident in the first part of the game when creating a sim. It's hard for me to explain, it's like the cursor changes speed when you're focusing on a specific body part.

It gets worse when playing the game. Again, using the analog stick is just not as fast and fluid as a mouse and even after 10 hours of play, it's always some form of frustration with dealing with UI. At the very least, they could have had the option for a console interface similar to the Sims 3 Pets on Xbox 360.

But all of that pales to the number 1 issue I had with this game. Selecting items/people can be a little clunky and trying to navigate through your various actions is straight up annoying. Selecting responses often feels like the cursor gets 'stuck' and maybe it's just me, but it felt like it was often hard to tell which response was even highlighted.

I tried playing around with the (sparse) options available, but no dice, it was just something I had to deal with. I know this was mostly negative, but I was a huge fan of this series on both PC and console since the original game. The only games I never played was the PC sims 4 and the MySims console games. I still had a lot of fun with Sims 4 and can barely wait 2 weeks for it to hit it's sale price on Black Friday so I can neglect my real family to spend time with my digital one.

I had a lot of the same issues. I feel like a lot of it is just my inexperience with the franchise. I didn't have trouble during character creation, but my home building skills make the Winchester house look like your average two-car garage setup.

Thinking about an X for Christmas I only have a 1080P TV and I know it does super sampling to make it look better on the 1080P TV so I would still see some benefit until I got a 4k TV a little later. My question though, to see those improvements on a 1080P TV do you still have to download the larger 4k patches?
